OC ASKS: NOT-SO-NICE EDITION

alone: How does your OC deal with loneliness? Have they ever been completely alone before? How do they act when there's no one around to see them?

well🧍‍♀️.... nuala has actually spent a lot of her life alone. after she was ostracised and essentially kicked out of her clan, she spent many years living alone between towns and cities and forests in the free marches - because of those years wandering, she became very accustomed to being alone. it actually brings her a lot of peace, or at least it used to. being so thoroughly surrounded by people for 2-3 years with the inquisition forced her to grow out of that habit, but after she loses her hand and disbands the inquisiton along with it, well. she finds herself slipping back into her old, solitary habits very very fast. it aches more than it ever used to, though.

break: What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest?

nuala keeps a very tight lid on her emotions and doesn't like showing vulnerability to others, so if she ever does break down it's always in private. she tends to get angry more than anything, and is prone to shoving everything off her desk, to crying angry tears. the most anyone will ever usually see of that though is her being more curt than normal, or maybe getting a bit too intense in the archery range. it's why her yelling at the advisors towards the end of trespasser takes them all so aback.

desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?

freedom for the people, a better future for the people, for the people to not be so chained by their past. it's why she was kicked out of her clan (for speaking against the dalish ways so vehemently), and it's what she tries to put her power as inquisitor towards (elevating briala, taking the well's knowledge to keep it in elven hands, supporting elven power as much as she can). it's why, after her arm's fizzled to nothing and bull has all-but carried her back to the winter palace, the only emotion she can really settle with is rage (because it's all she's ever wanted, how could he just leave her behind).

future: What's the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it's a possibility?

oh boy. one of the worst would be her dying in obscurity, her not being remembered for all she'd done. she fought so hard for so long and sacrificed so much, so for history to wipe her away into a corner to be forgotten would be more than an insult. beyond that, i think another possible worst future is her being so blinded by her love for solas that it destroys her, or him, or them both, and that neither of them actually manage to save / elevate the elven people like they'd initially set out to do.

guilt: What is your OC guilty about? How do they handle their guilt? Do they try to avoid guilt, or do they accept it?

part of nuala feels guilty that she didn't make more of an effort with the inner circle, that she didn't try to cultivate more friendships. she had iron bull, thom, dorian and leliana, but beyond that ... all her other relationships were tense or downright bad. i think a small part of her also feels guilty for disappearing into the wilderness barely a day after disbanding the inquisition. the only person she properly says goodbye to is leliana, and dorian (when he calls in a panic over the sending crystal, but she's already two hours gone).

i’ve been thinking about nuala’s relationship with the inner circle, and currently it’s sitting like this:

dislikes cass and viv, and will butt heads with them more often than not. cullen usually falls in here too.

neutral towards sera and cole.

respects josie and varric, and can hold friendly conversation with them, but they aren’t super close either.

friends with dorian and leliana, although it takes a bit with both of them. they become closer friends as the game progresses, and dorian eventually becomes a party member of nuala’s after solas leaves (rip).

party members and close friends with blackwall and iron bull. spends the most time with them out in the field.

nuala was already a fairly cold and distant person before becoming inquisitor, with at least a dozen different masks on rotation depending on the situation, but being betrayed so completely by solas ruined any chance she may have had at growing out of her bad habits

It had been raining for three days. The once white of Nuala’s socks was stained russet with mud, the hem of her pants now as ruined as her boots as she sat huddled in her makeshift shelter. Branches and shrivelled leaves did little against the downpour, but she had done her best. There was little she could do but that, these days. The grime had settled so deep in her chest she wasn’t sure she would ever manage to clean it out.

Thunder ravaged the clouds, made her shelter and bones shake. Distantly, lightening tore a tree into splinters.

She blinked. Wiped at a strand of white hair that had fallen in her eyes.

There was a black wolf standing in the gloom.

Nuala didn’t flinch like she might have months ago, when her hand was still attached to her arm by sickly green tendons and the world was still healing from poorly cauterised wounds. The wolf stood frozen between the arch of two trees, dark fur melting into the shadows around it and disappearing into the storm-ridden night. Nuala stared at the glow of its eyes through the rain. Her hand itched even though it was a shrivelled pile of ash back in Orlais.

He hadn’t come to her in a while. Or at least, her subconscious wasn’t as hyperaware of the wolves that haunted her every sleeping and waking moment as it once was. She was sure it was just a play of the mind and that he would not waste so many precious hours stalking her on her lonesome quest. Her ozone-poisoned heart held onto what shreds remained of her optimism anyway.

Nuala did not move, hardly breathed, until the wolf broke eye contact. Her little, tired game.

A rush of rain rattled through her shelter, sleet lashing at her face. She tugged at the makeshift prosthetic she’d bargained for just one week prior, the hedge witch not inclined to help an aimless elf until Nuala had pressed the glint of her dagger to the woman’s throat and spoken as if she was the god and not his discarded plaything, left to rot in the wilderness. The wood of the prosthetic was practical but sodden after the continuous rain. A small weed had started growing from the inside of her manufactured wrist.

The wolf lingered on the outskirts of her vision for the rest of the night, a dark silhouette in the corner of her eye. Rain continued to beat at her shelter well into the morning, leaving Nuala’s hair a ruined mess where it hung limply in her messy braid. When she eventually began back on her journey north, frustrated but not slowed by the downpour, the wolf followed at her heel.

❌ what kind of things would end any relationship for them? is there a history behind why these things bother them? could they ever take someone back despite this? if so or if not, why?

lyssa - i feel like once lyssa’s in a relationship there’s not a lot that would make her end one, mostly because even Getting to the stage of being with someone takes so much time and trust. she doesn’t let people in easily, so once they’re there it’s hard to get rid of them adhfsdgjf. if she was seriously betrayed by someone it would probably sever things though.

nuala - anyone speaking down to her or treating her like a little girl instead of the powerful woman she is would nuala furious and likely to end a relationship. also betraying or not being honest about your intentions with her (she understands lying about other things, but using her specifically for things is a Big No). 

💋 how affectionate are they with their friends? their family? their romantic partner(s) (if they have any)? are they more physical or emotional when it comes to displaying their affection? why?

lyssa - as a general rule lyssa isn’t into physical affection in public, and can appear a bit distant (her resting bitch face doesn’t help). in private though she loves sharing a physical space with someone, and becomes a bit more touchy. she will very occasionally grab bucky’s hand though, and he always has to fight back a small smile when she does!! with friends it’s the same, although she uses a lot of dry humour and teasing around her close friends. with very close friends, she might even let herself Hug them (shock horror).

nuala - nuala likes to keep an aloof, controlled exterior even around her friends and loved ones, and she’s good at keeping it up most of the time. she Will become a blushing mess the second she stops talking to her crush though, but only once she’s out of visible range and there’s no chance of being spotted. with friends she’s similar to lyssa in that her humour tends to slip through more but she’s also not afraid to be physically affectionate with friends - lightly punching them on the shoulder, patting them on the back, hugs, etc. 

🧡 who is your oc’s favourite person? why is this person the top of their list and have they actually met them (an idol or rolemodel or celeb can be someone’s favourite after all!).

lyssa - probably bucky, just because he’s her favourite to spend time with. runners up include livia (💜), wanda, natasha and steve.

nuala - solas, for the romance and discussion, or dorian, because he’s her best friend. 

📀 how easy is it to shock your oc? to confuse them? to lie to them, to manipulate them? how are they with feelings of trust? can your oc be trusted?

lyssa - she doesn’t trust easily and has Seen Some Shit, so shocking or getting one up on lyssa is difficult to say the least. she’s good at reading people and generally figuring out what they’re about, so she tends to know what’s happening before you do.

nuala - she likes to think that she’s always been good at reading people and figuring out their intentions, but solas changes that. she was always a little mistrustful, but it becomes so much worse from trespasser onwards. she’s expecting the worst at any given moment.

🍋 does your oc act petty and jealous easily? what sort of things make them feel like this and do they experience guilt for getting so worked up? how do they deal with these emotions when they get them? if your oc doesn’t feel like this often, why not?

lyssa - not really. lyssa can be a bit possessive over her belongings since she never had many growing up, but with people? not so much. she’s never really been the jealous type either.

nuala - nah, nuala’s too arrogant to feel jealous lmao.

i should have expected this afhsdfh!! lyssa's route starts with her sending barbs and her dry humour at you (as a way to keep some distance mostly) until she loses the energy to be snarky or bitchy, so then you're just sitting together in silence until she quietly admits that she enjoys your company. very slow and tentative and learning how to trust, because she doesn't have a great track record with relationships of any kind (see: backstory LOL). even once you're in a relationship she's not super touchy or affectionate in public, but she Will become insanely protective of you and is very attuned to your emotions (she knows if youve had a bad day the Second you walk in the door).

on the other hand, nuala's route is all about sharing interests and books and cute museum dates!!! you dont know this because she's good at keeping herself composed but she blushes in private after you do anything cute for her!! but there's an undercurrent of you not knowing if you've ever seen the Real nuala because she always keeps up ten thousand walls even when doing romantic things with you. it takes a lot of pushing on your end to get her to relax, but even then nuala struggles to let others in and always keeps some distance from you - it probably drives a wedge between you in the end, honestly, because nuala's fatal flaw is that she's always refuses to rely on others in the very end.

ASK ME ABOUT MY OCS!

1. what’s the one thing they would save in a fire?

lyssa — herself, or any of her loved ones. lyssa has never been a very sentimental person and doesn't feel very attached to her physical belongings (not that she has many to begin with). she might save some of her more expensive clothes i guess.

nuala — her books! she loves reading and has a small collection of ancient tomes and the like in her quarters, and would die before they got burned up (most of them are first editions).

3. how would they fare in a zombie apocalypse?

lyssa — amazing. lyssa is well practiced at surviving, and even if reverting back to old habits would be hard at first, she'd fall into a routine quickly. she might get roped into helping a resistance of sorts though.

nuala — quite well too. she'd disappear, isolate herself in nature somewhere far enough away from civilisation that no one (alive or undead) would ever find her. she spent years alone in the wilderness in her late teens, and so is used to sustaining herself in the wilds alone. it would be a lonely, quiet existence though.

19. how’s their financial situation?

lyssa — pretty good. i'm not sure if superheroes get paid (?) but i always imagine her being quite comfortable financially.

nuala — money has always been of little consequence to nuala, even if she does amass quite a substantial amount of wealth as inquisitor. she is quite possibly one of the richest people in thedas by the time of corypheus' defeat, but nuala has never carried herself as snobby or arrogant (about money, at least).

28. who, if anyone, do they dislike most?

lyssa — she always had a love-hate relationship with most of her dark elven peers, and was never very fond of any of them. she also dislikes tony, but that's out of spite more than anything.

nuala — cole, because he makes her Very uncomfortable (not because he's a spirit, but because he has a tendency to voice her thoughts when she'd rather them remain hidden). also cullen. ironically, solas is now on her list.

48. are they a good kisser?

lyssa — yeah!

nuala — not really. she tends to be a little too rough, a little too sharp, but she's not that bad.

58. if they could change one thing about their life, what would it be?

lyssa — part of her wishes she’d never been taken by malekith and that she could have been raised by her parents in peace, but then she’d be an entirely different person to who she is now and that’s an .... uncomfortable thought for lyssa. she likes who she’s become, all things considered. 

nuala — she wishes she could’ve learnt the truth (or at least, solas’ truth) about the dalish sooner, wishes she could’ve convinced him to stop and wait for her to catch up, wishes he would’ve given her a chance to voice her opinion before he disappeared through that eluvian. she wishes, above all, that she could’ve done more with her reign as inquisitor besides being propped up by other people.
