THE WORLD CHAMPS | s.kerr
Tumblr media
summary: you are about to play the game of your life and sam is right there on the sidelines cheering for you. [1.6k words]
pairing: netball!reader x sam kerr
notes: netball!reader is my new favourite thing
YOU KNEW THAT AUGUST would be a busy month for you and sam. she and the matildas had just progressed out of the group stages in the world up, but so had you.
at 18 you received the call-up to play for the australian diamonds netball team. you played in the constellation cup against the silver ferns and came out on top, a new name in national netball; people loved you.
you played through the year with the diamonds, often playing with your state team too. but in the january after your first cup, you tore your acl. only 19, people thought you were done for with the way you went down. it had the nation talking about netball, about how its rising star had fallen from the sky.
an estimated 6-9 months in recovery became 12 and you hadn't picked up a ball since; resenting the sport that you loved. once cleared to return to netball, you were eager to return, to show everyone they had no reason to doubt you; that you would play for australia again.
the diamonds kept you in the reserves your first season back in 2015, too nervous about your leg. you got to watch the diamonds take home the world cup on home soil. whilst you couldn't play for the nation, you played at suncorp level once again- this time, smashing your scoring record. you shot 653 goals in the regular season for the thunderbirds, beating your personal best of 597.
you were back and netball fans around the nation knew it.
the next season you were back working with the diamonds, making your way towards one goal- playing in the world cup.
when it came around, you were picked in the starting seven- shooting goals for your country. you broke your personal best again, 653 becoming 672. you were approaching most goals scored ever by a singular player.
but second place smacked you and your girls harshly back into reality, you left with no cup. you left runners up. clips of you crying on the court went viral, your fans knew what that game meant to you. you were broken to lose.
the next year, you were signed to nike. you became a spokesperson for their newest line of netball shoes that they had manufactured and your face was plastered all over the country. billboards, posters, and any advertisement had you on the front.
soon, nike called you to a shoot with all of their major athletes, wanting to showcase the faces of their campaigns; and that’s when you met sam.
your entire world shifted. she was funny, confident, beautiful and smart; and you fell for her straight away. netball and sam were the only two things on your mind.
two months into being friends, she asked you to be her girlfriend.
news outlets were noticing how much time you both started spending together, how you were always in the stands at each others games if they didn’t conflict with the other persons. the instagram stories, being in the background of each others posts. people began to catch on.
but when you scored the winning goal at the 2022 commonwealth games against jamaica, sam and the rest of your teams family rushed the court; and she kissed you right there, on live television.
the secret was out, and you and sam quickly became one of australia’s favourite couples.
you both constantly showed off your unwavering amount of support for each others careers. matilda’s fans adored seeing you in the documentary and revelled in getting a peak into how crazy your life with sam really is. constantly travelling, constantly trying to make time for each other.
you both knew that your careers meant the world to you. you were determined to go back to the world cup in 2023 and win. she wanted to do the same.
but you both always knew what you went home to; each other, and that was enough for you both.
you worked hard to get picked back into the starting seven for the world cup, your coaches noticed your commitment and dedication- you were put in the line up, no questions asked.
you worked through the group stages and through the second stage, then the play-offs. the grand final was now staring you in the eyes, and england would be tough to beat, but you weren't planning on taking it easy on them.
you woke up early to get to the training centre with the girls, letting sam sleep in. you talked tactics, did some drills and watched through some past matches from the cup to talk about focuses for the final. you always got nervous before a big game, but this one had skyrocketed your anxiety.
sam had been called by your teammate ruby, when she found you throwing up in the bathroom for the second time that day.
"you're crazy if you think you're playing, you're obviously not well," her voice crackled through ruby's phone. you knew that you were fine, it was just the nerves- they were knocking you onto your ass.
"you're crazy if you think i'm not," you bit back, sam surprised by the bite in your tone. "i ate heaps at breakfast, and then ran sucicides for 25 minutes, sam" you explained. ruby shot you a look, knowing you were lying to your girlfriend. "i'm fine," you emphasised.
"you need to call it if you're not y/n" she said, sat with her elbows against her knees and her hand over her mouth. sat back in the hotel, she began to bite her nails. knowing that you could be bleeding out, and you would still play in this final. nothing would stop you. they would have to drag you out kicking and screaming.
"would you?" you ask her, eyebrows raised. sam didn't respond, only sitting in guilty silence. sam has played games ill on multiple occasions. through gastro, the flu and covid. you sat by her side every time and knew that, inevitably, she would be walking onto that pitch; too strong willed for her own good. you weren't much better.
"sam?" you called her name.
"no.." she sighed, knowing you were right. "no, i wouldn't" she said. "but even when i was sick i still told you if i was or not, so tell me; are you okay?"
you sighed, resting your head against the tiled walls of the bathroom. "i think it's just nerves," you admitted, "i-" you sighed again- "i'm shitting myself, i'm so nervous."
"baby" she tutted, "you're gonna be great. you've got this in the bag, yeah?"
"don't say that," you shook your head, "we lost to them last time."
it was true. in the group stages, you did- you lost to england.
"yeah, by a fucking point y/n"
"a point that i missed," you felt that loss heavy on your shoulders.
"she contacted you and the ref didn't call it," sam argued.
"i still missed"
"and you're not going to today," she told you, "you're gonna beat that pb, you're 33 off beating it". it was true, you were once again nearing your personal best for most goals in a season. "and i know that you're gonna shoot more than 33 tonight," she smiled.
"you think?" you whispered.
"i know"
and she was right. just as the half time whistle sounded, you had a penalty shot. the crowd cheered as you set up for your shot. sam was starting to stand up in her seat just a row behind the bench. she was cheering louder than anyone else there. you heard her 'come on, y/n' over everyone else in the crowd. macca and alanna sat on either side of sam, mary, hayley and steph there too to cheer you on.
you took a breath, straightened your elbow and shot with one hand, other arm by your side- your signature.
nothing but net.
the crowd went crazy. steph, your goal attack, engulfed you in her embrace. the england defenders congratulated you. you turned to where sam was sat and smile. she was now standing up straight celebrating with her teammates. she held up her first and met your gaze.
you smiled again, pretending to shoot another goal. she whistled out at you and pointed to you. the cameras caught it all. the crowd cheering at your interaction.
australia led at halftime 27-23.
in the last quarter, you were on fire. you shot every goal you went for, and the wheels fell off for england.
when the final whistle sounded, you were a world champ.
your team defeated england 61-45. your subs rushed the court, so did your coaching staff. you screamed, running to meet your teammates.
sam watched on as tears streamed down your face. liz, your captain, passed you the trophy as it was brought out for your team. you raised it up, the crowd knowing how special this was for you. after a long journey, you finally got to hold that cup. you looked up into the stands, to find sam. she was crying too, wiping tears from her eyes as macca hugged her. you sent her a smile, tears still streaming down your face as you cried. you blew her a kiss with your other hand, and she caught it, holding up her hand.
“holy shit!” you shouted over to her.
“i knew you could do it!” she called back. you laughed at her before being brought back into the moment with your team, only now- you were world champs.
and even though the title rested on your shoulders, you couldn't wait to go home with sam tonight- you were always a champion to her, title or not.

Hancock Prospecting receives $15 million in netball sponsorship
“Hancock and its chief executive, Ms. Reinhart, consider it unnecessary to use sports organizations as a vehicle for social or political reasons,” the statement read. There are more targeted and real ways of advancing social or political issues without reference to virtue or self-promotion. “The truth is that sponsorship is an integral part of sports organizations – for full-time professionals all the way to the grassroots level. Hancock has taken care and will always work to ensure that its sponsorship is spent on and for athletes. “There are more targeted and real ways of advancing social or political issues without reference to virtue.” Hancock Exploration The miner also dismissed reports that it had asked the Diamonds to wear its crest during the Constellation Cup Series when playing outside. “Hancock will never want athletes to wear the Hancock crest unless the athletes are proud of it,” the statement read. Tensions between the board and the Netball Players Association was another factor in Hancock’s decision, according to their first statement. loading “Hancock and Roy Hill were not informed prior to the proposed partnerships of the complexity of the issues that exist between Netball Australia and the Players Association,” the statement read. “This includes efforts by the players’ union to obtain a very large wage increase during a period when the sport is in financial flux, and is unable to provide such a raise.” While the initial deal was withdrawn, Hancock has offered 4-month sponsorship of Netball Australia and Netball WA, should their players wish to accept it, while the board of directors arranges alternative funding. Netball Australia has been contacted for comment. Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

The last whistle blows on former Australian Diamond Natalie Medhurst's 17-year netball profession - ABC News
Tumblr media
Maturing in a small nation community, Natalie Medhurst is the very first to confess her rise to elite level sport came as a surprise.
Secret points: Recently, the previous Diamond, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and multi-time World Cup gamer revealed her retirement from an expert netball profession spanning 17 years. The third-most-capped national league player required to the court 235 times and scored 4,415 objectives across Commonwealth Bank Trophy, ANZ Champion and Suncorp Super Netball competitions.Medhurst, who was born in Melbourne, returned home to complete her profession with the Collingwood Magpies
in her native Victoria. Grateful for family assistance When the 178 centimetres goal shooter was simply three, her household evacuated and relocated to the small south-east South Australian town of Millicent, where she ended up being included in local nation sport."My moms and dads ran the Somerset Hotel in Millicent so we also lived there(at the hotel). It was awesome, we liked it as kids, it was
different house compared to most and my parents were extremely hectic,"Medhurst said. She said the family's commitment to supporting her in regional sports such as Little Athletics and basketball ultimately relied on taking return roadway journeys to Adelaide for state team trials in netball."Daddy was heavily associated with the footy club, and footy and netball work together so that's actually where whatever began and it removed from there," she said. "The truth the family made time to take me to the city for trials and competitions, those eight-hour journeys, which they provided for over two years ... it was a substantial effort by them, and I'm very grateful." Profession went beyond dreams Medhurst started her expert career in 2004 with the Adelaide Thunderbirds, before heading to the Queensland Firebirds in 2010
, followed by stints with West Coast Fever and the Collingwood Magpies. The Thunderbirds club champion and two-time winner of the Tanya Denver medal and the Adelaide Marketer player of the year (2006 and 2007 )came as highlights in the early days, but it was in 2007 when she initially wore the green and gold as Diamond # 144."I do not actually know what I dreamt of or what I wished to accomplish from netball, however it certainly went beyond anything I ever thought was possible, "she said. Medhurst represented Australia with the Diamonds on 86 occasions and went on to win 3 Netball World Cup gold medals, one Commonwealth Games gold medal, one Commonwealth Games silver medal and 6 Constellation Cup titles.Throughout her Diamonds profession, she scored 1,166 goals for Australia and captained the Diamonds on one occasion. Cool under pressure Assessing her rise in the sport and time at the top, she said her competitive streak married well with a naturally laid-back design on court."Somebody as soon as informed me I was so easygoing, I was horizontal.""I was really cooled out on court, I think some individuals
confused that and believed I was lazy ... however I've always loved the pressure-- that's most likely why I'm a shooter.""Contending was the finest thing; game day and those big video games ... are something I'm actually
going to miss." She stated she was most happy of seeing how far the sport had actually come, with a clearer pathway for young professional athletes looking to make it to the top.
" I believe a lot of people don't understand that to make it to this level is a great deal of effort, luck and timing, and it's your ability to make that dedication," Medhurst said."
... However a thing that helped me a lot was that I played a great deal of sports-- I wasn't fixated on netball at a young age. "And for the next generation of nation kids tossing the ball around an asphalt court, Medhurst has this to state:"Realise it is exceptionally effort; it takes a lot of devotion-- and from parents too. So for the kids, make sure you thank your moms and dads."
Young gamers follow footsteps Donna Denton, who is a grade coach with the Millicent Saints, said Medhurst had actually inspired a new generation of young players.
"When you do see some country netballers go on and move to the city and do so well, it's constantly helpful for country ladies wanting to better their netball and understanding that's a path [for them]," Denton stated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She said the municipality of Millicent still claimed Medhurst as one of their own." Obviously there's an eager interest in our town following her
,"Denton stated." There's been a lot of us that have actually enjoyed her journey ... and there's women that appreciate her to possibly one day do the exact same."
Netball Australia president Marne Fechner thanked Medhurst for her service to the sport.
"Nat has made a massive contribution to Netball in Australia, both on and off the court, and we praise her on an incredible career," she said.
"Her ability, athleticism and grace on the court were an advantage to view, and her advocacy and enthusiasm as a leader of the Australian Netball Players' Association have helped pave the way for the next generation of netballers. We thank her for her contribution to this fantastic video game."

Entry 11 - Aussie Diamonds Constellation Cup #FeelTheRivalry
The Australian netball team are playing off against the New Zealand Silver Ferns for the Constellation Cup. The Constellation Cup is played between Australia and New Zealand every year and play off in four games.
Australia’s social media pages promoted the event by using #FeelTheRivalry to generate excitement and ignite the historic Australia vs New Zealand rivalry.
Tumblr media
Using rivalry theme throughout the Constellation Cup was a good selling point for building anticipation for the tournament and they were able to leverage ticket sales through their social media accounts.
Tumblr media
Some of Australia’s best players also play for Suncorp Super Netball teams. This meant these these clubs are supporting the Aussie Diamonds. Their social media accounts were able to get involved with the #FeelTheRivalry campaign and post about the Constellation Cup to their social media accounts. This would get the tournament extra exposure to those who may follow Suncorp Super Netball social media accounts.

Amazing Grace Noyak is too sweet for Australian diamonds as New Zealands Silver Ferns take home the win
Grace Nweke’s flawless shooting performance helped the Silver Ferns defeat Australia 52-48, putting New Zealand on the brink of defending the Constellation Cup. He put Noike at a clinic in Tauranga, hitting 37 of 37 to give New Zealand their second straight win in a four-game streak. Australian Amy Parmenter in a match against New Zealand on Sunday.attributed to him:GT The Commonwealth Games Diamond League champions must win both games at home next week and come from behind to reclaim the trophy. Off the field, Australia also has other off-court issues to be resolved, including a player protest in response to Netball Australia’s new sponsor: mining giant Hancock Prospecting from Gina Rinehart. ABC reports that Diamonds are refusing to wear a new uniform bearing the Hancock logo, and are siding with Aboriginal player Donnell Walm, who objected due to the company’s record in Aboriginal cases. The decision, made in the hours leading up to Wednesday’s opening game, sparked a quick search for a new group and could explain the worst opening quarter in Constellation Cup history, when Australia trailed 20-9 before dropping to 56-48. Players decided to continue playing dress-up without Hancock’s care, and would return to the topic after the series ended. On Sunday, Australia were bright and alert from the first pass, thanks in part to Steve Wood’s improved shooting effort. Goal attack, Gretal Poeta, who is on maternity leave, shot 68 per cent in the first game but was superb under goal in the second, hitting 21 of 23, including many from long distance. 7 World’s Best Netball Players
Tumblr media
1) Laura Langman, New Zealand/Northern Mystics
Langman won this race easily - six out of the 10 panellists put Langman as their top choice and she featured in the top three for the other four.
Johannsen said Langman was her No1 choice because she is “easily the most consistent ANZ Championship and international player going around, the ever-reliable Langman has established herself as the Silver Ferns most valuable commodity. Her fearless drives on attack and ability to hit the top of the circle at speed is a marvel, while her ability to wear an opponent down by running with them all day is a huge asset on defence”.
Atkinson, a superb centre for England in her time, said “being a former midcourt player myself I would always fear but relish the challenge of playing against Laura.”
Swannell said she is “the first name on any team sheet” and Gordon added Langman is “like a Duracell bunny.”
While Millard asks “when did you ever hear of Laura Langman having a bad game?” Personally, never - I agree, Langman is a phenomenon.
The one missing item in Langman’s cabinet is a World Cup – for this reason alone, the New Zealand side should not be underestimated going into Sydney 2015.
2) Geva Mentor, England/Melbourne Vixens
Thank goodness world netball has Mentor – the phenomenal goalkeeper came a clear second on this list.
The Englishwoman heritage is clean, fair and somehow manages to pull off deflections and intercepts which even surprises herself at times; her aerial skills are the perfect foil to a game becoming dominated by tall shooters. Her temperament, footwork and positioning remain unrivalled in international netball. “Intimidates her opponents before the games even start. Amazing timing, great strength and agility make her the perfect GK” Hornibrook told the Guardian.
3) Natalie Medhurst, Australia/West Coast Fever
“Cool countenance under pressure, accuracy, and adaptability”. Millard sums up Medhurst very well. Indeed, Medhurst is easily the world’s best goal attack according to the panel. She featured in nearly everybody’s top 10, and has the full range of skills; long-bombs, feeding and court play.
Dana Johannsen said that “Medhurst is the latest in a long line of wily goal attacks that Australia has produced. A clever play-maker, Medhurst's speed, footwork and deft passing make her very tough for opposition defences to contain. She has the ability to play both a feeding role, as well as step up and shoulder a lot of the shooting burden when needed. For someone that plays the game at top speed, her shooting stats are remarkably accurate.”
4) Casey Kopua, New Zealand/ Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic
Captain Casey is incredibly agile for a player of her height and build. As a player Kopua has it all, including smarts and great leadership qualities; Atkinson said Kopua is “still the world’s best defender with unbelievable athleticism and circle defensive understanding”.
If there is a weakness in Kopua’s game is that she can often appear despondent on court. Perhaps, it’s her perfectionism or maybe she just loves the game so much it hurts.
5) Jhaniele Fowler, Jamaica/Southern Steel
It’s next to impossible to convincingly beat a team with Fowler on it. The only Jamaican player on the list, the 198cm goal shooter “dominated the 2013 ANZ Championships. Has an obvious height advantage over her opponents, but has strong hands and great elevation,” according to Selina Hornibrook.
Colyn Gordon added Fowler “put herself in the shop window with strong performances against all defensive styles. Very difficult to mark as she has a large well-built frame, can elevate with great Velcro-like hands.”
6) Irene van Dyk, New Zealand/Central Pulse
Van Dyk, retire? No way. According to our distinguished panel, She is still the Silver Fern’s best goaling option by a long shot. Van Dyk’s timing on the baseline and flawless scoring under the post will most likely see her return to the Silver Ferns starting seven come the Commonwealth Games – but don’t quote me on that.
Harriet Millard told the Guardian Van Dyk “is the best example in our sport of sportsmanship, coupled with skill accuracy, dedication and brilliant attitude – always smiling.”
 7) Renae Hallinan,Australia/Adelaide Thunderbirds
You have to understand netball to understand why Hallinan is such a great player. Unassuming Hallinan is a dogged one-on-one defender who shuts down wing attacks, putting pressure on goal attacks to play two positions and leaving them unable to put up shots. See the recent Constellation Cup or the last ANZ final for examples.
But you don’t have to understand netball to know how great it is to see this year’s Australian player of the year back at the top. Hallinan was benched in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and dropped for the team for the next two years. Her comeback late last year was truly inspirational, no matter what you do in life.

Ashleigh Brazill goes back to Australian netball group thanks to Collingwood AFLW career - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).
Tumblr media
Upgraded October 19, 2019 07:40:39
Diamonds netballer Ashleigh Brazill matured playing Aussie guidelines, but netball was where the ladies's chances were. With netball being the dominant ladies's code and clearest avenue to success, the self-confessed footy natural, selected the court over the field-- now she does both."I am lucky at the moment I get to [
play both], but I would love to see it where footy is so strong that you can't do it,"Brazill said.In netball, Brazill came through the NSW junior ranks prior to playing for the NSW Swifts in 2010, then the West Coast Fever and currently the Collingwood Magpies. She debuted for the national group in 2015. Her AFLW career kicked off last year when she joined Collingwood and was called as an All-Australian this year.It is a jam-packed, year-round schedule for the 29-year-old, with the AFLW season played throughout netball's preseason, but juggling both codes through one club makes it manageable."I am quite fortunate that both netball and football fall under the one Collingwood banner, I really get taken care of, I have a physio that manages
me for both sides,"Brazill stated."It is hard when I get taken out of specific things, however that's what occurs when you do both." As females's sport ends up being more expert, she believes the days of playing dual codes might be passing away as the leagues are set to" clash"." We will have that discussion soon, being in the Diamonds colours-- there may be a bit of crossover, however not at the moment, "she said.Brazill was dropped from the Australian group 4 years back, however has actually made an exceptional return this year, taking advantage of a positional modification to centre." It kind of seems like my very first time ever, the last time I played I came in through injury, so to be here on my own merit at 29 is actually a dream come true,"she said.Brazill was instrumental in the Diamonds'48-- 42 win over New Zealand's Silver Ferns this week in the 2nd Constellation Cup Test. The series is currently 1-1, with the final 2 video games being played in Sydney this Sunday, then Perth a week later. She feels footy is the secret to her renewal.
"I simply love it, it makes me feel younger, the football makes me like netball more and netball makes me enjoy football more-- so I remain in a good location,"Brazill said. She has needed to alter her body for footy, putting on five kgs, however that may have in fact assisted her in netball."I've seen it on the netball court, I feel a lot more powerful and it's definitely changed my
game, "she said.A big year off the court In 2016, Brazill ended up being the first elite netballer in Australia to openly state that she was gay, at a time when she feared she might lose her enthusiasm and income."My greatest worry coming out was not being able to be a netballer, which hasn't happened,"she stated."I am extremely lucky that my sport and colleagues have always been accepting and promote the greatest thing
is be who you are."Today she believes being freely gay is more accepted."I haven't lived my life waving a rainbow flag or been in any parades, I just live my life the way I understand how, by caring Brooke, and I want people
take a look at that as a normal, caring relationship, "she said.Brazill and her other half are set to welcome their first child in December.
"Ten more weeks up until we are moms and dads is mind blowing, however I 'd give sport away just to have a baby,"she sai.The couple decided Brooke would bring the kid
so Ashleigh could continue to compete.
