I was writing earlier today on Marxism, the tasks of the working class, and what is required to prepare for the challenges ahead, and I was struck by the overwhelming optimism for the future that suffuses it. Marxists do not despair or retreat, but rejoice in the decay of the old organizations--the bourgeois parties, the bourgeois state, the trade unions. In its weakness, evident in the brutality and terror employed by the ruling class, we work to educate and politically prepare the working class to break with the bourgeois order and revolutionize social relations, eradicate material and cultural poverty through the democratic control of the means of production and the building of a socialist culture. There is nothing more ambitious, and no need more pressing for the future. It will wake you up in the morning.

When compared with so much of what calls itself "left" today--which is by and large wretched, dishonest, cynical, obsessed with sex and race, and above of all, willing to compromise with the ruling class on virtually every question affecting the working class in order to maintain its own threadbare institutional interests--when compared with this, coming across a genuine Marxist perspective is like opening a window in a sick-room. That's how it felt to read this work for the first time, which in particular is extremely important for understanding the historical and political possibilities that confront us.
