Before moving on to Revenge of Diablomon, I need to get this out.

I did not remember Oikawa at all from when I was a kid. I remembered Arachnemon and Arachnemon's Sidekick (but not Mummymon in particular). and I remembered Vamdemon as the ultimate villain, but Oikawa totally slipped my mind.

When Oikawa first came on the scene, I kinda just thought he was Vamdemon in a human guise. Like, evil Digimon in a trenchcoat, not unlike how Arachnemon and Mummymon present when not in their combat forms. Or a human directly possessed by Vamdemon, such that his persona is more Vamdemon than Oikawa. In my defense, he has the face of an undead monster.

This is not the case. Oikawa is his own character, and he's the one who ultimately drives the plot for the whole series. The Man Behind the Man Behind the Digimon Kaiser. Vamdemon is involved, but his influence is vague and poorly defined. He basically just comes in at the end to hijack the plot and give everyone a final boss to fight.

Villain-wise, this is Oikawa's show much moreso than Vamdemon's. And honestly, Oikawa is a pretty good villain! I wish I'd given him the credit he was due back in the day, but I must have been so Mind Blown by Vamdemon's return.

Oikawa wants to be a Chosen Child. That's his whole thing. He wants for himself and his best bro Hiroki to have had Digimon partners and gone on adventures in the Digital World when they were young. But he didn't get to have that so he stormed off and made his own Digimon with blackjack and hookers.

And that's really interesting. BlackWarGreymon gives Arachnemon and Mummymon a brief existential crisis when he points out that they're neither Digimon nor human. I kinda wish that had been explored more?

Because. Like. There's an answer to it that the show never explores, and it's honestly kinda fascinating. They were created from Oikawa's genome, right? Well, Digimon Partners are created from data scanned from the children they're partnered to during those times when those kids encountered Digimon.

Agumon was created from Taichi's data when he and Hikari first witnessed a Greymon fighting a Parrotmon all those years ago. That's how you become a Chosen Child. The Digital World scans you and then it makes a Digivice and a Digimon Partner for you. This was a plot point in the first series.

So if Partner Digimon are already created from data scanned from their partners, then is Arachnemon and Mummymon's situation really so unique? The pair of them are just Partner Digimon created by Oikawa instead of by the Digital World's natural process.

This is really cool, and echoes Ken's attempt to fabricate his own "better" Partner Digimon in Chimeramon. Except with Ken, it was an act of dismissive cruelty towards Wormmon. With Oikawa, it's colored by a tinge of sadness.

Oikawa made two Partner Digimon. Of course he made two. One of them's for Hiroki.

This is such a good character. Adventure 02 really is defined by its human antagonists, Ken and Oikawa. To the point that it makes the brief times that the kids fight evil Digimon feel kinda tacked on by extension.

Except you, BlackWarGreymon. You get a gold star. Though the Holy Stones plotline does reek of "We need some excuse for the kids to fight BWG so I guess this will work."

But Oikawa is fantastic, and my only complaint is honestly the same one I had for Ken: This was a great idea, and I wish there was more of it.

Oikawa deserves to be remembered as the true antagonist of Adventure 02, much moreso than Vamdemon.

Then again, wasn’t this supposed to be his world? A world he created from his mind? By that definition, no conversation could be random as everything inevitably had to involve him in some way.

Ken frowned. However, by that point, he lost the opportunity to dwell on it much longer as footsteps signaled that the conversation was over and both of the unknown men were leaving in different directions.

All was quiet, leaving Ken unable to do much more than think about his situation and the events that happened before he wound up in this hospital… particularly that man.

That man… his pasty complexion and gaunt face with dark eyes that pierced through him without mercy. That was Oikawa, right? He looked like the Oikawa Ken remembered, who was the friend of Iori’s late father and became the puppet of Beliel Vamdemon.

At the same time he wasn’t. That man wasn’t the Oikawa that Ken knew, not even slightly. The man he met stank of cigarettes and looked at him not as a pawn to use for his Dark Seed, but as a child that had been raving utter nonsense. He certainly was an unpleasant person, but the air around that man who looked like Oikawa was very different from the Oikawa Ken remembered.

Right?

Ken thought back to the incidents with Oikawa, Mummymon, and Arachnemon, but they were thin slips of moments. He recalled being in the truck with all the children Oikawa wanted to infect with copies of the Dark Seed, the man who died reaching the Digital World. His skin was the same tone then, pale, but without the tinge of gray that made man look like a walking corpse, but there was none of that softness he had in the end.

The memories of Oikawa, the puppet of Belial Vamdemon were few. The more Ken thought about it, the more other memories of a different Oikawa popped into his mind, a man who stank of cigarettes and arrogance. He remembered an incident where the man confronted him about Ryo after his friend went missing…

Missing?

The word rang a bell in Ken’s mind and he froze, forgetting all about Oikawa. Missing? Why would Ryo be missing? Ryo wasn’t missing, he was… The two of them…

Wait.

Why did Ken never spend any time with Ryo after their first adventure in the Digital World? He and Ryo were friends. Ryo had been there in the Digital World with him. Why hadn’t he ever stopped to wonder where his friend was when his adventure was over? Osamu died after that, but surely that didn’t…

Fun Fact: there are canon human/digimon hybrids in four of the Digimon series:

1. Adventure 02 has Arukenimon/Arachnemon and Mummymon, whobwere made from Oikawa's DNA and data (possibly Myotismon/Vamdemon's)

2. Tamers has the kids' Mega forms, where the kids and their partners fuse together.

3. Frontier has the kids turning into digimon, but still being human on the inside.

4. Savers has the Bio Team, who started out as humans, but can shift into digimon forms in the same way as the Adventure 02 pair.

Okay. I have a Digimon Ghost Game theory.

I don't think Gullusgammamon is the villain. I think instead he's basically a white blood cell that needs to be pointed at the actual villain.

Looking back over the season two things have stuck out.

1) most of the time the villain of the episode is

A) misunderstanding something (i.e. mummymon),

B) needs a partner that is now missing (manticoremon),

C) is looking for something but the ways to do it are either misconstrued or doesn't realize they are dangerous (sirenmon)

D) doesn't understand or care about the consequences (Sistercielmon)

Or

E) is doing something normal but it either gets hijacked or doesn't realize it is causing problems. (Toropiamon)

2) Gullusgammamon though has been deployed against two that were just evil with human body counts. Sealsdramon and Arachnemon.

3) Both times Gammamon felt lost, lonely, and out of options. Gammamon still doesn't know about Gullus

So, I think in the end, Gammamon will embrace Gullus and by doing so come into a role as a fierce protector. He'll grow up, and face off against something else. And now he will have back up to save the day for good.
