2022–23 Japan Figure Skating Championships Women's SP Favorite Dresses (in my opinion).
Since I was searching for inspiration for a fic, I ended watching some figure skating competitions and writing this ranking.
1. Rika Kihira → The Fire Within by Jennifer Thomas: the combination between red and dark blue looked amazing. The gloves give elegance to the outfit, and the dress paired with the thighs look perfect. This is my favorite costume because it matches beautifully the program. it’s made me think in red petals flying on the wind.
Tumblr media
2. Ikura Kushida → Red Violin by Ikuko Kawai (based on Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo): that’s how a red dress should look like, vibrant, alive, and powerful.
Tumblr media
3. Miyabi Oba → Send in The Clowns (from Musical “A Little Night Music”) by Stephen Sondheim: while I usually don’t like white dresses, I liked this one because of the yellow parts, they bring a nice touch to a simple dress.
Tumblr media
4. Marin Honda → Assassin’s Tango by John Powell: this is probably one of the most beautiful black dresses that I have watched in figure skating, it has personality, sexiness, exuberance, and sharpness. It’s suited the program very well.
Tumblr media
5. Rino Matsuike → Papa Can You Hear Me? by Barbra Streisand: pastel colors are not my thing, however this dress looked soft, and sweet like a caress. the combination of soft pink and purple fading into white bring a sense of relaxation and calm.
Tumblr media
6. Ami Nakai → I Got Rhythm by George Gershwin: the neon barbie pink dress looked funny and playfull, perfect for a junior skater. I think this dress matches the skater style really well, the first thing I notice about Ami is how happy she looked during her program and her dress shows this with its color and style.
Tumblr media
7. Hina Takeno → Music from “SAYURI”: Becoming a Geisha, Going to School by John Williams: not my favorite but looked nice.
Tumblr media
8. Rion Sumiyoshi → White Flowers Take Their Bath by Meredi: I liked the blue and white combination, not the style of the dress.
Tumblr media
9. Yo Takagi → Sous le ciel de Paris, Milord by Édith Piaf: I liked the indigo color mostly. I think it has presence.

Ami Nakai - Japanese Nationals 22
Program: Miss Saigon
Elements:
3A3T (!!!! Looked rotated!!!) | 3F | 3A (!!! But q? Honestly really close) | FSS4 | 2A | ChSq | 3Feu3S | 3Lo | 3Lz | LS4 | StSq4
What!!! A!!! STAR!!!!! Wow wow wow WOW! Those triple axels! That beautiful, joyful Smile!!!! That nearly clean program! Her Straight Level 4s!!!! With a speed, performance quality and confidence of someone far beyond her age. I cannot believe she is 14 with how mature and unquestionably she skated. This was such a joy to watch and I cannot WAIT to see just how far this little lady goes.
Score: 137.42 for a total of 201.49 into 1st!!!!

Ranking the GPF programs - the junior women FS edition
6 - Chaeyeon Kim - Poeta, choreo by Yeaji Shin
Again, much love to Chaeyeon, and the choreo for her free is better than for her short. That said the costume is 100% worst. Just way too much going on and questionable decisions made.
Choreo sequence is fire tho
5 - Hana Yoshida - The Planets/Star Wars, choreo by Tom Dickson
Mostly Satoko’s old program, also choreographed by Dickson, and repurposed for Hana. It works, and that program was very good, so why not. But imho besides the music, it fails to make an impression.
Mostly I think it comes down to Hana struggling with nerves throughout the season, and not being able to perform. She ends up being a bit lost in the music.
4 - Ami Nakai - Miss Saïgon, choreo by Kenji Miyamoto
Love the music. Love the costume, that dress was stunning. Love the choreo, especially the choreo sequence. Love how on the beat the jumps are.
Ami’s Free Skate at Japanese Nationals was the skate of the night.
But I can’t get behind the fact that she’s a kid skating to Miss fucking Saigon.
I don’t know why child-hookers programs are so popular among the FS community but nope.
3 - Jia Shin - Tree of Life Suite, choreo by Yeaji Shin
At the beginning of the season I was feeling lukewarm toward that program, mostly because of the music choice. Tree of Life Suite was used by Richaud for Kaori Sakamoto’s iconic Piano program. Everytime I watched Jia skate, my mind went to Kaori instead.
But Jia successfully mastered it and made that FS her own. That glorious Ina Bauer at JGPF was a moment and imho she should have been closer to Mao
2 - Mao Shimada - Passepieds/Wild Swans Suite, choreo by Lori Nichol
Mao didn’t have to go that hard choreo wise for her first junior season but here we are. Let’s just say she set the bar very high. That is a stunning program, senior worthy.
The music is playful and at times a tiny bit elegiac, Mao looks every inch the Swan princess she’s supposed to be (the arms, the posture), and her musicality is priceless.
And the choreo sequence is hands down one of the best we’ve seen, all fields together, in a long time.
1 - Minsol Kwon - Cats, choreo by Yeaji Shin
Is it the best junior program ever ? Pretty much. A pure delight, and a triumph.
