"ink and imprints: sketching the story lines on my journey"

I was born on November 30,2005 at Cebu City,hello there I'm Brilliant Dia Brusas I have four siblings,two girls and 2 boys. I was 7 months old when I was born,so my aunt provide all the vitamins and milk for me because my mother has no work and that time my parents separated because my grandpa doesn't support them. When I was 1 year old,my parents meet again so my father pursue my mother. My grandpa realize that I need a father and my father has a right to live with us,so my grandpa accept my father and we build a house in Lapu-Lapu City. When I get older,I'm a naughty child and a bad attitude,I didn't listen to my parents so tey both hated me. I just realized that I need their attention,they are so busy working they even hired a maid to take care of me and whenever they will hired a maid I will do anything to make that maid leave so that my parents will be the one take care of me.

I have an elder sister,a half sister,she was born at Masbate. When I was 8 years old my sister came and live here at Cebu,at first I really hate it because my parents let me feel that I am not their family,what my sister wants they give it. They always make her feel that she will be loved by them. I can't hate my elder sister because whenever my parents mad at me she is their by my side comforting me,she is always there whenever I need someone to lean on.

When I was in Junior High School,grade 7 I met a lot of friends,o have two best friends but I feel like I'm not their best friends because I am poor they are rich. And I met someone,she is so kind,so beautiful,so humble and brainy I really admire her. We were so close,until grade 10. When I was in grade 7 there was a grade 10 student girl who likes me,she is a cousin of one of my friends but that time is I was straight:)) she gives me flowers,and she always ask me to go out with her but nah I like someone else that time and it was a boy (shesh). When I was grade 9 pandemic era,t was so boring so I made a rp account or role play account,I made a male account and disguised as a boy. There,I meet a girl,she is the reason why i turned into a lesbian. She is just a simple girl,morena,has this perfect shape of nose,a beautiful eyes. She confessed her feelings,but I can't accept even though I liked her too because she didn't know that I'm a girl. 5 months have passed,I decided to tell her the truth she's not mad she even thank me I forgot the reason but she left me,I can't stop her.

When I was in grade 10 my mother went abroad because she has no idea where she can find a job that suits her and can surely help us. My elder sister went back to Masbate to finish her study. I am the one who take care of my younger siblings because my father is busy at work,he left the house in dawn and went home at night. It was so hard for me because I need to take care of my study and my siblings need help when they have an assignment. I am the one who do the house chores and even cooked for them. Months have passed,my mother hired a made to help me.

When I graduated,I choose the school of asian Learning Center Inc. to discover the whole Lapu-Lapu City because I know I will meet a lot of friends there. I'm an introvert that time so it was so hard for me to make friends,but I was so thankful to have a sitmate that so friendly,Juniela(imissyou) and Ace,they are the reason that I'm so friendly now and turn my self into extrovert haha. When we were in grade 12 Juniela moved into modular. Being a grade 12 student,it was hard,fun, exhausted and we made a lot of experience.

Will explain something here about people in call center... They always eat and order food angels which is weird for me. Then,I feel conscious coz it is their main "trending act".

I told Yam ( Mhay-An Ranches ) the new sis but yesterday while teaching me on the situational scene on one of my clients, I told her I'm on a diet. I'm not plastics that I said even to Prixel that why you guys are making bad facial expression on me or you make face! But I said it in a nice way... I told Prixel,you know what supposed to be I'm already a manager in Cebu Pacific Air I also handled computer system stuff or we had a system tool as well but I was never a bad or bully old employee on the new hires... As well as some old good workmates there that were there earlier than me... My point we are just a month in Conduent angels... So, I knew we had the trainings in the classroom with Sho but some situational we didn't tackle coz we will only learn that by actual... I'm pointing out that in Cebu Pacific Air we didn't had a classroom lecture on Sita Gabriel that became a Skyport we learned everything on an actual. I never had a bad experienced on any of my x-workmates that became my friends or people who are there earlier than me... In Call Center people are weird, they are bashers and competitive in a bad way.

Then, I think I did calm the situation coz I said my heart contents on Yam ( from General Trias, Cavite as well ) and Prixel ( from Pasay).

What else? My TL is Krizzy, now I like her coz we are both a fanatic of "cuteness and cute stuff". She got a one daughter and one son and Krizzy is half-american but she told us married to an askal then separated now. MATURED PEOPLE LOVE CUTENESS AND CUTE STUFF...

UNCLE DD is as well plastics on me.... That's the negative of being an undergraduate. Even Uncle Jun... They have different character... In the family on the side of my biological mother the only college graduates are my brother next to me, Me and my Aunt Teresa who raised me here in their old house here. I'm not really happy being with them but I have no choice coz they are still my family or my blood related relatives. In a way, I feel envious on Mitch on having a good family,that's why she probably gave me this "simple battery"... I feel embarrass sometimes...

But on the good side of Uncle DD and Uncle Jun they are having a side lines to help us here on paying our bills in the house... But when it comes to point of view about life and about their character on me, we had have different ways of viewing life. Like I should still be pampered coz I had have windspin slash windblow that I should go back to being me even if I'm in call center. I'm not being arrogant but I know the way of living in the reality world, I know what is the right thing for each people. I graduated from De La Salle but Uncle Jun seems always putting me down.

I just hate them when they fully praise Chian or Chealsea who is presently working in baranggay but I want my half-sister to be active there in baranggay or to work there though she is an undergraduate but able to work in government office coz of power of George Eusebio. George Eusebio is her father in law which I hate most coz their power and fame are only on the side of biological mother.

Chian grew up with my biological mother meaning it is their positive points as uniting as a new blended family with George Eusebio. I hate them so much,until these days...

But I love the idea of Chian working in baranggay if in case we need something, there will be someone who is active in baranggay.

I don't like my family now but I hate people who got nice family but I know how to be professional on being a family member...

Like in my batch wave 2 in Conduent, I want them to give me a professional friendship and professional relationship like we need to link for the harmony and for unity for work and for having a decency of having a group or batchmates in Conduent.

I feel embarrass that I have an ugly family now but this is still my family and I need to be professional coz we still need to have a family. I feel jealous on people or men that like me! Who are having a good family then they will compare me? They will probably compare me on other women? I have complex... I have so many complex in me though I used to be spoiled. But now, we are having a financial tight budgeting. I feel bullshit! I hate commuting... I have complex!

We used to have a business and handled people... We used to have a "Karaoke Bar Club" somewhere in Makati... We earned millions before... I was pampered and spoiled.

I used to spend 10k in pesoses or more weekly... But now it will be a month... I feel self-pity... I used to have my derma schedule and I always visit my dentist.

Now, I need to go back to dentist and I can't afford to redo my teeth, my amalgam....It is a fixed amalgam... I spent thousand and thousands for it! Now, I don't have enough money to redo my teeth coz it's been decades2x...

I still need to visit dentist for the coffee stain and some stuff that needs to redo. I need to save money for it. I always brush my teeth coz of coffee stain.

Why do I want to become an architect?

When I was little I never understood what an architect does,

but I always knew that I want to make someone’s life better, specifically ours. I admire people who are good at inventing and innovating things. I enjoy making something out of nothing, and loves to find solutions to problems. It was only when I was about ten years old when my parents saw me sketching floor plans of my dream house that I heard the term “architecture”, and asked me if I wanted to become an architect or take up fine arts. I thought architecture is interesting, drawing and designing homes, but the information that I got from them was lacking, so I wasn’t convinced--- yet.

I grew up living in a one-storey provincial residence, above a three meter high cliff near the shore, prone to rain, high tide, earthquake, flood and storm, without electricity, under a tumble-down roof, having five siblings, a sickly mother, and a father that quit his job that I had no idea why. The spaces in the house were a huge clutter and very limited, knowing that there were eight occupants living inside. It was at that point when I realized, “We deserve more than this. I want our lives be better.”

Just by observing my mother, I have learned the art of organizing and decorating spaces, and how it directly affect one’s mood. I was in awe by just seeing a messy table in the living room filled with my father’s books and used cigars can make me feel uncomfortable and angry; and by how seeing the living room arranged by my mother during Saturdays can make me happy; how indoor plants can make me calm; and how windows are important for the flow of air and natural light.

I also sensed that we probably need another storey, so I convinced my father, and he asked for his friends’ help to build another storey for us. I enjoyed every day by just observing the construction process--- how the cement was mixed with water and aggregates, the beauty of pouring concrete, and the splendor of massing. When it was finished, I was disappointed how it did not turn out the way my parents wanted. I realized that we were in a financial crisis, that’s why the materials that they used were in low quality, and the standards were not met because we could not hire an architect.

Every riser in our staircase has a height of more than 200 millimetres, which is so high from the design standard, that my little sister and my cousin got an accident. They fell off and injured their legs. The foundation is not strong, too. After years, the ceiling on our ground floor had cracks and some of them would fell off the ground. Our floor is eventually sloping down from the movements of the sea waves during typhoons. During a stormy weather, raindrops would fall from our roof. It was a nightmare. Although I appreciate that finally, we have our separated bedrooms for girls and boys, I still feel that our house must be renovated one day.

The last semester of high school came, and unexpectedly I was called to leave the class, because my father was in the hospital, due to bone cancer. Before he died, I made a promise that one day I will make his dream house come to life. It is his legacy that he wanted to pass on me. So after high school I took the architecture entrance exam in EVSU and passed.

College made me fall in love with architecture even more, and it helped me expand my views from my instructors, peers, travels, and researching. It keeps me desire more in renovating our house one day. Architecture is such a broad subject. It has different meanings, as much as we have different architects that changed our world. But more than anything, architecture for me, is a tool to make our lives better.

Super-typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) came and we lost our roof. Our house is ruined. I have to become an architect as soon as possible. Now that we are in a pandemic, I believe that architecture is the solution, or if not, is one of the solutions, to help us live comfortably, safe and sound in the new normal. Architects are constantly finding ways.

I admit, I failed the pass board exam, and it still kills me to the bone. It’s embarrassing and frustrating. But as my mentor had always told me, “failure is never final.” He, too failed his first board exam. He is a top-notcher the following board exam he took. Because of him, I still have this vision to help my family and other people. Being an architect is the way, and I want to become like him one day.

Why do I want to become an architect? The answer is simple: To make people’s lives better.

I have a passion for people, as much as buildings and environment. It’s a topic where you can ask: How are people different? How do they live differently? How are people affected by geography and climate? How do religion, economics and personal beliefs change how people interact with their surroundings? Architecture is a never ending topic of fascination.

How humans interact with the buildings and the spaces around them is what makes it so exciting. My hunger for this idea has encouraged me to explore as much as I can. I have learned that architecture is principally about design. And design is about making decisions. Architects actively enjoy the decision making process in all areas of their lives. Moreover, their decisions are always for the people and the environment.

In conclusion, all these personal experiences, all the things I learned in college, from the wisdom that I got from my mentor during my internship, and the variety of ideas and information that I got from different people and places, have proven that our lives can be better through design, planning and rational ways of making a home and building a safe environment.

Jennifer, a domestic worker from thePhilippines, avoided going out too much after Hong Kong recorded its first coronavirus case on January 22 and fears began to grow about the outbreak. But in early February, she decided to attend a mass in Fortress Hill.

Jennifer, who gave only her first name, said she was away from her employers’ home in Sai Kung from 10.30am to about 12.30pm. “When I returned, they asked for my smart card [to enter the flat] and told me to pack my things right away.”

She did not have a place to go. But “luckily I had friends who were off that day too and they helped me”, said the migrant, 46, who is now living in a church-run shelter.

Jennifer is among dozens of foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong who have been fired in recent weeks amid the coronavirus outbreak gripping the city, based on accounts from more than five migrants and advocates.

Reasons cited for their dismissal ranged from arguments over the time they were allowed to spend outside the house on their days off, to employers claiming they had lost their jobs or were leaving the city.

Migrants who have been sacked say they are now struggling to find new jobs in Hong Kong, which has seen two deaths from more than 90 coronavirus cases – including two domestic workers from the Philippines who tested positive for the virus, which causes a disease known as Covid-19 – in February.

After having their contracts terminated, foreign domestic workers are usually allowed to remain in Hong Kong for only 10 days. But since the outbreak, many have sought to extend their visas in order to file labour claims, while some could not return to the Philippines after Manila on February 2 issued a temporary ban on travel from China, including Hong Kong and Macau.

This ban was partially lifted on February 18, but migrants say it has still been challenging to return home, as both Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have cancelled all flights to the city until the end of March, and some workers cannot afford more expensive options.

Jennifer, who first arrived in Hong Kong in 2003, said she had been to several job interviews over the past four weeks but her recent dismissal seemed to be an obstacle in getting hired and she was now waiting to fly home.

“Finding another employer seems more difficult now than before. An agency told me that I should not share the real reason, because it looks like I was being selfish and disobedient. They will judge me right away,” she said.
