The World’s Rarest Turtle Has a Shot at Escaping Extinction In 2019, the world’s rarest turtle suffered a staggering loss. The last known female of the species, Swinhoe’s softshell turtle, died after an artificial insemination procedure at the Chinese zoo where she and her mate lived. This left the confirmed tally for the species at just two individuals: the male in China, plus one individual of unknown sex in a lake in Vietnam. There may still be hope for the species. Conservationists and veterinarians recently announced that the Vietnamese turtle is a female. At the same time, exhaustive hunts for other surviving Swinhoe’s softshell turtles in Vietnam have verified at least two other promising leads. “This is very big news in Vietnam,” said Hoang Bich Thuy, the country director for the Wildlife Conservation Society. “Even people who don’t work in conservation, my friends and family, saw it on national TV and were like, ‘Oh! There’s new hope!’” Swinhoe’s softshell turtles, which can weigh more than 370 pounds, be more than 6-feet long and live for over 100 years, hold a special cultural significance in Vietnam, where they are known as Hoan Kiem — “returned sword” — turtles. In the 15th century, a well-known folk tale goes, Vietnam’s king, Le Loi, used a magical sword to defeat the Ming dynasty army. When the battle was over, the king gave the sword to a turtle god in Hoan Kiem lake in central Hanoi. In recent decades as Vietnam urbanized, one Hoan Kiem turtle continued to live in the lake, despite high levels of pollution. But in 2016, this last individual — a revered male known as Great-Grandfather Turtle — died, likely of natural causes. The sacred status of the Swinhoe’s softshell turtles living in Hoan Kiem lake did not extend to members of the same species living elsewhere in Vietnam, however. The species was heavily hunted for food and hammered by habitat destruction. In 2003, Tim McCormack, director of the Asian Turtle Program, began surveying rivers where the species historically lived. He turned up a few shells in peoples’ homes, and most fishermen told him that the once-bountiful animal had disappeared. Searches in China, where the species is commonly known as the Yangtze giant softshell turtle, were also discouraging. Mr. McCormack and his colleagues finally caught a break in 2007 when a team member managed to get a photo of a Swinhoe’s softshell turtle discovered in Dong Mo lake, in an area west of Hanoi. They hired fishermen to keep an eye on the turtle and continued work on habitat improvement, community awareness and further surveys to find additional Swinhoe’s softshell turtles. In 2014, they used genetic tools to confirm the turtle was a member of the species. In receiving this news of a probable second animal in Vietnam, “it’s hard to describe my overwhelmed feelings,” said Nguyen Tai Thang, project manager for the Swinhoe’s softshell turtle at the Asian Turtle Program. “It was like going on an endless expedition, and at some point, you wonder whether you are on the right track, and then you finally see a sign showing that just ahead, you’ll soon reach your destination.” There have also been sightings of another giant turtle that lives in the same lake as the female Swinhoe’s softshell turtle. There have been no signs of reproduction, however, which could mean that the other turtle is also a female. On the other hand, it could also be that the animal is an exotic species that found its way into the lake. Although the identities of the Xuan Khanh and the second Dong Mo turtles need to be confirmed, the hope of a second or even third Swinhoe’s softshell turtle is driving political and scientific interest. In 2019, the Vietnamese government released a turtle conservation action plan, developed with the Asian Turtle Program. Authorities in Hanoi announced an additional plan to protect members of the species found anywhere within the city’s jurisdiction — not just in Hoan Kiem lake. “The confirmation of the female Hoan Kiem turtle brought us a new hope to restore the population of this most precious and endangered turtle species,” said Nguyen Huy Dang, deputy director of Hanoi’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Last October, government officials, conservationists and fishermen trapped the Swinhoe’s softshell turtle that was first discovered in 2007 and used ultrasound to verify that she is a female. The next step, Mr. McCormack said, is to capture the other two individuals to identify them and determine their sex. This will likely happen in the spring, when water levels are lower and the reptiles become more active. If they find a male, the plan is to unite him with the female, likely in a semi-wild enclosure on Dong Mo lake. Discussions are also underway about mating the Vietnamese female with the Chinese male, said Gerald Kuchling, a project leader for the Turtle Survival Alliance who helped with efforts to breed the species in China. Scientists previously learned that the Chinese male’s penis is heavily damaged, however, preventing him from being able to successfully deliver semen into a female. This means there is little point in bringing the two animals together — something that would be challenging, anyway, for political reasons, according to Dr. Kuchling. Instead, he said, semen could be collected from the male in China and transported to Vietnam for artificial insemination. “Even if a male becomes available in Vietnam, involving the Chinese male through an artificial approach will still be significant to broaden the gene pool for the long term genetic health and survival of the species,” Dr. Kuchling said. “If no other male can be found, however, this approach will be the last chance, and imperative.” From their surveys across northern Vietnam, Mr. McCormack, Mr. Nguyen and their colleagues have identified a handful of additional places that they believe other Swinhoe’s softshell turtles could still be living. “I was born in a small village next to the Red River where there used to be many individuals of this species,” Mr. Nguyen said. “My friends and I used to gather at the village temple to hear stories related to the species, told to us by elders.” Finding more animals in the wild will ensure not only conservation of the species, he said, but that “the legend lives on.” Source link #Escaping #extinction #Rarest #shot #turtle #worlds

The last known female Swinhoe’s softshell turtle—the most endangered turtle species in the world—died in April 2019, leaving the last known male without a mate and the species headed for extinction, reports Harry Baker for Live Science. In a positive turn of events, researchers discovered a wild female in Dong Mo Lake in Vietnam last October, offering a glimmer of hope for saving the species.

Swinhoe’s softshell turtles, also known as the Hoan Kiem turtle or Yangtze giant softshell turtle, were pushed to the brink of extinction by habitat destruction and by hunters who sought the turtles’ meat and eggs. As a result, the government legally protected the species in 2013, reports the Guardian‘s Damian Carrington.

While monitoring the lake, the team of conservationists managed to capture the nearly 190-pound giant, examine her, collecte blood samples and insert a microchip. To their relief, she was in great shape, and they later released her back into the lake that day, according to a press release.

“In a year full of bad news and sadness across the globe, the discovery of this female can offer all some hope that this species will be given another chance to survive,” Hoang Bich Thuy, the country director for the Wildlife Conservation Society Vietnam, says in the press release.

The team spent weeks monitoring the lake, hoping to find a Swinhoe’s softshell turtle—and their efforts paid off. Not only did they discover and capture the female, but they also spotted a second, larger turtle in the same lake, which they believe is a male. Plus, they suspect a third turtle may lurk in the nearby Xuan Khanh lake, reports the Guardian.

“Once we know the sex of the animals in Vietnam, we can make a clear plan on the next steps, hopefully we have a male [and a] female, in which case breeding and recovery of the species becomes a real possibility,” Timothy McCormack, the program director of the Asian Turtle Program of Indo-Myanmar Conservation, says in the press release.

There had been previous efforts to breed the last remaining male, who lives at the Suzhou Zoo in China, with the last female. They had been together since 2008 but never produced offspring naturally, so conservationists attempted to artificially inseminate the female in 2019. Both turtles were deemed healthy for the procedure, but the female died of complications, bringing breeding efforts to a screeching halt, the Indo-Asian News Service reports.

“This is the best news of the year, and quite possibly the last decade, for global turtle conservation,” Andrew Walde, the chief operating officer of the Turtle Survival Alliance, says in the press release. “As the most endangered turtle on Earth, a tremendous amount of energy and resources have been dedicated to the preservation of Swinhoe’s softshell turtle. Following the loss of the only known female at the time in 2019, the confirmation of this wild specimen as female is a cause for celebration for all those who have worked tirelessly to see this turtle species survive.”

15 days in Vietnam – Where to go

What is your travel plan in Vietnam? Is it a long journey from North to South to explore the charm of nature, cultures, histories, as well as the life of Vietnamese people?

Vietnam has more than 3000 km of coastline, tropical lowlands, hills, and densely forested. Therefore, this S-shaped country has a wide range of choices for you. You can pick whatever you one, no matter what your travel interests, physical conditions and budget are. We hope that, with suggestions below, you will have a chance to discover the spectacular beauty of Vietnam, from the Mekong Delta, to famous cities such as Da Lat, Nha Trang, Hue, and Hanoi.

Throughout your trip 15 days in Vietnam, we highly recommend you spend a night in each city to chillax and experience the way of living in each region. Please do not forget checking the visa requirement based on your nationality and travel duration to ensure you have a smooth trip.

The first four days: Hanoi – Ninh Binh – Thanh Hoa – Vinh

Coming to Hanoi, you should stroll around iconic attractions such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Ngoc Son Temple, One Pillar Pagoda, Thang Long Imperial Citadel, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ho Chi Minh Stilt House, and Hanoi Old Quarter. Besides, the true essence of Hanoi is reflected well in its cuisines. Try to taste the signature food as Pho (noodle soup with beef), West Lake Shrimp cake, Ngu Xa Spring rolls, La Vong Grilled fish, Thanh Tri stuffed pancake.

After the Hanoi trip, you can visit some popular destinations in Ninh Binh, including Tam Coc – Bich Dong wish sheer mountains on paddy fields, Bai Dinh Temple – a complex of Buddhist temples holding many records of Asia, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital – the place for the King, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex – An UNESCO Heritage. This place is also known for its signature cuisines (e.g. underdone goat, Yen Mac pork, Tube wine of Nho Quan, and Lai Thanh).

Coming up next is Thanh Hoa – Vinh, the home to talented people, famous delicacy – Nem Chua (Vietnamese fermented pork roll), and many magnificent beaches, including Sam Son and Hai Hoa. Besides enjoying signature dishes such as Eel Rice gruel, sesame rice crackers, and oranges, there are some lovely spots in Vinh city recommended for you: Lam River, Phao Bridge, Ben Thuy Bridge.

Day 5 – 7: Quang Binh – Hue – Da Nang

People remember Hue for its ancient capital with golden palaces, classical temples, grave tombs, old places of worship, a complex of folk Imperial City and mausoleum’s architecture. Yet they are just one of many reasons to visit this lovely, peaceful city.

From Hue, you will have a 4 hour drive to Dong Hoi city (Quang Binh province). Here it has sun-drenched beaches stretching for over 10km, many historical sites such as Tam Toa Church, Nhat Le beach, Quang Binh Quan, Dong Hoi Citadel. What you should not miss is Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park and the world’s largest natural cave – Son Doong.

Following the day trip in Quang Binh, Da Nang is the next destination.

Day 8 – 10: Da Nang – Quang Ngai – Quy Nhon

Let’s go to beach cities where Quy Nhon and Da Nang are the most outstanding ones.

Quy Nhon, Binh Dinh

Nominated as the most peaceful city in Vietnam, Da Nang has long been famous for its beauty spots, friendly people. Coming to Da Nang, you will admire the majestic Han River view, Thuan Phuoc, Rong, Tran Thi Ly Bridge, white sandy beaches as well as experience the heaven for foodies.

Located in the South Central Coast area, Quang Ngai province is an ideal destination for couples and families with wild landscapes that make you feel like you are immersed in romantic nature.

Beaches with pristine waters, long white sandy patches, cliffs… all these are tourist attractions in Quy Nhon. Traveling to Quy Nhon city, you should visit places like Twin Cham Tower – one of the artistic Old Cham people heritages, Thi Nai Bridge – the longest cross-sea bridge of Quy Nhon, and Phuong Mai Peninsula.

Day 10 – 15: Tuy Hoa – Nha Trang – Phan Rang – Phan Thiet – Vung Tau – Sai Gon

All of the above destinations are popular beach cities, so you can easily find accommodation, and explore a beautiful spot in each one. Besides, it is strongly recommended to eat delectable local food.

Stopping at Vung Tau, you should not miss the chance to sea-bath at Front and Back Beaches, visit Lady Buddha Statue and White Palace.

In Phan Thiet, take a visit to famous attractions such as Duc Thanh school, Van Thuy Tu Temple, Bai Rang beach, Lagi Town… Furthermore, while being in Nha Trang, come to Dam Market, Museum of Oceanography, Bao Dai Villa. In Tuy Hoa (Phu Yen province), you should pop by Thap Nhan (Cham brick Tower), Phu Yen War Memorial, Chop Chai Mountain.

Traveling to Phan Rang (Ninh Thuan province), do not miss exploring Cham cultural beauty through famous sights such as Poklong Garai Tower, Bau Truc Pottery Village, My Nghiep brocade weaving village, Ba Moi garden, and Vinh Hy Bay.

The distance between either Vung Tau and Phan Tiet or Phan Thiet and Nha Trang has a panoramic view of the white sanded, crystal clear oceans.
