Request:  Hi!! Could I request Hank Voight x reader where he takes you to the gun range for the first time because he wants you to learn self defense but you’re lowkey kinda scared but also you have hank so what do you need self defense for?
Tumblr media
The gun felt foreign in your hands, but Hank was by your side, like he always was, a steady and safe presence. But he couldn’t be there all the time, and after your recent run in with an ex-con that had bad blood with Hank, he thought it was best you learn some self-defense.
You’d agreed, actually quite eager at first, your stubborn streak meaning you hated needing others to help you and fight your battles, but now that you were here... honestly? The prospect of firing the gun was actually pretty scary.
Hank went to the gun range often, usually to let off steam, but you’d never actually been yourself. He was in his element here, you, however, felt out of place. Was this really necessary? You’d been expecting to learn some hand-to-hand self-defense, maybe invest in some pepper spray, this all felt very fast.
It was cold, heavy, and it didn’t sit right in your grasp. Hank and the rest of the unit made it look so easy, it was almost second nature to them, but you weren’t a cop, you’d never owned or fired a weapon.
Hank’s hand was on arm, gently directly you to change your grip, his other going to your hip to make you turn slightly, getting you into the right stance. He took a step back and looked you over with a calculating gaze before giving you an encouraging nod and a smile.
You took a deep breath, in through your nose and out through your mouth, biting your lip as you stared down the barrel of the gun, the sounds around you muffled by the earmuffs you were sporting for protection, your goggles sitting oddly on your face.
Another breath and you put your finger to the trigger, feeling Hank’s eyes on your as you looked to your target across the room, the body shaped chart a little disconcerting as you set your sights on the chest. He’d told you to aim for the body, the biggest target, so that’s what you did.
A final breath, now or never, your hands steadier than you expected given your nerves, and you squeezed the trigger.
The gun recoiled in your hands but you held it firm, the feeling vibrating through your arm. Hank took a step forward and removed his earmuffs, so you followed suit, staring down at your hands as you placed the gun on the surface in front of you.
“Not bad,” Hank commented, putting a hand on your back to get your attention and gesturing with his head to the target.
Right over the heart.
“Huh,” you smiled slightly, impressed with yourself. You’d thought for sure you wouldn’t even hit the target, not that it was particularly far away, but still.
You looked back at Hank, who was looking proud. “You’re a natural,” he told you.
“Beginners luck,” you replied with a little laugh, some of the tension in your body releasing a little. That wasn’t as bad as you’d expected, though you never wanted to need to fire a weapon.
“Maybe,” he grinned, “but that’s why we’re here, to practice, I just want to make sure you’re safe.” His grin faded, replaced by a serious tone and genuine concern.
You knew your encounter with that ex-con had rattled him more than he’d wanted to let on, it was the main reason you’d agreed to join him at the gun range. You knew he’d always protect you when he could, but that didn’t mean he didn’t worry, so if you could allieviate some of that... you’d quash your nerves and give it a go.
“Round two?”

I really think that Jay knows Erin and that's exactly why he was distantly supportive. Because he knows and understand her. He knows that Erin is the type of person to push the people she loves away in those situations. Yes she was honest about not being okay, but he may have been hesistant because the last time he tried to be there for her was when Nadia died.
You summed up my rambling meta perfectly, anon. Thank you.
