3:42 A.M.
It was the middle of the night. The night air was crisp and cool just like the autumn leaves that littered the ground, just a few days away from Halloween. The weather was colder for the holiday than usual, but it likely wasn’t going to be much of an issue, anyways; at least not for those who ‘celebrate’ the holiday via getting two extra shifts shoved on them against their will in a candy store.
Staring blearily at his phone in his hand as the bolded letters displayed the time, a simple 3:42 A.M. looking back at him, he’d groan. Silently, he’d click the device off again and quickly pocketed it before flopping onto the counter— leaning on it. He has about two hours left of his shift, still, and a bit more seeing as he was scheduled in until 6 A.M. Honestly, he didn’t even get why this candy store was open at night— like, really, who needed a 24/7 candy store? There are gas stations for that. Yeah, sure, there’s less variety, but at least gas station workers indirectly sign up for that kinda crap. Kevin wasn’t even aware he’d get thrown on night shift every other night whenever he got hired. Regardless, he sighed, idly grounding himself in for a few more hours— but hey, at least it was quiet. No one ever came in at these times, *ever*. Like, the day someone did, he’d probab—
Pausing as he got knocked out of his thoughts by the small bell hitched above the door got rung, he’d pick up his gaze. In front of him seemed to be some man, on the shorter side, with an obvious cowlick within a bushel of black hair and heavy eyeliner— which only really made the eye-bags under their eyes the more obvious. They were looking around the store, blissfully unaware of the clerk who just seemed to be blearily staring at them, before they glanced over. Head tilting, they’d soon spare Kevin a smile— lifting a hand, one with oddly sharp nails, Kevin noted, to wave at him. Somehow, that one small gesture made his brain fry up for a moment— and after a long, bordering-awkward beat of silence, he’d lift his own to half-heartedly return the wave. This made the person grin, a large, crinkled one of.. an odd amount of joy. As Kevin rose a brow at the smile, the individual soon turned to stare at the shelves— presumably looking for.. y’know, candy. Why else would they be here?
With the person occupied, Kevin somewhat slipped into his thoughts— a garbled mess of confusion, very slight irritation that wasn’t truly directed at the stranger, and something else. He wasn’t sure what the something else was, because, by the time he started to pick at the ball of yarn equivalent in his brain of really out of place thoughts, a light clearing of the throat tore him out again. Standing in front of him was the stranger, their gaze soft— still carrying an idle smile as they raised a brow.
“You alright, friend?” They practically chuckled out the words, but their tone was friendly— almost kind of concerned.
Clearing his own throat a bit, Kevin would straighten. “Er,.. yeah, I’m— fine. What do you want today?”
Quickly falling onto the basically pre-programmed response, he’d pause as his gaze flicked down towards the three bags of candy that got dumped on his counter. They weren’t mini bags, or something— they were the family-sized kind. Huh.
“Just this, thank you.” Speaking with some everlasting smile, something no one seemed to possess in this town, the stranger would close their eyes a bit with a faint snicker.
Raising a brow, Kevin would begin to scan the items— idly watching this stranger for the entirety of it. They just smiled back, the entire time. After he had finished, he’d scoot the bags back over the counter to the other.
“Er,.. want.. a receipt?” Slightly tense as he spoke, he’d continue to eye the stranger— who seemed to kinda.. buffer for once. They murmured out some garbled statement, it almost kinda sounding like a ‘My nam-‘ ?? Before they cut themself off, seeming to snap back into reality from whatever.. random daze they had gone into.
“Oh— uh, sorry! Yeah- yeah, receipt— yes!” Their grin would turn ever so slightly nervous as they seemed to flush up a bit. Kevin would just slide the receipt over— which the stranger would take, but they didn’t.. move. With a few long beats of silence, Kevin would soon clear his throat.
“Do.. do you need somethin—“ “What’s your name?”
Seeming to retract after having cut him off, they’d slap a hand over their mouth— soon lowering the fingers to give an apologetic smile.
“Uh,.. Kevin.” As he murmured, he’d softly tap the name tag— which made the other have a long moment of staring at it, almost dumbfounded. It made a very slight snrrk slip out of him.
Regaining their composure, they’d soon wipe the expression in favour of smiling up at him. “Well— uh, uh!! I’m Streber.”
“Nice.. to meet.. youu?” Head tilting a bit, he’d look over the other again— raising a brow, albeit his expression rather neutral other than that.
Sounding like they were about to implode, they’d quickly spurt out a “Yeah!! Yeah- uh, nice to meet you, too!” Before beginning to step back. “Uh— see you around?”
“Mmuh, sure— yeah..” Slowly, Kevin gave a weak smile, mainly a confused one, “.. see you around.”
With that, ‘Streber’ would give a giddy grin before quickly scampering out of the store, giggling to himself as he shook a closed fist quickly up and down.
Slumping over the counter again, Kevin would press a hand to his cheek as he watched the doors close behind themselves. For some reason he couldn’t really explain, he could feel a slight smile on his face.
How weird.
