WHY pretending to be rashid. why does daniel not remember. did devils minion happen in the 70s? they gave part of the armand-and-louis story to lestat-and-louis so what now with armand-and-louis. are they going to give them the armand-and-nicky storyline instead. is that why the bookshelves is that why the penthouse. but then again why the interview. especially because armand thinks other vampires are going to attack louis over it so WHY. also. is armand preparing to leave louis. it doesn't look like it. but maybe that's why the building instead maybe that's armandspeak for a "safe" space to keep louis in when he leaves. is daniel going to what. relapse? is he ever going to go fantasy insane? "marius de romanus haven't heard of him" haven't you. haven't you? will you? sate my curiosity

For the ask game: ❤️💚💙
YAYY thank u sm for the ask! these questions r so fun. I’m going off of the book fandom btw
❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?
Louis <3 I think this is an affect of how likable and overtly sympathetic he is in the amc show but I've seen people getting genuinely offended over Louis being described in fandom (and by Anne rice herself) as a manipulative cold hearted ass who uses his perceived vulnerability and gentleness to distract from the fact that he is just as cruel if not crueler then the other vampires. Like Louis does nottt have strong morals or high empathy lmao. Book Louis weaponizes his privilege like a white woman crying to self victimize into making the other vampires look worse them him 😭 . He refuses to kill humans for a while not bcus it hurts him to take life (he actually takes more pleasure in it then most), he refuses bcus he has catholic brain the way a christians who say "how do atheists have morals without god?" do, misunderstanding that most people actually care about other people and dont need an existential threat to encourage them not to hurt others.
His moral compass is self centered and based in up keeping the appearance of self restraint and monk style lack of enjoying himself, not empathy. If a vampire killed u would u feel better if u knew he cried over how much he got off on it then flaunted his suffering over how little he indulged so that everyone knew how piosis he was 😭.
He is way worse when it comes to how he treats his victims then Armand who intentionally seeks out victims who r asking to die or Lestat who tries the vigilante approach. Louis kills innocents and he thinks it makes him better cuz he only does it sometimes and he feels really really bad about himself afterwards. As akasha said (paraphrased) he's the most predatory of them all.
To specify I love book Louis SOOOO much I love how shitty he is that's why it makes me sad when people mischaracterize him as sincere and get gen mad when ppl characterize him how he is in canon (a lying selfish bitch bless his heart). Like ik amc Louis at this point in canon is unambiguously in the right but he isn't like an accurate reflection of how he is in the books 😭 it's not like amc did what anne rice was trying to do more successfully, they just nulled what anne rice was doing in favor of a more likable protagonist. Which is fine, but like, there's no crime in preferring evil to the core horrible asshole Louis of the books.
💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?
I think the common fandom perception of Armand as the crazy unhinged "omg I can't believe he actually did that in the books??" sadistic maniac villain guy is funny but not really accurate. Armand explicitly not only tries to avoid violence but dislikes it and finds it hard to comprehend why someone would seek out violence and conflict.
The reason he is always doing fucked up shit isn't out of a lestat-esc desire to cause chaos, it's bcus his highly strung ptsd brain has him convinced that the world is a battle ground and he must always be defending himself and acting out in violence.
Since acting out in violence is a reaction hes been taught throughout his life to be standard and necessary, as violence is something so normalized to him he considers it more of a tedious chore then a last resort measure, he usually reacts to conflict in ways that are objectively extreme to anyone who isn't thinking from his perspective. In qotd he even asks Daniel why men choose to fight in wars, explaining that he doesn't understand the draw of violence (bcus he's not a man) and he can't comprehend the supposed thrill of it.
Then he says this in pl to Gregory
Tumblr media
💙: Which character is not as hot as everyone else seems to think they are?
i was going to say Marius but I figure that's too obvious since everyone at this point knows I don't like Marius 😭 so here's an even hotter take,,,,, Lestat ‼️
Only to a degree, I think Lestat is hot and deserves the hype, but i also think he's hot in a different way then a chunk of the fandom does. Based on his book description he's kind of wonky looking, mouth too big for his face, vaguely unnerving shallow pale skin, starved 1700s peasant build but also kind of buff in the unhealthy "i dont eat regularly but I'm strong enough to carry a wolf for miles on my back" sense, weirdly small fucking feet. He def has creepy ass florescent blue doll eyes too. my point is I think when drooling over Lestat the fandom tends to forget this wonkiness in favor of blonde bombshell, Sam Reid chizzled jawline and abs, or conventionally beautiful anime twink, when they should be appreciating lestat in all his weird as shit glory.

mmm…
i wanna talk about paul. i dont think i lingered too much there. bc it’s a sensitive spot i guess? it’s a sensitive thing to be openly unwell. my focus with this post if i really even have that is his relation with louis. i wanna talk about paul in relation to how louis treats him and that being a reason why i love louis so much too. i love both characters. i think paul doesnt really ever get mentioned in fandom much. which is the psychosis experience tbh. so it tracks.
it’s a public spectacle every one wants so desperately to ignore and to be over. in my personal experience (and i don’t think i’m alone in this) the person going through it wants it to be over too. wants that people don't see them that way. but paul’s whole character is generally ignored other than in conversations about whether or not lestat caused his suicide, which was a compelling conversation. whether or not he did is a incredibly prickly thing in the gut of the story. and to be followed up with Louis staying with Armand after having killed claudia who has a thread with paul too. she has a manic/psychotic moment. she’s a collector. she’s a lot of things that society doesn’t want to see exist. (nor does the fandom but i digress) and the way she lives in this undead world is as if she doesnt exist at all so manny ways (like paul in life too in ways) we’ve spoken of if you are someone who dares to acknowledge the fullness of her character. i said this was about paul but im working through a connection in real time. i think that’s why i wanna talk about paul. bc he carries so much of the story in the little time he was alive. and his death is the catalyst for louis’ initial death. not the one lestat gave him, but the one that made it possible for lestat to convince him in the first place. ( the spiritual one maybe? idk. im just thinking thoughts)
what i never question in regards to paul and louis’ relationship, is that louis loves him. that’s what actually makes that: “did lestat kill him really? and whether or not he did kill him….louis thought he did and stayed?” conversation so insane in the membrane to me. because the way he treated paul shows me he does love him so much. one: something in him died with paul. another thing is that louis genuinely wanted him around. he advocated for him to stay out of the hospital. he took him out as soon as he was given the power to as head of household when his father died. (i have so many questions about his own feelings and opinions on his father.) he openly spent time with him. paul was his favorite person. he let paul crawl into bed with him. which is kind of big deal from what i know in the openly unwell population. not a lot of people want to comfort that. and louis allowing his male brother into bed with him for that tender moment is kind of a key moment for him to me bc of how the pressures of homophobia can affect how men are made to feel they can treat their male family members too. Louis sees him and his need and is willing to give it to him. louis wants to be there for his brother. he decides he’ll be the one to take care of him. tells grace not to worry about paul. he would take care of him. he assures paul he wont see lestat anymore. louis’ love for paul was in the way of lestat’s wants and desires. maybe paul did have suicidal ideation already. maybe many things can be true.
(i meant to post this during disability month, but i went through it and so now i’ll just continue where i left off)
louis struggling with killing a man with a daughter and wanting to go home to his brother…😵‍💫. paul isnt a child, but louis was his caretaker. in paul you see louis shine in that role (barring the bit where he pulls a knife out, and threatens to gut him, bc that was a performance. it’s not great but he didn't even want to do that). louis recognizing that locking away a man for having delusions just because he has them at all made paul worse was such a powerfully impactful thing to me. i say this fully well knowing sometimes going to the hospital can be beneficial these days, but even still being locked up there?? drugged and treated horribly given he was black and in a time when mentally ill people were treated heinously? louis saying he belongs at home and seeing to it that paul gets to be home with his family. spending time with him like he’s a person beyond his disability. beyond his delusions. that shit makes me like quiver and cry tbh. that’s mostly what people going through that need most of all and don’t receive. he loved paul. and when paul dies louis dies. idc. (so if lestat’s did take paul away from louis….he killed him twice….also while i’m here i have stirring thoughts about lestat knowing he could tell paul his truthful intentions in town and that out of paul’s mouth no one would believe him. maybe that’s the whole thought. or maybe i’ll come back to it. idk)
(i think in some ways claudia was also theyre to fill the casm paul created too. sorry none of this is like linear or anything im just thinking i guess. maybe i’ll make get into how i see they’re related later.)

i cant believe you had me thinking dream of lestat was real
Alright so I'm gonna go a bit more in depth about it here because the Dream of Lestat is something that really is interesting to consider within the scope of not only Anne Rice as an author but how we talk about spanning bodies of work in general, especially ones that weren't started in an internet age with pieces being more easily archived this is gonna get a bit long.
As is the case with many genre defining authors there is an insistence that critiques people raise these days were things that people just didn't care about back when the books were first being published... you already know where I'm going with this. I've been very open about how much I hate the sympathizing angle for White Lewis as a plantation(s) owner and especially a lot of the comments he specifically makes about black people in the book and while luckily I haven't gotten too much flack for that there are a number of older book fans who get mad when you bring that up as a negative. And bring up the idea of this sort of critique comes from a place of immaturity or is something "new" that people didn't really care about back in the day. The idea that no one back in the late 70s would have qualms with the way book Louis talks about those he's enslaved is not only bullshit on a basic level but laughable when you consider Anne Rice actually took those critiques to heart.
I think that playboy short story with armand has been making the cycles around lately but what people DONT know is that a bit after the release of the first movie (Interview with the Vampire 1994) conversations about White Lewis having slaves started popping back up again. And I'm totally blanking on the name of the journal but like some black lit journal I wanna say was like part of a college? Actually reached out to Anne Rice talking about some of that and not only did she respond she went ahead and shared a rough chapter for an unpublished short story that would have been The Dream of Lestat, which I wanna say? Is maybe the only part of the series with Lestat openly lusting after a real life figure..... Martin Luther King Jr. Just on like a base premise you can already see her ass didn't learn anything from whatever convo she had with the journal like I guess on one hand I wanna say that she did try????? And there is something that can be said about Lestat being this being of impossibility trying to do the impossible as well as merging in those ideas of personal redemption. This is like.... 1994 1995? And Body Theif was 1992 so we know she was already working with themes of Lestat struggling with immortality and his own concept of humanity and more importantly guilt and redemption. And said redemption in Dream of Lestat would be a bit more removed, a sort of attempt of mass redemption via one civil rights leader lmao???
I mean anyway like I said whatever bit got published in the lit journal was very partial and we're never gonna get the full. But going by the way Lestat talked about MLK in such like grandiose terms and with the knowledge he would DEFINITELY have some attempt at saving MLK's life-- most likely through damning him to immortality-- we can assume there would be some level of sensuality going on.... People got real mad when the show was announced that Louis would be black but listen man LISTEN Lestat has always been a chocolate chaser

The biggest WTF for me is when book fans are like well Louis is a liar in the books about why xyz didn't happen in the show and I'm like well if he's lying about everything then why am I watching this show?? are you gonna retell the entire first season with what really happened? cause I feel like the show is wasting my time then.
Any and all Lestat propaganda is lost on me. Anytime someones like well in the books he's not like this, I'm like I dont care that's not what he's like on the show so stfu.
Also I have no fucking clue what ppl are talking about with daniel + armand most of the time like I don't understand how the fuck s1 hints at anything other than an adversarial relationship at the moment.
im assuming ur the same anon as here..
and its like yeah its obvious some things didnt happen the way they did cuz its louis’s point of view & we will get another look at certain scenes but if the whole season is a total lie thats a waste of tv lol. granted the book iwtv narrative is more straightforwardly dark. theres no two interviews theres just one interview in the 70s (which was contemporary. iwtv published in 1976) .and the most that’s ‘contradicted’ in that imo is.. of course getting lestat’s point of view and all but also. ok. so you know how in the show lestat kills the tenor and clicks out on louis saying embrace what you are? in the book, lestat did the same thing but it was w/ these sex workers/prostitutes instead. in tvl lestat is like well actually these women were robbing the seamen so i wasnt the bad guy. this is actually why i think show lestat is nicer than book lestat! not rly cuz he did the same shit to lily. seriously tho book and show les were twins separated at birth and sent off to different universes imo. & in the book louis links w/ lestat whos bog body down bad holding a child and turning his back on him its irony its melodrama and we’re never sure if that scene actually happened. according to les well it didnt and louis was just a drama queen embellishing. thats what louis is, a drama queen embellishing things LOL. & the suspicion around armand is warranted like hes a powerful vampire with an adeptness in the mind gift, but he also loves lestat + his form of showing that is yandere crazy af aka torturing the people lestat cares about if not beating and tormenting lestat himself and its like..armand would do some shit like that hes crazy but itd be a bit boring if all of s1 was a big lie ?. let all the yaoi be problematic! i def think that theres some freaky shit going on between armandxlouis… the 1x07 reveal was like heyy danny ik i just checked out 5 seconds ago but i went from a bad bf to worse :3 the snake sheds his skin as ive dubbed it. i thought armand was rashid tvc until i seen the marius painting and the reveal had me sooo hype. the finale is the biggest divergence in the book besides the obvious changes (race, era, certain scenes etc etc) the fact that theres 2 interviews and that armand x louis are together in the modern day. in the book armand broke up with louis just before the interview, tried to mack on bog body struggle bus lestat and when all that failed he went to fuck w/ daniel. daniel was named in the third book finally and he was revealed to be w/ armand to have this crazy psychosexual bdsm worldwide cruising (well. armand watching danny fuck) blood airtagging romance rigmarole for a few yrs post interview cuz armand wanted someone to teach him what being human was like again and daniel wanted a demonic satanic zaddy. i am the devil’s minion (title chap drop!) armand’s put in a situation where he has to turn a dying 32 year old (book) daniel into a vampire. in the show clearly, daniel is old now but hes dying still. s1 doesnt show much so i can get why ur confused but in later seasons the nature of all their relationships between show armandxlouis , daniel & what happened and how theyll adapt the axd dynamic will be clearer to us all. i just think ppl r too committed to particular fan theories or takes rn. the ennui of being into an ongoing adaptation

Interview with the Vampire Thoughts!
Spoilers Abound!
After a second, drunker viewing of the pilot, here be my drunk thoughts. More sober thoughts may or may not come. IDK:
When I first saw the shots of Lestat at dinner with Louis' family a few days ago I immediately thought about all the ways smart writers could convey this scene. My favorite idea was if the writers conveyed Louis' family as almost immune to Lestat's charms. It would make so much sense! As a black person, I can say that groups of black folks are not easily won over by white people no matter how supernaturally charming lol. The bar is high for us to let our guard down particularly when a white person you dont know is in your personal space. I love that ultimately even Lestat could recognize that Louis' family was not having it and was not the least bit amused by him.
It's amusing and concerning to me how many people don't know/understand that the "French White" thing is not a IWTV specific thing. I mean this EXACT joke was in a Wanda Sykes special a few years ago.
Lestat is a "I'd vote for Obama a third time" kind of white and this very appropriate for his character.
I've seen complaints about the show talking about Louis' blackness too much and I'm just ?????? I mean, he's telling the story of his life and what it was like to live at that time, so yeah he's gonna talk about the hardships of being black at that particular time. It's the only the first episode and their setting the stage. and lestat is a tactless bitch so of course he's bring up Louis' race in the most grating way possible lol. It's a dog whistle y'all. don't fall for it.
I'll be honest - I never understood what was so special about Book!Louis that Lestat was so obsessed with him. But here I totally get it! Show! Louis is a gay black man out of place, in the margins, struggling to make a life for himself. He has these hidden depths that he cant share with anyone, like his gay identity and his love of the opera. An Jacob Anderson is so captivating. It makes sense to me that Lestat would want him as a companion.
Along these lines - the main reason why Book!Lestat is so attracted to Louis is because he reminds him of his ex. So does this mean show!Nicki is going to be Black? That could be interesting, but also fetishistic and weird on Lestat's part if it's not handled well.
On the note of tact - I dont expect to show to be some thoughtful and deep mediation on race. They're trying....but you know....white people....At the end of the day this a trashy show about vampires and I'm fine about that.
The levitating "sex" scene was vey silly and not as a erotic as I thought it was gonna be (though it was very fun). It was just a gay naked cuddle in the air. To call it a sex scene is hella reaching. But I appreciate the show getting weird.
that being said I want a proper sex scene because it would be an incredible waste of the chemistry between these very hot actors not to have them bone.
Daniel's personality feels on point to me. This feels like the same sassy guy that called Armand an immortal idiot. IDK
Louis' modern apartment feels accurate to his personality. He's one of the view vamps that doesn't care that much about aesthetics and I think the show did a good job of designing a home for him that combines luxury with austerity (I know that doesnt make sense but I cant think of the word right now). Its a cold gray cinder block with gray and wood furnishing. there are pops of red and gold here or there but ultimately it feels like a largely empty space only filled with the most necessary furnishings and space decor.
Grace is wonderful and adorable
rip to Lily. a real one.
I dont think Lestat pushed Paul to suicide. I think Lestat is just classless lol
The show does not do a good job of setting the stage for New Orleans culture for an audience that might be unfamiliar. IDT that Louis' thinking that Lestat's powers are just tricks is that weird when you consider that New Orleans has long been a hot bed of voodoo, witchcraft, and supernatural happenings. New orleans is a place where someone like Marie Laveau could make a name for herself in society as a Voodoo practitioner. It wasn't uncommon for folks of all classes to turn to magic for help with illness, love, and other life matters.
A big mainstream show that dresses and lights black people well - what a concept!
I have more thoughts but my hands are tired 🙃

So plugging Lestat (Broadway, 2006) (27th of May version) into the tumblr user Loes spn-in-2021 Verified Musical Meter... 12 out of 18 !
- How much gay tension is there between the protagonist and the antagonist Absolutely off the charts. Not sure if you should count Louis or Armand as the antagonists but both are very gay - How many times do ppl go on their knees A Lot. The biting is also v dramatic as it should be - Is there a moment where someone rolls around on the stage this is v important "Marius." 'Get up, Lestat.' "I can't my legs are shattered" - Is there a milf The entire first act can be described as "Lestat and his moms gay adventures in Paris" and then his mom even leaves to be a milf elsewhere good for her - Does the antagonist or protagonist force themself in songs they don’t even belong in Cant say 'cause Ive only seen one version - Is there any Real fighting. Is the entire stage used in those fights If there is; how good is the reaction of the other characters (ignoring is also a good reaction) Armands hair pulling on Claudia looked painful af so yeah this counts - Are props/dec destroyed for the sake of drama I cant remember so probably not?? - Do people dramatically undress while singing (or dramatically dress while singing I suppose) Gabrielle did absolutely do this - Do the actors look like they want to puke sometimes (like in a good way) The audience recording Ive watched barely has enough pixels to even show faces but I already know they did - How often are there hugs/hand holding/face holding/etc etc etc So much. so much. girl help i am vicariously living through musicals to cope with the lack of human contact - Do the songs go hard (measured with bpm, how often there are screams, how badly the actors want to dance, singing isn’t about singing its about acting) Legit?? Not that much. Idk what happened Elton John how did this happen - Will I have one of the songs stuck in my head for the next week? Embrace it is already stuck in my head - How campy is it (is there leather + glitter) Capes count, as do the general vampire aesthetics. AS do Lestats kneeboots bless - How often are actors forced to dance while singing (do the leads have a choreo) The dancing?? Is not that much?? - Do the actors say “fuck this script” and just make out? Drew Sarich never disappoints. people around Drew Sarich Never Disappoint - How blasphemous is it (would the church approve of it. be honest) There is not one but TWO songs calling out god. There's also Lestat and his mom vandalizing a church and challenging Jesus. (Where AAaarree YouuUUu? WhyyYy Aareee yOouUuu NoOtT StooOOopIInG UssS) - Is there a random gun moment No - when you hear the leitmotif of someone and you KNOW theyre gonna fuck shit up Somehow this doesnt happen?
I want to substract points cause apparently this only ran for a month and all the actors were basically let go because the musical didnt run storm like they expected on broadway......... but i also want to add points cause claudia was VERY good and its still a damn good musical i dont care im glad i saw this before i ever saw interview with the vampire or read any anne rice books

I adore that, all these vampires with hundreds of years of experience under their belts all understanding that you Dont Fuck With Daniel Molloy, young in the blood as he is he will fight you and won't back down. I know you ship marius/armand but do you have any marius/daniel headcanons either romantic or platonic? I see Marius unselfishly taking care of Daniel when he needs him as redemption for how he failed or hurt Armand, Bianca, and Pandora.
Ooooh now see , Anon, m/a is my otp but I am an absolute multishipper and have toyed a bit with m/d too!
*Daniel has times when he's really not lucid of the world around him at all. He's non verbal. Sometimes he wanders the house and Marius keeps strong locks on the doors.
*Daniels obsession came on a night in mid summer, when it was still warm outside from the sun and Marius had taken him out of the city so Daniel could have some fresh air. He'd been /so/ anxious the last few days. Nightmares about fire, about people burning, screaming. But it's night out here, dark and warm and he finds the sound of the train going by on the tracks to be hypnotic.
Although his thrall is the models and painting them, he tries his hands at the canvas later, for a change of pace. Whereas Marius uses oils though, Daniel takes to water color. He loves watching the colors bloom over the paper, and spends time experimenting with odd things like painting with coffee stains or tea. Marius isn't sure he likes it but seeing Daniel try something new is a relief.
Marius teaches Daniel Latin, and Italian, though he picks up the latter better than the former.
Daniel was never awkward around or intimidated by Marius. He had no stories of the great marius, the wise one. He was always just Armands master, Lestats mentor. Besides, there were times when Danny could not dress or bathe himself, couldn't hunt for himself. They had to be close. So he had no trouble arguing with him over trivial things.
It was blood sharing that did it. While bloodsharing is always a wonderful experience it can be a bond of plantonic love or romantic or passionate love and neither have any idea when it moved from one side to the other. Probably around the time Daniel refused to take Marius' wrist and wanted his throat instead.
Marius shows Daniel visions of gardens and Venice in the blood, and Danny wonders if it's the same places as what Armand showed him when he made him
