There is no way I can talk about Black Fashion/American Designer without discussing Stephen Burrows. If you ever see a woman walking down the street with the ultimate color block dress please take note that the look was inspired by Stephen Burrows. Born May 15, 1943 in Newark, New Jersey. Under the guidance of his grandmother Stephen began making clothes. In 1960 he graduated from Arts High School and from 1961 – 1962; would attend the Philadelphia Museum College of Art. Burrows would later attend Fashion Institute of Technology graduating in 1968. Upon graduation he was hired as a designer at Weber Originals and in 1968 he co-founded the O Boutique in New York City. The following year Burrows would launch his ready-to- wear line which were sold in stores such as Bonwit Teller and in 1969 the President of Henri Bendel’s; Geraldine Schultz hired and gave Stephen Burrows his own boutique called Stephen Burrows World. His line could be seen on celebrities Barbara Streisand, Diana Ross and Cher. He would later leave Henri Bendel’s and start his own company Burrows Inc. in 1973 Stephen Burrows was one of five American Designers to show his collection in Versailles, France. He would receive rave reviews and would be the first African American designer to gain international fame. Mr. Stephen Burrows has received many accolades; a star on The Fashion Walk of Fame, The AndréLeon Talley Life Time Achievement Award and the Pratt Institute Fashion Lifetime Achievement Award. #stepehnburrows #blackdesigners #americanfashion #colorblocking #blackhistorymonth #blackhistorymonthfacts #timeless https://www.instagram.com/p/BuY7aG6nn6P/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1w8gpu3nkricw
