I think the whole “Toriel is like a mother to sans” is people not understanding that Toriel being motherly to Frisk doesn’t make her default state mother mode. I think most people would probably act like a parent or older sibling if they found a child that needed help. You can’t just go up to a kid and sat “you’re going to die if you leave this tiny area and you can’t go home ever”

for the record, i frankly do not give a single shit about how toby as the creator of the undertale feels about how people treat his protagonists. he made a piece of art and he set it free, he's a smart enough guy to know not to shove his nose in fandom discussions more than is necessary to continue his stories. i don't care if it wouldn't be a big deal to him that people gender his main characters, my perspective is that of a transgender fan interacting with other fans in a social space. if you're so painfully cis brained that you can't handle leaving a neutral character as is because you have to forcefully shove them in a binary somehow, that tells me you do not have the maturity to interact with people like me. even if you did, you couldn't pay me to run the risk of finding out when i can hang out with people who are obviously more reliable and trustworthy than you.

i don't respect you and i don't want you around me. i'm not entitled to your headcanons? sure. you don't see me going around attacking fans who misgender the humans. i go out of my way to avoid them and make my opinions known on my own goddamn blog. YOU are not entitled to my views either. not my headcanons, not my interpretations, not my analysis, not my judgement of your character based on this behavior. i find your arguments insufferable and immature, and would rather tap dance barefooted on coals than continue this discussion.

So in a way, is there a difference between headcanoning frisk/chara as girls or boys and headcanoning them as trans/nonbinary if it's all headcanon in the end anyway and everyone is equally wrong?

yes there's a difference because arbitrarily deciding that canon established neutrality is something that you get to override and is automatically more "debatable" than a character being established as male or female is a very obvious double standard.

interpreting them as nonbinary is only a way to translate their neutrality while assuming that the rest of their race thinks of gender as we do in real life. it doesn't change anything about how the character is referred to. rather, it preserves it. headcanoning them as a boy or a girl throws aside their neutrality entirely as irrelevant and "arbitrary". for what. YOUR discomfort?

while i might not think the characters in the text itself are trans, this attitude REALLY speaks to people's ignorance and weirdness around trans people in real life. because outside the game, real gender neutral people exist and they ARE, of course, transgender. someone who has gender neutral and nonbinary friends and is normal about it is not going to scramble to immediately fit any neutral characters back into the gender binary like a fucking 5 year old. because for someone who isn't transphobic, neutrality is just another way for human beings to exist.

anyway how many gendered characters are there out there? how many textually neutral ones, to compare? go play with another one of your billions of toys, if not retconning an entire character is sow hawd fow u

Out of curiosity what instantly ruins a soriel fic for you? I promise this isn't for my own fic 😁

Sans remembering resets. Not even a Soriel specific thing, I catch one whiff of it in any UT fic and it immediately kills any interest I might have had in it. Same with Sans being suicidal (he is not. lmfao)

But let's see, Soriel specific... hm. It's hard to explain what it is that they do wrong specifically. But there's a brand of h/c fics with sans being the comforted where you can tell the author has not taken into account everything that is also wrong with Toriel. She's just there to offer comfort, which I'd argue is something Sans would do more often with how evasive and private he is about his own issues (and how we have literal in canon examples of him comforting her instead, even before they officially met each other)

#not saying that toriel can never comfort him in turn it's just. the way a lot of ppl write it doesn't sit right with me #he's not cryptic enough. too open too outwardly emotional. toriel too motherly #like even when he's allowing himself to be vulnerable around other ppl he should always maintain 1) a leg over the conversation at all time #and 2) a way to weasel back to a safer topic and drop everything if he wants out #anyway toriel wouldn't coddle him as a way to offer comfort. she'd get on his level. she'd relate. she'd joke and then sit with that grief #side by side with her own in silence. fuck now i want to write more soriel again. ughhhhh #answered asks #biscia hater moment

you know, i try to stay positive about how this fandom views non-binary people because i know we've done giant leaps since 2015 but god like. you'll see drawings of older frisk and chara in skirts and dresses and wearing makeup and low cut shirts that show off bra straps and big doe eyes and STILL use they/them which is good!!!! it's very good!

but i draw frisk with the slightest hint of stubble once and not even a minute after i post it they're getting misgendered in the notes. by people who were using gn pronouns a moment before. and I'm like wow. you really DO see us all as women-light don't you

I do wonder how many people who consider soriel problematic don't see frans as problematic (which it's arguably even more problematic given Frisk's approximate age). Like, I personally do consider age gaps icky at times, but in the end soriel is between adults so it's none of my business, there's nothing morally wrong with it. But, like I really would love to hear what that kind of age gap haters has to say about frans

not many anymore i guess. that idea (sans and frisk are both 18ish) was very widespread early in the fandom, but it's gotten debunked pretty clearly multiple times and eventually like. either faded into obscurity, or morphed into "i aged them up". people know that frisk is a child. if they still ship it (and don't age frisk up either) it's because they frankly don't care about the problematic aspect of it. I've found it's kind of inescapable with japanese fanartists. at least all the "big ones" i know. ya just gotta arm yourself with the best blacklist you can and hope the filters don't shit themselves

but anyway, to go back to your questions, people who deem soriel problematic nowadays either like some other sans ship (like him and grillby. or him and napstablook????? apparently). they don't think he's frisk aged, more early 20s, so they do say he has a "mother and son relationship" with tori, and thus a "big brother relationship" with frisk. better make sure your found family follows the nuclear structure!!!

i feel like uty improves on things undertale did but it doesnt have the same strong foundation as the original. like all the qol tweaks and secret shit and meta flowey are all super impressive but as a whole i agree i didnt find it cohesive or consistent

eh, sorry but i don't really think UTY "improves" much of... anything from Undertale? you can make an argument for the visuals, which are more detailed and certainly better animated, but i would argue right back that undertale's rougher, retro, "kinda ugly" graphics are a deliberate design choice on Toby's part that he stuck to for a reason. not to mention, even in their ugliness, the original main cast managed to display more variety in shape language and size than the entire UTY one, which seemed unable to break past the "tall, skinny, anime proportioned humanoid" figure for anyone beyond the occasional side NPC (which, credit where it is due, DID have some really creative designs).

the secret shit is part of my critiques, actually! while conceptually cool, i don't think they appropriately distributed their story and lore at all. i feel like if we got to the end of the pacifist run and were wholly confused as to why dalv was even a character in the story, the whole "human attack" backstory was... not delivered properly. now, there's no problem with having secret lore, gaster is right there. but if you DO have it then it shouldn't be... yknow... tied to the main backstory conflict that literally set the story in motion? lol? it felt like a game with dataminers in mind, rather than players. which was unavoidably detrimental to its storytelling.

the bullet patterns and attack designs were very visually creative but what they improved from the original in their cleverness they tanked with their execution. WAYYY too unfair, counting too much on memorization and giving you no time to accustom yourself to the mechanics (shout-out to the gun tutorial that... didn't teach us how to shoot. at all. we figured it out on our own in the axis fight LMFAO)

the meta flowey stuff was a fun idea that only really delivered in the neutral run and didn't amount to enough anywhere else to justify his presence in the game imo. like, i lost my shit during his fight too, don't get me wrong, i like when fan stories let him be a little FREAK. but everything else was just so... wasted? i almost didn't see the neutral ending at all because the way pacifist handled flowey disappointed me so much.

uhhhhh running was a good addition and the music fucked hard. can't say anything against those two, nossir. not sure it'd go so far as to call them improvements tho, just nice touches
