I have no memory of ever editing this, but I do remember realizing YT would have murdered my account on the spot if I uploaded it, so here’s to hope blue site is okay with it ‘cause I do kind of like it.
This is from 2013, when I was switching from too many effects to RAW editing; there are no effects in this except for stitching clips together.

ALRIGHT, IT'S TIME!
THE SECOND RYUKI-AND-BLADE-ACCOMPANYING ANIME POLL IS NOW HERE!!!
SO, MEET YOUR CHALLENGERS!
AJIN Demi-Human
youtube
We start with a dark horror and possibly scifi about ethics in science, immortality, and an outlaw fugitive alien plot as a boy finds himself part of a group of immortals declared legally inhuman. While I have some misgivings about Oh No I Was Secretly A Creature All Along plots, I do fucking love horror and there’s a lot of ways for those plots to hit hard in the trans and gay and autism organs and be really important!!!!
Dimension W
youtube
The New Tesla Energy Corporation has monopolized the fourth dimension and the coils that connect to it. A duo of bounty hunters, one human and one robot, make money via repossessing illegal coils and seek out the answer to the mysteries within the dimension. I really wanna watch this one for a few reasons, the primary one of which is 'there are multiple fat women'. It seems to have freaks and weirdos and fun times, and its comedy is emphasized more than most of the other ones on this list so it might give some needed levity!
Kyoukai no Kanata
youtube
A bumbling monster hunter with blood powers meets an immortal via trying to shank him and ends up in an arrangement where she'll keep trying to kill him to boost her confidence while hunting monsters in what I hope is a monster-of-a-week show that came highly recommended by a friend as her favorite anime, or one of her favorites, so i have high hopes! Script's by the hibike euphonium guy and the power system seems quite interesting!
Air
youtube
A puppeteer (if he’s as good as Sakon will remain to be seen) stops his Road Trip To Meet A Golden Sun Jupiter Summon to stay for a bit in a town and, as happens to anyone who stops for too long, gets attached to the place and also meets a girl who might be said jupiteresque being. My friend informs me that it's gorgeous, sounds amazing (so I'll make sure to get clips), and has "nice sad vibes"!!! And it’s…listed in a “provincial horror” listing… hoho
Heike Monogatari
youtube
A child who can see ghosts and the future walks tirelessly through the tragedy of the war between the Taira and Minamoto families before the dawn of the first shogunate. It's wildly beloved by a friend of mine, and also centers a historical event i know some but not all about and definitely need to know more about the Taira side of. Seems like a beautiful drama, one I could lose my heart over.
SSSS Gridman
youtube
Digital kaiju! Digital hero! Digital amnesia! A monster of the week show about an unknown amnesiac summoning and merging with Hyper Agent Gridman to fight digital, possibly virtual monsters while making friends(?) in the real world! It's the one thing Tsubaraya Productions has that isn't Ultraman, and I expect some tokusatsu vibes from it along with the mecha stuff, i've also heard it has gay girl megatron??
Akudama Drive
youtube
It's a prison break and crime story set in a tech dystopia, starring a scene girl shoplifter, and featuring a bevvy of unpersoned convicts in what seems like an excellent ensemble clusterfuck!!! The Danganronpa crew made this thing! It's also beloved by a friend of mine, and I've heard it'll be a generally excellent tragedy of a time
Canaan
youtube
A reporter gets saved from assassins by a woman she might do yuri with, and the summaries I’ve found seem to imply a plot about terrorism and mystery! It’s a Type-Moon work that isn't part of the fate, tsukihime, OR melty universes! It might still have magecraft, but it's tagged sci-fi too, and a type moon take on scifi sounds interesting... it’s also based on. *checks wikipedia* a…perfect-Famitsu-score visual novel for the Nintendo Wii. So I might need to dig out some old hardware to watch this thing. For fun’s sake!
Killing Bites
youtube
A guy unintentionally becomes the underground wrestling promoter of a ?werewolf? Woman who murders his friends and wins him a shitload of money. The end goal? According to the summary, control of the economy!!! This was recommended as garbage and good lord I need garbage so much good god I need to put some trash inside of me.

Thinking back on it, I'm realizing there aren't many straightforward idol anime I actually like. Like, Zombieland Saga is lots of fun, but the idol stuff is consistently the weakest part of it and I always feel myself tuning out whenever that's the focus. I guess I liked Heroines Run the Show before it went to shit in the back half? Does Ya Boi Kongming count? Symphogear, technically? Maybe Hanayamata? I dunno, I feel like all those shows have asterisks that keep them from being straightforward idol-y enough to qualify. Meanwhile, by far the most traditional idol show I've watched so far has been Shine Post, and hoooooooo boy did I end up hating that one.
I think the problem is, as I grow increasingly cynical and jaded in my old, withered age of 25 years old, the overwhelming positivity that defines the idol genre starts to feel forced and cloying. It's easy enough for "believe in yourself and try your best" to work as an overall theme if you're sincere enough to pull it off. But the second that theme becomes an obligation or an afterthought, it can very quickly turn a show into the most suffocating, shrink-wrapped piece of sanitized goop imaginable. It becomes a way for a story to avoid being about anything, spouting generic platitudes and cynically designed cuteness with all its edges sanded down and dull. When I look at the weaker idol anime I've watched, I don't see stories that come by their earnestness, well, earnestly. I see coldly calculated, market-tested corporate branding exercises that say nothing, express nothing, and don't dare step a single toe out of line. A plastic smile plastered across an empty styrofoam mannequin, babying its audience with lazy, simplified moralizing because it doesn't think they're capable of anything more complex than Teletubbies, and god forbid we lose a single audience member trying to actually make an artistic statement.
But that's the thing about Juuki Hanada as a writer.
Tumblr media
When this man wants to get messy?
He gets fucking messy.
So much of what makes Hanada's writing so powerful, in comedy and drama alike, is how well he's able to let the reins go of his characters and let them crash into each other. Snappy one-liners and comebacks battling for dominance, chaotic personalities setting off fireworks of all kinds through their interactions, but also raw, ugly emotional confrontations that don't sugarcoat anything out of fear his audience isn't mature enough to handle it. Not all of his stuff is a masterpiece- I could spend hours talking about how badly Kyoukai no Kanata's plot falls apart in the second half, Steins;Gate gets more and more exhausting the more I think about it- but even his weakest works carry the unmistakable passion of a writer holding nothing back. And when he's firing on all cylinders? You might just end up with the single greatest coming-of-age tale this medium has ever produced.
And it turns out, that sensibility is exactly what a show like Love Live needs to succeed. Because even the most optimistic, inspirational story imaginable needs that edge to temper itself against. The sheer chaos of its lovable cast bouncing off each other isn't just what makes the comedy work so well, it's what lets these dramatic moments sting the way they need to. Because it's only in recognizing these harsher moments- failure, frustration, despair- that its triumphs are able to be so meaningful. I care about Muse because I've seen what it looks like when they fall short, and I care about Honoka because this show lets me see her at her lowest, at her most human and vulnerable. These characters aren't just plastic simulations of cute girls selling a fantasy; they feel like a real friend group, messy and anarchic and free. Free to express themselves with the full palette of the human experience, even the parts most of us would rather pretend didn't exist. And it makes their successes matter in a way they wouldn't if we didn't have that grounding in the unbearable chaos of being.
Love Live is not a deconstruction, or a subversion, or a dark parody or anything so gauche. It's nothing more of less than a straightforward, inspirational idol show. But it's a straightforward, inspirational idol show that knows it doesn't have to sacrifice its raw humanity to shine with the brightest stars in the sky. And that, folks, makes all the difference in the world.

Well, after a rewatch that made me realise I fucking hate the original series, today I watched Kyoukai no Kanata's sequel movie - a movie I remember quite fondly for its improved character writing and storytelling over the show, and even 6 years later still remember particular scenes with a genuine fondness. But I hated the show this time, so what was gonna happen with the movie? Well the answer is...
Tumblr media
I liked it! This score hasn't actually changed from what I gave it 6 years ago, despite the original dropping so far, but yeah no, positive feelings by and large.
Tumblr media
Picking just one screenshot from the movie for this post feels hard honestly - it's got a lot of really striking visuals. But this one is a vibe.
But anyway yeah this movie is just like, pretty good, really. The most notable improvement is in the dialogue - it's not constantly begging the audience for laughs from trashy light novel jokes and instead lets itself breathe and even marinate in the darker tone that actually makes up most of the series' appeal.
Honestly that fact alone basically saves the writing completely, but it doesn't just stop there, and instead actually goes the distance with trying to write its characters as characters and giving them meaningful personality and motives and feelings and desires and reactions to the world around them.
Akihito was already pretty good and they basically just make him better here with a conflict about what he should be doing regarding Mirai. Mirai is given amnesia and it actually works in service of her character and doesn't feel like it erases her growth up to this point nor is it used to just recap her initial arc. Mitsuki is still the weakest link, mostly just wanting to be nonspecifically stronger, but she really is better when she's not written how she is in the show. And Hiroomi has the biggest glow-up of all - his new position as head of the Nase family immediately dials up parts of his character that were underexplored initially and offers new depth by way of him fighting the pressure to live up to his older sister. Shit's just good - fix the dialogue and the main cast and suddenly Kyoukai no Kanata is just a solid time.
I'd also say the movie is helped by being way more about something than the rest of the show. Right at the beginning it establishes the value of memories and connections and how they offer happiness to people, and right up to the end those themes are what the movie is exploring. It's not next-level writing or anything and the original show offered a lot of the same themes, but I just think they're given a more central focus here that lets the movie feel like more of a complete thing.
Granted it's not all improvements - Miroku is still such a non-character of a villain even with his attempted backstory at play here - and I actually think it could've beneffited from being longer, because as it stands Akihito saves Mirai and then the entire plot just kinda stops, movie's over now. But between solid character writing, a clearly defined and explored set of themes, lots of very cool action setpieces, and most of all making me give a shit, I think this movie deserves that 7/10. And I'm glad it did. Because I didn't want this rewatch to turn into an "I hate everything about Kyoukai no Kanata" thing. The movie surviving my wrath and even turning around my opinion on all the characters is something I'm genuinely grateful for. Nice time. I can call this rewatch worth it for this movie alone. Swag.

Hai,
It's not an issue I wasn't sure if Tumblr ate the message or not lol!
I wasn't sure about what all anime style/genre you like,
So I just asked if you have seen Kyoukai no Kanata (beyond the boundary) cause it's one of my favorite "go back to watch" animes!
I also asked if you watched Promare back when everyone was hyped about it in theaters, or if it even came to the UK in theaters? It wasn't in a theater near me so I just waited for it to come out online to watch, I saw a random Promare post the other day and it reminded me that I wanted to ask you!!!
Ooooh!! I actually like all sorts! There isn’t a particular genre or style, although I suppose there are certain ones I can’t get into because of the art style?
I’ve never seen Beyond the Boundary! But I’ll look it up/check it out. If it’s one of your go back tos, it must be good!!
And Promere I watched online on one of those dodgy websites, I love the colours and general vibe of it but I wouldn’t really say it’s one of my faves or anything!💕

The other day I suddenly remembered Kyoukai no Kanata and I realized that I had forgotten what the plot was beyond "girl with magic blood and cute ship" so I decided to rewatch it because why not.
And now that I finish it, while I did enjoyed it, it also felt like watching a magic trick in which you already know how the trick works. The script has a lot of plot points that literally never get solved (what was the deal with Akihito being you-know-what?), and other storylines that felt rushed and needed more development. Also guys, this show is just really unfunny to me. It's always the same jokes over and over again, and they didn't even do it for me the first time. I didn't hate them but I'd gladly exchange all the comedic moments for more serious ones, because I personally think this series did drama way better (and I say this as a person that does enjoy comedic feel good moments!).
These flaws were always there, but I didn't noticed them (or cared for them) the first time I watched it when I was fifteen. The animation is stunning (as expected from KyoAni), the characters are likeable, the romance is super cute, and the final arc is so angsty that makes you forget about anything else. I could only see the magic back then. But now I see the trick. It doesn't make me like less the thing I enjoyed about the series, but it does make me think "huh. I remembered this a bit differently".

15 questions, 15 mutuals
Tagged by @leatafandom, thanks hun!
1. Are you named after anyone?
Not specifically. My mum heard the name on TV and liked it, and she wanted the Irish spelling because my nan’s family is Irish
2. When was the last time you cried?
Oof, honestly can’t remember. Maybe last month? Not sure what on though
3. Do you have any kids?
Only my fictional characters
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
No, never (yes, all the time)
5. What's the first thing you notice about people?
Depends on person to person. Usually how comfortable they are around me, or sometimes tiny little quirks they might have when they’re talking
6. Eye colour?
Blue-grey-green
7.Scary movies or happy endings?
I guess happy endings? Don’t really watch a lot of scary films tbf
8. Any special talents?
Does knowing pretty much all the lyrics to all of Westlife’s songs count? Or that I can flip-flop between TV shows while still knowing exactly what’s doing on? If not, no. I am a boring-ass person
9. Where were you born?
In a hospital several days early
10. What are your hobbies?
I say writing but I haven’t done writing in like a month (even tho I do creative writing at uni... eek), but I also read a lot (of fanfic) and I play hockey (when I can actually get to training), but I also over-analyse a lot of shit (some I’ve posted here, which I’ll need to get back to) and I watch a decent amount of shows
11. Have you any pets?
No, my brother’s allergic to fur and we go away too much for any other kind of animal. I do want a tabby cat and a dalmatian when I get my own place, though
12. What sports do you/have you play(ed)?
Hockey is the only current one I play, but I did play netball in secondary school as well
13. How tall are you?
5′2″ or 157.5 cm. I am a smol human being
14. Favourite subject in school?
History has and always will be, but I did also love Media once I could take it at GCSE
15. Dream job?
The big one is being an author, but realistically, anything in the writing profession. I do have being a teacher on standby, but I’m hesitant to persue it as it isn’t my first choice job and I think kids should have teachers who want to be teachers, not because all else failed
I tag @bwoahtastic, @kyoukai-kanata, @jxmieswxnter, @hecticwinter, @jules-and-company, @grilledcolgate, @minnnnnimin, @justyouwaitsunshine (I know it’s not 15 but I didn’t want to do 15)

Hey hi how are ya!
Tumblr media
Welcome to the mess that is my blog! There’s no sideblogs here, no, that’s for weaklings. This is a multifandom blog with some personal art sprinkled in whenever I get possessed to actually draw something. It’s kinda rare, but I blame my university studies for that.
Some fandoms you may find here:
Genshin Impact (the current hyperfixation)
Bungou Stray Dogs (the second hyperfixation)
Dungeon Meshi
Final Fantasy
Okami
Yuzuru Hanyu
Shingeki no Kyojin

other anime and games from around 2013-2018 when I had my biggest anime phase (including Donten ni Warau, Tokyo Ghoul, Kuroko no Basket, Inuyasha, Noragami, Kyoukai no Kanata etc.)
I'm trying to catch up with newer anime (send me suggestions plz lmao)
I also run a queue, so most things will be posted at random.
Tags'n'stuff:
You can find my art at #emirreadraws (do not repost or edit my art without permission!)
Tag for my personal posts is #posting
My gaming stuff is tagged either #em plays games or #em plays genshin
And if I start a new series and want to yell abt it while I’m watching it, the posts will be tagged with #em devours media. I may spam a bit if I really get into it sooooo... I apologize beforehand. It doesn't happen too often tho.

Anime recs! :o I have a few. Though it's been awhile since I last watched em but I can remember the general stories of each.
Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue [My roommate is a cat] (I adore this one especially, cats! And a pretty nice story.)
Miira no Kaikata (This one has a cute lil chibi mummy)
Mikakunin de Shinkoukei (This one, I don't remember much bout it as well but I remember it being a romcom slice of life.)
Bofuri (This one is fairly popular :D)
Naka no Hito Genome (This one is like… a survival game situation of sorts? It's mystery genre. I can't remember much bout this one but I know I quite liked it :o)
Runway de Waratte (Not sure if you'll like this one but I'm still reccing it! It's an anime about a guy that wants to be a fashion designer and a short girl that wants to be a model. It's a pretty sad story cuz of how the two struggles a lot... The title, Smile down the runway, is a lie it's a drama genre oomph.)
Kyoukai no Kanata (I love this one! One of my faves. It pulled me in with lighthearted scenes and comedy only to smack me in the face with action and sadness.)
My taste is all over the place, though I mostly watch slice of life cuz of how lighthearted it is (though sometimes it'll betray me with sadness anyway...) I have a couple more but here are ones I'd love to recc :D
ooh I've heard of a couple of these already I think! thank you for the recommendations!!
and my taste is all over the place too lol, like I love both haibane renmei (sad but also bittersweet) and nichijou (very silly)

Kyoukai no Kanata (2013)
Tumblr media
Kyoukai no Kanata
Aired: October 2013 to December 2013 Watched: No record
Producers: Lantis, Pony Canyon, TBS Studio: Kyoto Animation
Number of episodes: 12 Synopsis:
Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors with the power to employ their blood as weapons. As such, Mirai is tasked with hunting down and killing "youmu"—creatures said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form. In a panicked state, she plunges her blood saber into him only to realize that he's an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito, in an effort to boost her own wavering confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Eventually, Akihito also manages to convince her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase.
As the group's bond strengthens, however, so does the tenacity of the youmu around them. Their misadventures will soon turn into a fight for survival as the inevitable release of the most powerful youmu, Beyond the Boundary, approaches.

You know what, this was the first good episode of the show. Only took until episode 10 of 12, but we hit one. It's not without its problems, not the least of which being it's full of reveals that recontextualise the entire narrative up to this point but the foreshadowing is so bad that this is functionally just a random heelturn in the narrative just for the sake of it. But it works. It fixes some (but not all) holes in the narrative, it goes to good lengths to meaningfully contextualise Mirai's character up to this point, and it sells the growing mutual trust she has with Akihito. Also ups the stakes pretty meaningfully for the final arc to come, and there's even a bit of foreshadowing so subtle that I only know it's foreshadowing because I've already seen the show before, all alluding to Mirai's upcoming amnesia. Nice job, Kyoukai no Kanata. You were able to be a mostly coherent and emotionally sound story for a single episode right at the end. Took you long enough.
But of course, there are strings attached. Not just that it's badly foreshadowed and still leaves questions unanswered - I can ignore those. No, you see, Kyoukai no Kanata continues to insist on its own... embarrassment with itself? Its own sense of shame? For context, Mirai asks Akihito why he's so nice to her. Birthed from her life of self-hatred and insecurity running up against a person that wants to be there for her anyway. And Akihito answers. He says that it's because she's kinda similar to him. It's a good answer. It's true, it's in-sync with the narrative being told, it's well built up to, and it's honest and straightforward but significant. I like this scene. Until Mirai then takes the opportunity to cringe. Yes you see in this moment of serious emotional vulnerability and honesty between our lead characters we decide to cut away from that for a second to make a gehhhhh reaction face and joke about how Mitsuki calls Akihito a masochist and now Mirai gets to be disgusted with him.
I hate this fucking scene. I detest it, even. Even the one moment of actually good character writing has to be ruined for lowest common denominator "comedy" about our pervert main character and witty banter side girl. It can't fucking help itself. Kyoukai no Kanata was about to be actually good for once and it recoiled in fear that the audience might actually care. I just can't fathom being so embarrassed about the story that you're trying to tell that you take jabs at yourself with the hopes of getting a laugh from an audience that wants to be invested but just can't because you refuse to let them. It's genuinely depressing to watch. I would say with full earnestness that this is one of the most pathetic works of fiction I've ever engaged with.
