Wait what’s Ash/Eiji and Hojo/Tokai like and how does it fit into RGG ships?
Without getting into spoiler territory for either:
Ash and Eiji are the quintessential "Sun and Moon" pairing we see all the time in RGG, but it's all about tragedy and catharsis. The inseparable bond that is separable, but isn't, but is. Being able to work through trauma but also being so traumatized you cannot and will not help yourself, which dooms any possibility of a stable relationship.
But within that, moments of vulnerability, of living the lives you could've had from the beginning if you'd met in another life. And hanging on to the belief you will meet in another life. I don't think there's anything quite like it in RGG (mostly because, well, it is a BL), which is why I say it's more "the appeal" of many RGG pairings in terms of what the fandom likes to explore the most.
Tokai and Hojo on the other hand... it's one of those "bromances," you know, that many wouldn't really take as being that deep, but it's exactly what the previous ask describes: a weirdo/really cool nerd with their obsessor who’s dying to suck their face off. Literally.

It combines a multitude of things: Tokai is at once the mentor, the antagonist, the invaluable ally, the devoted subordinate, the thorn in one's side, the comic relief, the Depraved Bisexual. Any and every character in RGG whose key characteristics are chaos, devotion, hypercombativity, and/or hypersexuality is more than likely based on him, and said characters make up one half of a huge chunk of RGG pairings. I haven't finished Sanctuary yet, so I don't know how things end up, but it's pretty self-evident where the influences lie.
