Today on P3R, we’re technically covering three play sessions, because I didn’t have time to make a post before Katsucon. But a lot of that was Tartarus, so it’s not actually too much. ^_^

(Katsu pictures are coming at some point.)

Anyway, we’re off to Tartarus to train some and play with the new special attacks we got last time we were here! And get a little higher while we’re at it, so, let’s g--

It’s not the boss version, so it’s fine, but I didn’t think things showed up as enemies until after they were bosses???

The other reason we were in Tartarus was to get black quartz to trade to the guy in Escapade for a discount on fashion glasses. (Is there somewhere that will buy my gemstones? The police station won’t, and I get why, but like… I just have these.)

She looks very nice in those, actually.

Back at school, we’re still having a time. Odagiri of the student council has moved on to accusing the vice president over this one cigarette. And is not being diplomatic about it.

I’m gonna mess up his social link just because I keep not agreeing with him on these things. X’’’D

I’ve also met Keisuke Hiraga of the art club, who is a very good artist, but his dad is a doctor, so he’s also… Very Fussy. XDDDD

I can now hang out with my friends in the dorm, and I still think it’s weird that it calls them social links when I can’t start any of the girls’ links yet, and I can’t actually link with Junpei and Akihiko. I had tea with Mitsuru, though, and watched DVDs with Yukari, read manga with Junpei, and cooked with Akihiko. It’s nice! And some of them do give me stat boosts and items, so that’s cool.

I’m smooth now~

...well, shit. Here we go.

Minato’s theurgy skills are apparently the fusion spells, which you’re allowed to use even when you don’t have the actual personas with you, which is nice. The two I have so far are Orpheus and Apsaras’ Cadenza, and the Jack Bros doing a standup routine, which is cute.

I also got my first introduction to the Reaper. None of these floors really seem large enough to worry about it, so I think this appearance was scripted. Easy enough to get away from, though.

Once we found the missing girl, we escorted her back to the entrance, and I kept going til I found the next barrier floor. We’re done for now, so it’s time to go work on some more requests. Liz has a good one here. :D

I love that all the Velvet attendants have a soft spot for Jack Frost.

We also get our first intro to Koromaru!

Apparently he walks himself each day, since his owner at the shrine passed away. He stops for pets, but then carries on with his routine all on his own. He’s such a good dog. T_T

Ikutsuki drags us away from fussing over Koromaru to have a proper SEES meeting. He’s concluded that the Full Moon Shadows we’ve seen so far follow the Arcana from I to IV, and that there should theoretically be eight more, spanning from the Magician to Strength. And if we destroy them all, it will get rid of Tartarus and the Dark Hour, and we will have saved Iwatodai from Apathy Syndrome!

...they are us. There’s not much more we can say, Ikutsuki.

Yeah, let’s go to the mall after that seriousness. We can check out a new social link!

...oh yeah because this won’t go wrong.

School is still kicking my ass because this school is insane. But Junpei gets it, at least.

I can’t spend time with Fuuka unless my courage is badass-level, because apparently her food is just that scary. She wants me to be a badass, Mitsuru wants me to be a genius… Is Yukari gonna want a casanova or something? X’D

And even though Mitsuru wants me to be a genius, she called the police because she thought Junpei’s messy room meant someone had broken in.

And, as my last act before leaving for Katsu, these guys have made their first appearance, executing people in the Dark Hour based on requests on a revenge website. I don’t know how they wake people up from the coffins, but Tattoo Man over here is blasting people with a real gun, so that’s gonna be a problem~

I return from my convention, happy and optimistic, and school is immediately still full of bullshit. XD

You know, Keisuke, if you dad doesn’t want you to be an artist, and wants you to take over the hospital, why does he have fancy paintbrushes?

Anyway, Keisuke is about to win an art contest and gain the opportunity to study art abroad. And his dad is actually encouraging him to study abroad, so now he doesn’t know if he wants to do it because he doesn’t want to do what his dad wants. It’s kind of ridiculous, but the Fortune Arcana is all about choices, so… I guess.

We’re also off to fashion club to hang out with Bebe, who is actually surprisingly lovely despite being French. I appreciate his utter weeaboo enthusiasm. But… his aunt passed away unexpectedly, and he doesn’t know if his uncle will support letting him continue to study abroad. So not only is he upset that his aunt is gone, he also might have to leave the country he loves.

Neither were you, dude! It’s okay!

This is not quite NieR Automata levels of “everything is bad”, but things are pretty bad. I mean… people are just leaving the Lost laying on the sidewalks. :/

The Lost are the ones with Apathy Syndrome, but everyone else seems pretty apathetic, too.

I took Elizabeth to Iwatodai Station, and we had a lovely time.

The takoyaki lady can see her, which, don’t worry, ma’am. Just showing my weird cousin around. She won’t tell me what’s in the takoyaki instead of octopus, though, because apparently the knowledge would be detrimental. Which… okay, Liz. Thanks. That’s not worrisome at all.

When last I saw Maiko, she was planning to ask her parents why they were getting a divorce, in the hopes of being able to fix it. Which, not a great plan, but I couldn’t actually stop her. She wants to talk now, though, so we’ll see how that wen--

WHERE IS HE

Maybe we can throw them into Tartarus. Fucking hell. Maiko wants to run away from home so that her parents are forced to work together to find her, and I am NOT allowed to beg Mitsuru to let her stay at the dorm. This sucks so much. She wants me to keep her plan a secret, but good lord. This is going to go so badly.

I go home to stew on my thoughts and play computer games for babies to up my courage.

However that works. X’D

Lastly, I’ve reached my first choice that could potentially reverse a social link, I think?

We commit scandalous hand-holding, and it’s nice. Chihiro clearly has a crush on me, but I don’t know who I want to date, yet. OBVIOUSLY, I have my preference, but since my preference isn’t available, I dunno. Fuuka is nice. Mitsuru is… great, but also SO far out of my league. XDDD

Pharos came back for my one-week full moon reminder, so I guess that’s up next. They keep implying it’s gonna be the Lovers shadow, since couples are passing out and someone mentioned Shirakawa Boulevard, but I thought Hierophant was next.

Ah, well.

gonna get very rambly but i need to go off about p.3r (spoilers below)

ok the articles and shit weren't kidding about the hang-out sessions with The Boys(TM). as an avid p.3 enjoyer, i feel the need to say that those changes were implemented SO well. everything in p.ersona 3 has such deep meaning to it and i'm glad to see that pattern continuing, especially when interacting with shinjiro and ken.

what really gets me is that first-time players can dive into those events and still be clueless by the end. when i first played, i had no idea what was about to go down. replaying makes it so much more obvious and heartbreaking, but there's something to be said about all of the hints given in p.3r that would still leave a new player relatively unaware. p.ersona 3 really did go so hard with permanent deaths and consequences. i'm glad there isn't any "oh but you can do this to save him" even when you can interact with him more.

also the lead-up to everything was just so...fucked up. mitsuru wanting shinjiro to go back to school and keep his promise especially. shinjiro KNOWS there's no point and even tells the protagonist that he IS going to die. even if he attends school, he won't last until graduation. it's just so devastating. and when it's paired alongside extra scenes where you check in on ken and he alludes to "leaving," the way everything goes down feels more impactful.

also...the cutscene.

i really wasn't sure if they'd be able to portray the emotions with the character models (even after p.5), but god damn, they nailed it. there was so much more detail than in any previous iteration. the blood on ken's hand, the horror (the trauma!), the way shinjiro's hand slips out of akihiko's...every bit of it is horrific and tragic.

i guess all of this is just to say that i'm so glad p.3r didn't just give p.3 a makeover, but put thought into interactions (without giving too much away) and added substantial detail to every aspect of shinjiro's death. i'm glad there's no cop-out for him. shinjiro's death is such an impactful turning point in p.ersona 3 and i am relieved it didn't lose that in the remake. i cried even more over this version ngl. it even had my husband in tears and that speaks VOLUMES.

just to cap this off on a "p.ersona 3 is the best one"/hj note, i've always loved how Real this game is. you feel the loss. it doesn't leave you with a "haha jk he's alive :)" fake-out death, it's all real and it changes you as much as it changes the characters. p.3's themes of death were taken so seriously in the original, not just with shinjiro (and even chidori), but with like...Everything. the social links were never meant to be completed, for one. nyx was designed as a near-impossible boss (and boy, did they live up to that for my dumb ass in middle school). everything had meaning and importance to it; life is short and precious. you should cherish it and spend it with your loved ones.

i've never had a game impact or change me as much as 3 did. i'm sure there are other games (and media in general) that pull off similar concepts, but i don't think any of them could affect me like p.3 did. to get kinda personal, i played this during the worst depressive period of my life, and i almost feel like i owe my life to it. it's so important to me.

About Ugetsu booklet

Hello,

I am alive~~ I am sorry that i haven’t been writing lately T_T I was feeling a bit down recently and it was hard for me to motivate myself to do it. But I am better now, so I here I am ^^

So I wanted to write about Ugetsu extra booklet, because I loved it very much. It was almost everything I hoped it to be. I really appreciate that Kizu Natsuki dedicated it to him and it really feels like was done thoughtfully with care for his development. Even if there is not much words, it is very apparent that Ugetsu is undergoing change and how whats happened in original story contributed to it.

To put my feeling shortly:

Obviously i would like it to be longer and get more time for character development and some background informations like how Ugetsu ended up in New York. But well, still what we got was really great – i liked how Gusari showed us a bit of Ugetsu’s new everyday life and how she woven symbolism into it.

Honestly I thought that Ugetsu will be in London since Akihiko’s dad is there. I mean it would be cool if these two will meet at some point since both of them had chosen music over loved ones. But New York is good choice too. In New York you can be new man~

What I liked about this booklet so much is that its main theme was transformation – but at the same time that it is not the final step, but rather somewhere in the middle. Which is understandable – trying to change yourself to your better version is not something simple and taking baby steps is okay. After all breakup with Akihiko changed everything for Ugetsu, so rebuilding his life is not something done easily.

Also it is reinforced by symbolism – butterfly obviously stands for transformation, but here it was referenced pupa state and not again final stadium. Besides, I liked that teapot on the first page – I wrote about over year ago meta about Ugetsu mugs broken mugs and kintsugi – which in short symbolize transformation too – and kintsugi is used primarily in tea ceremonies. It is nice how all is linked together.

In lots of stories character development starts with journey and leaving home – to point out leaving behind the comfort zone and trying to find own way to be yourself. Usually it is by figuring out middle way between two opposites - which in this case are music and everyday stuff + personal life.

Before that booklet we only have seen Ugetsu mostly in his basement, which showed his isolation from rest of the world. It was described as cocoon where he and Akihiko were feeling safe when things were good between them, but later it was more coded like mental headspace where you feel trapped and with no hope (sunlight). So I am happy he is no longer here too^^

What’s more there was so much mess in basement after Akihiko has left, which indicated that Ugetsu doesn’t care and didn’t bother cleaning since he was always focused on music only and felt no need to take care of that. Now this apartment is much better state, which shows that he had to change that attitude and that he doesn’t rely on anyone on this anymore. Though it is a bit funny that there is even one whole page dedicated to him just doing laundry xD

Similar case is with socializing – even though he is complaining, for him replying to text so fast is rather big step xD

But even so there is still air of loneliness around him.

Empty chairs is rather common symbol for solitude. We also don’t see Ugetsu face as he is looking outside. After all feeling trapped it is not something reserved for basement and still he is very isolated from rest of world and texting is his only way for communication with others as we see. Besides, furniture is still minimalist and lifeless as it was in basement – that’s why I think it is temporary place and not true home for Ugetsu. Like I mentioned earlier it is not a final, just a step in right direction.

Another thing that caught my attention was that briefly we see almost all other characters and how there are shown different ways of love though them:

friendship/platonic – Uenoyama and Hiiragi

romantic – Haruki and Akihiko

familial – Mafuyu and his mother (Kedama counts too as he is gift from her)

It is all what Ugetsu is currently missing.

We also know very little about his parents – it seems that they provide him money to live in comfort but there is not much else. Even in his short flashback as kid he is not really his “grandpa” but some random old man. It is also important that his parents have jobs so far removed from music – politic and diplomacy. It is just speculation here but I wont be surprised that they weren’t happy with choice but accepted it because he is genius at that. Or they are just busy and tried compensate it with sending money. But still main takeaway is that they are not present in his life.

Although we got bonding between Mafuyu and Ugetsu imo it is closer to beginning of friendship than proper one. In addition, the fact that Ugetsu lives now far away from everything he know – it still gives that air of isolation even though is no longer in basement.

After all– all these kind of love were granted to him from Akihiko, so no wonder there is so much hole after breakup – he just lost so much in that moment, and music is something that not always can compensate for that.

Honestly i hoped for some Akigetsu crumbs like some flashback or showing that they are somehow still connected to each other in soulmates way or that they keep in touch in some indirect way. And... i got everything which surprised me^^’

Okay, so let’s dig into it

matching symbolism – Aki with dragonfly (self realization and change) and now Ugetsu with butterfly(transformation). It is so cool I love things like that^^

piercing – it is quite peculiar how first we got dialogue about missing Akihiko’s piercing and later we got Ugetsu with new one. Ofc it is not like I am saying that is the same one, but still that choice is imo to show connection between them

Choice of flashback is interesting too - after all, one scene when they had heart to heart scene without words and another is horny one xD again it is different sides of love – in this case physical and emotional feelings as these were equally important in their relationship.

also it seems that both of them are keeping check on each other? It looks like Ugetsu knows that Aki returned to playing violin seriously. And that Aki sends him congratulation message – imo it shows that there is no longer bad feelings and regret between them, but maybe start for something new.

I really like his expression as he read Aki’s text - a mix of wistful and melancholic, but still he started smiling a bit later.

So what comes next?

Like I mentioned it looks like middle step in his character development - even his monologue at the end stated that we have to wait to see ^^ Imo that after Hiiragi arc will ended, we will see him again in main storyline – but judging of pacing it rather will be in second half of 2021 or 2022 *sigh*

I mean – it is just my hunch but imo Ugetsu alongside with Mafuyu and Hiiragi seem to be Gusari’s favorite characters, so I don’t think she will abandon him like that^^ No to mention that he is in character list for volume 6 – when you know - he wasn’t present at all or even mentioned once in the story xD

As for exactly his story will goo – it is kinda hard to tell now – I think that for sure his relationship with Aki will be rebuild in one way or another and we will get more interaction between Ugetsu and Mafuyu. It would be cool if he also get to know rest of teenagers – imo there would be a lot of banter xD

Anyway, I think Ugetsu will get everything he is missing now – all different kind of relationship with others - maybe in a bit of “found family” sort of way. Though chasing the music the most is what he wants, but still he needs other people in his life as he always looks so lonely. And ultimately imo meeting and connecting to others is something that actually helps to be better person. So still I hope we will get next part of his development and then happy ending. Like I mentioned in some of my previous essays – imo Gusari loves happy endings and despite all the angst we will get one for all characters one day.

Thieves In Inaba Part 28

Intel Gathering was at it highest importance, between the Meteor crashing and the sudden appearance of the threat the group has dubbed Death Bringer there needed to be some sort of disturbance in other areas.

Youske and Teddie decided to check Junes for people that might have some information about goings on. However, so far much like before..they haven’t dug up anything useful,

“You gotta be kidding me, we’re in a crisis and we come up with nothing new!” Yosuke sighs. “We need a reliable source of info and fast..”

Teddie suddenly gasps. “Marie-chan’s over there. Think she might be able to help?” Youske looks in the direction Ted is pointing in to see Marie shopping for a new journal in the art section.

“Hey yeah! She’d be a good start. But…doesn’t she only like Yu? Should we wait?” He sounds a bit reluctant to walk over.

“What happened to being in a crisis? I’m sure if we explain what’s up she’ll have to talk right? If nothing else, I can charm her with my beary good looks.” He gives Yosuke a cheeky grin that only earns an eye roll as a response.

The duo walk over right as Marie is about to turn around. “Huh? Oh it’s you two. You need something or are you just trying to be annoying again?” The black haired girl crosses her arms.

“We need to ask you something important. Things have gone wild again and we’re trying to make sure that nothing has happened outside of the TV.” Yosuke states.

“So what, you want to know if anything has happened? You live here right? You should have noticed something yourself.”

“L-Look, we were busy chasing the Thieves and-” But she cuts Youske off before he can finish.

“Well, I can tell you what I heard on the way in here. Some people in the electronics isle mentioned how a few kids went missing from a school trip out to the city. If whatever is going on has any connection to that, the city might be your best bet.” With that, Marie walks off.

“Missing children’s case huh… Think we should go ask Yu’s uncle?” Youske turns to Teddie.

“It’s a clue for sure! But we should at least tell the others what we found out. Oh! And make sure Ren’s team sees it too!”

Elsewhere within the city, the Shadow Operatives prepare to explore the TV World for clues. Minato is still puzzled by the concept of entering TVs.

“So..could we have entered TVs ourselves prior? Or only after Yu and his friends?” He asks, cleaning his old Katana.

“We don’t know.” Mitsuru responds. “All we know is it’s a hub that stays active unlike the Dark Hour or the Metaverse that Ren’s group travels in.”

“Well as long as it exists, we can all stay sharp on our skills right? So there’s no issue with it.” Akihiko smirks.

“But wait, how did you know to even go in the TV the first time when you saved Ren?” Yukari asks.

“Like I said, my body was kind of on auto pilot. I didn’t really become aware of what I was doing until I sensed the shadows near me.” He doesn’t even look up from his sword cleaning as he speaks.

“That’s certainly strange…” Fuuka notes. “But perhaps it’s for the best we don’t know for now.”

“Right, our priory is finding out the over all status of the TV World.” Ken nods, Koromaru barking in agreement.

“Well lead the way to the entrance then.” Minato watches as his friends head out, but before he can move himself, there’s a gentle tug at his shirt.

Turning to look he meets eyes with non other than Nanako Dojima, Yu’s cousin. She has a serious look on her face.

“Excuse me but…I need to ask you something. You were with my big bro right?” She asks innocently.

“Your Big Bro? Do you mean Yu?”

“Uh huh! I saw you talking to him before he walked off to the Police Center, did…did something bad happen again?” She looks a bit nervous. “There was murders back when he first came….I don’t want anything else bad to happen..”

Minato kneels to get to her level and places a hand on her shoulder. “I promise, nothing bad is going to happen. We’re just helping out with the missing children’s case is all.”

“Really? Oh that’s good. My Big Bro is so smart I know he can help bring those other kids back to their families.” She giggles a bit. “But…the air feels a bit funny right now.”

That statement caught him off guard. The air? “Do you mean that literally?”

“Uh-huh. It’s ticklish a bit…is it because of the Meteor?”

“Possibly, it’ll go away after a while I bet.” He gives her a comforting smile.

She smiles back. “Oops! I need to get back home. My dad was talking with Yosuke for a long time and I got bored. Thank you for talking to me, mister!”

“Haha, no problem. Be safe Nanako.” He stays long enough to watch her cross the street safely before taking out his cellphone and texting everyone.

“Ask…about….air…quality….and send. If Nanako isn’t the only one who’s noticed this…then we might need to take this as a much more serious issue.”

Ok so some thoughts on Persona 3 (FES) after like, 150 hours:

- As much as I did enjoy enjoy the story, it definitely wasn’t all good. The pacing was fucking atrocious and most of the social links were boring four line scenes. I also definitely didn’t like how they kinda took the buildup of the protagonist’s bond with the SEES members for granted. Minato sure acted apathetic for months on end until suddenly he... cared for them? Somehow? Despite literally only being able to bond with the girls (and all three need a maxed out stat too). Like damn I know I, as the player, cared for Shinjiro; fucker hit like a truck and wasn’t weak to anything of course I’d miss the guy, but The protagonist as a character? Yeah I’m not sold on Shinjiro’s death being traumatic when, outside of battle, the most they interacted was Shinjiro handing Minato a kitchen knife.

- Introducing Mudo and Hama on enemies with no warning that instant kills existed in this game was super bullshit.

- Maybe people would like The Answer more if it came with difficulty options because holy flying nutsacks on dirigibles it’s mcfucking hard.

- Aigis was... a surprise. Sure she’s beholden to rather dated dialogue (”I want to be by your side” repeated ad nauseam) but her Pinnochio story is actually really good. I adore stories of robots questioning if they are real and what real would actually mean for them, and how Aigis explores this is something I very much enjoyed. There is a fine touch to Aigis’ growth into a real person, from her sense of humor developing slowly over the course of the game to the fear and guilt she feels when what she did to Minato 10 years ago finally resurfaces. She expresses great frustration over being physically unable to cry for her friends when she sees them all so afraid and facing death. Then of course, there’s the ending and the goodbye Aigis gives by song over the credits. It’s so, so good. I love the trope of an android feeling love being what convinces them they are real, and it’s handled beautifully with Aigis. I love how her Persona is at first a mere image of Athena, Palladion. It’s a shell that looks like a person but opening it up reveals a weapon inside. And when she breaks down in fear and grief and is helped back up by her friends, her Persona changes into the actual Athena, no longer an empty shell. She makes the game. She even makes The Answer worth it with her whole arc of accepting grief and loss as another part of becoming human. (Seriously though what the fuck was up with The Answer not having an easier mode) - Nyx Avatar shows it’s ok to be cliche’ and tropey when you have a kickass soundtrack. It ticks off every final JRPG bossfight trope. Godlike indestructible being? Check. Telepathically beams out messages of doom? Check. This isn’t even its final form? 14 checks. In a genre where godkilling is just another Tuesday, Nyx Avatar makes apocalyptic entities frightening again. - I cannot get over how strong Persona 3 gets after October 4th. I was enjoying myself playing the early parts of the game but everything afterwards was like, sit up straight in chair then lean forward sort of intense. Everything gets ratcheted up to 11 and absolutely zero chill is to be found, anywhere. Akihiko tells you that on the day that all will die he wants to look at god right in the eyes and dare her to kill him and it’s fucking idle dialogue. The sheer spirit of defiance is exhilarating, like a hyperfocused version of the rebellious spirit that powers Persona 5′s power fantasy. No one can convince me that in the days leading up to the apocalypse SEES truly believed they ever had a chance of winning. They knew they couldn’t, they had already been told what they were going up against was beyond human comprehension, to the point where they cannot even physically speak her true name. And yet, they all decide they’re going to die fighting it at the strike of midnight at the top of its own tower. Their fight was not about hope; hope died on New Year’s eve, it was about will. About not going gentle into that good night. And that’s just *clench fist* the good shit.

- I have no idea how people say this game is cynical? I mean it certainly is the darkest of the three modern Personas but it literally revolves around rejecting futility and the end. They summon their Personas by reminding themselves they are mortal; they don’t have forever to live so the time TO live is now and fuck all who would take that away from them. Fuck apathy fuck the cold fuck accepting things as they are and begging for death. It literally ends with Minato facing off against the collective apathy of humanity, cold acceptance against defiant rage, and winning.

- Thanatos is one of the coolest designs I’ve ever seen I’m so fucking mad that he sucks how could they do this to Minato’s ultimate Persona aaaarrgghh.

- This is the single greatest OST I’ve ever heard in a video game. I once listened to Mass Destruction for a full 24 hours on end wondering If I would get sick of it. Nope. Still fucking slaps. The Battle for Everyone’s Souls makes you forget it’s already been an hour since Nyx started charming your allies so they cast Diarahan on him. - THE ARCANA IS THE MEANS BY WHICH ALL IS REVEALED is pretty cool yeah but have you ever heard *GASP* THE ENEMY! - Persona 3 HD fucking when Atlus? Fucking when???
