“Sefton", 864 Mt Macedon Road Mt Macedon, circa 1918.
Sefton was originally established by the Baillieu family as a private summer family holiday retreat in the early 1900s.
The Baillieus sold Sefton in 1968 for $65,000 to the mining companies CRA and North Broken Hill, which sold to Fosters brewing group in 1983 for $475,000. In 2015 it was bought from the Fosters Group by Gribbles Pathology founder Wallace Cameron for a then record price of $8,175,000, against a reserve of $4.62 million.
The main house has seven bedrooms with ensuites, a deluxe kitchen, library, billiard room and multiple living areas, including an atrium-style sitting room with a glass roof. The property also features a three-bedroom manager’s cottage and a 10-bedroom, 10-bathroom lodge used as a conference centre by previous owners, the Foster’s Group. There is also a helipad, four-green nine-tee golf course, a croquet lawn, a tennis court and swimming pool.

Ney in Guttstadt, 1807
This brief snippet is taken from "Publicationen aus den Preußischen Staatsarchiven" (Publications from the Prussian State Archives), Vol. 29, Leipzig 1887, from a larger compilation of diplomatic documents published by P. Bailleu. It’s the beginning of a longer report by one general von Kleist, whom I suspect to be Friedrich Emil von Kleist, aide-de-camp of the Prussian king, who was sent to negotiate with Napoleon by the end of February 1807. The report is written in French, in Ortelsburg on 2 March 1807. On the way to see Napoleon, Kleist was first brought to Marshal Ney.
[Header in German:] On 23 February, Kleist met Ney in Guttstadt.
The marshal received me with politeness, but it was easy to perceive how disappointed he was by the retreat after the battle of Eylau. Initially after the first customary compliments, he began to speak to me about this day, and after some retorts which I made to him, he went with great steps to close the door of the adjoining room where his aides-de-camp were; then he said to me: "It is the vivacity of the Emperor which caused this battle to not have a brilliant outcome; he pushed too much forward with few men, and once engaged, he did not want to retreat. He acted by small batches, and this is why we could not obtain from this victory the same brilliant results as from the preceding ones, which would have been done, if one had waited for the arrival of my army corps which was supposed to move on Schloditten, as well as the arrival of the army corps of Marshal Davout, whose advance only engaged towards the evening with the enemy, and the army corps of Marshal Bernadotte, which was still not there; but finally we always won the battle...". In addition, I found in him a man of much vivacity, having a very active mind and speaking with much understanding about the military movements.
So that’s a German who found Ney polite and intelligent for once, as opposed to all the other reports I’ve posted before. It’s also interesting how openly Ney talks to this Prussian enemy – there’s not even a treaty so far! - about military matters. This fits in quite well with other things I’ve read, all showing a huge amount of discontent with Napoleon’s decisions during that time in the army.

It his is just too good: this piece is about the duplicity of statutory authorities and the media to street art: OUTRAGED! and yet wanting to court it.
