My interests
A niche interest I have is the in London Underground! Tunnels, stations, most things rail-infrastructure-related, I will be very excited as soon as I hear these topics! Although the system can get on my nerves when it fails (as for most Londoners probably), it is something amazing and underappreciated by most of the population.
For my Year 1 History & Theory of Engineering & Architecture essay, I chose to base my topic on the Jubilee Line Extension and in particular with Westminster station as the exemplary station. Hence why I got very exciting when I found out the site for this year’s DP2 project would be Westminster. From my year 1 research I have gotten quite familiar and fond of the area and I hope I will be able to utilize my already existing knowledge (for instance about the geology of the site) to accelerate my project.
Questions I would ask myself when transferring this interest to my engineering and architectural practice:
Does my building need to be on the ground? Could it be underground? Perhaps only a small part of it could be visible from the street? The main body could be hidden underneath? Does existing underground infrastructure influence the position/size/shape of my proposal? Can this existing infrastructure interact with my building?
 Fun fact: I play the pipe organ! Self-taught as well! I began my journey when I was 15 when I was asked to step in to play a mass at my local parish. Ever since, I have been fascinated with this majestic instrument. Year-on-year I have been improving! And I take whatever chance I can get to sit down at an organ console and play some glorious sounds.
In my architecture I could incorporate the importance of sound on the human sense. Could my building proposal produce sounds of its own? Or would it be able to ‘hear’ sounds from a specific place or its exterior? How would I control this sound for internal comfort?

Neutra VDL Studio and Residence Reopening 2021
Since February 2020, Noam Saragosti – director of the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences – and partner Juhee Park and have been quietly caring, planning, gardening, and teaching student docents remotely. They are thrilled to announce that The Neutra VDL Studio and Residences will safely reopen its doors after a year and a half of closure to the public.
After a long hiatus, the VDL will once again hold public events, cultural exchanges, and architectural tours. Despite this trying year, they have been busy working on new and exciting events and exhibitions.
Student-led Saturday tours will start on September 25th, 2021
The tours must be reserved through the online calendar on our website. Tour groups are limited to 5 guests maximum, and must be scheduled guest-by-guest.
30-minute tours are $15/person for adults, and $10 for seniors/students/faculty. Tours are free for children under 15, press, and Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty and staff.
All proceeds from the tours go towards the maintenance and restoration of the house. You can book your appointments here.
The house’s reopening will coincide with a new exhibition and related programming that we will announce shortly. We invite you to support our preservation and programming efforts at the VDL by making an online donation.

The Neutra VDL House invites you to the launch of the second book of LIGA, Space for Architecture, Mexico City. The volume “Architecture Exposed” has the exhibition of architecture as its central theme.
Founding directors Wonne Ickx and Ruth Estevez, will engage in a conversation with architecture critic, historian and curator Sylvia Lavin on curating architecture.
The book reviews the recent exhibitions and interludes organized at LIGA in Mexico City and includes essays by Agnaldo Farias (University of Sao Paolo), Barry Bergdoll (MoMA), Carlos Mínguez Carrasco (Storefront NYC), Daniel Fernández Pascual (Cooking Sections), Florencia Rodriguez (PLOT), Anna Puigjaner + Guillermo López (MAIO), Paola Santoscoy (Museo Experimental El Eco), Rory Hyde (Victoria & Albert Museum), Tina DiCarlo (Princeton University) and Wonne Ickx (LIGA). The book is published by Park Books, and will be internationally available from January 2018.
LIGA, Space for Architecture, is an independent initiative founded in Mexico City in 2011 by Carlos Bedoya, Ruth Estévez, Wonne Ickx, Victor Jaimes and Abel Perles that promotes Latin American contemporary architecture through exhibitions, conferences and workshops. LIGA was created as a curatorial platform in order to stimulate the experimentation in relation to the architectural discipline and its possibilities as a discursive practice, expanding and establishing connections with other disciplines.

Join the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design, Archivo Diseño y Arquitectura, and the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences for the opening of Tu casa es mi casa, an exhibition that connects two modernist houses in Los Angeles and Mexico City via the exchange of texts, objects, and installations by contemporary writers and architects/artists.
Three California-based writers–Aris Janigian, Katya Tylevich, and David Ulin-were asked to craft a letter to one of the three Mexico City-based design teams–Frida Escobedo, Pedro&Juana, and Tezontle–who responded with site-specific installations at the Neutra VDL House.
If our contemporary political moment offers up a border wall as the primary architectural expression of connection between the U.S. and Mexico, Tu casa es mi casa suggests a more porous boundary between the two countries. The title, a riff on the welcoming “my house is your house”, offers the inverted “your house is my house”–an expression of the personal and political stakes of this transposition.

Neutra VDL House The Neutra Studio and Residences (VDL Research House) is associated with Richard Neutra, a nationally and internationally seminal figure of the twentieth century Modern movement in architecture. During the 1940s, as Neutra’s work evolved, he also became the well-recognized founder of mid-century “California Modern” architecture. The VDL Research House is the only property where one can see the progression of his style over a period of years and is among the key properties to understanding the national significance of Richard Neutra. This year the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences was named a National Historic Landmark.

Installation & Exhibition at the Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Studio/residences
There are a number of art installations taking place in 2017:
• From the end of January 2017 until April artists Les Frères Chapuisat will have a wood art installation up in the courtyard of the Neutra VDL House.
• From mid September 2017 until mid March 2018 the Neutra VDL House will be hosting the exhibition Tu casa es mi casa funded by the Graham Foundation.
The Neutra VDL Studio and Residence was donated to the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation in 1990 (a non-profit organization classified as a tax-exempt organization pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code) and is under the stewardship of the College of Environmental Design (ENV) at Cal Poly Pomona. The primary mission of the College with respect to VDL is: to use the house as an educational resource for ENV students and faculty, to preserve and maintain the property, and to host cultural and artistic programs that strengthen the facility’s mission as a community resource.

Significance and Survival of Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Studio/residences
On November 20 2009 Richard Neutra’s youngest son Dr Raymond Richard Neutra will be talking at SciArc in Los Angeles about the Significance and Survival of the Richard and Dion Neutra VDL Studio/Residences compound in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. This live/work space was built in three phases.

The first designed by Richard Neutra in 1932 accommodated two households and Neutra’s office. It was named after Dutch industrialist van der Leeuw who loaned Neutra the money to build it (hence “VDL”) The second phase was designed by Richard Neutra in 1939 and accommodated another household. In 1963 a fire destroyed the upper floors of the first phase, and Richard Neutra with his son and partner Dion Neutra designed a replacement for that wing (VDLII) on the original prebricated prestressed concrete basement floor which was preserved to house an apprentices room and dark room.
The compound was built on a 60 x 70 foot lot and addressed a number of design questions that are still relevant today: How can we create a beautiful live/work space for multiple households on a small footprint? How can we design landscape so that it beings nature with its sights sounds and smells into this kind of urban dwelling? How can we use new sustainable industrial materials in a beautiful way? How can the social and biological sciences inform our design?

Since 2007 Cal Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design (owners of the compound), helped by the Friends of the VDL Research site has established an active web site ( www.neutra-vdl.org) explaining the significance of the compound, presenting plans and images and a video oral history of the place. A DVD on the compound has also been produced. A distinguished honorary committee with such distinguished architects as Tadao Ando, Richard Meier, Renzo Piano and IM Pei among others have indicated their regard for this historic compound. The college has started student-led drop-in tours for $10.00 every Saturday from 11am to 3:00 pm.

More that $60,000 has been raised and the distinguished architectural photographer, Julius Shulman before his recent death signed and numbered thirty five digital archival prints that he took of Neutra on the roof of the compound. Last week was very short as I managed to squeeze two days off into it. These have largely been spent outside in my garden office sorting and tidying LEGO. It’s very time consuming and satisfying, but does leave me slightly wondering where the time has gone. With a very warm and sunny Friday and Saturday I moved my watching of Agents of SHIELD outside along with dismantling and washing the LEGO Detective’s Office set. It’s a lovely little thing, but it had become very grubby. I’m now trying to rebuild it with a tray overflowing with parts. Inevitably, it’s becoming a quicker process the more of it I’ve built. Feels kinda exponential, as if by the end it will be assembling itself… Marilyn and I have also finally begun a shared build, the LEGO Brick Bank, which has been languishing on my “to be built” shelf for some years now… It’s pretty ace, and is a fine accompaniment to season two of Elementary.

  In dismantling the Detective’s Office, I re-remembered that I’d built a little half-modular some years ago, but they’ve been joined together for so long I’d somewhat forgotten that it wasn’t part of the set. I snapped a few pics from it before I dismantled it, for posterity, or whatever. The concept was a coffee shop on the ground floor and a bottle shop above. I’d do almost all of it differently now, of course, but I think it did look pretty good. I was very happy to use the Indiana Jones poster tiles to good effect!

We’ve started to enjoy strolling around Beeston late at night. I adore the peace and quiet (I’ve been watching bats in our garden!) and I’m in urgent need of more exercise. I’m looking at you, beer… We’ve met up with a couple of our pussy cats pals too, which has been especially lovely. Given the utter clusterfuck of Bojo’s latest update on the UK’s progress with coronavirus, I suspect I’ll be working from home, getting fat, and taking late night walks for some weeks yet.

Despite the week’s brevity, I seem to have taken part in two podcast recordings and read some books! Victory all round. 
Watching: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D season 3
Fuck me, I love this show more and more. We’re finally getting into the stuff I remember a little better. It’s getting so hard to summarise… I guess this season is properly focused on the fallout of the Inhuman explosion and on the truly epic and dark history of Hydra! First we have to recover Agent Simmons from the creepy monolith that whisked her away from Fitz’s arms at the end of season two. Turns out its part of an ancient Hydra tradition, who’ve been feeding the terrifying alien entity within on fresh young Hydra enthusiasts for centuries. Their ultimate aim is to unleash the monster on the world! The team do manage to rescue Simmons, but doing so reveals to Hydra that the doorway can indeed be bridged. There are some pretty tense moments, and Daisy/Skye gets to assemble her own team of Secret Warriors, comprised of some of the Inhumans now emerging. The first half of the season focuses on Hydra getting into the alien planet, with former agent Ward becoming the host of the Inhuman ancestor. That’s bad news for everyone… and gives us the second half, in which Ward sets about subsuming other Inhumans and advancing a plan to dominate the whole world. Bad guys with big plans! Mostly though, my heart continues to beat for FitzSimmons, and for Coulson and Agent Mae. Honestly, it’s hard to make any sense of this season if you haven’t seen the previous two, but if you have it really is a gift: long form deepening of relationships, expanding on the major MCU story threads from Civil War, and getting into the backstory of Hydra to a massive extent.

  Doing: The Improv Boost “Happiness” podcast
All round lovely fella, David Escobedo, one of our It’s A Trap: The Improvised Star Wars Show cast members, and rabid user of social media for promoting improv in all its forms, invited me to join him and a few friends for a very short podcast talking about things we feel passionate about. The challenge was to narrow it down to a specific thing to expostulate on for eight minutes. LEGO would be too broad, as would Star Wars, so it sent me down a little rabbit hole of figuring out what I do especially enjoy, rather than the general everything of science fiction and stuff. One of my gateways into SF, or at least one that has cast a lengthy shadow, is the work of the great John Wyndham. Picking The Day of the Triffids was an easy next step. That’s why I read both the abridged US edition then the UK/Penguin edition in a week. The latter is about 10% longer, and just has a little more depth. It’s startlingly apt for our current situation, and I’d recommend it for anyone who finds reassurance in someone else’s words managing to neatly sum up existential and ethical crises. Also, triffids are ace, and plainly the ancestor of all zombie fiction. 
Alas, whatever software David was using to stream Zoom into Facebook fucked us over and we lost the last five minutes. Which means you get all of Jac’s enthusing about calculus (whatever the hell that is… :-} ) but lose Vanessa’s final thoughts on our topics which neatly wedded our themes together. Essentially (I think) we’re both talking about aspects of community and how people deal with the situations they find themselves in. Enjoy!

Reading: The Chrysalids by John Wyndham
Having cheerfully chugged down a double dose of The Day of the Triffids I moved straight on to what’s generally regarded as his “best” novel. It’s not my most favourite, but it’s quite a read. Far future post-apocalypse, humanity is struggling to rebuild itself after what appears to be nuclear catastrophe with radioactive fallout causing widespread genetic mutation. As a result, a renewed fervour for purity and the importance of the human (and all other creatures and crops) matching the design laid down by God / government. The consequences of deviation from the norm are severe: death, destruction, banishment to the badlands. None of it’s very appealing.
Our viewpoint is David, a perfectly normal boy: somewhat lazy, chafing a little under the religious intensity of his father and the demands of being in a small farming community in the newly reclaimed lands of Labrador. Only… he’s telepathic, and that makes him a very serious deviation indeed. In the novel we find a lot more of the social awareness and interest in community and individualism that Wyndham show’s in all of his work, and it’s very thought-provoking while being beguiling easy reading. It’s quite a neat trick to cover abominations and socially-mandated murder with such a breezy and familiar writing style. Ultimately, of course, David and his friends have to go on the run from their peers and family. When his younger sister, Petra, who turns out to be an incredibly powerful telepath makes contact with someone in “Zealand”, the whole of David’s world (and ours, since he’s our only view of it) is turned upside down. Moments of bleakness and fear fight with equally delightful epiphanies and hope for true acceptance. It’s great! Read it!

Our fortnightly Facebook Live podcast recordings continue to catch me unawares! Mondays are not a good evening for me to have my brain in gear, but I’m trying. Last week we talked about self-care some more. It’s really important to look after yourself at the moment. Divorced of much meaningful in-person human contact, I think we’re all fraying away at the edges. We talked about some of the things that frustrate the act of self-care, and some of the tools we use to keep ourselves as sorted as we can be.

Frida Escobedo designs secluded courtyard for Serpentine Pavilion 2018
Mexican architect Frida Escobedo has been named as the designer of this year's Serpentine Pavilion, which is to feature a latticed enclosure surrounding a pool of water.
Escobedo is the 18th architect to design the Serpentine Pavilion, the prestigious annual commission from the Serpentine Galleries in London.
The architect, who was born in 1979 and set up her Mexico City-based practice in 2006, will be the youngest Serpentine Pavilion architect yet and the first solo woman to take on the project since the inaugural commission by the late Zaha Hadid, in 2000.
Her design is for a courtyard enclosed by dark latticed walls, made from cement tiles. It is intended as a play on the celosia – a typical feature in Mexican architecture that allows breeze to permeate a building.
The perforations will allow views into and out of the pavilion, while the mirrored underside of a curving canopy overhead will reflect the building and a pool beneath.

"My design for the Serpentine Pavilion 2018 is a meeting of material and historical inspirations inseparable from the city of London itself and an idea which has been central to our practice from the beginning: the expression of time in architecture through inventive use of everyday materials and simple forms," said Frida Escobedo.
"For the Serpentine Pavilion, we have added the materials of light and shadow, reflection and refraction, turning the building into a timepiece that charts the passage of the day."
The pavilion will comprise two rectilinear blocks set at an angle to reference the Prime Meridian – a line of longitude at London's Royal Observatory in Greenwich.
"With this bold interior, Frida draws history into the present and redefines the meaning of public space," said Serpentine Galleries director Hans Ulrich Obrist and chief executive Yana Peel.
The pavilion will be open to the public from 15 June to 7 October 2018 in London's Kensington Gardens. It will host a cafe, as well as a programme of art, architecture, music, film and dance events.

Escobedo's varied oeuvre includes the conversion of the former home and studio of painter David Alfaro Siqueiros into a public gallery in Mexican city of Cuernavaca. She has also created interiors for two Aesop stores in Florida and an Aztec-inspired installation in the V&A in London.
The announcement follows the news that the Serpentine Pavilion for 2017, by Diébédo Francis Kéré, will find a new permanent home at a Malaysian gallery, following an extended run in London.
The Serpentine Galleries also recently announced its first Serpentine Pavilion commission outside the UK, a structured designed Chinese studio Jiakun Architects that will open in Beijing in May 2018.

Counterspace combines abstracted fragments of London for carbon-negative Serpentine Pavilion
South African studio Counterspace led by architect Sumayya Vally has unveiled a pink and grey structure built from elements informed by buildings in London as this year's Serpentine Pavilion.
The coronavirus-delayed structure designed by Vally was designed to reference informal meeting spaces in areas of London that have large migrant populations.
"My practice, and this pavilion, is centred around amplifying and collaborating with multiple and diverse voices from many different histories; with an interest in themes of identity, community, belonging and gathering," said Vally.

Vally, who was recently named one of Time magazine's 100 leaders of the future, is the youngest architect to receive the prestigious commission.
Dezeen has published an exclusive video interview with Vally about the pavilion and has partnered with the Serpentine Gallery to live stream a conversation between her and Serpentine Galleries artistic director Hans Ulrich Obrist at 1:00pm London time on 9 June.
The pavilion was designed as a place of gathering
To create the pavilion, Vally spent four months in London investigating spaces of gathering that were significant to migrant communities.
These include the Fazl Mosque and East London Mosque, which were some of the first mosques built in the city, the Centerprise cooperative bookshops in Hackney, The Four Aces Club on Dalston Lane and The Mangrove Caribbean restaurant in Notting Hill.
Abstracted elements of each of these buildings and many structures that have been demolished were combined to form the pavilion's columns and inbuilt furniture.

The resulting pink and grey structure was built from a steel frame wrapped in plywood timber that was CNC-cut to give the building's intricate reliefs.
These boards were largely covered with pink and grey micro-cement sealed with water-based resin, with several black-stained cork panels positioned on the exterior of the pavilion.

Vally and the organisers aimed to create a pavilion that had a minimal carbon impact. Like all of the previous pavilions, it will be fully dismantled at the end of the summer, when it will be relocated and re-erected by its new owners, spa operator Therme Group.
Consultant AECOM produced a carbon report that takes into account the construction of the building along with its dismantling and transportation of the structure at the end of the summer that concluded the pavilion is a carbon-negative structure.
Inbuilt seating in the pavilion also has forms based on abstractions of London buildings
"When we started 18 months ago, our aim was to do everything to minimise the carbon impact," explained David Glover, technical advisor for the Serpentine Pavilion.
"If you had asked me at the time if we could build a zero-carbon temporary building that needs to be dismantled, removed and rebuilt I would have said it wouldn't be possible – so I always said it would have the 'lowest possible carbon'," he continued.
"But in the end, we built a carbon-negative structure."
The space will be used for events throughout the summer
The temporary building achieved this primarily by making use of steel that had already been used several times by contractor Stage One.
However, the temporary pavilion sits on an 85-square-metre concrete foundation slab that drew criticism when it was poured earlier this year.
According to Glover this slab, which has an average depth of 250 millimetres and was built from low-impact concrete, was necessary due to the height of the pavilion.
After the pavilion is dismantled the slab will be broken up and crushed and reused locally – something that was taken into account in the carbon report.
At the end of the summer, the pavilion will be dismantled
Along with the main pavilion in central London, four fragments of the building have been constructed across the city to extend the reach of the project.
They have been built at New Beacon Books in Finsbury Park, The Tabernacle in Notting Hill;  The Albany arts centre in Deptford and Valence Library in Barking and Dagenham.

"The past year has drawn these themes sharply into focus and has allowed me the space to reflect on the incredible generosity of the communities that have been integral to this pavilion," Vally said.
"This has given rise to several initiatives that extend the duration, scale and reach of the pavilion beyond its physical lifespan. In a time of isolation, these initiatives have deepened the pavilion’s intents toward sustained collaboration, and I am excited to continue this engagement with the Serpentine's civic and education teams and our partners over the summer and beyond."

Founded in 2005, Johannesburg-based collaborative architectural studio is directed by Vally. She is the latest architect to design the Serpentine Pavilion since Zaha Hadid created the first in the series in 2005.
Since then, pavilions have been built by numerous architects including Frida Escobedo, Bjarke Ingels and Sou Fujimoto. 2019's pavilion was designed by Junya Ishigami as a "hill made out of rocks". Next year's pavilion is set to be designed by American artist Theaster Gates.

Abstracted elements of each of these buildings and many structures that have been demolished were combined to form the pavilion's columns and inbuilt furniture.

The resulting pink and grey structure was built from a steel frame wrapped in plywood timber that was CNC-cut to give the building's intricate reliefs.
These boards were largely covered with pink and grey micro-cement sealed with water-based resin, with several black-stained cork panels positioned on the exterior of the pavilion.

Vally and the organisers aimed to create a pavilion that had a minimal carbon impact. Like all of the previous pavilions, it will be fully dismantled at the end of the summer, when it will be relocated and re-erected by its new owners, spa operator Therme Group.
Consultant AECOM produced a carbon report that takes into account the construction of the building along with its dismantling and transportation of the structure at the end of the summer that concluded the pavilion is a carbon-negative structure.
Inbuilt seating in the pavilion also has forms based on abstractions of London buildings
"When we started 18 months ago, our aim was to do everything to minimise the carbon impact," explained David Glover, technical advisor for the Serpentine Pavilion.
"If you had asked me at the time if we could build a zero-carbon temporary building that needs to be dismantled, removed and rebuilt I would have said it wouldn't be possible – so I always said it would have the 'lowest possible carbon'," he continued.
"But in the end, we built a carbon-negative structure."
The space will be used for events throughout the summer
The temporary building achieved this primarily by making use of steel that had already been used several times by contractor Stage One.
However, the temporary pavilion sits on an 85-square-metre concrete foundation slab that drew criticism when it was poured earlier this year.
According to Glover this slab, which has an average depth of 250 millimetres and was built from low-impact concrete, was necessary due to the height of the pavilion.
After the pavilion is dismantled the slab will be broken up and crushed and reused locally – something that was taken into account in the carbon report.
At the end of the summer, the pavilion will be dismantled
Along with the main pavilion in central London, four fragments of the building have been constructed across the city to extend the reach of the project.
They have been built at New Beacon Books in Finsbury Park, The Tabernacle in Notting Hill;  The Albany arts centre in Deptford and Valence Library in Barking and Dagenham.

"The past year has drawn these themes sharply into focus and has allowed me the space to reflect on the incredible generosity of the communities that have been integral to this pavilion," Vally said.
"This has given rise to several initiatives that extend the duration, scale and reach of the pavilion beyond its physical lifespan. In a time of isolation, these initiatives have deepened the pavilion’s intents toward sustained collaboration, and I am excited to continue this engagement with the Serpentine's civic and education teams and our partners over the summer and beyond."

Founded in 2005, Johannesburg-based collaborative architectural studio is directed by Vally. She is the latest architect to design the Serpentine Pavilion since Zaha Hadid created the first in the series in 2005.
Since then, pavilions have been built by numerous architects including Frida Escobedo, Bjarke Ingels and Sou Fujimoto. 2019's pavilion was designed by Junya Ishigami as a "hill made out of rocks". Next year's pavilion is set to be designed by American artist Theaster Gates.

Counterspace combines abstracted fragments of London for carbon-negative Serpentine Pavilion
South African studio Counterspace led by architect Sumayya Vally has unveiled a pink and grey structure built from elements informed by buildings in London as this year's Serpentine Pavilion.
The coronavirus-delayed structure designed by Vally was designed to reference informal meeting spaces in areas of London that have large migrant populations.
"My practice, and this pavilion, is centred around amplifying and collaborating with multiple and diverse voices from many different histories; with an interest in themes of identity, community, belonging and gathering," said Vally.

Counterspace's pavilion is the 20th temporary structure to be built in Kensington Gardens near the Serpentine Gallery as part of the annual programme.
Vally, who was recently named one of Time magazine's 100 leaders of the future, is the youngest architect to receive the prestigious commission.
Dezeen has published an exclusive video interview with Vally about the pavilion and has partnered with the Serpentine Gallery to live stream a conversation between her and Serpentine Galleries artistic director Hans Ulrich Obrist at 1:00pm London time on 9 June.
