Mary loves being hugged from behind. Your arms are wrapped securely around her waist, your chin resting on the top of her head. It’s one of the only times she’ll let herself completely and utterly relax. Melting into you after a stressful day. She’s sure she’ll spontaneously combust if you pull her in tighter and place a kiss on her head. She wants to stay like that, with you, forever. She never stops thinking about you. She loves you in a way she'll never understand. And she's okay with that.

Welcome back for another comparison of the original Japanese text against the official English translations! We’ll also be doing a bit of analysis too.
This month, there were some oddities. Mostly word choices, tone, and connotations, though there is one line that is entirely mistranslated.
This one will be a bit longer, so let’s get into it.
Right away, something that leapt out to me is that the naming convention for this chapter is entirely different from every other chapter in the series. Kakegurui has a formula for its chapters titles, which is “___の女,” which turns into “____ Woman,” or, because Yen Press insists on using “girl” instead of “woman,” it becomes “____ Girl.” That’s not the case here. The title is literally, unambiguously, and simply: 姉妹 / Sisters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the first few pages, things are accurate in terms of content, but Kirari’s tone is...kind of off. She comes off sounding a little brattier than she actually is in Japanese. I’m willing to bet this is the translator’s way of trying to make her sound younger, but it doesn’t square, especially since the way younger Kirari speaks in Japanese tends to just be ever so slightly bubblier than how she speaks as a young woman: she’s a little bit more direct about how she says things, less mysterious. But, she still has a very feminine and polite way of speaking still. Put a pin that – we’ll touch on that a bit later.
Also, if we wanted to split hairs, we could talk about how on the second page, Kirari doesn’t do anything to indicate saying “Boy, that game...”
If you wanted to be closer to her original tone in Japanese, she said something more along the lines of “That game of Old Maid was a lot of fun, wasn’t it?” And, if you want to be hyper literal without any localization, she says, “That was a lot of fun, wasn’t it? That game of Old Maid!” But again, this is so minor it’s more or less negligible.
Tumblr media
Where her tone diverges a bit too much for comfort is when she’s recapping what their family members were up to during the game, and this is the bulk of where her bratty tone shows up.
In English, Kirari has the following to say about her relatives:
Did you see Rin’s face? The way he tries not to show any emotion is cute.
And Mira...Hee hee! She’s hilariously easy to read.
Miri and Miyo, they seem to think the game is childish. Like, we are kids, so I wish they would enjoy it honestly.
Sumika and Terano didn’t join in...I hope we play next time!
In Japanese, Kirari actually says this:
顔に出すまいとしているところがいじらしかったわね。 Did you see that look on Rin’s face? It was charming/lovable/sweet how he tried not to show it (his emotions) on his face, wasn’t it?
ミラは。。。フフ。 分かりやすすぎて面白い。 As for Mira...[giggle], she was too easy to read; it was funny.
三理と三欲は子どもっぽい遊びとバカにしていそうだったわね。子どもなんだから素直に楽しめばいいのに。 Miri and Miyo seemed to think it (the game) was childish and stupid/silly. They are children, though, so they should just have fun.
淑光と定楽乃は遠慮していたけれど。次は是非遊んでみたいわ。 Sumika and Terano were reserved/refrained from joining. I definitely want to play with them next time.
Tumblr media
So content-wise, it’s accurate, but tonally...there’s a little bit of iffy-ness, and that’s all I wanted to point out.
There’s also one more slight scuff right after that part that I want to touch on, because it starts to fill in some pieces about how Kirari and Ririka were raised.
In English, Kirari says: We all need time to play with people our age now and then, huh?
In Japanese, Kirari says: たまには同年代と気楽に遊ぶ時間か必要よね? Sometimes you just need to take it easy and play/have fun with people your own age, don’t you?
Tumblr media
Remember how I mentioned Kirari speaks very politely in general? This is almost certainly because of a few reasons, such as her being raised more or less as royalty, but more relevantly because of the line above: it implies Kirari and Ririka spent the majority of their childhood around adults, not playing or communicating with kids their own age.
As a fandom, we often joke that Kirari and Ririka communicate with their peers in bizarre ways, that they’re almost like space aliens who don’t know how to interact with other people in a “normal” way. And there are some overlapping assumptions we can make about why that is (being raised in a traditionalist household, being groomed to be a successful heir, being raised to be strong gamblers, etc.), but that line above is one of the first explicit, textual clues we get as to why they seem emotionally stunted in terms of how they relate to others: they spent their foundational years around stiff, traditionalist, aloof adults who were focused on grooming perfect heirs, not raising two young girls. Time spent with people their own age and just playing seems to have been a rare treat. It could explain why this particular game of Old Maid has been revisited so many times in the series: it was a rare occasion that all the Bami children got to spend time together.
I’d also like to point out how sad Kirari looks here, when she touches Ririka’s mask as if she wants to take it off, and Ririka pulls her hand away, leaving the mask in place.
Tumblr media
Kirari has cared about this — her sister’s own will— for a long time, it seems. Which leads me into the next scuffed translation that occurs on the page after this quiet moment between the twins.
In English, Kirari says: Well, see you next time...Ririka.
In Japanese, Kirari actually says: また今度ね、リリカ。 Another time, then, Ririka.
Tumblr media
This probably goes without saying, but the English doesn’t really make sense in context. It implies Kirari is leaving her to go somewhere else, whereas the Japanese makes much more sense: Kirari is accepting that Ririka isn’t willing to be open in that moment, and is assuring Ririka that there will be another opportunity to do so in the future.
Skipping forward a few pages, there’s something that got lost in translation just because of how nuanced Japanese is, and how the conjugation of the language can change depending on how polite or rude someone is being. When Ririka asked for sixes, she said so in a very brusque way!
The くれ Ririka uses here is commanding, not asking or requesting. It’s also very informal, and is cited as a way to tell someone to give you something that “shows mild disdain for the receiver.” She’s done playing nice, and she wants Kirari to know it.
Tumblr media
The next part is a few more pages in, and the translator added a bit more than I think they should have, including straight up adding a line so that Kirari gets her weird, distorted mean girl tone again. So I’m putting this here so you can compare the original Japanese to what it shakes out to when closely translated into English. I’ve bolded the offending lines in question.
In English, Kirari says: You know, Ririka...this feels so weird. Me, trying to guess your intentions. Me, trying to outfox you. It’s all so much fun, but...Reading minds...is something you try on people besides yourself. That’s who you are, Ririka. You’ve become such an “other” that I enjoy gambling with you now. The sun will set shortly.
In Japanese, Kirari actually says: ねリリカ不思議な気分だわ。貴女の意図を推測する私。貴女の裏をかこうとする私。それはとっても楽しいけれど。ねリリカ、ギャンブルに興ずる程に貴女が他者になってゆく。。。ー間もなく日も暮れる。
You know, Ririka, I feel strange. Me, guessing your intentions. Me, trying to outwit you. It’s so much fun, though...trying to read someone is an act done to other people. You know, Ririka, the more you gamble, the more you become someone else. The sun will set soon.
Tumblr media
Subtle changes in wording, but with big changes in tone and meaning...or just straight up a wrong sentence in the case of Kirari saying, “hey, now that you’re another person I actually like playing with you now,“ which is not what she says AT ALL.
A few pages alter, when Mary and Ririka reveal that Ririka’s will is to defeat Kirari, what they actually said gets sanitized a bit, and it’s a shame, because it helps support why Kirari is a little flustered on the following page.
In English, Ririka, Mary, and Kirari say: Ririka: You lost, you’re down. Mary: The hands are already around your neck. Ririka: And this... Mary: ...is Ririka’s will! Kirari: ...I see. Yes, I understand well enough now.
In Japanese, what Ririka, Mary, and Kirari actually said was: Ririka: 敗北即死 = Defeat, instant death Mary: 首に手をかけられている = There are hands around your neck. Ririka: これが = This is... Mary: リリカの意志だ!= ...Ririka’s will! Kirari: 。。。分かった。もう十分にわかったわ。= ...Okay / ...I see. I’ve seen enough / I understand enough.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I’d like to take a moment to point this out, which is something that I, along with quite a few others, have been pointing out for years at this point: Kirari’s goal this whole time, as far as Ririka was concerned, was to help Ririka unblend from her and become her own person. Whereas...in this moment, Ririka’s goal is to destroy her little sister. Poor Kirari! No wonder she seems a bit taken aback!
And this leads into our first ever glimpse into Kirari’s thoughts and feelings, direct and unfiltered, from her. The English translations do not do this part justice, in my opinion. The English translation focuses on Ririka and Kirari being one. And that’s mostly fine...but the Japanese touches briefly on how lonely Kirari feels.
It is 100% sad girl Rari hours in this Chili’s tonight, y’all.
I’m going to transcribe this whole section so you can get exactly what the original Japanese says during Kirari’s internal monologue during the final showdown.
In English, Kirari internally monologues the following across several pages: Me...and me. What is wrong with me being myself? I love myself. I always want to remain me. But there are two people here. We can’t remain one forever. We’ll be split apart, I’m sure. When will that moment arrive? How will we feel, at the end of it? I’ll stop being one someday. We will be sisters. You will be another person. You know, Ririka, if I could make it happen... If I could make it happen... I wish we could choose that of our own free will.
In Japanese, Kirari actually internally monologues the following across several pages: 私と私。
Me and I/me. What’s wrong with me being me? I love me. I always want to be me. But there are two of us here. I won’t be alone forever. We will surely be separated. When will it happen? I wonder how we will feel. When will I stop being one? We will be sisters. You will be another person. You know, Ririka, that’s what I hope for... Hopefully...it will be done by our will.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During our first glimpse into Kirari’s mind, we find that Kirari has been wishing and hoping , since she was a young child, that she and her sister could be two different people, that they didn’t have to be one, and that Kirari didn’t have to be so alone.
I’m very curious to see how their relationship evolves now that they have become fully unblended, and what Kirari’s victory means going forward in the election.
Anyway, if you’re still here, thanks for reading! I hope this clarified some parts of this very important chapter and that it enhances your enjoyment of the series.
In the meantime, I’ll keep chipping away at Kari translations. :)

Kirari is smiling in the first one!!!😭😭 I never noticed that until looking at these panels again while waiting for this month’s chapter! It’s like she’s smiling because Ririka is finally finding herself she’s so happy for her😭😭
Tumblr media
In the second one she looks “alright, now we’re getting serious, show me what you got, sis”😆

Do you think Ririka was watching Mary for a long time? Because she said that she was the one who made a promise with Kirari to fight alongside Mary in the election, but Ririka didn't really have her sense of self or her own will before the election started so maybe it was Kirari who made Ririka work with Mary since it's shown in the manga that Kirari cares for Ririka and wants someone to help her. And if Ririka was the one who made the promise that would mean she did have a will of some sort.
So far, there hasn’t really been any proof of Ririka interacting with Mary, or wishing to, before she approached her for the Election. Mary herself believes that Kirari was the one who pushed Ririka towards that promise, and not vice-versa:
Tumblr media
Here’s why I believe she’s right.
I know that there are people that believe that the one asking Saotome to join the Council in ch. 13 could have been Ririka disguised as Kirari, but I have a few reasons why I don’t buy this theory.
The first one, is that Kirari herself organized the Debt Collection Meeting, thus she knew perfectly well who would be sitting at that table. She knew the result she (and the Council) wanted — that is, reining in Kiwatari or Jabami — and she obtained it. The way Saotome acted might have been doubly appreciated exactly because it was a sort of extra to that wanted result. Kirari (or possible Ririka) admits that she did appreciate the way Saotome faced the situatiom.
Another reason why that could have been Kirari is the way she gets hantsy and closes the distance, just like she did with Terano, the way she presses her knee between hers, like she did with Sayaka, and most importantly, the way she says that she loves people that she can’t understand (like Terano, and Sayaka, again). Why would Ririka say this? Why would Ririka have this sort of fascination and attraction when she herself claims not to want anything for herself?
To all of this, we must add the fact that the author himself stated that he didn’t have a clear idea of what to do with Kirari’s character at first, so he might have switched things up in a second moment.
After the character developement she (and Ririka) have had since chapter 76, I do believe that Kirari herself asked Ririka to team up with Saotome because she knew just how much Saotome despises her, thus she’d have all the drive to try and bring her down. I do believe that Saotome and Ririka could cover each other’s weaknesses: Saotome’s strenght of character united to Ririka’s experience would make for the best gambling partners.
As you said, Kirari does care about her sister, so I think that she knew what she was doing when she pushed Ririka in Saotome’s direction, thus expecting her to grow into her own person — which is something that is happening, although Ririka claims not to have noticed it yet.
Kirari says that whoever wins the Election will also become Head of the Bami. Some people say that if Saotome becomes President Ririka will take the other role, but I don’t think Kirari would wish to keep her twin at the top, nor do I think Saotome herself would feel able to become the chief of such a clan. This is the only point that I’m unsure about at the moment, but I’m sure Ririka’s development in the next chapters will clear things up a bit.
TL;DR: there’s nothing in canon that tells us that Ririka’s interest in Mary was her own before being Kirari’s. When they made that promise, it wasn’t Ririka’s choice, but her sister’s. Ririka probably had no real reason to refuse her — and even if she did, her personality still hadn’t “split” from the other’s, so at that point she must have still shared Kirari’s desire to bring the Family down.

Welcome back for another comparison of the original Japanese text against the official English translations!
This month, there are only a few things that jumped out at me as odd or incorrect, so it should be a pretty quick one this time around.
So, let’s get cracking.
First, as I pointed out in the Lost in Translation for the first half of Ch. 88, the title of this chapter in English may be incorrect. For those of you that don’t want to click into that post, here’s that excerpt:
The actual title of Ch. 88 is 天地無用の女, which extremely literally translates to something like “Do-not-invert-heaven-and-earth woman.” This phrase, 天地無用 (tenchi muyou) is primarily used within the shipping and logistics industry in Japan, and is analogous to English’s “this side up” markings on packages. This is almost certainly how the translator at Yen Press got “Upright Girl;” in it’s usual context, that’s what 天地無用 means: this side up, keep upright, do not invert.
However, anyone who is familiar with the old “Tenchi Muyo!” anime or manga series likely knows that it can have another meaning: being in the way, being useless, and/or being of little importance. So, for part 1 of Ch. 88, a more accurate translation could very likely be “Unimportant Woman,” or, if we break the naming convention of the chapters a little bit, “A Woman of No Importance.”This makes sense as Mary is told she is “in the way” twice during this chapter.
I still stand by that translation over “Upright Girl,” though I will concede that the idea that Ririka, metaphorically speaking, shouldn’t be “inverted” or that she needs to be “kept upright” instead of, say, blended with Kirari, could be a reason to go with the “Upright Girl” title.
The most obvious moment that appeared to be turned into word salad in translation is when Ririka and Mary make their promise. This happens on neighboring pages, and this is the dialogue. I’ve bold italicized the parts that are particularly wrong.
The Mary’s English translation for these panels say: First panel: You want in? Uh, what? Look, don’t be ridiculous. We need to come up with a winning strategy... Second panel: This promise is going to be a “secret” just between you and me. Kirari Momobami plays no part in this, all right? If you join in, and wind up falling out...then I’m gonna drag you right back in!
What Mary actually says in Japanese is: First panel: 混ざる?何よソレ。無茶苦茶なこと言わないで。そんなことより勝っための作戦をー
Blend/Mix? What the hell is that? Don’t be absurd. I don’t care about that, I just want a plan to win...
Second panel: この約束は私とアンタ二人だけの「秘密」。そこに桃喰 綺羅莉いない。アンタが混ざっていなくなるというなら私が引き戻してやる!
This promise is a “secret” between you and me. Kirari Momobami is not involved in this. If you are going to get mixed up/become blended and disappear...I’ll pull you back out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should be pretty obvious what both Ririka and Mary were trying to say. Ririka talking about “mixing/blending” with Kirari was her trying to warn Mary that she might blend too far and forget herself for a moment. Mary is saying that they’ll make a promise (complete with a pinky swear!) that if Ririka blends too much with Kirari and loses herself, Mary will find a way to pull her out of their blended state. Seeing as how pulling from Ririka’s pile of votes (technically a shared pile of votes between them) unblends Ririka from Kirari, Mary achieves this goal.
That part above is the most egregious fumble this month, which, compared to other chapter releases, is pretty tame. I do have one more tiny bone to pick and an interesting detail that can’t be transferred 1:1 from Japanese to English.
First, another oddity in translation that, while not incorrect, does warp Ririka’s characterization a little bit. It has to do with just after Ririka breaks free of their blend, and informs Kirari that the remaining 99 votes are coming from her pile.
The the English translation for this part says: Kirari: ...I’m sorry? Mary Saotome has only one vote, doesn’t she? Where are the other ninety-nine coming from?
Ririka: Well, Kirari...I’ll show you. They’re right here.
Kirari: It’s an outside bet! A conditional vote handover!
What they actually say in Japanese is: Kirari: 。。。どういうことかしら。早乙女 芽亜里待ち票は1票でしょう?残り99票はどうから来たの?
Ririka: 。。。それはな、綺羅莉。こういうことだ。
Kirari: 外ウマによる票の条件付き譲渡!
Kirari: ...What does that mean, I wonder / ...I’m not sure I understand. Mary has one vote, correct? Where did the other 99 votes come from?
Ririka: ...From this, Kirari... They’re coming from here.
Kirari: A conditional transfer of votes from outside the game/an outside bet!

The English, again, is not necessarily wrong, but it is perhaps a little bit more confrontational or forceful than it’s portrayed in Japanese.
And now onto something we, as an English-speaking audience, missed out on because of nuances in Japanese that don’t have a direct equivalent in English.
It happens right after the events above, when Ririka reveals she kept a secret from Kirari, and Kirari being over-fucking-joyed that Ririka did so.
The the English translation for this part says: Ririka! You’ve been keeping a secret from me?
What it says in Japanese is: リリカ!貴方*。。。私に秘密を作るというの?
Ririka! Dear/Darling*...You’re keeping a secret from me?

*The version of “you” Kirari is using here, 貴方, with that specific kanji, can, contextually, mean “dear” or “darling” when used with people the speaker is familiar or affectionate towards. In fact, it’s the exact same “you” that Ririka directed at Mary when she was blended with Kirari in the first half of the chapter, though when she said it then, she was purposefully being condescending.

The excerpt I wrote explaining that is below:
*So the way Ririka is using 貴方 here is extremely condescending. The way she’s saying “dear” (貴方 is only used that way when affectionate and familiar with someone, typically) seems to be conveying multiple things at once, which is a linguistic property of how Japanese is structured that can sometimes be very difficult to convey in English. In this context 貴方 means two things at the same time: Ririka is saying “You” in a very rude, distant, and condescending way that implies she looks down on Mary. The other meaning is “dear/honey/darling/sweetheart” and is used when familiar with someone.
In contrast, the way Kirari is using it above, coupled with how visibly happy and excited she is, points to her being genuine instead of condescending, meaning that her line above could’ve been translated as: “Ririka, darling! You’re keeping a secret from me?”
That’s all I caught in this particular release.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading, and I’ll continue chipping away at Kari translations in between chapters! In fact, you can get at the translation for the Kari released alongside this chapter here.
See you next time! :)
