Tour Championship, Manchester
The final ITV snooker tournament of the season came and went in pleasingly straightforward fashion. Team GFX delivered once again, as did the tournament – overall, the matches were quick and of a much, much higher standard than the doubles that preceded it. Gary Wilson put in a strong bid for my player of the week, the two main reasons being his fantastic walk-on song (Mark Knopfler – Going Home) and his Round 1 defeat of Mark Selby! In his post-match interview, Selby was so despondent about his performance that he teased the tantalising prospect of retirement – I’m not counting any chickens, but…
Wilson ran into Ronnie O’Sullivan in the semi-finals, who needed a touch of magic dust in the home stretch to finally put the Tyneside Terror away. His fellow finalist was fellow “Class of ’92” alum Mark Williams, who – after squeaking through a final-frame decider vs Tom Ford in Round 1 – gave Judd Trump and Mark Allen a butt-whuppin’ apiece in the subsequent rounds. That is no exaggeration – he rendered them both helpless with a potent combo of superb safety play and ruthless clearances. He even went 9-0 against Allen, and although it took him 6 more frames to seal the deal, it was a mesmerising performance.
So we had a fitting final to end the season on – two of the quickest, most entertaining and decorated players in the game, and they did not disappoint. Williams edged 3-1 ahead in the opening session, but after the interval, O’Sullivan played four devastating frames to lead 5-3 at the halfway stage (Williams potted 2 balls). However, in the evening session, Willo found his A-game once more and reeled off 7 straight frames to emphatically claim the title! It meant that Williams had beaten the top 3-ranked players in the world to win the tournament – can’t say fairer than that.
Tumblr media
On a side note, there was a wonderfully touching moment just before the final started, as special mention was given to one of the cameramen Duncan, who was covering his last tournament before a well-earned retirement:
http://x.com/itvsnooker/status/1776949276234355001
And if a standing ovation from the crowd wasn't enough, once the confetti had been fired and the trophy lifted, Mark Williams went over to Duncan, handed him his winner's medal and gave him a big ol’ hug! Who knows where I’ll be or what I’ll be doing when it’s my turn to hang it up, but I can only hope to have a send-off half as lovely as Duncan’s.
Oh, and being the last tournament of the season, I felt it only proper to get a team GFX photo as well – so we popped into the studio when no one was looking and got one!

USA Football World Cup: Champion league important for USMNT to qualify FIFA World Cup
For quite a long time, U.S. men's soccer estimated progress through basic achievements: meeting all requirements for a Football World Cup 2022 from an undecorated locale and progressing to the knockout stage, developing the homegrown expert group, and sending players to another country. The bar was low, and aside from a passing disaster four years prior, the United States met it.
Fans from all over the world are called to book Football world Cup tickets from our online platforms WorldWideTicketsandHospitality.com. Football World Cup fans can book USA Football World Cup Tickets on our website at exclusively discounted prices.
Tumblr media
Presently take in what will happen Saturday at an arena in Portugal: A youthful American assailant who directed a U.S. record move charge two years prior and a goalkeeper who went through the NCAA and MLS before likewise arriving in the English Premier League will crash in club soccer's greatest display, the UEFA Champions League last. I get goosebumps considering everything, Gregg Be strap, the U.S. public group mentor, said of Chelsea's Christian Puglisi and Manchester City's Zack Steffen being in uniform at Estacio do Dragon in Porto.
Puglisi and Steffen would not be the principal Americans to play for European and, likewise, worldwide matchless quality. In 1997, at age 20, American Jovan Kirov ski was an individual from Borussia Dortmund's title group however wasn't in uniform for the last. In 2013, Neven Subtopic, who addressed U.S. youth crews before he changed to Serbia on the senior level, begun for next in line Borussia Dortmund. Yet, interestingly Saturday, a functioning individual from the U.S. men's public group will step onto the triumph stage and celebrate with the silver prize in the midst of a snowstorm of confetti before a worldwide TV crowd moving toward 400 million, four times U.S. viewership of the Super Bowl. Pulisic, 22, will begin or fall off the seat sooner or later; Steffen, 26, will not play except if Eder's child, the Brazilian starter, is harmed.
Tumblr media
It's an extensive advance for U.S. soccer, regardless of whether Pulisic plays just five minutes and TV cameras never discover Steffen on the sideline. CBS will convey the match, not on a link stage but rather with a public transmission went before by an hour and a half pregame show. Eastern Time. The third round of the PGA Tour's Charles Schwab Challenge should stand by at the soonest. That was the organization's arrangement from the start, with or without U.S. players.
The inclusion of Americans just widened the game's allure here. What is significant for U.S. soccer, however, is making this the standard instead of the exemption. The inquiry just before each hero League last shouldn't be whether an American is in the match however which ones.
On the off chance that this advancement season across the landmass is any sign, normal appearances in the Champions League's late stages will develop. Other than Pulisic and Steffen, U.S. major parts in top-five European associations qualified for next season's competition from Barcelona (Sergio Desta), Juventus (Weston McKinnie), Borussia Dortmund (Gio Reyna), Lille (Tim Wean), Wolfsburg (John Brooks), and RB Leipzig (Tyler Adams).
Tumblr media
Adams, 22, verged on arriving at the last a year ago, falling one stage short. Others this season assumed key parts on title clubs in unobtrusive classes, for example, 20-year-old assailant Brenden Aaronson with Austria's RB Salzburg. Solid exhibitions at more modest clubs conceive moves to greater clubs in greater classes. It's the manner in which soccer works. For more to know about Qatar Football World Cup Packages Click here
U.S. men's players have been looking for some kind of employment in Europe for quite a long time, and the current tally is more than 120. In any case, having them in Champions League groups, that is somewhat unique, said Jürgen Klinsmann, the previous German genius who trained the U.S. public group from 2011 to 2016.
The crème de la crème of world football is the Champions League, and now have two parts in the last really in the group sheets, that is nothing to joke about, and that satisfies us all, said Klinsmann, a long-lasting Southern California occupant. During his residency, Klinsmann was a defender of pushing youthful Americans with high expertise levels to Europe and specifically to significant clubs, where they would raise their game by confronting more prominent difficulties and contest for playing time than in MLS.
That, obviously, didn't agree with proprietors in the homegrown circuit. The truth, however, is the best soccer is played in the significant alliances of Europe. Furthermore, as American ability creates here, the characteristic objective is Europe's force five: Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga, Spain's La Lia, Italy's Series A, and French League 1.
Tumblr media
The climb of Pulisic and Steffen, Klinsmann said, shows all the American children, any place they are and whatever group they play in, there is a way to the greatest groups on the planet. There is a chance. It demonstrates there is such a lot of ability in the United States. Some such countless children have the characteristics. Pulisic and Steffen took various ways, however they started in Pennsylvania towns 60 miles separated.
Pulisic marked abroad at age 16, supported by Borussia Dortmund prior to being offered to Chelsea for $73 million of every 2019. Steffen played at the University of Maryland for a very long time, didn't work out in Germany, featured for the Columbus Crew, and afterward endorsed with Manchester City. To acquire playing time keep going season, he went borrowed to Germany's Fortuna Düsseldorf prior to choosing to acknowledge a reinforcement part in England this season.

It started on a Friday night in Manchester, then upgraded to a VIP box at the 02, then back down to the cheap (er) seats in Birmingham for another three times. Correction four times after we brought tickets for their last Birmingham and arena gig this Sunday the day before.
The original plan was four concerts – Manchester, O2 and two nights in Brum. However, our military operation of buying the tickets ended up with an extra Birmingham night because when I clicked on ‘Pay Now’ and my lap top crashed, I didn’t know if the order had gone through. So, our friend tried for another night and as soon as she got her confirmation order number, I received my mine.  Has for the sixth (and hopefully our final one) my sister said she was just checking if there were any cheap seats left, she found tickets by the B stage and had an impulse buy moment. Monsieur X thinks I have gone mad but hey it’s my money and other friends ask ‘how can you watch the same show so many times?’  Easy with a Take That concert there is so much going on I see new things every show.
Take That are my second favourite band, Bon Jovi are number one but the cost of one BJ show = 3 TT shows, and I have seen TT 27 times so far (not including solo tours). Three times before the big split, missing the comeback tour as I was working abroad, four times on the TT Circus, three Progress shows and seventeen times après Jason including a trip to Berlin.
Tumblr media
So back to the latest tour it was a wonderful, brilliant, extraordinary, amazing etc. I can’t find any more words in the thesaurus they never disappoint. The set list is the same as their Greatest Hits album with the same new versions of some of their old songs.  With this show I felt they blew all their budget on the massive disco ball made up of TV screens giving a cool video display and a higher stage for the boys (and Lulu).  The flames that appear for Relight My Fire and Get Ready for It were more like sparklers and even thou they had a second B stage for two full songs that’s the only time they came out to the fans (no extension out to the crowd from their main stage).
My memories of this tour are Mark missing his drum solo cue during Out of Our Heads Tonight in Manchester, watching the large screen/ball effects from a VIP Box in the O2 and protecting my beer from the confetti rain during Greatest Day, Cry and Said It All.
I really wanted to go and see them in Paris next month but my sister can’t stand the place and even TT can’t make her go also I think TT has taken all my money now.  However, on the positive side we can start saving for their next tour hopefully in a few years.
Tumblr media
My favourite part of the Greatest Hits tour: 1. Jason’s video clip 2. Spin and 3. Rule the World
My top three tours in order of preference: 1. The Circus 2. III and 3. This Greatest Hits tour.
My favourite songs: With the all members, Pray (not keen on the new version) and Never Forget, as a foursome Rule the World and now as a three piece, Giants and after these latest gigs I love Spin.

Interview: Sundara Karma
By Amy Matthews (27 Feb 2017, via)
I meet with Reading’s Sundara Karma on a dreary Manchester evening. Speaking to singer Oscar Lulu, bassist Dominic Cordell and drummer Haydn Ashley, ahead of their sold-out show at the breath-takingly beautiful Albert Hall. The band have been on the road for many weeks touring America, supporting Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema club and are currently in the middle of their own sold-out headline tour.
They are clearly excited for tonight’s show after a triumphant show in Newcastle the night before, “It was really good” beams Dom. Reflecting on previous tours, it’s clear that their debut album tour is clearly a step up for previous ones, “It smashes it” grins Haydn.
Talking about their progression from smaller venues to bigger ones, they are delighted with what’s happening. Tonight is clearly a big night for the band, talking about Manchester crowds Haydn notes how “They’re nuts” with Dom chiming in “They’re crazy.”
Reflecting on the past 18 months, Dom highlights their rise to this point, mentioning their show at Soup Kitchen in Manchester’s Northern Quarter which went down extremely well, followed by a sold out show at Gorilla and then the 02 Ritz, last September. Dom beams: “Its been a crazy journey… I wouldn’t of thought we would have been in this position 18 months ago, when we played Soup Kitchen to a group of drunk people.”
Dom notes how their Albert Hall show “Is the biggest show off their own backs” hinting at some special surprises for the show “To make it extra special.” Hadyn jokes that “Nasty is going to come on” Dom follows that “We’ve got Stomzy down as well” sadly neither artists make an appearance. What a shame.
Such surprises that were included in the set though were huge inflated balloons, a confetti cannon and Oscar covered in iridescent glitter. Incredible. Joking about the possibly of continuing the party after the show, Dom hints “We’ll see where the night takes us. Manchester is always a mad one….Its Madchester!” It sure is.
Talking about their main support with Two Door Cinema Club, the band are clearly over the moon with how it went. Dom mentions that “It was really good, they are really lovely lads… they were really nice to us, we had a few nights on tour!” Speaking about fellow touring buddies Anteros — who opened for Two Door — he highlights how everyone got on really well: “It was a lovely tour.” Speaking about the crowds “We had great crowds… every night was really consistent… People were singing the words, mosh pits… crazy kids!”
It’s clear that they didn’t anticipate such a strong response, as Dom notes “No one really expected we would get that reaction… It was a nice surprise.” Talking about their recently released album ‘Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect’ in January. The title stems from the track ‘Deep Relief’ Oscar mentions how he felt it was the most honest title, that they could give the album. “It was the last thing we did for the album and it really tied everything in” He says. “That was the moment where I thought… this does feel like an album.”
Hayden adds in that the title was the “Icing on the cake” Delicious. Reflecting on a serious of instore signings and acoustic sessions that the band did when the album was first released, it’s clear that their Manchester HMV instore was a highlight. “There was a mosh pit in the middle of HMV” Wow. Surely that’s a first. Speaking about playing the new material at shows “Its nice to see people singing along to the new tracks…rocking out!” Dom chimes. “It can be quite awkward sometimes, you never know how someone is going to react, but they’re enjoying the album which is nice…they might of hated it… who’s knows, they are dancing either way… that’s all that matters!” Indeed.
Our conversation then leads to talking about tonight’s set-list. Talking about old fan favourites, their track ‘Hustle’ is back on the setlist, “Back by popular demand” Dom exclaims. When asked about the track ‘Indigo Puff’, Haydn jokes “We can’t give it all away” what a tease. I can confirm it was performed, quite beautifully too.
Talking about their cover of Never Too Much by Luther Vandross, a popular addition to the setlist, that first came about last year. “We just really love the song…We were listening to it all the time” Dom beams. Speaking about their recent Radio 1 live lounge with Clara Alfro, “It was good… we had great fun… It was great doing a live lounge and getting that under our belts” beams Hayden, the session involved them playing well known track Flame — with guitarist Ally playing his infamous cowbell — and a cover of Bruno Mar’s 24K Magic for which the band received hate from online trolls.
The set ended with Oscar giving Clara his fur coat “She liked it more than I did” How kind. Speaking about Radio 1 DJ Huw Stevens took the band on the road with Izzy Bizu and Spring King to America. Dom mentions that he has “supported them from the beginning.” Dom highlights that it was an intense experience with the band sharing a van with Izzy Bizu when enduring lengthy drives to their destinations “there was nothing… there was no room you couldn’t even move.” Despite this, Dom notes “We had a great time, the shows were good… there were lovely people” other highlights included going to LA, exploring Joshua Tree park and celebrating Oscars 21st birthday in Vegas.
Thinking ahead to their final headline show in London at the 02 Shepherds Bush Empire, “It’s the biggest one” smiles Haydn, the band are clearly excited about what is to come. After concluding their tour in late February, the band have many things planned including a recently confirmed headline slot at Dot to Dot Festival in May which will see them playing in Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham. “I think we’ve out done ourselves there” grins Hayden.
Reflecting on previous Dot 2 Dot performances in Manchester, including their performance in 2015 at Mint Lounge with only a few in-attendance Haydn mentions “That was the day my snare drum got nicked.” Reminiscing happier times during their Dot 2 Dot performance at the Cathedral last year, a set so good that the barrier collapsed: “That was amazing… I liked to play the cathedral again” beams Dom. It clearly made a big impact.
As well as headlining Dot 2 Dot, and playing numerous festivals during the summer months the band plan to go to America to play at SXSW and “potentially play some headline stuff over there” Dom reveals, as well as another UK headline tour later this year. One things for sure there are many more exciting times for Sundara Karma ahead and this is only the beginning. []

Shaky Knees
Saturday
  It’s Saturday, the second day of the festival, and the weekend is officially in full swing, plus it’s Cinco de Mayo, so if you didn’t already have a reason to get out and have a good time today, Shaky Knees just gave you at least 25 more to get out and have a good time.
  Songs for Kids
Once again, kicking the festival off was Songs for Kids on the big stage. Today featured, Nia and Danielle singing some original songs like, “I Can See the Light” and “Perfect Day,” and if that drummer looked familiar to you, you might know Charlie Hall from his other band, The War on Drugs.
  Bayonne
Bayonne is the one-man project of Roger Sellers who creates dreamy landscapes by layering loops over loops, crafting sounds with his voice, keyboards and real drums into organic song sculptures. Headphones on, dancing around stage, he created a fun, creative collage of experimental beats and sounds.
  The Sherlocks
The Sherlock’s from Sheffield, England, played a killer set of driving songs on the main stage, including “Escapade” from their new record, Live for Moment. Earlier this year the band opened some dates for Liam Gallagher and that seems to have served them well as the band displayed a steady confidence as they blistered through a ton of great songs that won them some new fans.
  Sun Seeker
Self described as “cosmic American music,” Sun Seeker, from Nashville, just released their debut EP,  Biddeford, on Third Man Records. Live, the band is a woozy wash of haze and vibe that was a perfect soundtrack for the crowd that assembled under the trees and across the lawn to soak up some great new music at the Criminal Records stage.
  Torres
Moody, emotional and powerful. Torres hits the mark again and again with songs like “New Skin” and “Sprinter,” and in a live setting they’re even more poignant in light of her recent record label troubles. The opening lines of “New Skin,” “Lay off me would ya, I’m just trying to take this new skin for a spin. Pray for me would ya” set the tone for the entire set.
  “Strange Hellos,” the final song of the set was particularly unhinged and passionate as she belted, “I was all for being real, but if I don’t believe, then no one will, what’s mine isn’t really yours, but I hope you find what you’re looking for.” One of the best sets of the festival so far.
  Stop Light Observations
Stop Light Observations is a rock and roll band from Mt. Pleasant, SC. Writing songs about life’s larger themes of love, passion and loss. Singer, Will Blackburn possess a classic rock voice that sends you back to the 70s but he posses a delicateness that really pulls you in and they had a passionate and loyal crowd out to the seem them.
  Bully
After ripping through their first 2 songs, “Feels the Same” and “Guess There,” Bully singer and guitarist, Alicia Bognanno, paused and looked down, “There’s a sticker on the stage below me that says David Byrne. I can’t live up to that.” And while David Byrne did indeed stand on that very spot last night, his set was cerebral and multi-rhythmic, while Bully was a freight train headed straight at you. The band blistered through killer tunes like, “Brainfreeze,” “Trying,” and “Spiral” before closing out with “Jennylee,” with Bognanno ditching the guitar and taking to the front of the stage to belt out the vocals.
  Gretta Van Fleet
The obvious comparisons to Led Zeppelin aside… I mean, if Robert and Jimmy aren’t going to get the band back together, why not? The band has killer chops and can play and sing with the best of them, but I’d love to hear them break out of “that sound.” Their set left the huge crowd buzzing for more. I think this will be a band to watch for years to come.
  Parquet Courts
You can always count on Parquet Courts for a good time, even if it’s a bit chaotic. A few songs into their set singer/guitarist Andrew Savage started into a spiel about their new t-shirts and soccer scarves, “That’s right I’m selling merch on stage.” They blistered through a ton of great songs including “Dear Ramona,” “Master of My Craft,” and “Borrowed Time” before bringing out a drummer named Diego to play the timbales and percussion on a fun song called “I’m Wide Awake” that could easily have been lifted off a late-model Talking Heads album.
  The Distillers
Hot on the heels of their reunion tour announcement in January. The Distiller hit the big stage hard and played a ton of classic Distillers tunes that had the crowd going nuts from the first tune. Vocalist and guitarist, Brody Dalle growled through the entire set but with as much fire and energy as the band had all night, they really came together when they slowed it down for “The Hunger.”
  Jacob Banks
Jacob Banks possess a soulful powerhouse of a voice and the band mined the deepest grooves all set long. The crowd at the Criminal Records stage was enraptured the entire set. He ended his set with a passionate and surging version of “Chainsmoking.”
  Manchester Orchestra
During the previous set by the Parquet Courts, they told everyone “Up next is Manchester Orchestra all the way from England, they’re a full orchestra.” And while they do have some things in common with a larger band, like their enormous sound, locals will know them as Atlanta’s sons, and the crowd soaked up their bombastic and epic songs.
  Andrew W.K.
If you haven’t seen Andrew W.K. in concert before it’s a bit like a religious event that celebrates music, life and partying. The church of rock was in session today, even if only for a brief hour. For his last song Andrew asked the crowd to countdown from 100. At first people laughed as we all counted down, 81, 80, 79… but the closer we got to 0 the more excited everyone got, and just a we hit 0 the sky opened up with rain as the band kicked into “Party Hard.”
  The War on Drugs
It probably won’t be too controversial to say, but The War on Drugs channel some of the best sounds from the mellow classic rock era and pull them into the present to create a comfortable relevancy that is perfect for a rainy Saturday evening, and as the rain came down at the start of their set and the lights and fog poured forth from the stage there were hints of Jackson Browne in the melodies but with bigger guitars, Little bits of the Eagles in the arrangements and pacing and a sense of abandon in the guitars that added perfectly to the now clearing skies and setting sun. Too much? Ok, they sounded great. Really great.
  Chicano Batman
Despite the rain starting right at the beginning of their set, Chicano Batman, wearing their matching lounge-act approved suits, had the crowd dancing and grooving in the rain with their feel good vibes, and killer grooves. Described as “soul/psych/tropical” they’re out supporting their fantastic new record, Freedom is Free.
  Cake
One of the tightest bands out there, they ripped it up through all the hits like “Love You Madly,” “Sick of You,” “Never there” and their mega-hit, “Short Skirt Long Jacket.”
  Matt and Kim
Matt and Jim are a force of nature live and if you didn’t want to have a good time, well, too bad, you’re gonna have a good time. Matt introduced Kim on stage by saying that a year ago Kim had surgery on her ACL and this was their first American festival date since that accident, so it was only fitting that they should play a festival called Shaky Knees. To see them live is to love them even more. Frantic energy, crowd surfers, giant beach balls, confetti and non-stop smiles on everyone around.
  Queens of the Stone Age
Finally, tonight’s headliner, Queens of the Stone Age hit the stage and hit it hard. Featuring a unique light show with what appeared to be rubber poles embedded with lights, Josh Homme and the band stalked the stage while tearing through a 16-song set starting with “If I Had a Tail,” “In My Head,” “My God Is the Sun,” and “Feet Don’t Fail Me” and others before closing out with two back-to-back classics, “Go With the Flow” and “A Song for the Dead.”
  Ok, we’ve got 1 day left and it’s a good one. The National will be headlining the main stage tonight and don’t miss these other great bands like The Wild Reeds, Alvvays, Lord Huron, The Voidz, Tedo Stone and more.
  Check out the schedule below for all the times and stages.

all your fear is just confetti
::when it gets too heavy :: don’t let it get too heavy::
here are some thoughts about some musicians I love and the albums they made this year.
PLAYLIST FOR YOU
1. Kevin Devine :: We Are Who We’ve Always Been :: an acoustic reimagining of his Instigator album, both stunning and beautiful and soul-healing in their own right, this one also features harmonies from The Mynabirds & Half Waif, ‘Before You’re Here’ sounds like a lullaby now. I’m grateful to have seen Kevin this year, amidst canceled tours & other garbage, he is a beacon of light & kindness. I don’t think I’ve ever had a feeling or thought that doesn’t also have a corresponding song of his to help me understand and process it, and that is the greatest gift.
2. Manchester Orchestra :: A Black Mile To The Surface :: this album is truly a masterpiece, a throughline showing a mature progression from their very first album to this point in time, emerging from a chrysalis with signs of new life and growth (or as I summed it up on the album release day - from ‘colly strings’ to ‘black hills the colly’). they remind me that there is good in the world, there is unspeakable love, and the way they sound live is inimitably perfect.
3. Julien Baker :: Turn Out The Lights :: I’m inexpressibly thankful for her voice in the world, creating songs as an argument against despair. she is The Truth, The Power, & The Beauty. ‘maybe it’s all gonna turn out alright and I know that it’s not but I have to believe that it is’
4. Mt. Eerie :: A Crow Looked At Me :: I almost shared this album with a friend, and then thought better of it. I’m glad I waited. I am not sure that anyone else will feel the way I do about these songs. (also, married people will definitely have a different reaction). so. this album came out in March, and I have listened to it only twice. and I am someone who loves sad songs. are there enough caveats yet? it’s a devastating reflection written by a man who lost his wife to cancer last year. yet there’s something about the way he details his specific grief that’s so comforting to me. the best artists are the ones who let us rent their feelings, who lead us through a feeling we might be afraid of or unfamiliar with and let us know it will be alright on the other side. I’m thankful that he shared this deeply personal emotion throughout this album, for anyone who needs it.
5. David Bazan :: Care :: Lo Tom :: I probably listened to David on podcasts more this year than I did his actual music: he’s an incredible guest & particularly helped me by saying that he “always looks for the most uncomfortable person in the room” and then tries to figure out how to connect with them. I’m also really grateful that we’ve gotten to talk this year - he’s given me such encouragement in detailing how he navigates the world as a post-evangelical, & he’s a kind prophet in all these matters, leading the way forward through empathy & righteous anger. oh, the music: this year marks 20 that he’s been the soundtrack to my life, that I’ve been indebted to him, and I couldn’t be more thankful that he’s still creating and touring and bearing witness. also, the crisp rock music of his new supergroup Lo Tom warmed my 90s heart.
the rest of the list, in no particular order, all lovely in their own right:
Guiding Light :: Guide The Lightning
Phoebe Bridgers :: Stranger In The Alps
Big Thief :: Capacity
Grandaddy :: Last Place
Japanese Breakfast :: Soft Sounds From Another Planet
Matt Pond :: Still Summer
The Mynabirds :: Be Here Now
Tom McRae :: Ah, The World! Oh, The World! (special appreciation for sending a BOOK as liner notes)
Torres :: Three Futures
John K Samson :: Winter Wheat (2016)
Megan Michelle Bird :: Sad Songs For Happy People
Split Single :: Fragmented World (2014)
Abigail Dowd :: Don’t Wake Me
Aimee Mann :: Mental Illness
Adult Mom :: Soft Spots

Weezer @ Manchester Apollo - Wed 25th October 2017
“For fucks sake!” This was my fellow concert goer Dave’s response to checking the train times for our upcoming journey to Manchester. We had already come to accept the fact that we were set for a 90 minute bus replacement service after the concert, but a half an hour delay on the way out was not ideal. However, there was another train we could catch – it left the station in 3 minutes. We both downed the rest of our drinks, and bolted for the nearby platform. We made it by mere seconds, and thus the journey to the O2 Apollo began.
On tonight’s agenda – Weezer. A rock band formed in the 1990’s in Los Angeles, California, in what would be only their 2nd performance in Manchester since 2005. Me and Dave would both agree that this will probably the ‘softest’ performance that we would ever attend together. But as he considered “The Green Album” as being in his top 20 albums of all time, and I seem to remember that their performance at Sonisphere Festival 2011 was top notch (despite being hugely intoxicated) – we were eager to see them perform again.
In support were The Orwells, “something to do with George Orwell” as Dave correctly spouted, a punk rock five-piece from Chicago. After listening to a few of their songs beforehand, we weren’t convinced, so we used this time to have a few more beers at the Apsley Cottage Inn round the corner from the venue.
An unusually early start time of 8:45pm soon came around, so we rushed to finish the final few mouth fulls of amber nectar, before darting down the road to the Apollo. Ignoring the offers of “Standing or Seated” tickets from the numerous touts outside – the Apollo is literally in the arse-end of nowhere, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have a bloody ticket!
Anyhow, through a quick scan and search at the doors and through into the foyer. Knowing how bad we both were at holding our beer, me and Dave decided to head to the right hand side of the standing area, nearest to the toilets – only to be stopped at the entrance to check our tickets. As I am a lover in saving all of my concert tickets, I sailed straight through. Dave on the other hand sheepishly admitted that he had “put mine in the bin” and hurried back to search through the rubbish to find it.
Finally the lights went down, and the recorded intro to “California Kids” teased the audience as the band hit the stage. Eccentric front man Rivers Cuomo limps from the shadows at the back of the stage, much like Willy Wonka does at the start of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. However there is no inspiring forward roll from Rivers, instead he pulled his guitar strap over his bowl cut, adjusted his glasses and crawled his way into “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here”. A song from the triple-platinum awarded “Blue Album” that hasn’t been played by Weezer live since 2015. This caught us a bit off guard – me and Dave are avid Setlist.FM followers, and this was a complete curveball. I used this opportunity to use the aforementioned toilets and purchase another beer at the suddenly empty bar.
The band played their way nonchalantly through the opening few songs, the quartet barely breaking a sweat through the slow tempos of “The Good Life” and “No-One Else”.  The audience behind the first 10 rows of diehard fans were struggling to engage with the slow, melodic start to the show. I heard one person exclaim how “dull” it was, and the volume of the conversations of the people around us began to drown out the music coming from the stage. However, having seen the hit and miss reaction to the 1996 album ‘Pinkerton’, it wasn’t surprising to hear this during the lead single on this album, ‘El Scorcho’.
The opening doodle to fan favourite ‘Surf Wax America’ brings the whole room to life, every person in here is “going surfing”, followed up quickly with the Grammy award winning “Pork and Beans” the audience had suddenly found its voice. And what a voice! This was the loudest crowd I have ever heard at a concert by far. Me and Dave often worry about singing along at concerts, as we make up 90% of the words that we sing – but there was no cause for concern here. The audience were out singing the band through the choruses of their biggest hits and our missing lyrics were lost amongst a sea of happy voices.
Weezer are touring the UK in support of their new album “Pacific Daydream”, a concept album where the singles have been met with mixed reviews. This album has definitely been created with a more alt-rock vibe, which is hugely present in the next song “Happy Hour” which did see a large percentage of the crowd head to the bar/toilet. This is something I see at every show I attend – new songs = time for a piss. It was happy hour for us two as well, as we took advantage of the 2 for 1 drinks offer with O2, as our excellent singing had left us rather parched. It must be said though, that no matter which style of music Weezer perform, they are well and truly on point – they are a well oiled machine. There’s no fireworks, there’s no bells or whistles. Just 4 talented musicians, on a stage, with a huge flashing W behind them.
We reach the “Greatest Hits” section of the show, and this is where the crowd really came into their own during fan favourites “My Name Is Jonas”, “The Sweater Song” and “Hash Pipe” during which Mr Cuomo released a perfect impression of Manchester icon Liam Gallagher – not forgetting a cool solo snippet of Mike Posner’s “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”, before a roaring rendition of “Island In The Sun” brought the house down. The end of a set that started off slowly came much too quickly, with the band simply walking off the stage to a rousing rendition.
Chants of “Weezer” and “Manchester La, La, La” coaxed the boys back onto the stage for another song. Due to the early start, we actually managed to stick around to watch the encore, and they saved a personal favourite for last. The audience again drowned out the band during “Buddy Holly” and I once again found myself wondering who the hell Mary Tyler Moore was. Confetti rained down during the final chorus, as the cleaners waiting in the wings sobbed quietly to themselves.
“I’m not buying a cheap knock off t-shirt tonight” Dave promised me as we filed out of the building, and then spent 5 minutes ogling the selection laid out by the side of the front doors. To be fair he stuck to his word once I’d dragged him away, and we even managed to bag a lift home from an old friend we met, saving us 90 minutes of bus replacement hell.
