The 1960s, particularly towards the end of the decade, were all about funky colours and patterns. Stripes, plaids and contrasting colours were common in infant clothing.
Plaids remained in fashion through to the 1970s, though the neon like colours of the 60s started to fall out of favour, being replaced by browns, oranges and greens. Knit and crochet handmade pieces also grew in popularity as a counterculture response to the mass manufacturing of synthetic clothing.
As a result of this mass manufacturing, the popularity of clothing embroidered with characters from children's media such as "Sesame Street" grew and continued to grow through to the 1980s. During the 1980s, perhaps due to the rise of athleisure, infant clothing also became much more casual with t-shirts and polos instead of button down shirts for instance.
The 1990s continued many trends from previous decades. Clothing was casual and colourful; onesies, vests, baby grows all were more commonplace. Denim also became increasingly popular, reflecting adult styles. This stayed very similar during the 2000s, along with newer trends like logomania, miniskirts, flares etc.
By the 2010s, "casual" had been replaced with "business casual" and even babies weren't spared. Collared shirts , trousers or knee length shorts was common for baby boys and for baby girls, dresses with leggings as well as leggings and a top were in fashion. Helmet therapy to reduce head flattening also became more common.
The 2020s began with a global pandemic leading to the rise in a preference for handmade and natural clothing as well as beige-mania. Infants are usually dressed comfortably in stretchy and simple two piece matching sets or onesies. Clothing itself is normally gender neutral, though "pink for girls;blue for boys" still remains common place and hair bows for baby girls remain popular.

First Burn
Fic O'Ween Day 4: Bonfire! This is part of a firefighter/ EMT AU that I said I would write about a year ago (oops), and it fit this prompt too well to pass up. Character credit goes to @lumosinlove!
TW implied sexual content, mentioned injury (not to any main characters), intense flirting
“This feels a little heavy on the irony,” Remus mused.
Next to him, Sirius took a long drink of his beer with a wry half-smile. “What, having a bonfire party for a bunch of people who run into burning buildings on the reg? Just a bit.”
“I don’t run into burning buildings,” Remus corrected. Something hotter than the embers warming his legs flared in his stomach when Sirius finished his drink and crushed the can easily beneath his thick-soled boot. God, I wish that were me.
“Best to leave that one to the professional whackjobs, eh?”
“Exactly.”
Sirius grinned at him, impish and altogether too attractive for someone Remus was absolutely not supposed to be into. Straight teeth, a crooked nose, one picture-perfect dimple just by his red lips—it was like Sirius had been manufactured just to drive him out of his mind. It didn’t help that Remus could see the flex of his broad shoulders even under a thick jacket to chase off the cold. He wanted to grip those shoulders. He wanted to lick them. He wanted to watch Sirius come apart.
Fuck, he really shouldn’t have let Leo talk him into a third beer.
Remus scrubbed a hand over the back of his neck and turned back to the fire, which hissed and popped in perfect ambience to the voices of his coworkers as they milled about. It was just Sirius and him by the fire, now; he caught a faint glimpse of Leo in the lanternlight, chatting up a lanky firefighter in a denim jacket. He was wearing what Remus had affectionately dubbed his ‘slut shirt’: a medium-sized tee with the EMT logo on it that looked more like an extra-small when stretched over Leo’s chest and arms. If he was looking to pull tonight, he definitely could.
And if Leo was doing it…
Remus snuck a glance at Sirius out of the corner of his eye. He was clearly relaxed, legs kicked out in front of him while he leaned back against the makeshift bench with hooded eyes. His cheeks and neck were pink from alcohol; his fucking massive hands toyed with one of the patches near the hem of his jacket. The firelight flickered off his cheekbones like it was made for it.
Don’t fuck your coworkers. An unspoken (and oft-broken) rule. Drama amongst hookups was the last thing they needed when saving lives. But it didn’t really count if it was Sirius, did it? After all, Remus wasn’t a firefighter. It would be a different story if he was thirsting for another EMT, and he took his job too seriously to risk that.
But here he was, thirsting hopelessly. He couldn’t even blame it on the beer. Sometimes life really did bite him in the ass.
One of half a dozen logs broke and sent up a cloud of sparks; they both jumped, Remus reaching instinctively to pull Sirius back from the edge of the bonfire. “Shit—”
“Easy, Lupin,” Sirius laughed. Remus felt something in his chest go ka-chunk and wondered briefly if he should consult Leo about that.
“I—your feet,” he managed lamely. “They were too close.”
Sirius held his gaze while he bent his long legs, still casual, still laid-back in a way Remus so rarely saw in their daily lives. “Better?” he asked, low and sweet.
Dry mouth. Caused by medications, radiation, frequent tobacco or alcohol use, or nerve damage. Remus swallowed. “Much.”
“You can let go if you want,” Sirius continued. That ridiculous grin curled at the corner of his mouth again. “I promise not to fall in.”
Remus looked between them and felt heat rise to his neck when he saw his hand twisted up in the sleeve of Sirius’ jacket. “Stop, drop, and roll if you do.”
“Thanks for the fire safety lesson, doctor.”
“Any time.” Was it just his imagination, or was Sirius sitting closer than he had been five minutes ago? Remus tilted his head toward the bonfire. “Figured you could use a refresher.”
“Not enough arsonists lately,” Sirius agreed. “And people are getting too good at remembering to turn their ovens off.”
Remus licked his lips and watched silver eyes track the movement. “There’s always room for ambulance drivers.”
“Can’t be too different than an engine.” It definitely wasn’t just Remus’ imagination anymore. One lean from either of them and their noses would be touching. In his periphery, he saw Leo wandering away from the picnic table with his redheaded catch in tow.
“Different enough.” Am I doing this? I’m doing this. Oh, god, I’m doing this. “Engines don’t usually have screaming people in them.”
There was the goddamn dimple again as Sirius held back a laugh. “Is that how you reel in all the boys, Lupin? Stories about screaming people in ambulances?”
“Only the ones I like.” It was a good thing Sirius was CPR-certified, because Remus could hear his heart pounding in his ears and it was not calming down.
“Sounds like you might have to show me how to drive, then.” Their shoulders brushed and Remus’ breath rushed out in the span of a second. Sirius ducked his head slightly. “If it’s that much different than an engine.”
He smelled good, like the smoke from the bonfire and whatever cologne always made Remus want to bash his face into the break room cupboards. You have reattached someone’s arm without throwing up. You can flirt with a hot boy. He hooked his finger in the leather band of Sirius’ bracelet and heard his breathing stutter. “Name your time.”
Dimple. Infuriating grin. Arch of one dark brow. “Tonight?”
Remus leaned close enough that his mouth brushed the lobe of Sirius’ ear. He felt him shiver. “You better not be on-call tomorrow morning, ‘cause you’re making me breakfast.”
“Deal,” Sirius breathed, and then he was gone, pulling Remus up with him in one quick motion before they were sprinting for his hatchback like the hounds of hell were at their heels. Remus was breathless with it, burning hotter than the fire they were leaving in the dust. Don’t fuck your coworkers*.

I very much want to hear about the insane thrift haul!
Tumblr media
omg OK so for context i love thrifting but i own wayyyy too many clothes so i have been good lately and have NOT been thrifting. however!!! the weekend before last i ruined my fav jeans (not thrifted) and rly needed to replace them because i wore them constantlyyyyy. so i went to my fav thrift store (which i frequent so often i know the staff by name L M A O) and my expectations were honestly low—
because these were like the PERFECT jeans. ankle length, baggy, high waist, ACTUAL denim w no stretch, in a nice light wash. they were expensive when i bought them—but they lasted me FOREVER and i wore the HELL out of them—and i knew i could get another pair but thought i'd tryyyy to find them thrifted just on the off chance.
i like to thrift jeans in the men's section as they are often better quality, actual denim, and vintage, plus they're usually priced more reasonably than women's clothes. and as soon as i stepped up to the rack i found basically. an EXACT REPLICA. of my favourite jeans. EXCEPT!!! THEY ARE ACTUAL VINTAGE!! in perfect condition. the thrift store doesn't have fitting rooms so i had to take a gamble on them but when i got them home and tried them on they were a PERFECT fit too. they're probably from the 80s/early 90s based on the brand and tag and i swear to god they fit like they were MADE for me. and i paid less than the price of a 6-inch subway sandwich for em.
i was riding a real high after finding these, so then i braved the women's section where i found:
a GORGEOUS midi dress. it's not vintage but it's from a nice brand WITH THE ORIGINAL TAGS STILL ON IT?? it has with short sleeves, a tie-belted waist, a pleated skirt, and it's a light cornflower blue with a pretty floral pattern!!
THEN!! i found an absolutely unreallllllll vintage, faux-suede-ish 2-piece co-ord set in a rly rly nice camel-y toffee colour. it has a pair of high waist, wide leg trousers + a button-down overshirt kind of top (it also had shoulder pads and beading all along the collar and pockets of the shirt, but i have since removed those lmaooooo.) it is a little bit yee haw but i'm SOOOOOOOO into it and it fits me PERFECTLY.
then i was getting rly bold so i was like ok lets check the ladies pants section just to see what's up. i found a nice (non-vintage) ecru coloured pair of jeans: high waist, wide leg, good quality denim. they didn't look worn at all. i didn't quite recognize the brand enough to say whether or not they were actually ""good"" but i was like fuck it we ball and got them too. i get them home, look up the brand. these jeans... are basically brand new..... still available on the manufacturer's website........ for $118 United States of American dollars.
i also got a little wicker basket for my board games if that is of interest to u... but that one is not as exciting hehe.
END OF THRIFT HAUL if u made it this far i LOVE U

Called Infinna, the fibre is already being used by global brands including Patagonia, H&M and Inditex, which owns Zara. "It's a premium quality textile fibre, which looks and feels natural - like cotton," says Mr Alava, rubbing his own navy blue tee between his fingers. "And it is solving a major waste problem."
Around the world, an estimated 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is created each year, according to non-profit Global Fashion Agenda, and this figure is set to rise to more than 134 million tonnes by 2030, if clothing production continues along its current track.
To the untrained eye, samples of Infinited Fiber's recycled fibre resemble lambswool; soft, fluffy and cream coloured. Mr Alava explains that the product is produced through a complex, multi-step process which starts with shredding old textiles and removing synthetic materials and dyes, and ends with a new fibre, regenerated from extracted cellulose.
This finished fibre can then simply "hop into the traditional production processes" used by High Street brands, replacing cotton and synthetic fibres, to produce everything from shirts and dresses to denim jeans.
Much of the science involved in making the fibre has been around since the 1980s, says Mr Alava, but rapid technological advancements in the last few years have finally made large-scale production a more realistic possibility.
In parallel, he believes High Street brands have become more focused on "really honestly looking for changing their material usage", while millennial and Gen Z consumers are increasingly concerned about shopping sustainably. "They are different animals, different consumers, to people my age," he laughs.
The company has already attracted so much interest in its technology that it recently announced it was investing €400m (£345m; $400m) to build its first commercial-scale factory at a disused paper mill in Lapland.
The goal is to produce 30,000 tonnes of fibre a year once it's operating at full capacity in 2025. That is equivalent to the fibre needed for approximately 100 million T-shirts.
"I think the impact could be quite big, if you think about the whole textile system, what exists currently and how much textile waste that we have," argues Kirsi Niinimäki, an associate professor in fashion research at Aalto University, a few blocks away from Infinited Fiber's headquarters.
"It's a really good example of actually how we can 'close the loop'… really begin to move to a circular economy."
Infinited Fiber's growth is tied into a wider vision in Finland, which wants to become Europe's leading circular economy, with a focus on reusing and saving resources. In 2016, it became the first government in the world to create a national road map designed to help reach its goal.
Several other Finnish start-ups are looking at ways to produce new textile fibres on a big scale, while also cutting down on harmful emissions and chemicals. These include Spinnova which, from its textiles factory in Jyväskylä, central Finland, transforms cellulose from raw wood pulp into ready-to-spin fibres.
Spinnova's yarn is attracting plenty of global attention and has so far been used by brands including upmarket Finnish clothing label Marimekko, and outdoor wear firms North Face, Bergans and Adidas, which recently used it in a limited edition midlayer hoodie designed for hikers.
Elsewhere in Europe, there are a range of other companies developing technologies to create more circular yarns, including Swedish startup Renewcell, and Bright.fiber Textiles, which plans to open its first factory in the Netherlands in 2023.
But experts say there are a range of challenges facing these new fibre brands as they plot their expansions.
Ms Niinimäki underlines that the clothing manufacturing sector has, until recently, been slower than many other industries when it comes to embracing sustainability, which could set the tone for a slower transformation than companies like Spinnova and Infinited Fiber hope.
"It has been so easy to produce the way that we have been producing, and just to move towards more effective industrial manufacturing on an increasingly bigger scale," she says.
"There hasn't been a big pressure to change the already existing system." However, she is hopeful that, in the European Union at least, new rules aimed at ensuring clothing manufacturers focus on more sustainable and durable products will speed up "a change in mindsets".
Another issue is whether clothing brands will be able to pass on the additional costs of their new high-tech production techniques on to consumers, especially at a time when the cost of living is spiralling globally.
Adidas' latest limited edition hoodie produced with Spinnova fabric costs €160 (£137; $160) to buy online in Finland, at least €40 more than most of its other technical hoodies.
"Fashion is a complicated area, because even if people are saying that they are environmentally aware, they don't always act rationally," says Ms Niinimäki. "There's also this kind of emotional side when you talk about fashion consumption, and of course, the price is also linked to that."
While both Infinited Fiber and Spinnova insist their business plans look holistically at all aspects of production - for example using renewable technologies to power their factories - climate campaigners argue it is still too early to accurately estimate the net effect of these new techniques on carbon emissions.
"Pulp and other alternative fibres can provide diversity for sourcing textile materials and therefore lessen the burden caused by production of more traditional textile raw materials such as cotton," says Mai Suominen, a leading forest expert for WWF. "However it depends on the use of energy, all the processes they use and how they use waste materials."
Most importantly, she argues, simply slotting more sustainable fibres into the multibillion dollar fashion industry won't be enough to combat climate change, if we keep making and buying clothes at the current rate.
There is no sustainable development unless the overall natural resource consumption is radically decreased to a level that fits within planetary boundaries," she argues.
But within the Finnish fibres industry there is a sense of boomtown optimism that the increased use of recycled or reimagined fibres could be an important part of the jigsaw in the battle to limit climate change.
"The fast-fashion companies who have been kind of creating certain parts of the problem are highly interested in new technologies," says Infinited Fibers chief executive Petri Alva. He believes that if investment continues, the recycled fibres could become mainstream within ten to 15 years.
