Teaser for upcoming Chenford Fic: Moonlight & Magic
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | Oneshot | Rated G | 4x21 Mother's Day | Chenford Bingo | Truth Spell
Hi, all! I've got a Chenford fic that's been sitting in my drafts since the night 4x21 aired, and I wanted to share part of it. Perhaps if there is enough interest, I'll find the spark of inspiration I need to finish it.
Check out an excerpt below the gif from @chenfordsource, which is right where the story picks up.
Tumblr media
(original post here)
“Could you just wait here?” Lucy asked. “I need to go find Lopez and figure out how to go put a curse on someone.”
“Yeah, right,” Chris chuckled before watching her walk away. “Oh, you’re serious.”
Lucy walked hurriedly over to the Detective desks in the bullpen, but didn’t see Angela anywhere in sight. She noticed the computer shut off for the night and dialed her number.
“Angela? Hey, did you already go home for the night?”
“Yeah. But what’s up?”
“Oh, okay.” Lucy was silent for a moment. “It’s not work-related. Is that okay?”
“Of course it is,” Angela answered without missing a beat. “What’s going on?”
“I, uh—I wanted your help putting a curse on Tim.”
Her friend laughed. “Why do you want to put a curse on Tim? What did he do now?”
“He pranked me and I need to get back at him.”
“With a curse? That must have been some prank he pulled. Curses aren’t to be taken lightly, Lucy.”
“I know. And I’m sure about this.”
“Tell you what. Can I call you back after dinner and we can discuss finding the right one for you? Then I can give you the instructions tomorrow. Would that work?”
Lucy had really been hoping for something tonight. To get back at him as soon as possible—while she was still feeling motivated to get back at him—but tomorrow would have to do. She tried to hide her disappointment when she answered. “Yeah. Yeah, of course. Enjoy your dinner. I hope it makes up for the way the rest of your day went.”
“I hope so too.” Angela said, gazing at her husband, who had promised her an evening of pampering. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
Wesley looked over at Angela from his spot behind the steering wheel. “Am I hearing that right? Lucy wants to put a curse on Tim?”
“Yep,” Angela said as she clapped her phone between her hands. She grinned widely. “And I know just the one.”
✨️ 🔮 ✨️
I hope you've enjoyed this teaser! I go back to work on this one every now and then. It's been fully outlined and is probably more than 75% finished, but I've been stuck on a couple of parts. Honestly, I could probably benefit from a beta to help push me across the finish fine. You can message me here or on Discord if you're interested in helping. 😊

Chenford Fanfic: About Last Night
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | One shot | 5K | Rated T | 5x01 Alternate Take | Sharing a Bed | Repressed feelings | Chenford Week '23
Story summary: Chenford, Vegas, and the one bed trope
In a world where their undercover op isn't interrupted, Lucy and Tim must find a way to share a bed one night in Las Vegas.
Tumblr media
One day last November, my friend @heatherelf77 shared the following tweet, and it got my brain a'thinkin'.
Tumblr media
My first thought was of a scene from the 1934 film It Happened One Night, when Clark Gable creates a room divider out of a blanket between his and Claudette Colbert's beds. I imagined Tim doing his own version of that for sharing a bed with Lucy, and it went from there.
Tumblr media
Read an excerpt below, or jump on over to AO3 to read it now!
Tumblr media
Lucy opened the bathroom door to find Tim arranging pillows on the bed.
“What are you doing?” she asked, amusement plain on her face and barely able to contain her laughter.
Tim paused and looked up at her. Why did he feel like she caught him doing something he shouldn’t?
“I’m creating a, uh–,” he gestured with his arm, moving it horizontally over the bed from head to toe and back again.
“A pillow wall?” she asked.
Tim looked sheepish under her gaze and shrugged one shoulder.
“Tim…” Lucy swallowed a grin, trying to maintain her professionalism “… do you really think that’s necessary?”
His cheeks flushed with embarrassment over the thought of admitting out loud that he was worried about being able to resist his attraction to her—especially when she had already made it clear that she didn’t feel the same way.
“I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable. I know that this wasn’t part of the plan.”
“It wasn’t. But I can keep my hands to myself if you can.”
Tim held his tongue. That was certainly a loaded subject, and one he had already given far too much thought to in the past 24 hours. He knew he didn’t trust himself to answer. Avoiding the topic, he rolled his eyes and chucked a pillow in her direction.
“Fine,” he relented, and started to place the pillows back at the head of the bed. “Which side of the bed do you sleep on?”
“You choose,” she offered, before tossing the pillow back to him. “It really doesn’t matter to me.”
A knock and a voice diverted their attention to the door.
“Room service.”
Lucy was already making her way to the door when Tim stopped her.
“Wait,” he said in a firm, but quiet voice, causing Lucy to turn to look at him. She noticed his hand hovering behind the firearm tucked away at the small of his back.
“I’ve got it,” she reassured him. “It’s okay.”
“I know you do,” he returned, stepping in close and lowering his voice. “I just don’t like this. Any of this. I keep feeling like something is going to go wrong or our cover’s going to be blown.” He peered through the peephole to find a waiter with a room service cart on the other side. Keeping his hand behind his back, Tim opened the door, then poked his head out to look up and down the hallway.
The coast was clear.
“Baby,” Lucy cooed, walking toward Tim, “you got us room service?” Her fingers curled around his biceps and the tips of her press-on nails sent a shiver through his body.
He turned his head to look at her, and dammit, the way she looked up at him with adoration written so plainly across her face reminded him she could turn her undercover persona on and off so easily. If he didn’t know any better, he’d believe she was actually into him. And it was his job to play along.

Chenford Fanfic Teaser: Sequel to That's What Partners are For
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | Rated E | Intentional Seduction | Undressing
Remember when I wrote a Chenford fic inspired by this moment from Bones?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📸 @romanticallyterrible [original post here]
Well, the sequel is inspired by this moment from Psych.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📸 @onscreenkisses [original post here]
I started writing the sequel right after I finished the first installment. It's been kicking around in my drafts, and I occasionally shake off the dust and work on it. I've made quite a bit of progress this time, and wanted to share a little bit of what I've been working on.
Here are a couple of short excerpts from the first half of the story.
Title TBA (Rated E) After the bomber is caught, Lucy and Tim give into their temptations. Tim decides it's his turn to undress Lucy.
Tumblr media
... But every signal he had been getting from Lucy, combined with a gut feeling that grew stronger by the moment, told him—screamed at him—that she wanted him, too.
Here goes nothing.
Tim leaned a hip on the bar, facing Lucy. Close, but just out of reach. While they waited for a bartender to notice them, Tim lowered his lips to Lucy’s ear so he could be heard over the music. “Do you trust me to order for you?” he asked. “I think I’ve got a good idea of what you like.”
She wouldn’t have expected for such simple words to have such an effect on her. But something about the way Tim said those words filled Lucy’s head with ideas that she had tried to abandon after she walked out of the men’s locker room yesterday afternoon, evidence bags in hand.
Tim had pulled away from her ear, but lingered nearby, not having returned to his full height. Lucy looked up at him slowly. “Yes,” she said. “I trust you.”
“Two glasses of San Matias Cristal, dressed, please,” Tim told the bartender as he handed over his credit card.
“Opening up a tab?” the bartender asked.
“No, I’ll close it out,” he told them. He didn’t plan to be at the bar for very long if things went the way he had hoped.
“Tequila?” Lucy asked him, surprised. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen you drink tequila.”
The heat building inside of Lucy’s body felt like no match for the look in Tim’s eyes when he said, “I wanted to try something new tonight.”
...
“Cheers.”
Their glasses clinked together and Tim’s eyes followed Lucy’s movements as her tongue peeked out to swipe a taste of salt from the rim of her glass before she took a sip. She closed her eyes as she savored the smooth taste of the tequila Tim ordered for her before letting the icy liquor slide down her throat.
Tim took a drink from his own glass, all the while keeping his eyes on her as she lifted the lime garnish to her lips and sucked its juice.
He was overcome with his need to touch her.
His fingers reached for her face and his thumb skimmed across the tip of her nose.
Tim leaned in, his lips next to her ear. “Salt,” he explained, his voice rumbling.
“Oh,” she said breathlessly.
As his lips pulled away, Lucy could feel the warmth of Tim’s breath coasting over her cheek. But Lucy couldn’t tell if the movement bringing their faces closer together came solely from Tim, or if she herself was drifting closer. Their noses now brushing up against each other, Lucy could sense that their lips were just a hair’s breadth apart.
She looked up at him through her lashes. “What are you doing, Tim?”
“This? It’s just… very close talking.”
Lucy shifted in her seat to bring their conversation (and their lips) even… closer. “Mmm, I see,” she said, enjoying the vibration that was created between their bodies.
“And what do you feel like talking about?” she asked, briefly closing her eyes, then opening them to make sure it wasn’t all a dream.
Tim placed his fingers on top of her wrist so lightly, it felt like a whisper.
“You.”
Tumblr media
Yes folks, Tim does indeed try something new that night. 😏
The sequel is rated E, so instead of posting a second chapter of the T-rated That's What Partners are For, it will be part of a series.
The series is tentatively titled Take It Off and can be found here on AO3 so you can subscribe for updates.

New Chenford FanFic: Interludes
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | Ch 1 of ? | 1K | Rated T | Missing & Extended Scenes | Season 5 | Flirting | Idiots in Love
Story summary: Chenford is finally canon! But what about all the moments that we don't get to see? These are those missing scenes.
Chapter summary: He’d been waiting for this moment for far too long. AKA, an extended take of the ending scene from s05e09, Take Back
Read an excerpt below the gif, or read all of chapter 1 on AO3!

Chapter 1: Far too long and not a moment too soon
Tim hoped that every day as acting Watch Commander wouldn’t be as eventful as this one. He was already thinking about tomorrow’s work when today’s wasn’t even finished. Maybe he could put those last few files off until the morning. He could come in early to work on them. That is, if he could sleep. Not knowing when Lucy would break up with Chris had been weighing on him. He believed her when she said that she wasn’t having second thoughts. But that did little to quell the stress he felt twisting into a tight knot in his belly.
Being the boss today meant that he hadn’t even been able to check on Genny to see how she and his nephews were handling the move. Genny, the only family he had in his life and who was moving back to L.A. for him. Because he was the only connection she had and she missed him. Because he knew she was counting on her big brother to be there for her, like he had been their whole lives—even when he didn’t know how to help himself. But how much time had he even spent with her and the boys since they moved back? He decided to call her as soon as he was on his way out to the parking lot. Maybe they could all have some family time this weekend. Maybe they could—
A knock on the door frame pulled him away from all those swirling thoughts.
Lucy.

𝘐 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘠𝘰𝘶 Ch 4 Teaser
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | Chapter 4 of ? | 11.2K | Rated T | Alternate Universe | Meet Cute | Mistaken for a Couple | Inaccurate depictions of professional baseball
Please enjoy this excerpt for my the next chapter of Chenford fanfic, 𝘐 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘠𝘰𝘶.
Tumblr media
📸@tim-lucy (original post here)
“So…” Lucy looked down at her hands in her lap while she smoothed down her dress. She hoped the false confidence in her voice would hide any nerves over bringing up the next topic. “... you played for the Dodgers.”
“The Oklahoma City Dodgers. I want to make that clear. It was the minors and it wasn’t a big deal.”
“It’s still something to be proud of,” Lucy said. “And I’m not just saying that because I want to see your rookie card.” Her smile was warm, but cautious, as she waited for Tim to respond.
“It’s not…” he looked into her gentle and understanding eyes, “... something I show to people. Or even talk about,” Tim said quietly.
“Oh.” The air in the truck's cab suddenly felt stifling to Lucy, and she wondered if she had crossed a line by wanting to know more about that time in Tim’s life. “I’m sorry I asked. Please just forget I said anything.”
“Lucy…” Tim’s voice was gentle as he turned toward her and he started to reach for her. But he realized what he was doing and his hand retreated back to his side. “I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant…” he sighed softly. “I haven’t talked about it in a long time. Because even though getting paid to play baseball was a lifelong dream come true, it wasn’t… I think I’ve been letting some of the painful memories from how it all ended overshadow all the good times. And there were a lot of good times."
...
"I was thinking… Maybe you could tell me about some of those good times you had when you were a pro baseball player?”
“Again, barely professional,” he said, downplaying his achievement.
“Again, does it really matter if it made you happy?” Lucy countered. “But I don’t know anything about that time of your life. And I think, as friends, I should know at least the basics. How long were you pro? What position did you play? Is it true that there’s no crying in baseball?”
Tim bit back a smile and shook his head.
“You can pick another topic,” she suggested gently. “But I know that nothing nearly as interesting has ever happened in my life. And even though I don’t know much about baseball—which is something that I think needs to change—I’d love to hear whatever you want to tell me.”
Like none other, Lucy had a way of making Tim’s wall come down.
And so he talked. He went back in his memory and shared things with Lucy that he hadn’t thought of in years.
⚾⚾⚾⚾⚾
I hope you've enjoyed this teaser! I hope it won't be too long before Chapter 4 is out, but I don't have a timeline for it yet.
In the meantime, you can read chapters 1-3 on AO3.

Chenford Fanfic: 𝘐 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘠𝘰𝘶 - Ch 3
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | Chapter 3 of ? | 11.2K | Rated T | Alternate Universe | Meet Cute | Mistaken for a Couple | Thanksgiving
Story Summary: A series of meet-cutes that keep bringing Lucy and Tim together in an alternate universe.
Chapter summary: Fate Mutual friends bring Lucy and Tim back together. This time, for Thanksgiving dinner.

Tim knocked on Lucy’s door to find her wearing a plum-colored sweater dress that hugged her curves and a berry shade of lipstick that made him think about the achingly sweet taste of her lips.
He had felt like such a fool for getting carried away with his desire for her on their date. That had never been the plan. While he knew he was attracted to Lucy, he hadn’t anticipated that the first chance he had to be alone with her, he would feel himself falling so hard and so fast. She was, without a doubt, remarkable in every way he could conceive, and his brain disregarded its own signals that were screaming at him to pump the brakes. He only had himself to blame for how things had ended and for ruining something that he knew in his gut had such great potential. But Lucy had been nothing but gracious, even though he could see a glimmer of hurt in her eyes when she left to walk back to her door.
There was no sign of that now as she stood in front of him, looking effortlessly beautiful.
“Hi,” he said after a beat, realizing that they had been staring at each other.
“Hi,” she echoed, leaning her shoulder on the edge of the open door.
“You–you look… nice,” he said lamely.
“Thanks,” she returned with a shy smile. “You do, too.” The deep cranberry color of his sweater was appropriately festive, and she would be lying if she said she hadn’t noticed the way the sweater stretched across his pecs and clung to his biceps. “Do you want to come in for a minute?

Chenford Fanfic: Just Us (Finally)
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | One shot | 1.3K | Rated T | Post-5x09 | Episode 5x10 alternate take | First Date | First Kiss
Here's my short and sweet 5x10 spec fic that I didn't get to post before last night's episode.
Read on AO3 (linked again below the summary and gif)
Summary: Tim picks Lucy up for their first date.
-----------
“Do you still want to do this?”
“Yes.” Her voice was soft, but her conviction was firm. “Of course I do. But I almost feel like we should stay in. Going out makes it feel too real.”
Tim stooped almost imperceptibly, lowering himself so that the difference in their height didn’t seem so stark. “Real sounds like a good thing.” He gave her a small, reassuring smile.
“It is. It definitely is,” Lucy reassured him in kind. “But real also means that if we mess things up, that will be real too.”

WIP Game
Saw this idea elsewhere on tumblr and wanted to play.
How to play: Post the names of all the stories in your WIP folder. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! Then tag a few folks to keep it going (or consider yourself tagged if you're reading this).
I’m going to start with tagging @chry5alis-05 because I know they have a ton of WIPS as well. @silverskull @wanna-be-bold @theawkwardanglophile I hope some of y'all will play along!
I'm limiting my list to Chenford WIPs (as I now dabble in other fandoms) and to stories that are at least in the outline stage.
Published WIPs
All of these stories have multiple chapters in progress (even if they haven’t been updated in a while). Listed in the order they were originally published:
Trouble, please be kind: (Rated T) After Amber, Tim and Lucy each have feelings realizations
Santa Ana Winds: (Rated M) Lucy and Tim start a relationship just as circumstances force them apart. Can they find their way back together?
Mixed Bouquet: Flower Shop Shorts: (Rated T) companion piece to my rom-com flower shop AU
I Keep Coming Back to You: (Rated T) meet-cute AU where Lucy and Tim can’t quite get their timing right
Interludes: (Rating varies) unseen moments from S5 after Chenford becomes canon
Bonus:
That’s What Partners are For: (rated T) Lucy collects evidence [*cough* undresses Tim] in the aftermath of ax explosion. This story is currently labeled as a one-shot, but there’s an E-rated follow-up where it’s Tim’s turn to undress Lucy.
(A Selection of) Unpublished WIPs
Moonlight & Magic: (Rated G) post-Tim’s proposal prank in 4x21, Lucy tries to put a curse on Tim
Sliding Doors: (Rated E) Two ways Lucy and Tim could have gotten together in Las Vegas, and one way they did
Dessert First: (Rated E) Canon Chenford-era - Tim is ready for dinner, but Lucy has other ideas
Dream Lover: (Rated E) Canon Chenford-Era - Sexy Rookie/TO roleplay
Bonus: Stories still being outlined**
Summer Associates: Rival law students Tim & Lucy learn to work together
A Series of Holidays: S4 Lucy and Tim spend their holidays (working) together
The Rookie/Rosewood crossover: slightly AU timeline where Lucy meets another Tim doppelgänger, Dr. Adrian Webb: a private pathologist who recently moved to LA from Miami [this is Eric Winter’s character from Rosewood]. Is Adrian everything Lucy has ever wanted? Or is he just a substitute for Tim?
It’s Always the Wife: Rookie!Tim is the only one who believes Lucy didn’t murder her fiancé.
The Bet: S2 AU - Tim goes on the date with Rachel but realizes Lucy is the one he wants
Grief hook-up: slightly AU S4 - after Tim’s father dies, he turns to Lucy for comfort
**not gonna be ready anytime soon
There’s more where this came from, but those aren’t even outlined yet. And there are soooo many of them.

Lucy was unloading groceries from her car when she heard a familiar voice.
“Lucy?”
She stilled as she tried to place the voice, then looked up to find the face of the man she had been daydreaming about for the past two weeks.
“Tim?” Lucy tilted her head as she looked at him, not believing her eyes. He was just two parking spaces away, keys still in his hand, and a messenger bag slung across his shoulder. “I almost didn’t recognize you without your suspenders and axe.”
He laughed. That deep, soulful laugh that she had heard several times on the night they met.
“What–What are you doing here?”
“I just moved in. Building six.”
“Building five,” she replied, giving a tilt of her head toward her own apartment.
“What are the odds?” he asked her, a look of wonderment on his face.
“I don’t know,” she smiled, shaking her head. “But I’m not going to argue with it.”
“You’re the expert. So I’m inclined to agree,” he said, flashing his charming smile at her once more.
The way he looked at her told her that he not only remembered, but understood, what her job was about. Most people forgot her “boring” job. It was just one more reason she thought that Tim was different from most people she met.
Lucy shifted her weight to balance the grocery bags in her arms.
“Can I carry one of those for you?” Tim asked.
“Oh. Um, yeah. Of course,” she said, her hands brushing against his as she settled a bag into his arms. She was used to doing it herself, but she wasn’t about to turn down his offer. “Most of the time, I’m too stubborn to make more than one trip. A remnant, I guess, from when I lived on the third floor with no elevator.”
“Ah, yes. I know exactly what you mean. Although when I lived a few floors up, I usually bought fewer groceries at a time. On the one hand, it was my budget. On the other, it was because I had to stash the stuff I really liked outside of the common area. Or else it might go ‘missing.’”
“No!” Lucy laughed, turning her key in the lock. “Wesley and Darrin?” She hit the light switch and continued toward the small kitchen.
“No, they were pretty good roommates. It was Trevor. Our other roommate. When he wasn’t crashing at his girlfriend’s place, that is.” He followed her into the apartment that was a mirror image of his own and set the bag of groceries down beside the others. “He never admitted to it, but he could not have been more obvious.”
Tim started unbagging the groceries, setting them on the counter as Lucy zig-zagged between the kitchen and pantry, putting the items in the correct places while they talked about their bad roommate experiences.
Lucy finished putting away the box of penne Tim had handed her and leaned her elbows on the counter behind her, taking him in. He was folding her reusable grocery bags—well, folding and refolding one in particular that was supposed to fold into a pocket on the bag itself.
“Are you all moved in?”
“Not quite. All the big stuff is in place. But I’ve still got a lot of boxes to unpack. I thought I had gotten rid of enough things before the move, but there’s nothing like going from a house to an apartment to make you realize you need to downsize.”
She reached for the bag he was trying to fold. “Here, let me,” she said. “This one folds in on itself and it’s kinda tricky until you get the hang of it.” She took the bag and smoothed it out on the counter before beginning to fold it. “Why are you downsizing? I mean, if you don’t mind my asking.”
“I don’t mind,” he said quietly. He wasn’t the type to share details about his personal life, and especially with someone he barely knew. But he wanted to tell her. He wanted to tell her anything she wanted to know, and not just so he could keep their conversation going. “I was, uh, divorced recently.”
Lucy turned her attention away from the bag for just a moment. Her eyes recognized the look on Tim’s face as one of someone recalling a painful experience, but she remained silent and kept folding the bag as she listened.
“I couldn’t justify staying there. Too much space for just me. But I think a fresh start might be just what I needed. Help put distance between then and now… After everything was finalized, the house sold almost as soon as it went on the market, and here I am.”
“And here you are.” Lucy gave him a small smile.
“Looks like a nice complex. And at least I know there’s one friendly face nearby.”

Chenford Fanfic: 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘢 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦, 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘐
The Rookie Fanfiction | Chenford | Complete | 9.8 K | Rated E | Intimacy | Sex | S04E22 Alternate Take
But Lucy did have expectations—or rather, she was hopeful . Hopeful that “dinner” might lead to something more. Now that they were both single. Now that they’d had just a taste of what it might be like. She knew she craved more. She hoped he did, too.
Or:
Picking up right where Part I ended, Lucy and Tim juggle the responsibilities of their job while coming to terms with what they mean to each other.

After Angela and the rest of their team had left the room, Lucy and Tim remained in their seats next to each other, file folders and schematics of all the buildings in Hajek’s holdings littered on the table in front of them. Hajek was playing things close to the vest, only giving Tim a vague idea about when the job would be coming up, which made it all the more difficult to plan out their operation in as much detail as they would have liked. And depending on how the job went down, Tim and Lucy knew they might need to extend the time they spent undercover. They needed to be ready to go at a moment’s notice.
Lucy tapped her pen on the edge of the table, pulling her bottom lip between her teeth before she asked Tim the question that she had been burning to ask. “How did Ashley take it when you told her you have to postpone your trip to Hawaii?”
“Uh, well… she took it about as well as possible, considering we broke up.”
“Oh. Because of… because of the undercover mission?” she asked. “I’m sorry, you don’t have to tell me. It’s not any of my business.”
“No, it’s okay. Recently, I… It turned out that we didn’t want the same things. It just made sense to end things now, before… I don’t know, before things got more serious.” He fidgeted with the paper sleeve around his cup of coffee. “And Chris? How does he feel about you going undercover?”
“He… Well, he doesn’t.”
He furrowed his brow as he looked at her.
“We also broke up, um, recently.” She flinched internally at the misdirect, but shrugged lightly, trying to play it off. “We weren’t on the same page. I always felt like he was more invested in our relationship than I was. And we were lacking that–that something. That spark. We just weren’t a good fit.”
Her half-hearted smile faltered when she looked at Tim, and he remembered the single time her ex-boyfriend came up in conversation the night before—when he asked her how Chris would have touched her, and she didn’t answer.
“I’m sorry, Lucy. I feel like part of that is my fault. I’m the one who set you up with him.”
Lucy started to reach for his hand on the table, but stopped just short of making contact. Tim looked at her hand hovering so close to his on the table—so close and so tempting to reach out and hold the way he did last night (oh, the things they did last night)—and then looked back at her face.
“Tim, that’s… that’s really sweet. But also really unnecessary. You didn’t force us into anything. It was something we had to figure out for ourselves.”
“How are you feeling about that?”
She started to smile. When she first met Tim, he never would have cared, let alone asked about her feelings or personal life.
“I’m feeling… good. Content even? I feel like everything is as it should be right now. And you? Are you doing okay with everything?”
“I am. Even though I don’t think I can get my deposit back for that trip,” Tim laughed. “But I feel better knowing that my future is open—that I’m open—to finding what it is I really want in a relationship.”
He tried to hide what he was really thinking—who he was really thinking of—and had been thinking of since the restless hours he spent last night re-examining his relationship with Lucy. But the softness in his voice and in the look in his eyes threatened to give him away.
“I think that’s probably the best outcome when you end any relationship,” she told him. “You take your experiences, positive or negative though they may be, and let that help guide you—to recognize what it is you want when you’re ready for something new.”
Tim was quiet for a moment before he spoke. “That's a good way of looking at it.”
He smiled softly at her, and the air between them seemed to warm ever so slightly as they both turned back to the research in front of them.
It was going to be a long day.

“But I think what’s even more important—what’s practical in this type of situation—is that we’re comfortable with intimacy.”
“What do you mean?” he asked tentatively.
“It’s not about kissing. It’s… it’s those little touches, the comfort, the familiarity they have with each other that tells the world who they are to each other.”

“If we’re gonna make this work, our backstory’s got to be airtight.”
She laughed off his idea that they met at a barbeque, dismissing it as lame, and he dared her to do better.
“You were on the run from the cops… A bank robbery gone wrong. You ended up in my building—frantic, looking for a place to hide, and… and I opened the door for you. I lied to the cops for you. And… Ooh.” After the thought popped into her head, the look in her eyes could have burned right through him. “And it got me so hot that we hooked up while they were still searching the building.”
Tim’s jaw was left hanging open by the mental image Lucy had painted.
“Okay,” he gulped, his mind still preoccupied with thoughts about his and Lucy’s alter egos sparking as soon as they met. “That… That… That’s pretty good, actually.”
It was more than good. He admired how self-assured she was when she created a backstory for their undercover personas and the pride she exuded as she accepted his compliment.
“Thank you.”
When his eyes locked with hers, she noticed a flicker of something that might have been lust in his eyes.
“Mm-hmm. So, look… we should—” he tried to find the words most likely to not let him sound like an imbecile. “We should probably, you know, talk about the elephant in the room.”
She gestured with an open hand for him to continue.
“You know, ‘cause, if—if we’re gonna sell that we are actually boyfriend and girlfriend, we need to be… you know, convincing. We should be comfortable with one another.”
“You’re not comfortable with me? Wow, Tim. Almost two years riding with you and the truth finally comes out,” she deadpanned.
“I—that’s not what I—” he threw his hands up in frustration.
“I know,” she said with a grin. “Sometimes you make it too easy to get you riled up.”
He glared at her. “Look, all I’m saying is that we should make sure we can convincingly pull this off. Maybe we need to, I don’t know, kiss or something.”
When she didn’t answer right away, Tim suddenly felt embarrassed for making that suggestion.
Lucy knew how much he liked to be in control, and she could see him getting antsy as he waited for her response. So she let him sweat it out a moment longer.
“I agree…” she said, breaking the silence.
He looked at her thoughtfully. Not that he would ever tell her, but he enjoyed hearing her perspective on a wide array of matters—on anything, really. She had a way of describing things that held his attention.
“For starters, look at how far apart we’re sitting,” she told him. “We look like strangers.”
“That’s not… being strangers. That’s what’s called personal space, Lucy.”
“Personal space,” she scoffed. “Okay, if you’re Dim and I’m…” she paused before letting the ridiculous nickname Tim came up with leave her lips. “… Juicy.”
But as soon as she said it, his own lips cracked into a smile and she couldn’t help but laugh, her fingers landing on his arm that was stretched across the back of the couch.
“If I’m Juicy,” she said through a chuckle, “then we like each other enough to be close. We enjoy each other. We crave each other.” Her voice was laced with desire, and Tim could feel a pool of heat rising low in his belly in response. “So it’s not so much about a kiss as it is appearing like we work closely together all the time. Like we’re partners. Like we depend on each other and have each other’s backs.”
He wondered how it was possible she didn’t realize that the words she was using to describe this pair of criminals could easily describe herself and Tim? “That makes sense,” he nodded. It makes a lot of sense.
