Ren and Spacey: Techrules Ren Supercar Looks Ready for Intergalactic Travel

At last year’s Geneva auto show, Beijing-based startup Techrules displayed its AT96 supercar, a poorly constructed piece that was hard to take seriously—not least because it had motors that weren’t connected to anything. This year, the company considerably upped its game with this Giugiaro-designed Ren supercar, which is not only built better but, the maker claims, is an actual runner.

With its triple-bubble canopy over a three-seat interior, the Ren looks—if anything—even more fanciful than the AT96. But don’t underestimate the polish that a design house like Giugiaro can provide.

The Ren mesmerized onlookers as its Jetsons-style canopy powered open and the side panels of the dash rose up like wings to facilitate ingress to the central driver’s seat. That seat is upholstered with a brown microsuede upper section and a denim lower section, while the flanking passenger seats have brown leather over denim. It has a TFT instrument cluster, a second TFT screen in the center of the squared-off steering wheel, and additional screens on the sides of the canopy that replace sideview mirrors. The body’s dark central section is transparent polycarbonite through which one can see the horizontally mounted front damper units. The headlights are LED lasers; at the rear, there are a huge illuminated central blade, hydraulically actuated wings, and of course the LED-illuminated turbines.

Yes, turbines. Techrules characterizes the powertrain as a Turbine-Recharging Electric Vehicle. It’s a series hybrid with a diesel-fueled single- or twin-turbine range-extender engine that charges the lithium-ion battery pack, which in turn powers a maximum of six axial-flux, liquid-cooled electric motors. The battery pack—to be offered in 14-, 25-, and 32-kWh strengths—also can be charged from the grid. With two motors (making 429 hp), the Ren is rear-wheel drive; a four-motor version (858 hp) is all-wheel drive; and the six-motor configuration would have two powering the front wheels and four driving the rear and would make a total of 1287 horsepower. The chassis is a carbon-fiber tub with an aluminum rear bulkhead, built by L.M. Gianetti of Italy. The brakes are carbon-ceramic discs grabbed by six-piston calipers.

Techrules says it has tested the Ren successfully at Monza. No hypercar can be complete without performance claims, and Techrules claims a 2.5-second time for zero to 62 mph and a top speed of 199 mph.

Shangri La brings a new setting to life throughout these pages. • Revenants, are the augmented warriors tasked with secretive objectives throughout the city. • The Cult of the Undying, are the eyes and ears of a Stitcher community. They rule Shangri La with guile and subterfuge from behind the scenes. • Gente Del Mar are a water-borne tribe, who have maintained large family fleets for generations. They exist in a nebulous state, that lays south and west of Shangri La, in the Big Wet ocean. • The Fung are the warriors of the Stitchers in the area, and are used for a variety of body snatching missions, as well as helping to keep the locals in line. • The ARHK maintains a foothold in the area, to the north of Shangri La. Lake Is Bella is a shanty town which stands in the shadows of an old dam. Here, political refugees mix with petty criminals, all trying to make a go at life on the Washed Coast outside of the reach of the Shangri La Council.
