What can you tell us about Sebastian?! O.O
My newest hyperfixation?
HEYYYYYYY MITYYYYYYYYYYY 💖💖💖 Thank you for the ask, broski. ✨ So, let me introduce you
SEBASTIAN RIVA
Tumblr media
Sebastian Riva is the younger of two sons of Leone Riva. He is almost four years younger than Mau, so in 1927 Sebastian is 18.
(Little reminder: Leone Riva is the best friend of Augusto Venza since their childhood, and it was him who invited the Venza family to move to New York from Turin. I mentioned him in Augusto’s bio here.)
Unlike his older brother Paolo, Seb is as far away as possible from his father's illegal business and the underworld in general. In a way, Sebastian and Maura are similar; both are driven by natural curiosity, but this trait manifested itself in both of them in different ways. Seb is the kind of child who will destroy take apart all the devices in the house to see how they work, and who will fidget in his chair, thinking how these complicated things can be improved. He's especially attracted to automobiles. If he didn't have to eat and sleep, he probably wouldn't leave the garage. And to capture all his discoveries he had a little hobby in the form of drawing.
Fun fact: Seb inherited the entrepreneurial drive of his ancestors and in his youth was already well off with money, drawing erotic pictures almost to the whole neighborhood. 😂 For this he got a few hits with a broom from Mau, but Seb managed to literally buy her silence with 10% of his profits. 🤣
In 1927, Sebastian entered university and began studying engineering. There he continued to draw for money, but this time not only naked bodies, but mostly course works on drafting for other students. Subsequently, he successfully got a job at an automobile factory and married a racer, for whom he, among other engineers, improved the racing bolide. He was head over heels in love with this girl and was so zealous to meet her that he almost threw himself under her wheels. As we already know, in the end he got her favor, and has never regretted it for all the long years of his life.
I think the guy hit the lifetime jackpot. Let's be happy for him. x))
TL;DR

Someone she knows just had a baby and Mau is asked if she wants to hold it, how odes she react?
follow-up question is she good with kids?
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for the ask, @coffeintheface, it was super cute to draw! I love to dive into such cozy scenes, they soothe me, and I hope you'll feel that warmth, too. ✨💖✨
And it was the perfect opportunity to show Mau as a kid. :3 Augusto daily tried his best to braid her hair, let's praise the man, he's a pro now. x))

From the recent talk with my husband. xdd
Andrew: So Mau and Rocky only have her father from the older relatives, right?
Me: Why, there's also Nina. Just imagine what their first meeting with Augusto would've been. :D
Andrew: Well, he is Italian. A spectacular man. He'll manage.
Me: Mm-hm, yeah, Augusto is like: "Piacere di conoscerla, signora!" and kisses her hand. And Nina blushes and shyly giggles in response. While both Freckle and Rocky are panicking in the background with their faces screaming "UNDO IT, UNDO IT!!!!!!!!"
Andrew: Come on, it'll be fine, both Italian and Irish people are catholic. I'm sure Nina and Gusto will get along well!
Me, chuckling: Maaaybe, but not in a romantic way. That would've been a totally disastrous marriage for countless reasons. :'D
Andrew with a hilariously sad exhale: Eh, the unfairly forbidden love union of pizza with potatoes... :c

Finally made a proper character page for my Lackadaisy OC! Maura Venza, please love and favor. :3
Tumblr media
The art is based on Girl on a Ball by Pablo Picasso. When I tried to imagine a perfect allegory of the character dynamics between Mau and her father, that was the first thing that came to my mind. So here it is. Picasso, but with cats.

question in the subject of the marvelous miss maura!! what's the relationship between her and rocky? is there a romance between those two kitties or is it platonic? oh-- and dynamics!! how are they like? pardon the onslaught of questions, that art you did of them piqued a lot of interest! sending hugs and hearts your way rudni <333333
Omgomgomgomgomgomg my first ask aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *runs around in circles*
Mars, Iza, thank you, honeybuns, I’m honored, hug both of you tightly <333 I’m a bubbling puddle now ✨ QwQ ✨
Answering your questions: yes, I see an opportunity to intertwine Rocky’s and Maura’s storylines and develop their relationship in a romantic way, BUT this is not necessary at all. These folks just communicate quite well and like to play verbal ping pong with each other. :3 But friendship is the strongest foundation for romantic relationship, isn’t it? So, yes, I can consider this option. Despite Maura is a talkative one, she is also a very eager, curious and attentive listener, while Rocky is a VERY erudite guy and a fount of unusual information, who clearly won’t neglect unironically interested listeners. Therefore, these two characters can quite soon turn from “the restless oddball” and “the chirping firecracker” into friends and, eventually, into something more. A flame thrown into fireworks. It will definitely be loud, bright and fun.
I guess Rocky and Mau would generally have a lot of strange, but mutually interesting topics to discuss. Like, on the one hand, Rocky can recite Yeats and Mau is quite savvy about the Gershwin brothers’ musicals, but on the other hand, both can easily stuck on discussing the issue of “do bugs crawl or walk in a recumbent position”. :D
I can even imagine how these two might spontaneously get married because of an accidentally blurted out series of utterly stupid puns. Because it’s simply something fun to do. Like, they sneak out on the roof in the night, chatting incessantly, and then
Mau: You won’t do such a felony to me. Rocky: A fell-on-knee? Well, I can dare. Mau: And if I agree you’ll dare to do it right now? Rocky: Oh, Miss Venza, it would be such a delight, but no one will marry us in the dead of night. Mau: The dead of night, huh? I remember you told me about some business you run with a funeral home. There's supposed to be a minister. A funeral home marriage in the dead of night. Sounds like a perfect match.
And soon Rocky, arm in arm with Mau, will be banging on the door of the Arbogast Funeral Home, and if the face of sleepy Abelard Arbogast could have stretched more from their request, it would have stretched. :D Though everyone should pray for Rocky if Maura’s father, Augusto Venza, knows about it. Just remember what Viktor did to those guys who decided to woo Ivy. Augusto would have reacted the same in case of his daughter and Rocky. He will simply break the poor guy in half like a dry spaghetti noodle, so secrecy is the only option here. :D
Aside from any jokes, Rocky’s and Maura’s skill to use words sharper than knives is the reason why they will get along not only because it is mutually entertaining. Both Rocky and Mau are accustomed to create an image that’s somehow different from what they prefer to expose as an armor, but it’s hard to hide your soul forever from a person who literally exactly knows how to pin people. What questions to ask and how to ask them. Rocky and Mau simply won’t manage to hide the truth about themselves from each other. And when one of them hits the right spot, a dark page of one’s biography or some fondest memories, Her Majesty empathy gets onstage. And here they are, developing trust and, eventually, affection. Knowing each other’s weaknesses, but never daring to use them after revealing them. Their little secrets, hidden between their words and smiles understood only by them. Friendship, that deepens into partnership.
I guess mainly that’s it and I hope I answered your questions, guys! Thank you SOOOO MUCH for asking and giving me an opportunity to write about this. <333
P.S.: Though I have some additional thoughts on the subject, I’ll prefer to hide them under the cut for the most curious readers. :3
For everything I wrote above it is necessary to, uh, make some assumptions. Firstly, the events in Lackadaisy, at least in the comic, are developing rapidly, and it is not an easy task to insert another arc there, especially a romantic arc. We simply need to have more extended time periods between the main events in the comic to get the opportunity to add a romantic subplot for any character. Secondly, Rocky, no matter how much we all love The Best Boi, is a doomed character with a very strong line of development that, ironically, can be easily skewed by romantic subplot as such, which, if it is added, must add something crucial to Rocky’s improvement as a character. Not to mention that he has a huge chance not to survive at the end of the comic. To fit romantic feelings into Rocky’s character arc to add an interesting angle to his already mastery canonical development, motivation and character itself is also an extremely non–trivial task. I’m not sure if I can manage it, ha-hah. Besides, every time I thought about it while writing an answer to this ask, the potential outcomes of intertwining Rocky’s and Maura’s storylines are rather angsty and gloomy due to these characters’ personal arcs.
It is not a secret that Rocky’s main intention is to save the sinking ship called Lackadaisy, as it is the place he belongs to and considers much more of a home due to his core, deep inner loneliness. If any personal romantic interest somehow outweighs his role of the “Lackadaisy savior”, it will inevitably cause a conflict in Rocky: a choice between “me and my personal happiness” and “the well-being of my home and family (Lackadaisy)”. The easiest way to solve it (from the character's point of view) is to combine these two elements, and if Rocky considers Maura as his ladylove… many obstacles occur on their way. Mau and her father are literally chased by the criminal syndicate from New York, and Mau herself has nowhere to go and is doomed to flee with her father. She is sick of this situation by the time when the Lackadaisy comic takes place, but she can’t solve it, especially because she has lack of personal money. No escape. At all. And if it’s the matter of earning money the only thing Mau can do very well is playing pool for bets, but rumors spread in a jolt, so if she uses this skill in any underworld establishment, it will draw guaranteed and definitely unwanted attention both to Maura and this establishment. Rocky has no money either, and the best he can offer to Mau is to live together in a car (:D) or to run away and wander together, which he won’t do because of, look upwards, his main intention to save Lackadaisy. And if Rocky, God forbid, will suggest Mau to run away with him and work for the Lackadaisy speakeasy (again, in order to share with her his home and his chosen family), it will be equivalent to throwing an armful of dynamite sticks in his own cherished home. The last thing that Lackadaisy needs is the attention of another potential rival in addition to Marigold. And though I can imagine many warm and enjoyable romantic interactions between these two, as a narrator I MUST admit that Rocky and Maura fallen in love = a disaster multiplied by ten. Ka-boom. No survivors.
So, if Rocky and Mau decide to develop their relationship in a romantic way, it will be an interesting plot… and an interesting game of survival. And which bet will win in this game is unpredictable. But let’s hope they’ll handle it. Let’s hope they will.

Augusto Venza...
At first sight you’ll see a tired grumpy middle-aged man, whose glance is so heavy that can almost kill, and who works in the kitchen of his own small eatery in St. Louis. But would you believe that once there was a lively lighthearted guy behind his shell?
Augusto was born in 1885 and raised in a small village in Piemonte. His family owned a small vineyard and sold their wines through their neighbors, the Riva family. But Gusto had many other ways to occupy himself besides the family business. Very... nasty ways. Gusto Venza was not a mere firecracker, he was a freaking BOMB. He was loud, he was reckless, he was hot-headed as hell in both his words and actions. A troublemaker is a word too dim to describe his behavior in youth. He and his best friend Leone Riva were the headache of the whole village. It all settled down a bit in 1902, when Rivas migrated to the U.S., and Augusto was entrusted with the duty to sell the wines himself. To tell the truth, Gusto wasn't smart or experienced enough for such a task, but he coped with it somehow, purely with the help of his irrepressible energy and charm that were truly hard to resist.
That's why, when he ended up in Turin in 1904 and met Federica, the daughter of one of the wealthy customers, the spark between two 18-year-olds turned into the fire so quickly.
And very soon Federica found herself pregnant.
There was a huge scandal. And though Gusto did all he could to marry Federica, her family rejected his proposal. They insisted that the only way of solving such a disastrous accident is to break Federica and Augusto apart and to send the child into the orphanage after their birth. To Augusto's highest disappointment, Federica refused to go against her parents will, no matter how hard he tried to change her mind. She was too afraid to do so. But Gusto was stubborn enough to convince Federica's parents at least to give him the child. A few bribes, and in 1905 the newborn Maura was registered under her father’s surname and without any real mother's name mentioned.
That was supposed to be a happy ending, but Gusto's father and stepmother also refused to help him. “It will be a fatal blow for the family’s reputation and business”, that’s what they told, when he returned home with a baby in his arms.
So, Augusto, furious and offended, cut all ties with Federica and his own family, took the baby and tried to start his life with a clean slate. But three lonely years in Turin destroyed him to the core. It was a miracle that both he and Maura survived those harsh times. Gusto was poor as dirt, had no support and had troubles finding a stable job, because he often skipped the shifts in order to take care of Mau. Only in 1908 Augusto's devastation was literally cried out in the letter to Leone. Not expecting any sympathy, Gusto told him everything he hid before out of shame. By that moment he has already faced the fact that his own failures led him to such a horrible life. But he simply couldn't hold it inside anymore.
Still, his best friend didn't abandon him. Instead, Leone sent Augusto some money and invited him to New York. Gusto had nothing to lose, so he packed his meagre possessions and headed to the U.S. with his daughter.
To say that the Riva family helped Augusto would be an understatement. In every sense they saved his life. Gave him a job in the kitchen of their cafe&bar in South Village, a small corner to live until he manages to rent a room by himself, looked after Mau when he couldn’t. No wonder Augusto became the most loyal and devoted person to the Riva family and was ready to do literally anything for them and Leone in particular. By the time when Prohibition started Leone became the one who ran the business, and when he decided to turn the bar into a speakeasy, Augusto didn't say a word against and stayed Leone’s right-hand man, delivering moonshine and doing many unsavory things. In 1923 he even allowed Maura to play pool on bets there, when she was offered that job. He wasn’t blind; he knew Mau was talented and he, as a truly loving father, respected her decision to try to catch her luck. Moreover, despite Augusto had no faith in criminal patrons who covered Leone's speakeasy, he trusted Leone with his life, so Augusto's condition for Maura’s occupation in the gambling club at the speakeasy was simple: his daughter must stay untouched. Only playing pool and nothing else.
Everything seemed to be fine until one awful night in 1926 Maura returned home all pale, shaking and deadly silent, with her hair and dress ruined. The memory of his shivering daughter, of her teary eyes with a blank sight, still chases Augusto in his worst nightmares. When Maura after a few hours finally whispered the name, Augusto's rage was ready to burst out like a volcano.
And he didn't suppress it. The very next day he massacred the security and... well, let's just say that after what Augusto did to that criminal lord the latter considered being shot as a merciful blessing. From him Augusto also stole the papers that could expose one of the powerful criminal syndicates in New York, including involvement of some corrupt authorities.
…and only then he understood what a horrible mess he had created.
So, as usually, he came to Leone, told him everything and gave those crucial papers, because these documents could have destroyed Leone’s business and endangered his family, too, and bringing them to the police or some press would have been totally unwise. After much deliberation, Leone and Augusto decided that the latter will leave the city with his daughter, while Leone will secretly keep the documents and try to play the poor cards they got to avoid as much damage and gain as much profit from that awful situation as possible.
Augusto immediately took Maura and fled from New York to the unknown direction, leaving the syndicate in the full confidence that he is the one who has broken one of the crucial gears of the syndicate and is holding both 'the valuable asset' Maura and the dangerous documents. Since then the Venza family has scurried from place to place, moved from state to state, covering their tracks, and tried to lie as low as possible. Augusto became completely jammed to the thought that he can't send his daughter away and wander alone, because if she is found, he won't be able to protect her, being far away, and that twisted his caring and protective nature into something nearly paranoidal. All their money rapidly melted away into nothing. From July of 1926 to March of 1927, the Venza family spent relatively quietly in Kansas City, even opening a small eatery; until Augusto in a call receives a hint from Leone that Kansas City may as well become unsafe for them soon. So, in April of 1927, the Venza family ends up in St. Louis, where they also rent a small place for the eatery and do their best to live a quiet, unremarkable life away from any criminal activities. Cherishing the hope that their past will fade into oblivion someday.
However, St. Louis has its own underworld, and who knows, what will happen, if the Venza family becomes involved into it again. But that’s a whole other story to tell…

Hi, Heldig!
Can you please tell me what's popular at Mau's and her father's cafe? What's on the menu at their place? There's a cute chubby accountant there who really likes donuts :)
*blinks in puzzlement, being suddenly summoned to tumblr with a loud POOF* Huh? Someone rolled a natural 20?
Oh, hi, pumpkin! Tysm for the question (OMG you made a LackaOC??? Can’t wait to see them! ✨)
I don't want to make you sad, but Maura’s and Augusto’s eatery is small and their menu doesn’t have a huge range of positions. I can almost bet there were no donuts on the menu when they’ve just opened the eatery.
All due to the fact that there are only two workers: Augusto as the cook, and Mau as the waitress. All the other responsibilities, as cleaning, dishwashing, accounting and so forth, they share equally.
The menu, actually, is not a constant. The only thing that is always there is coffee and some basic chocolate bars that they just buy. Everything else varies depending on the seasonal supplies and Augusto’s mood & enthusiasm for the day. There can be some variations of fruitcakes, pies, sandwiches, pizza and salads, pasta of the week (they make it themselves) and soup of the day, ice cream (also handmade). Not all at once, just mainly you can see something like that on the menu for the day. The most popular thing is definitely their pasta in all its variations. Augusto is just too good at making it, so it is almost a crime not to order it.
And speaking of menus and crimes; God forbid a visitor asks Mau to cook them “something special”. She cooks well, but… it is always equal to picking a jelly bean from the Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans box. There’s always a chance to get something like infamous sugary pizza or salty coffee with basil. She likes… ugh… strange experiments sometimes. So even I can’t tell you what’ll be on the menu at the days when Augusto is under the weather or has some other business outside the eatery and Mau gets responsible for cookery.
Though after a while Mau can persuade her father to add donuts (and pancakes) to the menu or start to make them herself for some “special guests”. Especially if “the cute accountant” can help her to keep the books in order. She usually does the accounts herself, but hates it as such, so she would try her best to arrange that accounting-for-donuts barter. 😁

HEY, DUDES!
I want to push the content forward, but simply don't know where to start better, SO
MY INBOX NEEDS YOUR ASKS
If you want to know smth about Mau and/or her father Augusto, any little or significant things, or you want me to write some short story about them (I can include any canonical Lackadaisy characters or your OCs there hehe) or to draw smth with any of them, PLEASE POKE ME
POKE MEEE x))
P.S.: Please keep in mind that I can write pretty fast, but any art/comic-like-thing can take a while 'cause I'm a newbie with a graphic tablet and drawing always requires extra efforts from me (but I'll try, I would like to practice).

AHEM!
what can you tell us abt the father-daughter relationship augusto has with mau? we wanna know all that we can abt them 🤲‼️
WOAH, DUDES, I'M FINE, BUT LEMME HUG YOU BOTH, MY LOVELY PUMPKINS, I HOPE YOU'RE ALSO DOING WELL AND WILL DO FOREVER AND EVER ✨😭✨
*politely coughs*
So, to your excellent question. :3
I guess, when you imagine a healthy family bond between father and daughter, that will be it.
Augusto may not be a good man, but he is definitely a good father. His parental love and care for Maura are beyond any limits, and he did everything he could to give her a decent life, even if for him that meant to abandon everything he had and to start over from scratch in a totally unfamiliar country. Surprisingly, even with all the life struggles and his own difficult character, he managed to create a perfect balance between parenting and giving Mau enough freedom, so in the end she has grown into a confident and self-reliant young woman. But God forbid anyone hurt his precious daughter... believe me, no one would want to meet furious Augusto Venza. Especially for that kind of reason.
Mau loves her father, too. She has always trusted him and never doubted the statement that "papa will always help", moreover, she never felt bad about the absence of the mother in her life. As I've said, she had enough freedom to explore the world herself and form her own personality, while always feeling herself protected and supported. She also cares for Augusto and makes sure he doesn't forget about himself, which he unintentionally does sometimes.
So, basically, these two are a warm and healthy family.
But the latest circumstances of their lives, when Mau was badly hurt and Augusto, uh, eliminated the factor that hurt her, made Augusto way too overprotective towards Mau and much more paranoidal and hostile to the world around. That created a strain in their relationship. Though Maura understands why everything is the way it is, and why her father acts that way, recently, for the first time in her whole life, she is frustrated by the lack of leeway and personal space and feels herself caged. They discussed it dozens of times, argued much, but to no avail. Until the problem with the syndicate is solved somehow, it is hard to change anything.
However, those two still love each other and, I guess, almost nothing can break their family bond.
Thank you for that question, I'm very-very happy ✨❤️✨

I took one of Olivia Hussey's and Leonard Whiting's photos as a reference. I had to change the clothes for both Rocky and Mau, but tried to convey emotions. The ref is under the cut. ✨
