The Morning Comes (Acoustic Version)
explanations below the cut…
okay, so this one is a lot more atmospheric and cinematic than...lots of other playlists i’ve done so i shall lead you through it like we’re going on an adventure, baby.
Til the Casket Drops - ZZ Ward
A house made out of glass will surely shatter, So we built a fortress of red bricks and ladders, The ground, it started shaking, The bombs are falling, We could've walked away, We had a warning,
You asked me how long I'd stay by your side, So I answered with only just one reply,
'Til the casket drops, 'Til my dying day, 'Til my heartbeat stops...
Okay, so...I lied. In terms of the “journey” this song doesn’t really fit to go first, but--it’s such a good mood setter and was the first song I decided on for this playlist actually. It has always been a helle song, but it’s never really Fit anywhere. But what is a better opener than a song about death and devotion in the middle of a war?
From the Wreckage Build a Home - The Wind and the Wave
We were racing down a road littered with crosses Right down to Jalama Beach and even though we missed the sunset We jumped over barbed wire and cacti Just to fall into the sea, skinny dippin' youngins, you and I We're built to last We're built to last Oh, we're built to last We're built to last Well now it's clear you're the wind and I'm the wave Oh together we can brave all the things we never knew So I'm making room on a boat I built for one We can sail into the sun, till our skin's as tough as diamonds...
The next three songs all have the vibes of running away. Of getting out of a desperation. Of being convinced to leave a situation for something better. Which is just such great imagery for thgau!helle. After all, last time, Belle had to convince Hades to join the Legion, to give him something new to fight for. “I’m making room on a boat I built for one” ugh...it’s just...the Vibes. This would be a great song for romance in District 4 but I’m stealing it.
Take Me There - Delta Rae
Baby, when you call my name It's like a warning There's danger in the things you say But I think I want it Every single move we make Feels like a chance to win So come on, baby, take me there...
THIS is the runaway song of my dreams. Less rebel/dystopian vibes. Though, it still has that vibe I’m going for with like...convincing your lover to run away with you. This one is just...probably the sexiest one? Ahaha. “There’s danger in the things you say / But I think I want it.” /grooves to this song. I’ve definitely posted this on Belle before and I will not apologize for reusing it.
Out of the Badlands - Delta Rae
Don't trust the teachers Don't trust the preachers That the world is round We'll find out for ourselves Once we break past the shell On the edge of this town I got some twenties and tens In a Maxwell House can With the lid on tight To get us over the hot sand Out of the badlands Into the night Oh, there's a billion little stars Oh, let's pick out which one is ours Oh, girl, I need you by my side...
And now we are on the road. This is a great rebel song. “Don’t trust the teachers--We’ll find out for ourselves.” Love this part because it’s like...dystopian government trying to control education and Belle was a teacher giving her students illegal books. Also, the way they sing “there’s a billiiiiiion litttttttllleeee staaaars” ugh it gets me every time.
There is also the like “oooh, ya oooh” which actually appears in a couple of songs. The vocalization I love because it’s like Emotional and also very folky, which is the vibe.
Would That I - Hozier
With the roar of the fire my heart rose to its feet Like the ashes of ash I saw rise in the heat Settle soft and as pure as snow I fell in love with the fire long ago With each love I cut loose I was never the same Watching still living roots be consumed by the flame I was fixed on your hand of gold Laying waste to my loving long ago
So in awe there I stood as you licked off the grain Though I've handled the wood, I still worship the flame Long as amber of ember glows All the "would that I loved" is long ago...
I was really torn between Work Song and Would That I for Hozier on this playlist. Both are EXTREMELY helle songs. And EXTREMELY dystopian love song vibes. However, I went with Would That I because of the wood/fire imagery. Both because of Hades, obvs, but also District Six being Lumber/Mining and where helle comes from.
It’s also something Hozier does so well which is like...love songs where both parties are active participants? If that makes sense? Like a lot of love songs is one person singing to another and that person...you don’t really know their response or their actions. But in this song--the fire and the wood are kind of two players on the same playing field. “So in awe there I stood as you licked off the grain” and “that the sound of the saw must be known by the tree” UGH. ugh.
Our heroes are now in Enchantra and ready to fight for their cause!
Thistle & Weeds - Mumford and Sons
Spare me your judgements and spare me your dreams Cause recently mine have been tearing my seams I sit alone in this winter clarity which clouds my mind Alone in the wind and the rain you left me It's getting dark darling, too dark to see And I'm on my knees, and your faith in shreds, it seems Corrupted by the simple sniff of riches blown I know you have felt much more love than you've shown And I'm on my knees and the water creeps to my chest But plant your hope with good seeds Don't cover yourself with thistle and weeds Rain down, rain down on me Look over your hills and be still The sky above us shoots to kill Rain down, rain down on me But I will hold on I will hold on hope...
This song pairs SO well with Would That I, in my opinion. It was actually the inspiration for the title of helle’s two paras from last time: Thistle and Weeds. In terms of narrative, this song is when they are battle worn. It’s been years. Nothing has happened.
The needle feels as if it has moved so insignificantly, but there is still hope...
Enemies - The Lone Bellow
Hear you singing in your sleep Song of the night bird calling me Spread its wings out like a flame Try my best to say your name Saw that bird up in that tree Where you carved out names so deep Feel the warmth inside it speak Try my best to hear you breathe We should've been enemies We should've been enemies Break the bones of something dead Feel it hold on to what is left Let the earth it's on give way Try to bury what we've made...
This is also one where all hope feels as if it is lost or slipping through your fingers. Where all the death and destruction starts to feel like...am I on the right side? Am I any worse than the enemy? But you always have the person you love pulling you back and reminding you what you’re fighting for.
Also, the first part there with “singing in your sleep” and “spread it’s wings out like a flame” and “carved out names so deep” -- more flame and wood imagery, hella.
Come Back Alive - Delta Rae
Call me back darlin' When you hear me call your name If I don't hear you I'll think somebody came If I can't find you I'll wait on down the hill And if you don't find me I'll think you been killed And if you don't find me I'll run on down the road...
Delta Rae is on here so much because they tend to handle subject matter that is like gritty and gothic and historical and very folky, in that folk for the revolution kind of way. This song is clearly about someone who is on the run, probably from a corrupt government -- honestly, it gives me big Jim Crow vibes (probably bc there are other songs that def reference that and Black Lives Matter.)
It is about worrying they’ll come home safe and what has happened to them. Which...if that’s not at least one part of your dystopian love story...well... It gives me big “The Hanging Tree” vibes.
Sons & Daughters - Allman Brown
And I, I'll wrap myself around your heart I'll be the walls of his heart And I, I'll keep a light on To call you back home And I'll build a fire, you fetch the water and I'll lay the table And in our hearts, we still pray for sons and daughters And all those evenings out in the garden, red, red wine These quiet hours turning to years And it's all to come for now we're still young Just building our kingdom but it's all to come...
And here we end on two songs that are a little more hopeful! We are not out of the woods yet, but the dawn is coming. We have waited years for this. There is a little house, with a family, and you are building your life up again.
The Morning Comes (Acoustic Version)
'Cause the devil's in the details and he's taking his toll Sending good men down the foot trails of some lost lonely souls So I'm working the graveyard, I don't sleep till it's light Ain't calling in favors, I can't swallow my pride And the bank's on a mission, they want to read me my rights But they ever show up around here, they're going to be in for a fight 'Cause the devil's in my hometown and I ain't telling him no 'Cause it's my family, it's my love now, that I'm scared to let go
Can I be blamed if I'm angry? Can I be saved if I'm barely clinging to hope? I'm clinging to hope When I say oh, oh Rain don't change the sun Jealous is the night when the morning comes But it always comes...
This is one of my favorite Delta Rae songs and it just fits so well here. It is such a melancholy song, but a hopeful one. “Rain don’t change the sun / jealous is the night when the morning comes.” The acoustic version especially plays at my heart strings and I just love it.
The way they sing “can you blame me if I’m angry / can I be saved if I’m barely clinging to hooooooOOOOooooope” always just puuuuulls at my heart. It is so beautiful and those questions are so important. Especially when you’ve won the war but there is still so much hurt and pain at the end.

It Is All an Illusion ❤️ [Sei]
In which Sebastian and Mei face off in the arena...
@sebastian-morey
[tw -- burns, burn injury, description of burns, death]
MEI: The cornucopia glinted bright and Mei smiled when she saw it. The sands beneath it were dyed with blood, but it looked more or less undisturbed otherwise. The bodies were gone and so was all the supplies. But no one had returned. Not until Mei stepped foot on it. She crossed over the water carefully, staying alert, but leaned against the cool metal, in the shade. This would be a good place to camp.
That was until she heard the crash of the wave and saw the waters around her swell, lapping up over the beach before they disappeared again. And with it—delivered a little gift.
Mei smirked. This was going to be good. She could play with her food before she murdered it.
“Seb!” A voice called that was not Mei’s own as she pulled an illusion from behind the cornucopia, right in the path of the man.
“Hey, Sixxer,” she purred as she held her battle axe to the pretty Victor’s throat.
“The Capitol sent me a gift.”
SEBASTIAN: Sebastian was soaking fucking wet - still hacking up water from his lungs and trying to get the previous events out of his head. He didn't want to think about them anymore. There were already too many experiences and too many horrors that plagued his mind.
They never said this would be easy - but no one ever talked about the psychological toll it would take on you either. Then again, he should have known. There was a glint in Gem's eyes that changed ever since he'd gone to the games. He'd been different. Changed and now he--
....was here?
Gaze snapped up quickly at the sound of his younger brother's voice, his footing even more unsteady as he sped up his uneven gait. "G-...Gemmy?" He called out uncertainly (maybe he'd started going nuts?) But then another voice - right as Sebastian's gaze finally found his brother.
Standing with a blade to his neck.
His heart clenched, and Sebastian felt his entire mouth run dry. This wasn't possible. Gem shouldn't be here. Not with the fucking Career! But... - He'd won his games in two days. He'd killed them all. Made for a boring show... Was--... was this his punishment? His hands burned hot - the flame beneath his skin itching to get out as he set his jaw.
"A gift? Are you out of your fuckin' mind? Let him go." He warned - hoping his tone carried more strength than he felt as his gaze slipped back to Gem.
MEI: Mei smirked.
Her heart was thrumming in her ears, but she knew that she could kill this boy from Six and then everyone would laud her for killing the Victor's brother. She'd be showered in gifts tomorrow morning, if she could only last the day after this. Maybe she'd even return to the Careers to share her spoils. If only to stay on their good side one more day.
The boy--Seb--was far enough away that he couldn't see Mei's hand tremble where it held the axe to his fake brother's throat.
"Mmm, no. I don't think so," Mei said with a shrug of her shoulders. She had to concentrate to keep the illusion up. But she made it struggle like a puppet on a string.
"Don't listen to her, Seb," pleaded the puppet.
SEBASTIAN: What do I do?
What do I do?!
For all the stupid advice, the tips, the help he'd received in all of this, he'd never been prepared to deal with this. With.. with his brother here as a pawn in some Career's fun little game. Hostage negotiation wasn't a part of the training stations.
Sebastian's breath came out as unsteadily as the shift in his weight, desperation painting across his brow as he shook his head lightly back at his brother. His hand shifted slightly - reaching towards the hilt of his sword as he took another half step forward. It wasn't much. He didn't want it to be. Seb didn't want to give this woman (she was crazy, he was sure) reason to put any more pressure against his brother's throat.
"...W-...What do you want." He said then, gaze quickly slipping between the two as his other hand raised in a careful calming gesture. "...Food? My weapons? What do you want? He's not a part of this. Killing him doesn't---" He couldn't stop the way his voice cracked around those words "---doesn't help you win. It doesn't help you!"
MEI: They've gotten to the begging. That was quick. Not that Mei was particularly surprised. The people from Six were always so weak willed. Even the brother had been a coward. Burned down the arena in such a short time. So boring. So cowardly. They had no backbones whatsoever. Even when they got hits in, they ran away. They never finished the job.
Mei would.
Just had to get him close enough.
"I think a life for a life makes sense, right, Gemmy?" she cooed at the Victor, who was from her own memory which meant shiny and pretty in the lights of the Capitol. She tried to muss his hair some, put some dirt on his high cheekbones but--it was hard to imagine such a thing while keeping him alive.
"Just let her kill me," said the apparition, struggling again. Mei let her axe knick the edge of his neck, a little trickle of blood sliding into his shirt.
SEBASTIAN: A life for a life.
Sebastian swallowed hard at the offer, his heart thumping so loud in his chest he was convinced it was going to break right through right now. End the problem here and now by just keeling over dead from the stress and fear of it all.
God, it wasn't fair.
"Gem! N-.. No!" He cried, letting himself jerk forward a bit more still as both hands raised now - gaze following that trail of blood that seeped into the worn fabric. "Stop. Stop." Sebastian pleaded lightly, another step forward - another glance towards his brother.
Think, Sebastian.
His hands stayed up for a moment as he caught his brother's gaze, though they made what looked like a small dismissive gesture as they dropped lower again in a means of surrender. Though in reality, he knew Gem would have caught the sign for go as his hands shifted. Would have known he was looking to make a move.
"Alright. Alright! A-..A life for ..for a life. I--.. Fine. J-...Just let him go. Please." Another step. Another small raise of his hands to show he was unarmed.
The flame still burning under his skin. Waiting.
He just had to get closer.
MEI: Mei shuffled forward as Sebastian did. She didn't think this would actually work. It meant she would have to be fast. Dart forward, slash him across the throat. She only had one shot. Her concentration couldn't be on two things at once. As soon as she moved, the illusion would disappear and the Sixxer would catch on.
Though, she could still probably best him.
One--Seb kicked up sand as he walked closer.
Two--Mei shifted onto one foot, twisting her grip on the axe.
Three--She shoved the illusion away and took a powerful, backhanded swing, right at the man's head with a battle cry.
SEBASTIAN: He didn't this would actually work - it just meant he needed to be fast.
Catch her off guard, push forward and hope he was as familiar with fire as he thought he was. He could pull Gem away while she was recovering and he knew his brother would know what to do once he had his bearings. All he had to do w——
It all happened too fast. Mei shoved Gem away - and he seemed to vanish in thin air, melting away into the background as it occurred to Sebastian that he hadn't been there at all. But there was no time to consider that. Not when the glint of the axe was swinging towards him.
Two more things happened at once:
One, his body jerked in reaction, dropping back and away from the swipe, even as he felt a sear of pain slice across his features. Not quite quick enough to avoid injury, but enough to avoid the fatal blow
— and two, he reacted without thought. Like a cornered animal.
Fire shot from his arms, scorching down his limbs and extending out towards Mei in a giant flame as his back hit the ground - water splashing up and sizzling against the bright flare before it faded out just as quickly, a smokey haze left behind as blood dripped into the shallow water beneath him from his brow.
MEI: Mei had been thinking about the future. This whole time, she had a plan in her mind.
It never seemed to work out the way she expected, but having that plan helped her. And, of course, the plan always ended with winning. With surviving. Getting back to her mom and dad and sisters. Becoming famous. Sponsoring a perfume bottle that smelt of rich, succulent plums.
The plan did not include this asshole shooting a wall of flame at her like a flamethrower. She screeched and dodged out of the way of the flame. Her heart beating faster. The heat of the flames scorched at her, burning the sand under her feet and turning it slippery as glass. It licked at her bare torso, turning it red and pink all over.
Her hand clutched at her side.
"How?" she panted, but she knew how.
Fey's.
Suddenly, she felt unsteady. She was not the only one being favored. Her confidence wavered but she raised her axe again and darted forward. She had always been fast. It had always been her strong suit. Raising it above her head, she moved quickly, bringing it down to try and slash at Seb's side. @Laurho
SEBASTIAN: He tried not to waste time, shoving himself back in the water as he felt the warmth flushing down against his face. It made him want to panic - but there wouldn't be time for that. Not if he wanted to live. Time to panic would come later. ...hopefully.
"...S-..same as you." He mumbled back - unsure why he'd even dignified her with a response. It very well could have been the last thing he ever said.
For a moment, it was like time stopped. Sebastian seemed to watch in slow motion as the woman adjusted her footing - the axe raising above her head. Poised and ready for the attack. Perhaps...it was because he was going to die. Maybe it...was a sign. He'd see it coming and think of all the ways he could stop it but it was inevitable...wasn't it?
But he had to fight. He promised he would try. It wasn't a death sentence - and he still had the best weapon in the game. Fey's alone was one thing... but there was something more important.
Experience.
His eyes squeezed tightly closed as his hands raised again - almost as if he were about to protect himself from the blow as his entire frame shifted sideways. A last ditch effort to dodge her axe as he felt the heat explode from around his skin. Hot flame erupted from his finger tips - shooting up like a hose towards his target and burning bright against the evening sun.
It didn't stop the scared cry that slipped from his lips as he tried to concentrate everything on simply lighting up as much as he could, his entire body bracing for that moment when the axe would break through his defenses and finally land.
MEI: For a moment, Mei felt nothing at all except the heat. It burst bright and intense all around her. Her vision was full of it. She was disoriented, blinded. It was as if the sun had exploded.
The searing pain came a moment later and she couldn't help the scream that ripped from her throat. And then another. The axe dropped uselessly from her hand as she raised her arms on instinct to try and shield her face from the burn of it.
It was too late though. The flames had already made quick work of her flesh, melting it like candle wax. Her long, black hair combusted into dust. All she could do was scream as the flames engulfed one side of her. They licked lovingly against her exposed torso, bubbling it like the tea on the stove that her sister always made at home. Her scream whistled like the tea pot.
She fell to her knees as the flames vanished, her whole body trembling from the shock. Her body pitched forward into the sand, the grains embedding in her liquid flesh. She groaned hoarsely, before managing, with the last bit of her adrenaline to push herself up onto her side and roll over onto her back.
SEBASTIAN: The screams were his first indication that whatever he'd done worked. The second was the lack of another blow to his body. Though honestly? Neither of them actually brought him that much comfort.
If anything the scream haunted him - made his eyes squeeze tighter as his fingers shook, curling gently into fists as the flames petered out. For a few moments? The sounds of pain - the smell of burning flesh, hair and god knows whatever else. It made bile rise in his throat as a shaky breath ripped from his lips like a sob.
It was over.
His eyes peeked open then, slowly, and Sebastian had to remind himself to swipe blood from his features - staining the back of his hand a bright red as his gaze finally landed on the Career's body. It was over.
But... no canon had sounded.
Sebastian swallowed thickly - almost afraid to move as he forced himself to look at her body. The... horrified mangle of skin and ---... Again, bile rose quickly before he swallowed it back down, pushing himself to his knees with a gasped breath. He needed to leave. She'd die or...be found by the Careers and helped with whatever stockpile. He just had to leave.
But he couldn't. Sebastian couldn't bring himself to - instead only crawling through the shallow water, fingers lodging in sand before he found himself beside her. God, how was she still fucking alive?
"M-....Mei?"
MEI: There was nothing but the pain. Her whole world had become it. Who was she? Nothing but another Capitol punishment. Another Capitol toy. Someone who would be forgotten tomorrow, when there was more blood to be spilt.
Her breath rasped, happening only on instinct. She stared up at the sky but one of her eyes wasn't working properly. It rolled in her head toward the sound of a voice. Her name. Her name was Mei and it meant "beautiful". Her fingers curled in the sand, but the pieces were cold and slipped through her fingers.
"Seb?" she rasped, trying to find his face through the blur of her vision. "It hurts," she whimpered.
SEBASTIAN: Oh god.
Oh god. Oh god what did he do? Guilt clenched in his heart as he shifted forward a bit more, hands swiping into the water to clean them frantically before he reached out - but he stopped just short of touching her.
How could he? He didn't want to hurt her anymore than he already had. Please. Sarina's voice in his head made him flinch. An eerie reminder of the girl's last wishes before he'd taken her life - and here again he was back in that situation. It'd been life or death! He hadn't had a choice but - ...it didn't feel real right now. It couldn't feel right when he was staring at Mei's mangled, scorned body laid in front of him. Blood dripped from his chin, landing upon the back of his palm once more as he bit down on a short sob.
"I--... I..I'm s-..I'm sorry." He found the will to say, swallowing back again as warmth pooled by his eyes. This time however it wasn't the warmth of his own blood. "I--...It'...it's..it's okay. It's..it's okay. I-.. You're okay." No she wasn't. No she wasn't, Sebastian. You did this.
Hesitantly - and as softly as Sebastian had ever managed to do something, the man's hand reached out - slipping his fingers gently into her own with a small squeeze. She was so... young. She was practically a child. "I-..you're..you're fine.."
MEI: Mei suddenly felt very cold. The heat had seeped out of her quickly. Every shiver sent another shot of pain through her. Her wild eye found the boy's dark ones. There was a bright red gash on his cheek. She remembered blood blooming on Dot's side. She remembered red seeping into Rose's pants. Hera's body thrashing under her.
"I'm sorry too," Mei said and a sob burst out of her mouth, causing her whole body to convulse once, her fingers squeezing at Seb's. The strength in her good hand surprisingly strong still. Her heart beat was fluttering fast in her chest.
Mei had had a plan but--there was so much pain, she couldn't remember it.
"I'm scared," she admitted. She had been scared this whole time. It almost felt like a relief to admit it to someone.
SEBASTIAN: Sebastian bit down roughly on his lip to stop himself from sobbing too - tasting the metallic twinge on his tongue as he gaze the girl's hand another squeeze. It felt in time with the squeeze in his chest, falling into the pit of dread he held in his stomach.
She...she was dying. No - not dying. She was suffering and it was his fault.
"Y-...You don't..you don't have to be scared." He managed, just barely - letting his opposite hand reach out towards her features. Though again, he hesitated - hovering above her skin before he shifted just enough to avoid the side of her face where the flesh had charred into something almost unrecognizable. His calloused thumb brushed softly against her skin - surprised almost by how soft it was. Never a victim of harsh conditions (at least...until now).
"I'm right here...Y-...You're not a-alone, okay? I--.. You don't have t'be scared. It's..it's okay." And for a moment - it almost felt like it could have been. Like if he just imagined, the stupid arena around them would disappear - and he'd be back home. With the comfort of his family, and she would be too. That it would be okay. For both of them.
MEI: Seb touched her skin and Mei closed her eyes. She thought of her mother, touching her cheek before pulling her hair back into a bun, getting her ready for her ballet lessons. She thought of her father, cuffing her on the chin, saying that's my girl whenever she brought home a trophy. She thought of her sisters and how they kissed her cheeks as soft as raindrops. And how she loved them and missed them and wanted to go home.
When she opened her eyes, the arena had dropped away. There was a soft pink light and she was in her bed at home. Seb was in the white wicker chair she used to curl up in to do her homework. It had been pulled close to the bed, so that he could still hold her hand. Around her, her mother and father smiled and her sisters held onto each other.
And as she looked at this lovely scene, more people joined in. First, the Victor--the brother--curling his hand around Seb's shoulder. Then others. People she didn't recognize. But they all smiled and Mei smiled too. The good side of her face curled up to expose those pretty teeth of hers.
"I'm not alone," she rasped, her breathing was coming more shallow, more sharp. "A-and neither are you."
Mei took another breath and then let it go. The grip on Seb's hand loosened. The illusion faded.
In the distance, a canon fired.
SEBASTIAN: The grip on Mei's hand got stronger, and he wished so desperately that he could do something. That he could take it all back. She was just a kid. She was a child, and he'd forced this pain upon her. The Capitol had forced this upon her. She didn't deserve it. None of them had. A sob broke through his lips, and he tried his best to stop it. But the emotion overcame him, even as he tried to swipe away his tears against his shoulder. His eyes closed against stained fabric - and when they opened?
He was sitting against Mei's bedside - his brothers and strangers alike lined up around them. A.. comforting little scene. A harsh but welcomed comparison to the blood soaked arena they'd left. A... a fitting place to die. Surrounded by family. Loved ones.
She wasn't alone. She wouldn't be alone.
Maybe then she...she could at least have that peace. Maybe then...she'd finally be at rest.
The pressure around his fingers faded - and with it, did the one against his shoulder, both leaving him with a similar clench in his gut.
When his gaze lifted once more, Sebastian found himself back in the arena. Mei's now lifeless corpse still beside him... but other than that...
He was once again alone.

“can't you see i'm sorry? / i will make it worth your while. / i'm made of dead man's money / you can see it in my smile. / oh, lazarus, how did your debts get paid? / oh, lazarus, were you so afraid? / when the fires have surrounded you / and the whole wide world's comin' after you / i’ve got blood on my name…”
Name: Thomas Harrington -- the Bloody Butcher Age: 26 District: Five -- livestock and agriculture Magic?: None Occupation: Victor of 282th Hunger Games; Legion Soldier Opinion on the Games: Member of the Legion. Hates what the Games did to him and wants to make someone pay for it. He doesn’t really care how it all ends up, as long as he gets to take a shot at the people who made him a monster.
Biography
tw: death, animal death, blood, gore
No one, really, in District Five was lucky, but Tom was more unlucky than most.
After all, he was reaped at only twelve years old. Everyone thought he was done for. So sad, they said. His father dead and two of his sisters aged out of the reaping, unable to put in tesserae for their family. The boy didn’t have a chance.
There were a few things they didn’t account for: that Tom loved his sisters more than anything and knew that his death most likely meant theirs too, that he had already been an apprentice at a butcher’s shoppe since he was ten, and that those with a lot to lose are more determined than any other Tribute in the arena. He won hearts easy during his interview, crying real, scared tears while he was on stage. The Capitol was endeared to the young boy--as they usually were to the young ones (though, they never bet on them.)
When he survived the Cornucopia, a few more people started to pay attention to him. The next night, when he stole an axe from a sleeping Career and split their skull before dashing off into the night, the sponsorships started pouring in.
Tom’s axe was an extension of his own arm: he knew just where to slice to hit an artery, knew just how to cut to kill someone fast or kill them slow. He hadn’t intended it--he was just trying to survive--but there was no denying he put on a show. Each of his kills where bloodier than the last and when he finally finished off the last Tribute and the Capitol came to pick him up from the arena, he was so drenched in it that it dripped from him onto the shiny chrome platform they made him stand on as they crowned his bloody curls.
He found out later that while he was in the Games, he had earned the nickname “the Bloody Butcher.” It wasn’t incorrect. Tom went home. Tom mentored. Tom did whatever the Capitol wanted of him, but he was a husk of his former self. He earned a reputation for having a temper and many in the District tend to leave him to himself.
Not much for talking, he works on his family’s farm, tending to the horses that sow the fields.

“loathe the way they light candles in rome / but love the sweet air of the votives / hurt and grieve but don't suffer alone / engage with the pain as a motive / today of all days, see / how the most dangerous thing is to love / how you will heal and you'll rise above...”
Name: Toulouse Henri Bonfamille Age: 26 District: Capitol Citizen Magic?: None Occupation: Former Gamemaker; Legion Doctor; Codename: [redacted] Opinion on the Games: It’s complicated. Toulouse benefited from great privilege for most of his life and never really thought much about the Districts. However, now he has seen first hand the cruelty of the Capitol: in the capture of his brother and the threat to little Opal’s life if she is ever put back in her district, he is more willing to entertain the idea of a new system of government.
Biography
In Toulouse’s opinion, he once had a perfect life. Apprenticing his father as a Gamemaker, he enjoyed stretching his creative mind to develop new ways to keep the Games fresh and interesting. He did not think much about the Games himself (he honestly couldn’t stomach the violence.) In a way, he was able to separate what he was doing from what he saw on the screens. If there was any conflict in him it was between following his father’s expectations and becoming a Gamemaker and following the career he studied in school: medicine. (He was not so interested in cosmetic surgeries, but even the Capitol needed doctors.)
He was popular, comfortable, and successful. Why should he question it?
And then, his brother betrayed him. Stealing his codes, he almost got himself and their entire family killed. The siblings managed to escape with their lives, but for months, Toulouse was furious with his brother for putting him in this position. Gone were the comforts of his life in the Capitol. He knew hunger for the first time and cold and heat--he had blisters!
Toulouse was offered refuge in Enchantra begrudgingly. There was no doubt that his intimate knowledge of how the Gamemakers worked was invaluable, but he refused to talk about it. At least, at first...
A few months after he and his family arrived, another group showed up and this one with a heavily pregnant woman accompanied by a man he only barely recognized as a former Victor--so dirty and disgusting they all were. Soon after, the woman gave birth and Enchantra realized that it had no well-trained doctors. Reluctantly, Toulouse helped the woman deliver her baby successfully.
After that, he found that he was charmed by the child. And it dawned on him after a few...impassioned conversations with her mother--that if she were living in the Districts, there was a strong possibility that she would be reaped to participate in the games.
The longer that Toulouse stays with the Legion, the more he realizes that while, perhaps, his life had been perfect, it had been a poor imitation of a real life. The illusion shattered, he was willing to be a more active member of the Capitol’s downfall, but--
When his brother was captured by the Capitol on a routine mission, Lou’s care for destroying the Games fell far behind his want to get his brother back. And while the rest of the Legion prioritizes ending the Games at all costs--no matter who that cost is--Toulouse cares only for getting his brother back and keeping the people he loves safe.
But when the people he loves’ ideas conflict with his own--will he bend or will they break?

Name: Gem Morey Age: 23 District: District Six -- Lumber and Mining; Legion Soldier Magic?: Pyrokinesis  Occupation: Victor Opinion on the Games: Firmly against. Gem hates the Capitol with every bone in his body.
Biography
tw death, burning (nondescript), peacekeeper brutality (mentioned/nondescript), drugs (nondescript)
Life in Six isn’t easy.
Gem Morey knows that more than most. From a young age, he was labeled by Peacekeepers as a troublemaker. Just because of his powers. They were so repressed, Gem terrified of using them, that sometimes the flames would explode out of him--hitting people near him, including Peacekeepers.
For most of his childhood, he was kept on a strict regiment of suppressants.
He supposes that’s the best thing about winning: Peacekeepers mostly leave him alone these days.
Well, that and the fact he can provide for his family. Most of his brothers are able to take their names out of the tesserae, though even a Victor’s winning won’t feed nine people. So, they do what they can to survive.
That was what Gem had done in the arena too: whatever he could to survive. To make it back to his family and his home. From the start he had a plan: get sponsors and convince them to send him a red Fey’s Gold.
The plan worked better than he expected and on the first night of the games, after the bloody Cornucopia, a little parachute with a package. Inside: a little red pill. Gem knew he had 24 hours now and he had to get to work.
His games were the fastest in living memory. Less than 48 hours.
Sometimes he hears the screams in his sleep still, but at least his family was safe now...
Or--so he thought.
When his brother was reaped, Gem felt the fear through his whole body. He wanted to volunteer. He wanted to do something, but there was nothing he could do. They wouldn’t even allow him to mentor his own brother. So, he had to say goodbye to him with everyone else.
Though, he’s told his brother to keep hope: the Legion has a plan and if he can just make it to the end...maybe he can make it out too.

Name: Theodore Barrie Age: 31 District: Capitol Citizen Magic?: Fae -- has telekinesis and a skunk tail Occupation: Socialite Opinion on the Games: Bring on the entertainment!
Biography
tw lack of regard for human life lmao
Theodore was born in the lap of luxury. His grandmother was a revolutionary stylist in her time and his father was a gamemaker, which meant that he was always invited to the best parties. Growing up, Theodore wanted for absolutely nothing: food, shelter, clothing were easily abundant. So was affection: in the form of lovers, devoted friends, and admiring fans.
The circles he runs in don’t question the deaths they see every year. To them it is any other reality television show that plays throughout the year in the Capitol. The fact that these are people with family rarely crosses Theodore’s mind, unless they have family back home--which makes them a more sympathetic tribute to cheer for.
He is looking forward to these games. After all, he’s got a lot of money riding on this game and the pay out will be totally worth it.

“we'll be the proud remainers / here till the morning breaks us / we run away from real life thoughts tonight... / when i watch the world burn all i think about is you...”
Name: Simba Bonfamille-Lyons Age: 29 District: Two – Power and Masonry Magic?: None Occupation: Victor of 297th Hunger Games; Legion Soldier; Refugee; Codename: Tango Opinion on the Games: Member of the Legion. Was recruited by Fox after his games and joined because he doesn’t want to live in a world where people are constantly fearing for the safety of those they love. Now, he fears for the safety of the one he loves most and will do anything to get him back, including take on the Capitol by himself if he has to.
Biography
tw: death, torture (nondescript), Finnick vibes (also nondescript)
Simba Bonfamille-Lyons, once known as Simba Lyons, once known as the darling of the Capitol.
A surprising Volunteer from Two, Simba stepped up not for a chance of glory, but to save his little cousin from being reaped. His volunteering caused controversy: some believed that he did it nobly, some believed he was lying for clout, but soon--all fell for his charm either way.
When he left the Games, Simba thought it would be done. He could go home and live peacefully with his mother and father.
That was not what happened. His Victory Tour ended with a very clear message from the Capitol: do what we say, or your family will suffer for it. Simba, filled with justified rage at the threats to his family, quickly turned his heart against the Capitol and the Games. Still, he did his duty. First, to protect his family. Then, to gain information from those in the Capitol that might be of use to the Legion.
However, the most important information would come from someone he did not loathe with every fiber of his being: Berlioz Bonfamille. Known son of a gamemaker and lesser known Legion member. The two were quickly entrenched in a secret love affair on both sides: the Legion would see it as compromising the mission and the Capitol would certainly not like to know their Victor’s heart was won by one person.
They got so close to their dreams, but at the last moment, the keycode that they had stolen from Berlioz’s brother didn’t work and the Capitol was set into a strict lockdown as they swept the city and the Districts for signs of rebellion. Simba, Berlioz, and Berlioz’s siblings, barely escaped the Capitol.
For years, they managed to make it to Enchantra, where they hid for several years. At first, it was bliss to be together--openly. They got married as quickly as possible and enjoyed their freedom. But soon, that freedom turned sour as another Hunger Games rose before them. Simba grew restless, going on more and more dangerous missions. Ber did his part, going on low risk supply runs.
Until a mission to District Six to supply winter clothing went awry and Berlioz was captured by the Capitol. It is certain they didn’t know who they had until they were back but now that won’t give him up.
For the last year, Simba has tortured himself, imagining what it is they are doing to his husband and pleading with the Legion to free him. The Legion has been reluctant: what is one Capitol citizen to bringing down the entire Capitol?
But to Simba: love is worth it. It is a hard thing to come by in Swynem, and for good reason--love gives the Capitol leverage over you. Still, love, above all, is worth it to Simba.
As both the Capitol and the Legion turn on him, what will Simba choose?

All you have is your fire And the place you need to reach Don't you ever tame your demons But always keep 'em on a leash
Name: Phillip Knightley Age: 28 District: One Occupation: Retired Career, still living off his parents’ Victor spoils Magic: None Opinion on the Games: Pro… in theory…
TW DEATH MENTION, BURNING MENTION
All the Knightley children trained as Careers in order to uphold the good nation of Swynem and live up to their parent’s legacy — both Hubert and Edelrgard had won their Games some years ago, back-to-back, and were quite the talk of the Capitol when they got together.
But none of the Knightley boys ever got Reaped. And they were never quick enough to volunteer. Year after year went by, and while they trained, none of them ever had to face the horrors of the Arena.
Except for Primrose.
Rosie got Reaped just two years ago — after all her older brothers had aged out. Everyone in District One wanted to give the Knightleys a chance for glory, considering they hadn’t  been able to in previous years. And she would’ve had a chance — she was deadly with an axe, just like her mother, and she was quick and cunning. But there was some bloody Tribute from Six who charmed his way into getting a devastating bit of Fey’s and he burned down the Arena without mercy.
Phillip watched his little sister burn to death on the screen.
Since then, he’s been wondering if it’s all worth it…

Vanellope Von Schweetz is wearing a full LED dress, with contacts that glow when the lights go down, accompanied by matching LED false lashes. From strappy heels up, the LEDs change color in time with the other District Two bombshell... but occasionally pixellated images appear from the lights; hearts, winky faces, and lightning bolts!
Sarina Go is fully decked out in LEDs also! With a saucy, yet minimal, black bodice; the focus of her outfit is the dancing lights around her! She has an edgy black lip, color changing LED lashes, and glowing green eyes (much more unique than the other guys).
Winston Deavor is more understated, upon request! (And I aim to please!) He has a mirrored suit jacket, to reflect the glow of the girls beside him! The soles of his shoes light up and change color when he takes a step, his false lashes are also lined with LEDs to make those pretty eyes pop! And last but not least, a neon strip lined bowtie to add that extra umph!
[Adding the animated versions & the video of Sarina’s dress under the cut for our strobe and flashing light sensitive viewers! ❤️⚡]

“i am not a fool entire / no, i know what is coming / you'll bury me beneath the trees i climbed / when i was a child / i know i shouldn't love you / but i do...”
Name: Daniel Darling Age: 18 District: Four -- fishing Magic?: Half-Ningyo Occupation: Boat Painter; Legion Soldier Opinion on the Games: Member of the Legion. Danny has seen what the Games have done to his family. He doesn’t think he has much to give, but he wants to help anyway.
Biography
Danny’s sister was reaped when he was just a kid. Only two years into his own name being put into the reaping. Honestly, he doesn’t remember much from his sister’s game. Probably, because he spent most of it hiding. What he remembers is the before and the after.
Before the Games, Jane was teaching him how to sail. Before the Games, Danny was going to go out on the boats with her and they were going to get food for their family and make money and live a good, honest life. They played pretend and they laughed together.
After the Games, Jane never laughed. After the Games, Jane scared Danny. Just a little bit. His sister was still alive, but it felt like the Capitol stole her anyway. The Capitol stole everything from Danny: his dad, his cousin, his sister, his cousin’s voice. He had an anger, burning in the pit of his stomach, even if he never let it out.
So, when he found out about the Legion, he joined up immediately. Of course he didn’t tell his sister, knowing that she would tell him to stop, that it was too dangerous. But it was his turn now. Jane had already saved their family.

“i don't wanna put the hurt on you / but you better believe me / when i tell you that i finally got the dirt on you, / you're busted...”
Name: Candace Gertrude Flynn Age: 19 District: Three – Technology and Transportation Magic?: None Occupation: Peacekeeper Opinion on the Games: Was mostly indifferent growing up. She was scared that she would be reaped, of course--but she also saw it as a necessary evil to keep order. However, now that her stepbrother has been reaped...well, maybe she feels a little differently.
Biography
Candace always kept her head down. You know, there were rumors that those who misbehaved were intentionally reaped. So, Candace believed from a young age that if she and her family just did everything they were supposed to do, nothing bad would happen to them.
That was why she was selected to be trained as a Peacekeeper and was even allowed to return to her district with her best friend once all was said and done. She’s had a pretty easy life since then. It would be easier if her little brothers would manage to stay out of trouble, but that has never been in their nature. And, yeah, maybe Candace has hacked their records before to wipe them partially clean--delete a misdemeanor here or there to make sure they never went over the limit...
Now, she wonders if her meddling caused her stepbrother to be reaped. After all--
Candace broke the rules and those who misbehaved are intentionally reaped...

“hey hey little razorblade / girl you're so so dangerous. / you say you wanna try and get away / and that's just so obvious...”
Name: Mei Qin Age: 19 District: One -- Luxury and Textiles Magic?: Sorceress -- specialty in love witchery, can see strings of fate Occupation: Performer/Career Trainee Opinion on the Games: Pro -- how else will she gain even more adoring fans?
Biography:
Mei’s story is just like any other Career’s. Well, sort of. She was born into a family of sorcerers. Powerful ones. They were doctors and healers in their district, her family taking care of Careers that got injured during training at the Academy. Mei grew up in those familiar halls and enrolled as soon as she was able. She had her magic, but she wasn’t interested in it--unlike the rest of her family.
To Mei, she wanted to go down in history. Wanted people to know her name. She wasn’t going to get famous being a stupid sorceress.
Instead, she grew her agility abilities, becoming extremely lithe and, after realizing that she enjoyed practicing to music, she started performing for the Peacekeepers and Capitol citizens that often came to the district to get fitted for this or that event.
She gained some notoriety from that, but it wasn’t enough for her.
Being reaped was a relief for the rising star, but will she be able to make it far enough to get the adoration she craves?
Strengths: Agility, Strength Weaknesses: Poor Survival Skills, Arrogant
Specialty:
Alright, Mei, she thought to herself as she bounced out of her seat and headed toward the doors: time to put on a show.
She took a breath and entered the room with her shoulders back and head held high. Performing in front of a crowd wasn’t any reason to be nervous. Not for Mei. She was used to it. (Then why was her heart beating so fast? She didn’t let herself think about it too much otherwise the nerves would eat her alive and she hadn’t even entered the arena yet.)
This was just another crowd. Another performance.
Mei walked into the studio, glancing around. How dull it all was. Steel grey and blacks. All of the equipment the same monochrome. She wished that she was able to don one of her beautiful costumes for this. It would make her that much more memorable, but she didn’t need it.
First, Mei quickly took off the clunky boots that she had already untied. Barefoot, she stepped up to the table, she grabbed two knives from the table, holding them in her hands. Then, she moved to the middle of the floor, where she smiled at the judges before taking her position. She raised a hand, the knife glinting in the light and put her other foot out behind her.
The judges watched, intrigued. After all, she was only going [first or second or third or fourth].
Counting in her head, Mei twisted around, drawing the knives close around her. They whistled sharply through the air as she moved in a series of complicated floor maneuvers, leaning and diving as if she was avoiding enemies: or dancing.
After tucking and rolling, she let one of the knives fly from her hand. It embedded in the thigh of one of the dummies. She smirked, but did not stop the routine she had been practicing. Moving back, away from the dummies, she ended on the corner of the mat farthest from them. Taking a deep breath, she started off at a run and then about half way across the mat, she jumped and effortlessly completed a free-hand cartwheel, letting the other knife loose as she rounded.
The sound of the knife embedding in the bullseye (just off center) synchronized with the silence of her feet landing on the mat.
There was a round of applause and Mei turned to blow a kiss to the judges before flouncing out of the studio.
And if she was shaking, just a little bit, no one had to know.

“no safe place child / we don't know why / come back my baby / come back alive...”
Name: Belle Rose Acheron Age: 28 District: Six – Lumber and Mining Magic?: None Occupation: Legion Leader of District Six; Codename: Granger Opinion on the Games: Legion Leader of District Six, so, you can safely say that Belle is highly against the games, the Capitol, and everything that they stand for. If she could take the Capitol apart with her bare hands, she would. Now that she is a mother, the fight to end the Games is much more real to her.
Biography
tw: death
Belle’s story is no different from most people’s in District Six, except for the parts that are.
What isn’t are things like–her mother getting reaped when Belle was just five years old. Charisse was twenty-five, the last possible year that her name would be entered into the reaping. She died, because of course she did, malnourished and without a mean bone in her body, she hadn’t stood a chance. Belle’s father fell into a deep depression after the death of his wife and left Belle to her own devices. Which lead her to discovering the large, secret library of illicit and illegal books that her mother’s family had passed down from generation to generation.
Belle read them all. Once, then twice, then she began to distribute them to other people in the district. She took a job as a teacher, knowing that she could teach the children more than how to read and write and do math. She could teach them, with her books, how the world should be. She could handcraft an army of young children, who were pissed off with the status of the world that they lived in, keeping the flame of hope of rebellion alive through the unrest.
She was tagged early on as a troublemaker and had several run-ins with peacekeepers, losing a few of her precious books in the process. Thankfully, illegal books mean your name just one more time in the reaping, and maybe a lash or two if the peacekeepers are bored.
Slowly, she climbed the ranks of Legion, which accumulated when she accepted the offer of a position tutoring the mayor’s son, who was homeschooled due to a terrible case of black lung. Three times a week, she ventured to the mayor’s house and taught his son, and three times a week, she was able to send and receive communications through the computers within the house. This access soon gave her the rank of a Legion Leader.
Eventually, she took one too many risks: being secretly married to one of the only Victors of Six--and one who refused to be a Mentor--meant walking a tight rope of chance. And when Belle got pregnant, well, her mouthing off to Peacekeepers got a little more complicated.
After a nasty run-in with Peacekeepers during the 300th Hunger Games, the Acherons fled Six for refuge in Two with Fox. It was only a few days later that the Capitol descended upon them, their plan to overturn the Games having failed. They only just managed to escape with their lives. For a long time, they lived off the land, trying to regroup with the scant amount of people who had fled with them. Eventually, just before Belle was due to give birth, they managed to make it to the fabled Enchantra.
From this safe haven, Belle has been able to regain her status as Leader, though there are those in the Legion in Six who thinks she should step aside and let someone else take over. But Belle has more stake in destroying the Capitol than many of the others: her daughter. Belle won’t rest until the Games are nothing more than a bad memory, a story told to children to keep them from making the same mistakes...

Name: Howl Pendragon Age: 28 District: Capitol, darling Occupation: Former District 2 Escort turned Announcer!  Magic: None for this AU Opinion on the Games: Pro!!!
From this month’s issue of Capitol Couture…
Meet Howl Pendragon… the newest announcer for the Swynem Hunger Games!
When Pip Flickerman retired, the Gamemakers knew there was only one choice for announcer: Howl Pendragon. The former District Two escort is no stranger to the games, but he really caught the attention of the Capitol with his Hot Brad Mourning Party during the 300th Hunger Games.
“I’m so honored to step into this role,” says Pendragon, 28, as he shows me around his illustrious penthouse apartment. “Really, Pip left such big shoes to fill, but I hope I can do his legacy justice, while carving out my own niche.”
In his free time, Pendragon enjoys shopping and throwing lavish parties. Surprisingly amidst the glitz, glamor, and orgies, he also spends a lot of time with his family.
“My daughter is incredibly excited for the Tribute Parade,” Pendragon tells us. “She loves watching it every year. And well, my partner is very involved with the behind-the-scenes aspects. It’s a busy time of year for us, but also the most thrilling!”
Catch the 303rd Hunger Games this August on the Capitol Broadcast Network!
