Midnight Sky "Miley Cyrus"
Tumblr media
“Midnight Sky” is a song by American singer Miley Cyrus, released on August 14, 2020, by RCA Records as the lead single from her upcoming seventh studio album She Is Miley Cyrus. The disco, synth-pop, electropop, and pop rock song was written by Cyrus, Ali Tamposi, Ilsey Juber and Jonathan Bellion with song’s producers: Louis Bell and Andrew Watt.
Background and release
On August 4, 2020, Cyrus posted on social media a clip of the music video for her song “Start All Over” with the hashtags “#sheiscoming” and “#butforrealthistime”, in reference to her long-delayed seventh studio album She Is Miley Cyrus. Later that day, she shared a preview of “Midnight Sky” on social media. The track was released on August 14 as planned. The song and video were inspired by other female musicians, such as Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett and Debbie Harry, specifically, Nicks’ song “Edge of Seventeen”. Cyrus reached out to Nicks before release, asking for her blessing of the song. In an interview with Hits 1, the singer explained the song’s background, stating:
You just definitely want to feel like you are just in control of your own life and not trying to control anyone else’s, so for me to be able to really have a good, clear understanding of the last two years, which there was some traumatic experiences – losing the house in Malibu and going through a really public breakup – I think I just really needed some clarity. And so it was just really important to me to be able to like really sit with my thoughts.
Composition and lyrics
“Midnight Sky” is an uptempo “Prince-esque” disco, pop, synth-pop, electropop and pop rock song with “gritty”, “raw” arena rock vocals and “pristinely glossy” production. Written in the key of E minor, it has a tempo of 110 beats per minute, with Cyrus’ vocal range spanning from the low note of D3 to the high note of D5.
Its lyrics are inspired by Cyrus’ divorce from Liam Hemsworth and relationships with Kaitlynn Carter and Cody Simpson, and show the singer “tak[ing] back her narrative” and being confident in herself. She also revealed in an interview in Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast that her desire was for the song to be an anthem that normalized Pansexuality and provided visibility for those living in fear of rejection over their authentic selves.
Cyrus described the song as a “reflection of everyone kind of having this personal kind of woke moment” during an interview on the Zach Sang Show, where she declared:
I feel like a lot of us are waking up. And you know, the midnight sky, I think is kind of a road that feels like it could be nice to take with our head up in the clouds. You know, I feel like right now in society, we don’t want to live with our heads in the clouds. But I think in time that’s maybe why I’ve created worlds like this. Because this is kind of my idea of living with my head in the clouds of my own kind of fantasy and the world I wanna create.
So I think that it’s a cool message, to tell people to create the environment and the world that you wanna live in and I think that’s happening on a very political level right now. But also we can do it especially in this quarantine time, in these intimate spaces of our home that we have a place that feels like we’ve created our own environment, our own head in the clouds, so this is mine.
Critical reception
“Midnight Sky” has received critical acclaim from music critics upon its release. Alex Gallagher of NME described the song as an “assertive disco-tinged bop”. Praising its lyrics he stated, “The lyrics to ‘Midnight Sky’ see Cyrus asserting control and independence, with the singer declaring ‘I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone/ Oh no, I don’t need to be loved by you,’ on the track’s rousing chorus”.
Michael Cragg of The Guardian called the song a “disco-tinged, post-divorce banger”, commenting that it “sounds suitably refreshed after the double-meh of 2017’s country singer rebirth and last year’s, erm, ‘Cattitude’, ‘Midnight Sky’ is everything all that wasn’t: impassioned, energised and delivered by someone brave enough to sport a platinum-blonde mullet”.
Nina Corcoran of Consequence of Sound described “Midnight Sky” as a “Flashy Synthpop Number” stating “Midnight Sky is a flashy synthpop number that’s arguably sleeker than anything Cyrus has released before”.
Mike Wass of Idolator described the song as a “Dreamy Disco Anthem”. He praised the personal lyrics stating, “The first taste of MC7 is a deeply autobiographical account of the pop star’s emotional journey post-divorce”.
Promotion
A preview of “Midnight Sky” was released to coincide with the launch of Instagram Reels, a video-sharing service similar to TikTok, on August 6, 2020. On August 31, the Midnight Sky Truck, an experiential pop-up, appeared in Los Angeles, with various influencers sharing photographs and videos of themselves in the truck.
Commercial performance
In the US, “Midnight Sky” debuted at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Cyrus’ 14th Top 20 hit in the country and 50th entry on the chart, making her one of the artists with most Hot 100 entries. The song also became her best solo debut on the chart since “Malibu”, which took 10th place in 2017, although in the meantime the singer had also reached 13th place with “Don’t Call Me Angel”, along with Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey.
In its first week “Midnight Sky” was the 20th most heard song in the United States in streaming and the third most downloaded legally. The single debuted at number three on Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart after only Cardi B’s “WAP” with Megan Thee Stallion and Morgan Wallen’s “7 Summers”, another release of the week.
In the United Kingdom, the song debuted at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart for the issue dated August 21, 2020 and reached the number 10 in its fourth week there, becoming Cyrus’ sixth Top 10 hit in the country.
“Midnight Sky” also debuted at number 16 in Australia, number 13 in Canada and number four in Scotland.
Music video
An accompanying, self-directed music video for “Midnight Sky” was released on August 14, 2020. It features Cyrus in various settings, such as a room with mirrors, a “colorful” gumball pit and a neon disco setting with streamers and Technicolor statues of jungle animals, while wearing a mullet, glittery makeup, black Chanel bodysuit, Swarovski gem-covered black gloves.
In a radio interview with Chris Kelly for Toronto’s KiSS 92.5, Cyrus said that the bubblegum in the video represents “[her] being lost in the bubblegum pop scene” and that the disco ball reflected that “it’s this kind of broken pieces that were put back together to make something whole again”.
Live performances
Cyrus performed “Midnight Sky” for the first time at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on August 30, where she swung on a disco ball, in reference to her 2013 song, “Wrecking Ball”. The next day, she performed the song on Live Lounge. On September 10, she performed the song at the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Madonna gives emotional speech at GLAAD Awards
Tumblr media
Madonna, a pioneer for gay rights, accepted the Advocate for Change Award at the 2019 GLAAD Media Awards with a rousing speech that went from playful to emotional, bringing the audience to its feet.
The 60-year-old pop icon turned heads as she walked to her table at the Hilton Midtown in New York on Saturday night, before taking the stage to celebrate her three decades of advocacy work in the LGBTQ community.
“Why have I always fought for change? That’s a hard question to answer. It’s like trying to explain the importance of reading or the need to love. Growing up I always felt like an outsider, like I didn’t fit in. It wasn’t because I didn’t shave under my armpits, I just didn’t fit in, OK,” she said. “The first gay man I ever met was named Christopher Flynn. He was my ballet teacher in high school and he was the first person that believed in me, that made me feel special as a dancer, as an artist and as a human being. I know this sounds trivial and superficial, but he was the first man to tell me I was beautiful.”
Madonna went on to say Flynn took her to her first gay club in Detroit, and that the evening changed her life.
“For the first time I saw men kissing men, girls dressed like boys, boys wearing hot pants, insane, incredible dancing and a kind of freedom and joy and happiness that I had never seen before,” she said. “I finally felt like I was not alone, that it was OK to be different and to not be like everybody else. And that after all, I was not a freak. I felt at home, and it gave me hope.”
Madonna also said Flynn pushed her to leave Michigan and go to New York to pursue her dreams. And when she arrived in the Big Apple in 1977, she was in awe with all New York had to offer — diversity, creativity — but she also learned about the AIDS epidemic.
“The plague that moved in like a black cloud over New York City and in a blink of an eye,” she said and snapped her fingers, “took out all of my friends.”
“After I lost my best friend and roommate Martin Burgoyne and then Keith Haring — happy birthday Keith — I decided to take up the bull horn and really fight back,” she added.
Madonna, teary-eyed from her seat, received the award from Anderson Cooper, Mykki Blanco and Rosie O’Donnell, who gave a powerful speech about how Madonna helped her become more comfortable in her own skin.
“So here I was — VG, very gay — dating a man and I went to Madonna for advice,” said O’Donnell, who co-starred in 1992’s “A League of Their Own” with the singer. “I was questioning and unsure, my gay life was blossoming but I didn’t quite know what to do. And she told me, ‘Rosie, just follow your heart’ — advice I still follow to this day.”
The multi-hour GLAAD event also gave awards to Andy Cohen, the FX series “Pose” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Samantha Bee, the film “Boy Erased,” CNN’s Don Lemon and R&B singer Janelle Monae. The event will air on Logo on May 12.
Despite winning seven Grammys, two Golden Globes and countless other honors, Madonna said getting GLAAD’s Advocate for Change Award has a special place in her heart.
“Because it’s recognition of years and years of work that I’ve done over three decades. It’s not anything superficial,” Madonna said in an interview with The Associated Press after receiving her honor. “It means something to me because I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into all the work that I’ve done over the years advocating for change.”
Madonna will release her 14th album, “Madame X,” on June 14. It was inspired from living in Lisbon, Portugal, for the last few years and includes collaborations with Colombian singer Maluma, Migos rapper Quavo, Brazilian singer Anitta, and singer-rapper-songwriter Swae Lee of the duo Rae Sremmurd.
The album also features the track “Batuka,” co-written by Madonna’s 13-year-old son, David Banda.
“That was a family affair — the call and response song,” Madonna said. “(David) likes to take more of the credit than the rest of my children. It’s always fun to work with my kids, especially David.”

NEO Foundation and Ontology [ONT] Foundation are now Co-Funders
NEO Foundation and Ontology Foundation contributed RMB 4 million for the co-funding event of their Joint Task Force, after signing a Memorandum of understanding [MoU]. The Joint Task Force will ace the development of API standardization, a sharing ecosystem of smart contract, building open standards for the smart contract, and cross-chain technology innovation.
Ontology is a different entity from both Onchain and NEO. Ontology is a network of blockchains, rather than one single blockchain, and it has been designed to help migration of proprietary enterprise platforms onto a distributed ledger model without compromising them.
NEO Smart Economy, @NEO_Blockchain tweeted today:
“NEO Foundation and Ontology Foundation to Co-Fund a Joint Task Force”
NEO, along with the caption attached to the article of their page, also gives a brief introduction to their joint venture.
VG, a Twitterati commented on the tweet saying:
“Keep doing reorganizations….how about ur share holders….price of NEO keeps hitting a new low everyday…”
The main work of the joint working group will focus on the standardized technology interface. They will work on the unification of the NEO and Ontology underlying data interfaces and network protocols. This is the cornerstone of the co-construction of a large ecosystem.
The Joint working group will provide a unified API interface, share some SDKs and development tools, and be more friendly to application developers. The group will also explore and implement a variety of encryption algorithms in blockchain applications. The goal is to achieve a unified account address encoding method that is more friendly to end users.
The Joint Task Force is made up of over 10 people, most of whom are core developers from NEO Global Development [NGD] and Ontology, along with some selected community members. Senior blockchain developers at NEO like Weng Junjie, Tan Yuan, and Peter Lin will also be joining.
In the future, the joint working group will run normally and carry out more cooperation and exploration in the bottom of the blockchain and applications.
At the time of writing, NEO is ranked #11 on the CoinMarketCap with a market cap of $3.3 billion and is trading at a price of $51.81 to a token. It has seen a fall of 3.80% in the past 24 hours.

Cratedigging in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Second Beat Records
Copenhagen’s Second Beat Records Store Front
Related to Elements: Crate Digging, DJ
Denmark native and fellow crate digger Jesper was kind enough to provide a nice, short and sweet guest blogger’s Record Store Review for one of his preferred local record sellers.   Besides being a well–versed jazz head and knowledgeable record collector, he’s also producer of the original diggin‘ documentary Beat Diggin’ available at crateescaperecords.com  Jesper writes:
One of my favorite local used record shops.  They carry pretty much all genres of modern rhythmic music from Hip Hop, soul, funk, jazz and rock, to afro, reggae, electronic, punk and world music.  Sometimes you can even find some avant garde or classical.  It’s a pretty small space, but there are usually new records in several times every week, and the prices are fair.  Sometimes they price a lot of stuff down to move stock faster and make room for more.  And when they get bigger collections in, you can usually get a nice discount, if you buy a bunch.  There’s usually also a bunch of bargain bins on the floor with the occasional odd gem.  A great thing for hiphop heads is that they don’t seem to take hiphop very serious, so it’s often priced pretty cheap (yay!)
The Jazz section holds vintage, jazz funk and avantgarde
I highly recommend this shop for any digger or collector visiting Copenhagen.  The only setback is that there’s no listening station, but they will usually play you a couple of tracks on the turntable, if you ask nicely.  As a service to customers they have started posting about new arrivals on their Facebook group.
Psych, prog and punk is found in the Rock section
They also sell used books (mainly music, art and philosophy), collectable comics and vintage toys.  And when you’re in the area, you can take a stroll though the nearby Assistens cemetery, where a number of jazz greats like Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster and Kenny Drew have found their eternal resting place.

Who decides how rare a new coin issue should be?
The brilliant marketing bureaucrats at the U.S. Mint have now created their second rare palladium Eagle in 2018 with a 15,000 mintage limit, presumably as an early Christmas gift to coin dealers and wholesalers.
I went online at 12 p.m. and attempted to buy the coin. I thought I had successfully purchased the coin, but at 12:06 I received a message that the coin was no longer available. This has happened all too often in the last few years and must end.
It is unethical for the Mint, a U.S. government agency, to create “rarities” with unrealistic mintage limits as obvious gifts for dealers and wholesalers who line up their families and friends to grab the entire production in a few minutes and then sell them to collectors for a large profit. If there are to be profits, they must inure to the benefit of the federal government. The Inspector General of the Treasury should investigate the individuals who made the scarcity decisions for the palladium coin, the gold dime, and several other recent issues. They are either facilitating impermissible favors for their dealer friends or they are simply stupid. Either way, something must be done about this because it happens once or twice a year.
A rational Mint policy would provide a 30- to 60-day pre-order period for all potentially rare issues, with subsequent production only to fill those orders. Under that policy, there would be no waste for the Mint, no unsatisfied customers, and no unethical gifts to coin dealers and wholesalers.

Cashless future will arrive sooner than many think
I just read a review on CNN.com of a new Amazon Go store, the future of retail. Here are some pertinent excerpts:
“You won’t see a single cashier, cash register, or self-service checkout stand. Such things have no place in the future. You simply walk in, grab what you need, and go. Amazon bills your credit card as you pass through the turnstile on your way out. Moments later, an app in your phone provides a receipt detailing what you’ve bought, what you paid, and even how long you spent inside.
“Imagine a world where you never wait in line, or even open your wallet. A world where stores know so much about you that they recommend products and lead you right to them. A world where shoplifting, which according to the National Retail Federation drains some $47 billion from retailers nationwide each year, is all but impossible.”
I can’t help thinking about all of the readers of Numismatic News who think they can’t live without the billions of cents that are minted every year. People, like it or not, your way of life is changing. Welcome to the future, and the future is here.
Peter Glassman Schaumburg, Ill.
Restaurant finds begin with Wheat cent in a tip cup
My wife and I ate at a restaurant in Eden, N.C. I went to pay at the register when I saw a wheat cent in the tip cup. I pulled it out and noticed the other coin in the tip cup was also a wheat cent. I asked the cashier if I could exchange them, and she said she had more in the register. She then proceeded to pull out many more wheat cents for me. I asked where she got them, and she said the bank down the road. At the bank, they were kind enough to give 10 rolls for $5, which produced only normal finds. But the ones I got at the restaurant were G-VG: 1912-D, 1921-S, 1929-D, 1939-S; VF or better: 1942-D, 1947-S, 1951-S, 1954-S, plus many common ones starting in the teens, which I did not put into 2x2s. Keep searching, they’re still out there!

More readers should try collecting lowball coins
I was really tickled to read Mike Walker’s Viewpoint in the current (Oct. 2, 2018) issue on looking for “Lowball” coins.
I have been chasing these “less than perfect” critters for over 15 years and have had an absolute ball doing so. It really charges my batteries when I see the look on a dealer’s face when I go into his shop and ask to see his junk box because “I have a Type Set I want to downgrade.”
I explain that I’m assembling “The World’s Worst Type Set” and could probably use some of the doggies he has in the box way in the back of his safe.
My M.O. is that I only want coins that will grade (by PCGS) in FR-02 or PO-01. This sounds easy, but in order to qualify for a PCGS holder, the coin must have only good, honest wear, with no damage. Also, the date must be identifiable, as well as the mintmark, if it has one. This eliminates about 95 percent of the low-grade coins for consideration, with the remaining 5 percent probably falling under the pocket piece category.
If one takes up the challenge, one will soon find that this is true collecting at its finest. You must be just as critical of the prospective purchase as you would for a Mint State coin, but only after a very severe mindset readjustment. An AG-03 or better coin is “too good,” and one with the appropriate wear but with scratches, a ding, or corrosion, is unacceptable. Later-date coins are especially difficult to locate for obvious reasons, so if you uncover a qualifying FR-02 or PO-01 Ike or SBA, you’ve hit the jackpot!
As did Mike, I encourage collectors to take up the gauntlet on this and search out those “beautiful” lowball coins – I guarantee that it will be every bit as challenging as finding “normal” coins for your collection, and you’ll have as much or more fun in the search!

How does numismatic activity create unity in our clubs?
As the contact person to the American Numismatic Association for The South Brevard Coin Club, the ANA sent me the questions for the 2017 Trivia Quiz just two days before our June meeting.
Remembering the year prior and how one of our members wound up answering almost all of the questions himself, I admit my very first reaction was to ignore the quiz. Those questions are difficult. But better thinking came to mind and, at the club meeting that Wednesday, I presented copies of the questions to the members.
I further went on to say that if we want to take the challenge, the best way might be for each of us to take a question and then commit to completing the answer in the next few days. We agreed to go with that plan.
Reading each question out loud, one of the members volunteered to take that question and answer it by Saturday, just three days away. On Thursday, I had received six answers by late that afternoon. I asked Jack, our secretary, to put out a notice of where we were and to keep going. We sent another update Friday afternoon. By Saturday night, we had our answers ready to be sent to the ANA.
This process added some excitement to our club’s members. Oftentimes we had been a bit lackadaisical in our efforts, failing to get much volunteer activity or enthusiasm on ideas calling for action. But now we had something with which to feel pride and satisfaction. Those feelings helped us this year as we made an exhibit for the January Florida United Numismatists Show.
We had never made an exhibit in the past, but several members volunteered to contribute to this effort on how living near Cape Canaveral has influenced us in our collecting hobby. We won first place in the Coin Club group.
We have a new spirit of cooperation among our members now as we enjoy our hobby, improve our meetings, and gain new members every month. It all goes back to working together for the unity of the club.

Last Update on BVI-Hurricane Irma
"Update as of 1:30 pm Sept 8: Little or no cell, power or wifi coverage in VG, but some calls are getting through. Satellite phone are being distributed to strategic places on VG. FLOW, LIME, CCT, and Digicel partially up on Tortola, but little or no coverage on the West End. AT&T is allowing free calls to the islands. Road Town is flooded with many roofs ripped off. Moorings and Paraquita Bay are badly damaged. Village Cay is pretty bad, too. Even Scotia Bank and Pusser's in RT are destroyed. The police station is destroyed and the fire station is badly damaged. The Navy is off of the coast of Tortola, and establishing base at Nanny Cay since the new marina appears intact. They have sent at least one helicopter from the ship to Peebles Hospital. Beef Island was cleared for landing early this morning, and reports are that one plane recently landed. The government is working on a plan to evacuate people, but it is highly unlikely that any commercial flights will resume in the next days. Branson is ok on Necker, but lots of damage to the island. Ivan's on JVD is destroyed, as are adjacent buildings, it appears. Trellis Bay is damaged but people are safe. Cindy and Paul Mason of Marina Cay are well, but not able to be evacuated. Sugar Mill beach bar is gone, and the hotel roof is off, but thankfully, staff are safe. Tamarind Club people are safe at Josiah's Bay. Half of Maria by the Sea is destroyed. Sea Cows Bay hit hard, with most of the homes in rubbles. VG has no power, wifi, or cell, but Oil Nut Bay has a bunker of people that are safe, but have heard nothing from them since 10 am this morning. Reports that there have been no loss of life on VG, but Island is a wreck. All telephone poles are down. Fisher's Cove lost the roof. Tree House and Dockside is destroyed. There is a FB check-in for those who can access it. Peter Island peeps are ok, but island is wrecked. Were trying to evacuate a few people off the island this morning. All at Scrub Island are safe. Ivan's at JVD is destroyed, as it appears all adjacent buildings. Cane Garden Bay is 80% destroyed- all of the bars and the fuel station. Roads are bad but an excavator is working now. Everyone evacuated to the police station during the Eye. Roof is off of Myett's and Quito's is gone. Carrot Bay is flooded and the roads are destroyed and not passable. Many graves have come out of the ground and some are open. There was a house fire. No reports of any deaths in Carrot Bay. Cappoons and Little Apple roads are impassable. Nanny Cay hotel and condos are intact and roof is on, but there is flooding. Hotel is not in condition to be used. Boats in Nanny Cay are upside down and all bunched up. Cannot get to boats at the moment as the docks and boats are a mess. The hill that overlooks the marina is stripped of everything, like a Hiroshima Bomb dropped. The hotel is trashed, and no plumbing, or electricity of any kind. Nanny has boats piled atop each other. Leverick Bay dock in VG is gone. Eustacia peeps ok but Island is a wreck. Frenchman's Bridge is now gone (though with a couple of conflicting reports.) Soper's Hole docks are badly damaged. Harbor Market is damaged and was looted. West End was badly hit, and very few reports from Long Bay- a few staff stayed and are ok. Reports are that most of the hotel is damaged. Homes in Belmont seem mostly ok, and homes with generators have lights on. Home near Smuggler's is reported ok, but no mention of the Cove condition. People at Frenchman's, Soper's Hole and Zoo Hill appear to all be safe. There is fresh water at Big Ben's. Cellphones and landlines are down in the West End and road are impassable. Heather Cuff and Gary and being looked after by the Morleys in Belmont. Sandy Spit is gone. Navy ship, RFA Mount's Bay is reported to be diverted to St. Maarten area prior to BVI. Most of Anegada was evacuated before the storm, and the 100 that stayed are ok but requesting assistance. Most of the homes were destroyed. Cooper staff on island are all safe, quite a lot of damage but buildings still standing. Cooten's Bay people are reported as safe. New update from JVD and WEST END SOPERS FRENCHMANS: All boats have sunk (nicole, branson, pajamas, music, kendall) people are looting Harbor Market and marine store. Pussers is GONE. Indigo house looks ok. Inspirado house GONE. Blades house roof gone. Sharns travel lift down. All boats on the hard have been damaged knocked over or on top of buildings. Ottertude catamaran is on top of Betito's building. Conflicting reports on whether the bridge to Frenchman's is intact or not. There are boats in the road in front of the West End Ferry building. There is nothing left on JVD. A badly injured lady named Gertrude medivac'ed out to PR. Peter Sean and Kendall are in a tender heading to JVD to rescue. They spent hours just trying to get to the tender moving telephone poles and cars and trees. Update for VG: For everyone in Virgin Gorda waiting on news: There is a team equipped with sat-phones, some relief supplies including solar chargers arriving on VG tomorrow with the NAVY, their MO is to give sat-phones to community leaders, light triage, and direct information on Jose and approaching weather on Saturday. More communication with the team around noon tomorrow. Reportedly, the prison in Road Town was destroyed and the prisoners escaped. There are four confirmed deaths in the BVI, but I do not have names. I believe they are all from Tortola, but that is not confirmed. Hospital is overflowing. Infrastructure Update- - Hospital- the hospital has remained open throughout. Staff have been working tirelessly (because they are heroes), but they are tired, hugely stretched and in desperate need of resupply. Does anyone know any way of helping them with this? - Ports/Docks- Nanny Cay new marina dock is being used by the Navy. The cruise ship docks have damage, but appears that at least one can be fixed fairly soon. - Airport- Extensive damage reported, but the airport has been cleared to receive relief flights. The bridge to Beef Island is intact. - External Support- The Navy is near Nanny Cay and clearing a road to get from the new marina to the main road. They sent a helicopter to Peebles earlier. State of emergency declared. Puerto Rico is sending water and supplies. US, England, and Dutch are sending vessels with supplies. Sopers Hole, Frenchman's Cay Update We have a group of 4 that hiked down from Belmont to Frenchman's today. I have waited to verify this information before posting as there is a chance of misinterpretation. Even so there is a possibility that the accuracy of this information is not 100%.. but it should be close. This report only covers the stretch from the bridge to the shipyard, not to the resort on the east and not up the hill or farther to the west past the shipyard. Here is the report. Everyone that we saw, including Bob Hodge, Eleanor Smith and Alfredo say that they know of no injuries or fatalities. That said the community is as messy as you would expect, perhaps more so as they spent a long time in the southern eye wall with westerly breeze. Sandspit and bridge are in place and passable. Sandspit has been "cleaned", but I cannot define that term. Road from the bridge to Sopers is full of debris, which is being cleared by a back how. Lighthouse marina office and bar is gone. Dock exists. Shepheard's dock and heads exists. Sink or Sail and Gelato exisits, upper office is blown through. Harbour Market exists, as does the new dock there, but the glass and door is blown through and the property looted. Harbour Market to Pusser's is impassable on the water side as the boardwalk is destroyed. Dive shop and Arawak destroyed, D'Best Cup is now water front. No specific intel on Pussers or latitude 18 so I am unsure whether that means that the boardwalk is damaged or that I just didn't get the information . Apartments to the rear of Pussers we assume to be OK as we have a small storeroom on the ground floor. Voyage office building is OK, but their dock (probably the oldest on Frenchmans) is destroyed. Moving down towards the the shipyard I have no intel on Shawn Smith's new build on the hill but there is a catamaran on the road down by Egbert's house. The finger docks down by the Frett's old Ample Hamper Too are OK, but there is a big voyage cat up against the roof of that building having flipped over from the yard. Yard is in shambles but I do not have any specifics. We were looking for a Cat Skid Steer that we own that was stored down there. We think that it is salvageable, but I believe that it is trapped or pinned by parts from the shipyard's newer travel lift that has collapsed. We also ran into Kimmo (who is fine) but did not see any of the Downings (Rob, Rain, Alice, Sharn etc). No cell phones that we own work in Soper's currently so Travis offered sat phone to anyone that wanted to make a call. If you have friends or loved ones in this community, this is possibly why you have not heard from them. Regarding infrastructure... It was stated that road to road town may be open as early as tomorrow but this has not been substantiated. We know nothing about the ferries but do know that the West End Ferry Dock customs and immigration side of the building looked pretty damaged. Fish n'lime was reported to be a dock, wall and bar top, notihng more. Again, the important part here is no reports of serious injury in this area of the BVI. New Peter Island update:-- this is from a post from Scott's Mom -- Scott managed to make a call last night (for about 1 minute before phones cut out) from Peter Island; He and his group of 33 have managed to cross over Peter Island to Stony Harbour - this is a long hike, and it must have been a difficult one with the two little ones, and the condition that the island is in. As hoped, here there was a generator and water. The many provisions they had painstakingly putter together before Irma, were sucked out of the building they had been in..He has a crew working on restoring a roof to a building so they can have shelter for the evening. I cannot imagine their struggle right now.....sounds a bit like "Lord of the Flies" or an episode in "Survival". Even though he sounded exhausted, listening to his voice and hearing how he was taking charge and caring for all these people made me weep with pride. Maria from Caribbean Buss is reported to take videos of the islands from a helicopter soon. ***Please note that Hurricane Jose is a category 3 storm and is expected on Saturday around 8 pm. Current path will pass north of BVI. — feeling concerned." Haven't heard from my parents but heard through others they are okay. Royal Navy is headed there now. And supplies are coming from Puerto Rico. Irma is now projected to hit my hometown in Florida and I can't board the houses there. Neighbors said they would check on the houses there and update me. The office is closed and in an evacuation zone. Trying to figure out how to forward calls from the office, waiting on FedEx to sign checks and documents but have no idea how to run the business from Denver or how or for how long or how to get my parents out of BVI or even get in the airports are gone.
