THAT Domino’s Ad

For those who are not aware, there’s been a bit of controversy on a recent Domino’s UK ad. Nope, not to do with the fact that everybody in the ad is a POC, but it all had to do with one line: “Anything but Chinese”.

I’ve had some mixed feelings about the ad and I wanted to wait a few days before I could put my thoughts into words.

First of all, I agree that everybody is entitled to express their opinion (especially on food). The woman in the ad doesn’t want Chinese food. Maybe she had it a lot recently so she wants a break from it? Or maybe Chinese food is not her thing. BUT because it was only one line and there was no context to it, I personally found it ignorantly racist.

This past year has been absolutely shit for East and Southeast Asians due to Covid. It was like SARs again but even worse thanks to a lack of coverage about it on the media and racist language from politicians. Asians are getting abused verbally AND physically. I am very lucky I haven’t received any abuse yet but I always feel like I have to mentally prepare myself for it at any point (you never know). My parents own a Chinese Takeaway back home and I worry if their windows will get smashed again.

The fact that a lot of people refuse to see it as racist and Domino’s haven’t removed the ad (or at least edit it), goes to show how East and Southeast Asians are still IGNORED. Our voices are never heard and brushed aside.

Before you choose to comment on it, ask yourself: Why are people upset about this? How can I help? Do I really want to buy Domino’s to piss people off even though there are waaaay better pizza restaurants out there?
