The problem is they both make sense.
John lacks any agency, and as his abilities start "failing" he loses more of what little he has. The only things he can do is perceive the world through Arthur's eyes and talk to him in his head. That's it. He has no material effect on the world around them. He is solely 100% reliant on Arthur for his continued existence and influence on the world. He can't ignore Arthur whatsoever (unlike Arthur who can ignore John easy peasy) he can't Do anything but talk and observe (and also experience the deaths of people Arthur touches but ultimately that does nothing). Of course he is going to be distrustful of other people and possessive over Arthur.
Arthur feels like suddenly he can't rely on this very reliable thing that has been keeping him alive this whole time. It would shake anyone up. Especially with the shit they have to deal with? If he can't rely on directions he will be sliced to ribbons or shot without a chance of fighting back. They may as well be dead already. And for all of John's lack of agency, it's Arthur who has to actually deal with the consequences. He's the one who's getting wounded and torn to bits and has to fight all that. Plus it's HIS body. If someone's existence relies on your body, you have the right to refuse, bodily autonomy is a human right.
The problem is they've gone through this cycle before (cycle of learning and forgetting and learning that they are One Unit and need to work Together vs The Problems and forgetting) but never has it shaken Arthur so much. Even when they've argued before he would still listen to John's directions. But now? Everything is in question (as is probably the intent behind John's "failing" abilities.) They DO need other people to help and they DO need to be careful and include John. They cannot truly trust someone else while keeping John a secret or without his input. Arthur has the most control over the situation and the onus is on him to make the compromises. Yeah it's his body but 1) countless times he promised to John that they were in this together and 2) at this point separating them would be so traumatic that they may as well be One.
All of this is to say, curious that Arthur is so willing to tell Oscar about literally everything EXCEPT John. What happens if he does? What if there's someone else to assert for John in a way Arthur can't ignore so easily? Would that legitimize the shared ownership of Arthur's body? What does it mean for John to gain agency by the loss of Arthur's autonomy?

Betty! Drawn while watching Fionna and Cake- but now its finished...
(spoilers and opinions on the finale below)
I think we could have done with like 2 more episodes. I like the ending but i feel like it would have been more impactful spread over a few more episodes- and if Simon wasnr spoonfed the answer...
Also! I dont really like how much blame is placed on him, like yeah he could have absolutely chosen better choices, but he didnt. But neither did Betty. He didnt force her to stay, she coule absolutely have gone on that bus, they could have worked long distance or they could have waited until she was back. SHE wanted to stay as much as he wanted her to.
So Simon could have been abit more observant, ans Betty could have been abit more selfish. They BOTH could have done with better communicaion.
Anyway, i think that could have gotten more fleshed out in a few more episodes, and made a better reason for Simon to regain a will to live (to put it bluntly, cus if i was told by my so, who i spent so long trying to reach, that they sacrificed everything for me and i never noticed, dont waste this shit, id feel worse than before). Like have him make connections about the last few worlds, you have new people who love you and need you, new friends and those previous worlds prove your impact on the world, live for them!
Anyway, tangented alot into Simon from a Betty post- but that make sense- Rant over lol

Hey, so all of your adventure time posts have got me looking at the show again, and being as ive only ever caught a couple episodes, i want to watch the whole thing.
Anyway, i know theres all those sequel series like distant lands and other things, but i recall the series ending after that. So i wanted to ask if there was a guide to watch it? Is it just release order? Thank you!
release order totally works, yeah! most of the mini series (Stakes, Islands, Elements) happen in the middle of the season theyre attached to, so its more useful to just think of them as arcs and watch them in release order. and distant lands came out after the series ended! so after the series proper ends you can move onto distant lands and then fionna and cake, again release order totally works.
the ONE acceptation i think is Distand Lands episode 3: "Together Again." i think its the best episode to end the series as a whole with (it was meant to be the final but production complications made it come out 3rd instead of 4th). i think it gives the most closure while still keeping lots of stuff open, and also chronologically just takes place after everything. obviously i watched it before fionna and cake, since that wasnt out yet, so it doesnt REALLY matter but... thats my personal suggestion. ofc fionna and cake also hasnt ended yet so if this changes ill let you know lol
so basically my suggestion is
Adventure Time with Finn and Jake: Full series!
For clarity, this means Season 1-7 (season 7 contains the "Stakes" miniseries, from episodes 6-13), season 8 (contains the "Islands" miniseries, from episodes 20-28), season 9 (contains the "Elements miniseries, from episodes 2-9) and season 10. Watch them all by release order, don't let the "miniseries" title confuse you too much, they are like arcs.
Adventure Time: Distant Lands: episode 1 ("BMO"), 2 ("Obsidian"), and 4 ("Wizard City")
Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake: Full series!
Then go back to Distant Lands for episode 4, "Together Again"

I share a lot of your complaints with the finale and I'm sorry to hear that you were so disillusioned by it to the point of not enjoying the at series anymore. I personally still do but it really does suck that the last two episodes didn't live up to what the show was building up towards by that point, I'm especially disappointed we didn't get that "emotional performance" that Tom Kenny mentioned (though he apparently never actually said that from what I've heard, which is even worse cause whoever did that shouldn't be putting words in his mouth)
thank you yeah :( i mean, i do still enjoy at . in theory. i care deeply abt the characters but there was this huge jump from absolutely adoring it and watching it (esp fionna and cake when it was coming out) all the time, to feeling so thoroughly disappointed that i just didn't feel like watching it anymore. ill probably be able too eventually lol. also that is interesting i was also confused abt that quote from tom kenny it would make sense if it wasn't real bc there's no WAY that was his most emotional performance . no offense to him amazing actor the writing just didn't even give him the room to do that bc it was so Bland and Empty. also dissillusioned is the perfect word for this ty for making me remember that word lmao
