IL BUCO NELL’OZONO È DIMEZZATO: SI STA CHIUDENDO

Lo strato di ozono che protegge la terra dai raggi solari dannosi si sta ricomponendo ed ha raggiunto un calo record nella densità delle sostanze chimiche nocive che lo distruggono, ridotte del 50% rispetto ai livelli degli anni ’80.

Il dato è stato diffuso dall’ultima rilevazione della National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), l’ente federale che si occupa di monitorare il buco nell’ozono, che 35 anni dopo il primo allarme lanciato dalla NASA ha definito questi valori una “pietra miliare significativa sulla via della guarigione”. Lo sforzo mondiale seguito alla firma del Protocollo di Montréal nel 1987 da parte di tutte le 197 Nazioni Unite, rappresenta la prima e unica volta nella storia in cui un trattato ha ricevuto una partecipazione unanime. Nel 2000 la produzione di CFC è scesa dal suo massimo di un milione di tonnellate (raggiunto nel 1988) a meno di 100.000 tonnellate per anno, grazie anche all’introduzione degli idroclorofluorocarburi (HCFC) che non contenendo atomi di bromo o di cloro dannosi per l’atmosfera. La progressiva riduzione della produzione di CFC in tutto il mondo ha permesso la drastica diminuzione del cosiddetto “buco nell’ozono” che secondo le proiezioni sarà completamente chiuso entro il 2070.

Il Protocollo di Montreal mostra come un’impegno preso da tutte le nazioni e rispettato con scrupolo può invertire un processo apparentemente irreversibile, diventando un modello e uno dei trattati più efficaci mai entrati in vigore.

Sometimes I think about how the hole in the ozone layer was such a huge deal when I was a kid. I remember hearing about it all the time in the 90s and early aughts, but today we don't hear much about it.

We don't hear less about it now because people don't care - we hear less about it because governments around the world stopped being cautious, decided to listen to scientists, and took collective action.

The action taken was staggering and eliminated production and consumption of the chemicals that were causing the hole. They just... eliminated them over the course of 20ish years.

It's possible to make that kind of impact, the governments of the world are just cowards and are in the pockets of big oil.

I was thinking about it today and reread a great BBC article by Kira Walker from 2022. I've linked it below and copied a part of it that ai find really interesting and important to understanding how change is possible, it just needs to be big changes without compromise.

In 1987, the Montreal Protocol was adopted to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the chemicals which deplete it. To support compliance, the treaty recognised "common but differentiated responsibilities", staggering phase-out schedules for developed and developing countries and establishing a multilateral fund to provide financial and technical assistance to help developing countries meet their obligations. During the 1990s and early-2000s, the production and consumption of CFCs was brought to a halt. By 2009, 98% of the chemicals agreed to in the treaty had been phased out. Six amendments — which the treaty allows when scientific evidence shows further action is needed — have led to ever-tightening restrictions on substances introduced to replace CFCs, such as hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). While good for the ozone layer, these replacements turned out to be bad for the climate. The global warming potential of the most commonly used HCFC, for example, is almost 2,000 times stronger than carbon dioxide. The treaty's climate benefits have been a positive side effect. In 2010, emissions reductions due to the Montreal Protocol were between 9.7 to 12.5 gigatons of CO2 equivalent, approximately five to six times more than the target of the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty adopted in 1997 that aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The 2016 adoption of the Kigali Amendment, which will limit the use of HFCs, will help avoid up to 0.5 C of global warming by 2100. Earth’s Ozone Layer is on the Mend! Humans Have Managed to Turn Back the Clock on Ozone Destruction.

For decades, the Earth’s ozone layer, which protects life on our planet from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, has taken a beating from common chemicals used in everything from refrigerants to hairspray. But now the holes in the ozone layer are diminishing, thanks to a decades-long global effort to repair it, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed yesterday.

Scientists first discovered a gaping hole over the Antarctic in 1985. A couple years later, countries around the world adopted the Montreal Protocol, a global effort to phase out “ozone-depleting substances.” And now, thanks to that work, scientists expect the ozone layer to start looking more like its normal, healthy self in the coming decades. That lowers the risk of skin cancer and cataracts in people, as well as sun damage to plants and crops.

By around 2066, the WMO thinks the ozone layer will be back to what it was in 1980 over the Antarctic — before there was that gaping hole. Since ozone thinning has been the most severe there, other areas are expected to recover sooner. Up north over the Arctic, the ozone layer should look as it did in 1980 by 2045. For the rest of the world, that recovery is expected by 2040. A United Nations panel of experts presented those findings yesterday during the American Meteorological Society’s annual meeting. Of course, that progress is contingent on keeping policies in place that limit those pesky ozone-depleting substances.

Ozone molecules in the stratosphere absorb damaging UV-B radiation from the sun, keeping much of it from reaching us. That’s part of a process of constant ozone creation and destruction in our atmosphere. But when certain chemicals waft up there, that balance is thrown off — causing more ozone to be destroyed than created.

Some of the worst offenders are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) once used in refrigeration, air conditioning, aerosol sprays, and a host of other products. Then there are hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), developed as less potent replacements for CFCs that nevertheless still chewed through the ozone layer. Fortunately, by now, the Montreal Protocol has succeeded in phasing out about 99 percent of ozone-depleting substances.

The global agreement to protect the ozone layer is also beneficial for efforts to slow climate change. Ozone-depleting substances were replaced with another class of chemicals that happen to be potent greenhouse gases, called hydrofluorocarbons (or HFCs — pardon all the annoyingly similar acronyms). The Kigali Agreement was added to the Montreal Agreement in 2016 to limit those planet-heating chemicals. Axing HFCs globally is expected to reduce global warming significantly — up to half a degree Celsius by 2100. For context, the world has already warmed by about 1.2 degrees Celsius since the preindustrial era — exacerbating many of the extreme weather disasters we live with today.

But there is a climate caveat with the WMO’s good news. The panel of experts warns that “geoengineering” — intentionally manipulating the climate and / or atmosphere to undo some of the damage we’ve done by burning fossil fuels — could potentially take its own toll on the ozone layer. They’re particularly concerned about a tactic called stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI).

Proponents think that tactic could help cool the planet because the aerosols might reflect some sunlight back into space. But SAI “comes with significant risks and can cause unintended consequences,” according to a recent WMO-backed report. And some climate experts have already sounded alarm bells over one startup’s recent attempted release of reflective sulfur particles in the stratosphere.

Nevertheless, the phaseout of ozone-depleting chemicals is held up as an example of what people can accomplish when they tackle a global environmental crisis together. “Ozone action sets a precedent for climate action. Our success in phasing out ozone-eating chemicals shows us what can and must be done — as a matter of urgency — to transition away from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gases and so limit temperature increase,” WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said in a statement yesterday.

Os grandes corruptores vivem a nos enganar para manterem sua supremacia. Todo dia, aparecem medos criados por eles para manter as massas em rédea curta, dócil, trancafiadas em si mesmas. Eis algumas dessas sandices ou pilantragens que enfiam goela abaixo da humanidade e a maioria dela já aceitou ou continua a aceitar e a defender com tudo. Vejam só:

O "climagate": questiono desde o "aquecimento global" (cujas temperaturas negativas quebraram recordes este ano, chegando na Antártida a -93ºC) até o "buraco" na camada de ozônio (que os "especialistas" afirmam ter sido causado pelo dióxido de carbono, CFC e pum de vaca e que está sobre a Antártida, sem se importarem que é no hemisfério norte que o CO² e o CFC são muito mais produzidos). Daí, vêm os "Fantásticos" da vida e "documerdários" em geral mostrando imagens de pinguins, focas e ursos polares sofrendo, icebergs derretendo e geleiras se esboroando, como se fossem as cataclísmicas provas do aumento da temperatura mundial. E o povinho acredita sem pestanejar.

- As "gripes suína e aviária": Nenhuma doença deve ser desdenhada, mas o que fizeram com relação a essas duas é crime inafiançável! Criaram um estado de pânico em cima de duas gripes que, juntas, causaram algumas dezenas de milhares de mortes em um ano. Não é pouco, mas as gripes sazonais chegam a causar mais de 500 mil mortes por ano. Devido à propaganda massiva mundial, os governos da maioria dos países se viram compelidos a comprar imensas quantidades de um lixo chamado "Tamiflu", do "eminente sem vergonha" Donald Rumsfeld, que causava fortes efeitos colaterais como enxaqueca, calafrios e narcolepsia.  Resultado: milhões de dólares em vacinas foram para o lixo, visto que não foram utilizadas. Porém, já estavam devidamente pagas, lógico! Vejam só a baderna:

"A Suíça, que tem uma população de 7,7 milhões de habitantes, encomendou 13 milhões de doses de vacina, distribuiu apenas 3 milhões para consumo e apenas 13% a 15% destes foram usados. A França anunciou que cancelará a compra de 50 milhões das 94 milhões de doses que havia encomendado. Berlim começou a negociar com a GSK um corte de metade das 50 milhões de doses da vacina Pandemrix encomendadas. A Holanda anunciou em novembro de 2009 que iria vender 19 milhões das 34 milhões de doses encomendadas. A Espanha tenta devolver vacinas não utilizadas, argumentando que seus contratos com a Novartis (22 milhões de doses), a GSK (14,7 milhões) e a Sanofi-Aventis (400 mil) incluem cláusulas que permitem a devolução de excedentes."

E esta: "O banco JP Morgan, presente em Wall Street, estimava que, principalmente graças ao alerta de pandemia declarado pela OMS, os grandes industriais farmacêuticos (...) podiam acumular entre 8,5 e 10 bilhões de dólares de lucro." 

E a cereja do bolo: "A Ministra da Saúde dos EUA, Kathleen Sebelius assinou um decreto que garante a total imunidade jurídica para os fabricantes de vacinas contra a gripe suína em todos os processos criminais que possam se originar de qualquer ligação da nova vacina contra esta gripe."

No Afeganistão, foi para garantir a retomada da produção de papoula que o Talibã havia implodido ao tomar o poder em 2000; no Iraque e na Líbia, para garantir petróleo 'free' aos supremacistas; contra Egito, Síria (atualmente) e Irã (futuramente), para colocar seus títeres governando e garantir livre acesso. Creio que uma grande prova da pilantragem dos grandes corruptores e sua podre grande mídia foi o que diziam do Ahmadinejad, ex-presidente do Irã, que era chamado de "Hitler do século XXI" e por todos os lugares "democráticos" do mundo onde passava, ele era malquisto e mil "protestos" aconteciam. Foi só ele deixar o poder (após dois mandatos ELEITOS democraticamente) para tudo sumir ao vento. Há mais de ano, nem uma notícia rascante ou suave sobre o "ex-Hitler". O "demônio da vez" é o presidente da Síria Bashar Al Assad. E a massa anencéfala, anestesiada e alienada abençoa e agradece por todo o esforço da ONU et caterva em protegê-la.

Outras besteiras, erros não admitidos ou exageros são avoengos: a ida do homem à lua, a indústria do holocausto, as teorias da evolução, da relatividade, quântica, heliocêntrica,... até a construção das pirâmides pelo ser humano. Cada um de nós poderia ver no dia a dia tantas excrescências se não se deixasse levar pelo tsunami de nulidades e barulheira incessante que os grandes corruptores regurgitam em nós diuturnamente. Comodisticamente, seguem a correnteza ou seus boiadeiros. E assim, de enganação em enganação, o povinho se afunda mais no lodo criado dos malditos dominadores.

O advento da internet aumentou consideravelmente a capacidade dos supremacistas de enganarem as pessoas com mil hipnoses de entretenimentos e falsas informações. Porém, abriu um belo flanco para aqueles que procuram espaço para tentar expor o centro nervoso desses nefastos, suas falcatruas e podridões, além de permitir o acesso a milhões de informações sadias para quem quer de fato se informar, aprender e contestar. Por enquanto, a única maneira dos grandes corruptores minimizarem as ações e estragos desses "chatos" foi criar uma enorme equipe que chamo de "VERVI" (Vermes Virtuais) que grassam por esses sítios e blogs politicamente incorretos e fazem qualquer negócio para desmerecer, achincalhar, tergiversar, ofender e até ameaçar, no intuito de fazer o que sabem melhor: apodrecer as coisas. São risíveis.

Só é enganado hoje em dia quem se permite ser. Quero crer que "The times, they are a-changing". "Os tempos estão mudando".

A World Avoided.

What if the countries of the world had not agreed to phase out production of ozonedepleting substances?

Were scientists right about predictions of catastrophic ozone loss, which led to the signing of the Montreal Protocol?

To answer these questions, atmospheric scientists at NASA and other research centers decided to create a model using computers to simulate the atmosphere with and without restrictions on ODSs. In the “World Avoided” model, the emissions of CFCs and other ODSs were assumed to grow at a rate of 3% per year, about what they had been doing over the decade prior to the Montreal Protocol’s regulations.

Scientists used an earth system model that accounts for variations in solar energy, atmospheric chemical reactions, temperature changes and winds, and interactions between the stratosphere and troposphere, and let the calculations simulate the atmosphere from 1975 to 2065.

Then, they repeated the simulation, this time using actual and forecast ODS emissions. By the year 2020 in the “World Avoided” simulation, 17 percent of global ozone was destroyed, and an ozone hole formed each year over the Arctic as well as the Antarctic.

By 2040, the ozone hole—ozone levels less than 220 Dobson Units—was global. The UV Index in mid-latitude cities reached 15 around noon on a clear summer day (10 is considered extreme today). By the end of the simulation in 2065, global ozone dropped to less than 110 DU, a 67 percent drop from the 1970s.

Arctic ozone values remained between 50 DU and 100 DU the whole year around (down from 500 DU in 1960).

In the real world, emissions of ODSs ended in 1992. However, their abundance is only now beginning to decline because the chemicals stay in the atmosphere for 50 to 100 years. The peak abundance of CFCs in the atmosphere occurred around 2000, and has decreased by roughly 4 percent to date. Stratospheric ozone was depleted by 5 to 6 percent at middle latitudes, but has rebounded a little in recent years. The largest recorded Antarctic ozone hole was recorded in 2006, with slightly smaller holes since then. The “Real World” simulation predicts the recovery of the ozone layer to above 300 DU by the 2050-2060 time frame.
