A Kickstarter has been created to help save @colettelumiere’s legendary New York “Living Environment!”

In 1978, the iconic New York artist Colette staged her own death at the Whitney Museum. Days later, she reemerged in a different guise: Justine, president of Colette is Dead, Co. and frontwoman for the Victorian Punks (a unique, feminine take on the “vibrant” punk scene of the time). Since then, she’s undergone a variety of other transformations, including Mata Hari, Countess Reichenbach, and the House of Olympia. In the wake of 9/11, she reinvented herself as Colette Lumière. Now, in another year of upheaval, Colette has decided it’s time for the birth of a new persona, Colette de la Victoire. In 2001 “we all needed light,” she tells @dazed, while in 2020: “We have to think of a good outcome, a victorious outcome.”

60 publications / 5 years retrospective #17 — Colette, Street Works, 1971-1975, Paris, 2016, 20 x 14,8 cm, Digital print, 100 copies. Even if it looks like a reprint, this material had never been published before. I met Colette thanks to @katie_peyton_ as she was exhibiting her work at her gallery @undercurrentprojects. Colette showed me this documentation about a series of street paintings she did in the early 1970s (around the same time she was interviewed by Andy Warhol and slept in the vitrines of the @newmuseum as a performance). The zine we made is very simple, each photograph is faced with handwritten notes about the date, the location of the painting and wether or not she was arrested by the cops. Basically, @colettelumiere was doing #streetart 30 years before it was a thing! A true New York legend. In 2015, I chose antoine lefebvre editions both as my artist name and as my imprint. I didn’t do it on purpose, but after some time, I realised I was issuing more or less one new publication each month. For my reasons, some of which are pretty obvious, I haven’t published anything for a while. So it is about time to sit back, relax and enjoy the work done until I figure out what comes next.
