The Stranger I know
read it on the AO3
by Mini_Goat
“Do you suppose any alternates who lost the other, traveled to a reality where the other survived and they ended up together? “That’s a lot of permutations Daniel, but it’s possible.” “A little pathetic though, doncha think?” Jack grumbled “You wouldn’t fall in love with an alternate me if something had happened to me?” Sam looked at Jack from her position tucked against him on the couch. “I’d be ok with it you know.” Sam told him and stroked his cheek gently and earned herself an ambiguous and somewhat ambivalent look. “No one could ever replace you Sam, not even someone almost entirely like you.” He told her, his heart in his eyes. ~Shai Ch 10.5 ~

4: Tell me about one of your abandoned WIPs. Why did you abandon it?
Last summer @twutch and I came up with an elaborate Wolf 359 Stargate AU where the W359 characters were part of the Stargate program, and I was going to specifically write the "Divide and Conquer" episode with the Zatarcs (sleeper agents, brain scanner that picks up repressed memories that they think are brainwashing, but it's really O'Neill and Carter's feelings for each other, iconic)
Eiffel is the guy in the control booth yelling "chevron locked!" Former SG-12 Captain Lovelace has recently gotten a Tok'ra symbiote to save her from cancer and left the gate team and her trusty lieutenant Minkowski behind. And then of course Kepler and Jacobi of the highly competent SG-5 team are the ones dealing with the repressed feelings in the chain of command problem. I elaborately outlined and got like 6K in but I ran out of steam and never finished it ;_; Maybe someday.
7: Were there any ideas you had for Trapdoor that you couldn’t make work? What were they?
When Dean goes on his anger vacation, he spends a month living in a motel in a little town in Minnesota and befriends the local bartender Darren, who is like a big burly Benny-type guy. I did write a scene where Darren takes him on a moonlight ride on his motorcycle down to the lake. In the end that was too gay, so I had Dean get in a bar fight instead.
9: Are there any fics you’d love to see but don’t want to write yourself? What are they?
I want Ketch to be in The Dean Winchester Beat Sheet
5: Share a snippet that you’re proud of from an upcoming fic/chapter.
Jack & Dean at the burger shack from Trapdoor Ch 2 (under the cut bc long)
Inside, Bubba's was cream-tiled with red accents, and an intoxicating smell of fries and grease. Families with little kids, teenage couples, and a few lone truckers waited in three long lines, in front of three red-visored young cashiers behind a high white counter. The low overhead lighting was long fluorescent tubes. One was flickering.
Dean rubbed his eye. Jack was reading the menu with his usual concentration.
“You hungry?”
“A little,” Jack admitted.
“The seal took it out of you, huh?”
“I guess so,” said Jack. “What’s a fish and chips?”
“Something you should not buy from a burger place in Missouri,” said Dean. “Just get a cheeseburger.”
“Okay.”
Dean took out his wallet and extracted a $20 bill. He handed it to Jack. His memory was doing the skipping-record thing again, and he thought maybe it was because he was hungry, or maybe because he needed a beer.
“Get me a double bacon cheeseburger and a large fry, and a beer.”
“Double bacon cheeseburger, large fry, beer,” Jack said.
“Yep,” said Dean, pulling a $20 bill out of his wallet.
“You already gave me money,” said Jack, holding up a $20 bill.
Dean frowned at it. “Right.” He pocketed his wallet. “Be right back.”
The bathroom was cramped and dingy, with a garbage can overflowing with used brown paper towels. Dean splashed some water on his face and considered his reflection in the glass. His eyes were bloodshot. He rubbed his eyes again and blinked at his reflection. No, it was still there in the glass. The afterimage. It nudged something in his memory, like déjà vu.
When he came back from the bathroom, Jack was milling around the waiting area. “I got everything except the beer,” Jack said, holding out the change for Dean.
“Why? Keep it,” Dean added, holding up a hand.
“They asked for my ID,” Jack said.
“But you have an ID,” said Dean.
“But it’s fake,” Jack protested.
“Of course it’s fake. That’s why we gave it to you, Jack,” said Dean impatiently. “Cause you’re a freaking toddler in a Disney Channel meatsuit.”
Jack looked offended by that. Dean took the receipt from his hand and checked the number. 96.
“86,” one of the girls behind the counter called out.
Dean sighed, annoyed.
The flickering light over the middle cash register was making him feel wired. He needed that beer, but he didn’t want to stand in the line.
“So you universe-hopped again, huh,” said Dean, putting his hands in his pockets and closing his eyes against the glare. “What was that like?”
“It was strange,” said Jack. “But, most things are.”
Dean raised his eyebrows. Fair enough.
“It was like flying. One second, we were in the compound in Apocalypse World. Next second, we were in the snow.”
“So teleporting doesn’t feel like anything to you, huh?” said Dean. “Cause to us, to humans, it feels like a juicer to the skull. Like—” He made an illustrative sucking noise with his cheeks.
Jack looked at him oddly. “No.”
Dean shrugged and closed his eyes again.
“88,” said the girl behind the counter.
“That’s us!” said someone behind them.
“How did you like hanging around with Cas piloting my meatsuit?” Dean asked.
“I liked it,” said Jack. “You were nicer.”
Dean cracked an eye open. “Ouch,” he said flatly. “...But I was Cas. I mean—I wasn’t me.”
“Castiel is nicer than you are,” said Jack.
“I guess that’s fair.”
Dean closed his eye again.
“Cas told me you were proud of me,” Jack added after a pause.
Dean frowned.
“96,” said the girl.
“That’s ours,” said Jack.
“I know,” said Dean.

Darkness and Dawn, ch. 3
Chapter 3 now up! Story is new and improved with actual plot. XD
AO3 link
Full chapter under the cut:
THREE DAYS LATER
Sam tugged on her dress jacket yet again as she stepped through the Gate room doors. After briefing them on what he was planning for the Kairellian visit, General Hammond had sent her and the Colonel off with orders to wear Class A's and to "try to be diplomatic"--the latter aimed pointedly at O'Neill. Daniel and Teal’c were due back any minute, along with the Kairellian’s commander and her entourage.
Behind Sam, the blast doors opened again, admitting one Jack O'Neill, hair mostly tamed. Not that it was any surprise, but damn, the man cleaned up nice. And his shoulders in his dress blues--
She stopped that train of thought abruptly. God, even though she hadn’t been able to go on that stupid date, she couldn’t keep thinking this way. The Colonel had clearly gotten over his feelings ages ago, if he had ever had these particular feelings in the first place. That was clear enough after her return from the Prometheus, when she’d accidentally called him Jack. Excuse me? She winced as she remembered the annoyance in his voice.
Be friendly. Nothing more, nothing less, Sam told herself. She could talk to the Colonel--in fact, she could even be his friend. She just couldn’t go thinking about his shoulders. Or any other part of him.
God, Carter was the only woman who wore dress blues as well as she wore an evening gown. Jack stole a glance at her out of the corner of his eye as he came to stand beside her. For a moment, he felt an insane flutter in his stomach and had the sudden urge to double-check that he’d buttoned his shirt correctly.
Why do you care if she thinks you're a slob? his inner voice groused at him. You’re just her old, grumpy CO, Jack. Have been for seven years. She’s moved on--not that she ever confessed her feelings in the first place. She’s not gonna notice you, not in the way you’re hoping. But despite his thoughts, his heart beat just a little bit faster when turned to him. Was that a hint of appreciation in her blue eyes?
Keep dreaming, Jack, his inner voice replied sarcastically.
"I took the liberty of putting the yoyo I found in the briefing room in your locker, sir."
Despite his somber inner thoughts, the banter came naturally. "What! Carter, you know that yoyo lives in the briefing room!"
Carter put on her best innocent look, and he was mesmerized by the mischievous sparkle that seemed to be complemented by her sky-blue shirt. "Why would you need a yoyo in the briefing room, sir?”
He mock-glared at her. Carter smirked.
And that was exactly why he couldn’t move on. Carter was brilliant, drop-dead gorgeous, had a secret rebellious streak, and knew exactly how to wind him up without ever stepping a foot into the territory of insubordination. She was perfect.
And he was a hopeless old sap. Jack shoved those thoughts into the back of his head and searched for something else to think about.
“So, tell me again why we have to meet these Krillans?”
“Kairellians. And Daniel and Teal’c have been with SG-9 the past two days negotiating with them. They have ring transporters, and they’re willing to share. In fact, they’ve been remarkably interested in trade given how advanced their technology is in comparison to ours.”
Jack raised his eyebrows. “Oh? What’s the catch?”
The Stargate began to spin, and General Hammond entered the Gate room.
“According to Daniel, they're having a bit of trouble smoothing out the details of the trade agreement,” Carter said as they lined up at the base of the ramp. “We’re hoping a visit to Earth might help address that.”
The ‘Gate kawooshed outward in a cascade of blue, and then SG-9 plus Teal’c and Daniel stepped through the blue puddle, followed by a group of six humans dressed in an array of satin tops and black pants.
Daniel smiled and gestured to the shorter woman at the front of the group, who was clad in a satin purple shirt secured by a copper sash of the same material. “General Hammond, this is Commander Minerva Hallis of Kairellian Central Transport. Commander Hallis, General George Hammond, commander of the SGC.”
Commander Hallis smiled. With dark, piercing eyes, black hair streaked with white, and skin bronzed by the sun, her strong presence belied the fact that she couldn’t have been over 5”4’. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, General Hammond.”
“Likewise, Commander. I’d like you to meet my second-in-command, Colonel Jack O’Neill. Colonel, why don’t you show them to their quarters, and then we can begin discussions in the briefing room?”
Jack embellished the trees behind the lake in his drawing, thoroughly bored. He’d tried to listen. He really had. He liked Commander Hallis--she was a no-nonsense woman who seemed as keen to fight the Goa’uld as they were. But her, Daniel, and Hammond had been discussing the same details of the treaty for going on two hours, and they weren’t getting anywhere. Jack would feel worse, but Carter and Teal’c looked just as bored as he was--they just weren’t entertaining themselves by doodling on their notepads.
Across from him, Daniel was still talking, gesticulating with his hands. "...have been from offworld archaeological digs. To be completely honest, I'm not sure what you need from us, Commander. Your technology is far ahead of anything we have."
Commander Hallis smiled grimly. "Daniel. As you are well aware, any allies in the fight against the Goa'uld are priceless. But even setting that aside, I will remind you that we only have transporter technology because we were able to copy it from ring transporters left behind centuries ago by those Goa’uld who used to enslave us. Many of our technologies were similarly obtained. Your people seem to be quite resourceful and innovative. I am sure your world has something to offer. Perhaps something that we have never thought to build--things we of which have no knowledge."
She turned to the officers seated at the table. "Daniel tells me that many of your world's advancements are used in your military. What unique technology does your Air Force have?"
Jack jerked his eyes up from his doodling and shifted in his seat. "Well, we're the Air Force. So, airplanes. Fighter jets."
Hallis blinked. "I'm sorry, I'm unfamiliar with the term. Airplanes?"
Daniel broke in. "Air transportation."
She tilted her head. "But we have established you do not have ring transportation."
"No, not beaming technology. More like your, ah, coaches and rail cars--except through the skies."
Hallis’ young science counselor, Ayadra, sat forward. She’d been relatively quiet so far, leaving her commander to do the talking, but now her eyes sparkled with interest. "Fascinating. We've considered such a thing, of course, having seen the Goa'uld death gliders. But our research stalled. Transportation has never been a primary research area of ours, what with the rings and all. What are these...airplanes...used for?"
Jack and Sam exchanged a glance. No airplanes?!
"Well, in general, we use them for faster transportation since we don't have ring transportation, as you mentioned. In the Air Force, as a military organization, we specialize in aerial defense,” Hammond explained.
"That would be helpful indeed--a fleet of vehicles capable of stopping Goa'uld death gliders as they descend through the sky," Hallis said gravely. "This would be an excellent item for trade, if you are willing to share this technology."
Hammond nodded. “We’d be happy to share some aircraft blueprints with you.” He stood. "As a matter of fact, since you’re so interested, how 'bout a demonstration?"
And he couldn't help but smile when his two best officers turned to him with identical pleading looks in their eyes.
"Colonel O'Neill, Major Carter, yes, permission granted. I'll call ahead to Peterson."

...And that's that, save for final editing tweaks here and there.
Over 240,000 words, 36 chapters, 26 months start to finish.
I did it.
Wow.
I'm feeling kinda giddy. Or maybe I just need lunch.
(What follows is essentially the Author's Afterward in the next chapter from the posted story, but the sentiment still applies here.)
To the readers who have made it this far you have my most sincere thanks for indulging me in this OC-inclusive, canon-divergent, three-way crossover AU. This has truly been a labor of love, for the fantastic shows and their inspiring settings and characters that have been a part of my life for so long, as well as the entire sci-fi genre, both literary and on screen. The best thing about the Stargate fandom is the extensive scope of the series, and how it can allow for so many different approaches in an entertaining mashup of ancient mythology and science fiction, served with intelligence, humor, and heart. I hope that I've been able to convey some of that in my own fashion and allowed it to lighten your own lives.
Have you ever had inspiration come to you in a dream? The idea for the whole story's been in my mind as bits and pieces for the past twenty years (!!) and I'm glad I finally had the time, drive and wherewithal to start translating the images in my mind into words. And that I felt free enough to go as big and epic as it played out in my imagination. I'm also glad it's taken me this long to do so, since I'm not sure I would've been able to write the same story without the maturity and added experience that comes from just plain living.
To be honest I never expected my modest AU would turn out to be so big a project. The story's been my lifeline to sanity in these very trying times for our world, as I suspect writing and reading fanfic has been for you, dear readers. Long live fan fiction and all who enjoy it!
This is the end of this story, but not of the AU. There's plenty of room for more adventures, multichapters, one-shots and vignettes alike. And not only by myself.
I'm opening it up to anyone who wishes to play in my sandbox if inspired. Additions, remixes or creations of any kind are welcome, so long as due credit is given. Have fun, give a nod in my direction (or an "Inspired by" link on AO3), and please let me know in the comments there what you've done. Any point in the timeline listed is fair game so feel free to expand upon anything- John and Rodney's relationship in Alpha Base and Atlantis, Sam and Jack's or Mac and Janet's- even future fics are welcome featuring the next generation(s). In fact, any of my original characters listed in Ch. 2 of Timeline and Who's Who in Ad Astra and original concepts in A Linguist's Guide to New Earth can be used, with credit of course. Or add your own, the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned!
If there's interest I'll create a collection on AO3 called Stargate: The New Earth Chronicles and open it to any rating or pairing- or crossover, if you think it can fit. All I ask is to keep it in the same optimistic spirit of soft apocalypse with a glimmer of hope, because now more than ever we need those happy endings.
Okay, time for me to give credit where it's rightfully due.
None of this would've come to pass in the first place if not for a certain actor and the two leading roles he portrayed so brilliantly. So thanks first and foremost to Richard Dean Anderson for introducing me to the original Angus MacGyver and later on Jack (Two L's) O'Neill, sides of the same coin as far as I'm concerned. The inspiration for my OC Rebecca Grahme came out of a desire to give both of them more family, and a concrete reason for doing what they do.
Thanks also to Michael Shanks for his version of Daniel Jackson, the first character on TV I could truly relate to, and proof that even glasses-wearing geeks (like myself) can be heroes. Indeed (to quote Teal'c) my admiration for everyone in both series- cast and crew alike- knows no bounds, for bringing to life a truly epic universe and giving it heart and wit, adventure and excitement. They are the reason why I'm still a fan after all these years.
I carry a warm fondness in my heart for the original MacGyver and the invaluable lessons he taught me about applied nonviolence, seeking creative solutions to problems and the willingness to do the right thing and stand up for others in the face of overwhelming odds. Those are values I still admire and try to emulate even today.
Many thanks goes to Sourlander and her excellent Loyalties series, for letting me incorporate Dr. Alex Lorne and her children Nora, Grace and Caleb into my 'verse. More adventures with Evan and Alex and family are welcome from you anytime.
As stated earlier this epic story is a love letter to the sci-fi genre I've been reading all my life, which taught me to think big when it comes to worldbuilding. Story inspiration comes from far and wide, particularly tales of space colonies both failed and successful, accidental and planned: Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover Landfall, Anne McCaffrey's Dragonsdawn, Jack L. Chalker's The Birth of Flux & Anchor, and the anthology Star Colonies (Martin H. Greenburg and John Heffers, eds.). Ursula LeGuin's Ekumen in her Hainish Cycle series is the model for the Stargate Commonwealth. Other elements come from the Cyteen trilogy by C.J. Cherryh (council government) and the alternate history anthologies What Might Have Been Vol. I & II, edited by Gregory Benford and Martin H. Greenburg (Ascended Daniel and Oma Desala's discussion).
Inspiration for elements of Atlantis Colony in particular comes from some incredible SGA fanworks on AO3: Speranza's Written by the Victors, LtLJ's Retrograde and Retrograde Extras series, ArwenLune's Rock Happy 'verse and Atlantis Program for Essential Skills Training, Three Fates by auburn and eretria, Wild Card by GillianInOz, Domenika Marzione (domarzione)'s version of Atlantis with its extensive cast of OCs, and The Body Holographic by Leah (Taste_is_Sweet) and springwoof. All are absolutely fabulous and mind-blowing, I cannot recommend them enough.
Once again my profound thanks to you, dear readers, for taking a chance on this modest AU. I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I did writing it. Feedback is greatly appreciated, and will always be. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Peace to you all. May we treat each other kindly and with respect, and strive together to create a better future for everyone's sake.
Take care,
Tanista
