Riverstar: Video Game-Inspired Instrumentals With A Hip-Hop Twist.
Her latest EP, “The Return to the Crystal Canyon,” will take the audience on a unique journey!
October 2023 - Riverstar, also known as River, is a very imaginative artist who likes to think outside the box when creating music that’s quite one-of-a-kind. She has a focus on video game-inspired instrumentals, seamlessly intertwined with hip-hop influences and a lo-fi twist.
Because of this rather distinctive combination of styles, Riverstar is able to create a captivating sonic signature that transcends genres, leading to more immersive listening experiences for the audience. Her music isn't just a collection of tracks; it's an intricate narrative that leads the audience on a cinematic adventure, much like getting lost in the worlds and captivating characters of a video game.
The world of hip-hop might feel quite far removed from the idea of video game music. However, Riverstar created a good balance between these two styles. The ebb and flow of hip-hop merges well with the otherworldly nature of video game soundtracks and their grander scope. This fusion results in a musical experience that's both familiar and fresh, expansive yet nuanced, and even intimate in its own right. The EP features three songs, including the first track, “Where should we go next?” - This song serves as a really good introduction to what people can expect from the mood of this release. The track kicks off with a really cool arpeggio, which adds a dreamy and mesmerizing mood along with the ambient drone that makes the ambiance stand out. Underneath it all, a simple yet articulate beat drives the music, making for a truly fascinating experience. This particular track actually reminds me of Stewart Copeland’s now legendary soundtrack for one of the older Spyro The Dragon games. The whimsical melodies add to the color and rhythm of the music, and the arrangement has a really smooth flow. The second song, “Deep within the Crystal Canyon” also offers some mesmerizing arpeggio, but it takes it all up a notch with some massive bass tones! The synth lines providing sub-energy in the mix are beefy and assertive, but they never overpower the main melody that drives the composition forward. The song still allows the beautiful arpeggios to breathe, making for yet another exciting sonic adventure in music. The third and final track on this release is titled “Robot Dragon-Spiders?!” and it is the shortest of all 3. However, the arrangement is just as rich and detailed. This time, the fuzzy synth lines and wonderfully dynamic beats actually remind a bit of retro-gaming sounds. There is something vaguely lo-fi about the aesthetics of this song, especially in the saturation of the drums and the synth lines.
Riverstar's knack for infusing her music with a very motion-driven twist, especially through the use of arpeggiated patterns, further adds depth to her compositions. This is a great way to add some nostalgic vibes without necessarily compromising the momentum of her compositions.
To conclude, one of the standout features of this EP release is its remarkable diversity. From the upbeat and energetic melodies that accompany the arrangements to the enchanting and tranquil ambient soundscapes in the background, the music has it all. The tracks really evoke a video game scenario where players get to explore fantastic environments. Even though this music isn’t associated with any game in particular, you can almost see the world coming to life right before your eyes (and, more importantly, ears!)
Each track on “The Return to the Crystal Canyon” is thoughtfully crafted to immerse players in the unique atmosphere of the compositions. The use of a wide range of sounds adds depth and texture to Riverstar’s work, creating a rich sonic texture that mirrors the rich visual world of some of the best adventure video games.
If you want to hear more from this artist, you’re in luck! In addition to her original compositions, Riverstar also does a lot of unique remixes, which she posts on her YouTube channel, highlighting her ability to reimagine and transform music into something entirely her own.
Find out more about Riverstar, and do not miss out on the artist’s most recent releases, activities, and events.

Steep Canyon Rangers at Murphy Theatre, Wilmington, Ohio, July 22, 2023
Aaron Burdett took the stage at Wilmington, Ohio’s, Murphy Theatre to explain how, some 20 years earlier, the Steep Canyon Rangers began their career playing and singing around a single mic.
With that, Burdett’s fellow Rangers sauntered on to the dimly lit stage and began their second set with “Fare Thee Well, Carolina Girls” from their forthcoming, Darrell Scott-produced Morning Shift. The album marks Burdett’s recording debut with the band he joined one year ago, replacing founding guitarist/singer Woody Platt.
The Rangers’ intimate, five-song interlude was a respite from a balky sound system that plagued the 21-song, two-hour show with drums that were too loud and a band so quiet, lead players were buried in their bandmates’ accompaniment and/or drowned out by the enthusiastic, half-full house.
Burdett and the new songs aren’t the only things that are different about the post-pandemic Rangers. Masked fiddler Nicky Sanders has virtually abandoned his whirling-dervish stage persona and cedes more musical space to Barrett Smith (acoustic bass/guitar and vocals), Mike Guggino (mandolin, harmony vocals), Mike Ashworth (drums, Dobro and harmony vocals) and Graham Sharp, the baritone Ranger who played acoustic and electric banjo, acoustic guitar and harmonica and is the band’s on-stage leader among equals.
As always, virtuosic instrumentalists and impeccable vocalists, the new-look, lower-energy Rangers’ chemistry is still gelling, though Burdett - who sings his own compositions such as “Deep End” and Platt-fronted numbers like “Get Me out of this Town” - and Ashworth have developed an especially strong blend at the mic.
Poor sound and rebuilding notwithstanding, the Rangers on July 22 tapped into some of the old magic on the gospel soul of “Be Still Moses;” Sharp’s harmony-rich and balladic “Birds of Ohio,” making its on-stage debut; Smith’s coal-miners’ lament “Call the Captain;” and their sublime take on “Sweet Baby James.”
SCR’s ongoing de- and reconstruction was best represented at the encore, which jettisoned the formerly ubiquitous “Auden’s Train” in favor of the Traveling Wilburys’ “The End of the Line.”
Everything will work out fine, they sang.

January 2023 Mangum Dental Hike-of-the-Month Fain Park, Prescott Valley, AZ
Distance: 1.0 miles - 2.5 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Elevation: 100 - 300 feet of elevation gain
Parking: Fain Park, 2200 N 5th St, Prescott Valley, AZ 86314, the park has a parking lot, restrooms, and no fee.
Directions: From Prescott head toward Prescott Valley on Highway 69.  Once in Prescott Valley turn right on N Prescott E Hwy and in 150 yards, turn left onto E 2nd Street.  After ¼ mile, turn right on N 5th Street.  The park is on the right.
Summary:
There is a lot to do at Fain Park in Prescott Valley, Arizona.  This 100-acre park is home to fishing, prospecting, picnic tables, grassy areas, mining museum memorabilia, and hiking trails.  There are multiple short trails that are simple to follow and easy to hike.  Most of the trails are south of Fain Lake and give an impressive view of the dam as well as an expansive view of the area.  The lake was created in 1927 when the dam was built.  Some of the fish caught in the lake include Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Largemouth Bass, Catfish, and Bluegill. There are signs of mining throughout the area and a close-up view of the Dam from the observation platform.
To get to the hiking trails, cross the floating bridge heading west from the lake.  Cross over Lynx Creek by walking over the bridge on the outskirts of the lake.  The trails are easy to follow and a blue sign at the entrance to the park has them labeled: Calvary Trail, Canyon Trail, and Lynx Creek Loop Trail. A City of Prescott Valley brochure online shows a slightly different configuration of trails and additional trails: Overlook Trail, Shoreline Trail, and  Chapel Trail. Even with conflicting information, it is almost impossible to get lost.  There are a number of metal trail signs and the lake is almost always in sight. This area is beautiful in the fall but also makes a nice winter hike because there is little shade from the summer heat. There are a couple of gates in the area and signs of cows on the east side of the park, but no cows were seen.  Get out and enjoy the area trails all year round.

Impianti sciistici in Georgia. Perché andare a sciare a Goderdzi, quindi? Perché andare a sciare a Goderdzi, quindi?

Critic Of Music
Vocal type: Bass. Positives: Robust, clear lower register that is projected well. Bass is achieved with great technique and support down to F#2. A highlight of the voice. Slightly brightening as he ascends, the middle register still maintains ease and displays a warm, masculine tone. Though he gains a slight (pushed) rasp above E4, his voice remains open, projecting well. Well-developed mixed voice, allowing him to access a clean, head-dominant C5 belt. A light, warm falsetto that Sho has no issues staying in for extended periods. This area possesses a soft vibrato and is reached with ease until around Eb5 when he needs more volume to phonate. Solid understanding of musical phrasing, being considerate to the music by changing vocal colors, texture and dynamics. Negatives: The upper extremes of the falsetto are unstable and undeveloped and the chest register thins as he ascends. Though he mixes at the extremes of his chest voice, the rest of the belting range could use a more even mix.

Time for today’s Rock Report, brought to you by Meriwether’s bistro! swing by for lunch, breakfast, brunch or dinner at Meriwether’s Bistro inside Hells Canyon Grand Hotel in Lewiston.
Metallica have announced that they will be celebrating their 40th anniversary by performing two Fan Club-only shows at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, on December 17 and 19 this year. "As hard as it is to believe, the band will be turning the big 4 - 0 this October. It's a wild thing to wrap our heads around… it feels like just yesterday that we were hitting the stage playing our first show at Radio City in Anaheim, California, in the spring of 1982," Metallica wrote on their website. The celebration will be spread over four days, starting December 16, with the band planning comedy shows, live music events, and Blackened Whiskey tastings. "We will have so much more to tell you about in the coming months, but for now, we hope that you'll open those calendars and make plans to come hang with us for one unforgettable long weekend in San Francisco," Metallica said.
Iggy Pop is set to narrate a documentary, titled Tutankhamun: The Last Exhibition, about Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamun. The documentary, produced by Nexo Digital and Italian cultural agency Laboratoriorosso, will chronicle the archaeological history of the king's tomb, from its discovery in 1922 to the wildly popular traveling Tutankhamun exhibition that opened in Los Angeles in 2019. The tour contained more than 150 artifacts from King Tut's grave. It was expected to run until 2023, but the pandemic cut the tour short. The Egyptian government has since declared that the artifacts will never leave the country again. Nexus Digital's Rosella Gioffré told Variety that they were looking for "somebody that could give a different appeal to the narration of the movie." "And we thought of [Pop] and he accepted," Gioffré added.Laboratoriorosso CEO and documentary producer Sandro Vannini added that "when we heard his voice for the first time we said this is the voice."This is what we need for this film. The voice of Iggy Pop is simply incredible," he said. "When he read the story what he was going to narrate he was immediately keen to work with us."
Former KISS bandmates Eric Singer and Bruce Kulick teamed up on a cover of Bryan Adams' chart-topping hit "Heaven."Singer is the lead vocalist on the rendition, while Kulick impresses with his guitar. The cover also features Todd Kerns on bass, Zach Throne as background vocalist, and Brent Fitz on both drums and keyboards. Kerns, Throne and Fitz are part of Kulick's band, which he calls the Vegas MOBB (Member's of Bruce's Band). The cover was recorded to raise funds for the David Z Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to music education and named after deceased Adrenaline Mob bassist David Zablidowsky. A black and white video was also released along with the cover that shows the group working together in the studio.
