As I finish writing another episode of the Hi Nay Podcast for the premiere, I’m already both very excited for this podcast to be ready while also being sad I have to take the time to... actually write it

On that note, for all you amazing new followers out there, I’ve updated the cover! And myself and my co-creator are putting together the social media specific to the Hi Nay podcast, so we’re very excited.

If you want more information as I do the writing thing and finish writing these episode monologues and scripts so that I can record and edit them, feel free to send some questions! We’ve got a theme song, a show outline, and character profiles ready for our little production.

Hi Nay, literally translated to “Hi Mom”, is a supernatural horror fictional podcast about Filipina immigrant Mari Datuin, whose babaylan (shaman) family background accidentally gets her involved in stopping dangerous supernatural events in Toronto alongside two detectives, the warm and friendly Detective Murphy and the surly but tenacious Detective Donner.

Characters include:

Marilag Precious Datuin-Roces - MARI - a compassionate, sensible Filipina with a background in dealing with supernatural occurrences, who calls her mom often to tell her about every case she takes on with Donner and Murphy and sometimes shares anecdotes about her own experiences from her childhood, from The Time A Baby Tried To Murder Her to The Time She Slept In The Basement When A Monster Came Because Jesus Was Dead For A Day

[redacted] Donner - DONNER - a grim-faced Jamaican-Canadian detective whose analytical mind, matter-of-fact demeanour, and initially grumpy exterior seem in contrast with his unusually dogged pursuit of the supernatural

Richard Murphy - MURPHY - a charming, upbeat mixed Canadian detective whose belief (or lack thereof) in the supernatural is pushed to the side in favour of his extreme loyalty to Donner and care for the well-being of others

Laura Nichols - LAURA - a Canadian civilian who becomes Mari’s dear friend after she saves her from a traumatising supernatural attack, Laura’s sheer determination and strength of character (and arms) get her through her entirely warranted fears of the unknown

Ashvin Beeharee aka Guru Mahadev - ASHVIN - a fake celebrity guru of Indian-Mauritian background, Ashvin is a conman who sells faux spiritual remedies to gullible people - or at least, what he believes to be fake remedies. Despite being convinced of his own selfishness, he is often unwittingly helping others, which is something he is absolutely against.

Monkey Man 🤝🏾 The Hi Nay Podcast

Has a character whose life was destroyed by Hindu fundamentalism (Hindutva) but whose arc involves reclaiming his family's connection and belief in Hinduism, and also centrally worships Hanuman and bears the image of Hanuman opening his chest

This is the pendant Ashvin wears around his neck!

Credit to our VA Adil for helping build Ashvin's backstory. He's originally introduced as a conman fake guru with real magic powers, but discovering his powers makes him want to carry on his faith healer parents' legacy.

Meet the Cast of Hi Nay!

Hi Nay revolves around the adventures of Filipino immigrant Mari Datuin but she isn’t the only star of the show. The upcoming podcast also features a rainbow (and I don’t say ‘rainbow’ carelessly ;>) of loveable characters who help Mari along the way. Here’s everything you need to know about the main cast of Hi Nay!

Leon

Leon plays the gruff [redacted] Donner, a Jamaican-Canadian cop who seems to know more about the supernatural than he lets on. Leon is building a career in animation and voice acting, and the podcast is his first professional project. Growing up in Southern Ontario, Leon has always been interested in exploring different cultures and works of those cultures, which has led to his involvement with Hi Nay.

Abigayle Rhodes

Abigayle plays the sweet and energetic Laura Nichols, Mari’s neighbor turned best friend. Abigayle is a Hamilton-based artist, designer and creative. You can usually find them spending their days yelling at their sewing machine and watching reruns of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with their beloved cat Ninja, or going on adventures with their partner Shayne. The best way to get into Abigayle’s good graces is with a nice bottle of Canadian Rye and anything buffalo checked. Edward Boxler

Edward plays Richard Murphy, Donner’s charismatic partner whose loyalty knows no bounds. Edward is a filmmaker, writer, and content creator. Born and raised in Toronto, he loves coffee (any time of day), reading, writing, travelling, cars, the gym, and most of all, movie marathons. Two of his biggest “one day” goals are to drive across Canada while visiting every province, as well as to carve a pumpkin for Halloween. Adil R.

Adil plays Ashvin Beeharee, a conman who gets swept up in the supernatural and becomes one of Mari’s closest allies   —  albeit unwittingly. Adil moved to Toronto 10 years ago, from the island of Mauritius. A classically trained actor, he has multiple stage credits to his resume. He is also a writer and filmmaker, and is currently developing a documentary called As One People, about the multiculturalism of Mauritian people.
