Montreal Jazz Fest misses an opportunity
My wife and I have long been big fans of the Montreal International Jazz Festival (MIJF). Over the years, we have enjoyed countless shows and have marveled at the first-rate organization of this huge festival. We have always derived a great sense of pride from this world-renowned Montreal event. We have always derived a great sense of pride from this world-renowned Montreal event. Last Sunday…

I attended the local jam last night. I’m constantly reminded that Melbourne is one of the greatest cities in the world for music.  A Monday night and there’s a weekly funk/jazz jam five minutes from my house. It’s the Melbourne International Jazz Festival this week, so there’s also a late night jazz jam every night this week at the Jazzlab. There’s been controversy in Melbourne’s jazz scene with the opening of a ‘New York Style’ jazz club who are running their own Monday night jazz jam this month as part of their own Bird’s Basement International Jazz festival.
Suffice it to say there was three conflicting jazz jams last night. On a Monday. What a city.
The one I attended was drummer central. Six drummers got up to play with a couple more who didn’t get a chance because we ran out of time. The music runs the gamut from swing to funk. One chord vamps to up-tempo blues. Once you’re on stage you figure out what you’re playing and have at it. I played a bossa, hardly my forte.
Jams are a particularly interesting space. I’m amazed by this idea that I’ve spent years practicing this craft and I share a common language with a bunch of people I’ve never met. Music is collaborative. Sure, you can create music on your own. And there’s amazing drummers who do solo concerts. But for the most part music is a couple of people on stage working towards a common goal. And it works. I struggle to think of other aspects of humanity where such a diverse range of people engage in an activity together and it just works. Maybe I’ve missed out on the Improv theatre world. Maybe this exists in some small form in comedy (but are there completely improvisational comedy nights where a group of people are thrown on stage and forced to be funny with each other?).
Differing styles meld and mash and sometimes a drummer is great and sometimes they aren’t, but music always comes out at the end. And even if it falls apart it never completely stops. There’s always someone who can pull it back together or shout directions or signal an ending. Sometimes the endings are delayed as a certain member misses the cue and goes around for another chorus of solo. Sometimes that extra chorus turns into five minutes and you see the other instrumentalists getting tired, but we’re all just good enough that we can make it to the end.

You know now that I think about it the people who play the books that most the fandom doesn’t like are probably ones who don’t complain all the time
literally the way that baby bump and witness stans are so quiet ......

So here’s my first post. It would be a massive understatement to say I’m unfamiliar with Tumblr, its operational specificities and blogging in general, but I decided to channel my frustration into getting this going, that is, frustration at having just missed out on tickets to see Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science at this year’s Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
I literally missed out by one ticket. The silver lining is that I’ve now discovered Terri and Social Science. The link here gives info about their upcoming performance at the festival and has an embedded one-minute video of the four jamming together. It’s a super simple minute of music – at least compared with what pundits can expect to hear from most of the other international acts coming to this year’s festival – but, in some imprint ways, its the jazz equivalent of the sort of electronic music I’m trying to make.
...
A woman from MIJF just called me and said they have two more tickets. Fuck. Yes. Looks like I’m going with my dad after all.
Back to the music: I think the simplicity yet purpose of the music in the video is what appeals to me. I’ve realised that I can try to make quite complex music; some of the first songs I produced are, musically, more complex than the stuff I’ve been recently making. But it wasn’t as decided and purposeful, traits that I now feel fortify my music-making more than ever.
I used to try to make my music complex a bit more than I do now. That’s probably an unhealthy direction to set off in when making any art, because it can easily supersede the feeling of the product and process. Simple – at least my version of simple – is fulfilling and more enjoyable when applied with confidence and purpose.
