Also, the reason Loretta was so GD nervous and distracted at the first table read in ep 1... She was literally staring across the room at Dickie, watching her son in person for the first time, while she should have been reading her line
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She looks across the room at Dickie reading, then both Ben and Dickie look up at her in confusion, and she just smiles back cuz Dickie is looking at her

you know, going over to rewatch the third season of only murders in the building, the context of scenes with loretta make more sense right down to episode one because you immediately get why she is so nervous, it isn't because of the play, it's because of dickie.

Did Dickie even really know Ben?
Everything we learn about Ben from Dickie turned out to not be true?
Dickie: Ben stayed out every Thurs night to do drugs at a brothel
Reality: Ben had a sewing circle with 5 old ladies
Dickie: He had to cover up Ben's bloodwork cause he did hard drugs
Reality: Ben's Sewing Ladies said he sewed to stay off the hard drugs
I need to go back to the earlier eps, but I'm pretty sure hardly anything we're told about Ben is true in flashbacks?

OMITB 3x10 (THE FINALE) liveblog:
Okay, before we begin I just want to say my fear is that they won’t do anything with Tobert and there won’t be any pay off with him being framed as suspicious.
This actually seems like a pretty good explanation of what a producer does.
They actually managed to make the scene with Donna and baby Cliff feel sweet despite all the… you know.
“I have a hard enough time calling him Tobert.” lmao (and her smile after Loretta fist bumps her seems off to me, like the camera lingers too long.)
Good on Loretta for figuring out Donna’s sick.
I’m so sad that we’re gonna get so little of Mabel and Loretta together.
Idk if the hankies had names on them or anything, but I’m thinking they know the hankie wasn’t Donna’s?
I like Donna more and more as time goes on. ‘Yeah, I poisoned Ben, what of it?’ (and Mabel’s line: ‘why’d I write all these queue cards’ iconic.)
Would you rather fight one Ben Glenroy sized rat or 80 rat sized Ben Glenroys?
The cue cards on Charles’ back ojvfgiopk
It was Cliff’s hankie. He wiped his mom’s lipstick off after she kissed him on the lips again.
Tobert quit saying cute.
Oh Jesus Tobert.
I mean, that’s not going to happen.
Dickie 🥹
That was such a sweat moment between Loretta and Dickie.
Mabel, have you considered not confronting the killer alone in a high up place?
This is so close to how Zoe died cinematic parallels make brain go burr
This is so stressful
Okay, I found that to be more predictable then the other two seasons, but it was so well executed that I’m not sure if I care.
Also, WHAT’s the deal with Tobert?!
And who’s about to die? (and is it Tobert?)
Sazz Pataki?! Please don’t die.
Nooooo Sazzzz
I guess she was right about someone being out to get Charles.
That’s actually kinda fucking poetic, with her wanting to protect Charles.
And yes I’m disappointed they didn’t give us any pay off with Tobert. If you make a character suspicious, it’s typically best to have them be hiding something

Aight, taking the latest episode into account I'm moving my top theory from Orient Express to what I'll call the Clouds of Witness theory: many people might have wanted to murder Ben, but no one did.
The big new clue this week was "FUCKING PIG" scrawled on Ben's dressing room mirror in lipstick. The trio think it was Joy because it was her lipstick, but they're wrong. Here's my reconstruction of Ben's steps that night:
Ben argues with Tobert, then storms off to his dressing room, where the camera captures him monologuing at a chocolate chip cookie.
He breaks his highly restrictive diet, eats the cookie, and soon sees a little red pimple appear on his face. Kimber sees him while the blemish is visible, and will see him later at some point when it's covered.
He calls Joy -- a veteran TV makeup artist (as the dialogue reminded us this week), and someone he may well have worked with on his own cop show -- who pops in and fixes him up perfectly, but leaves a stray item behind in her rush.
Ben, now at a self-loathing low, looks in his dressing room mirror and scrawls the cartoon pig face and the words "FUCKING PIG" across his own reflection with Joy's red lipstick.
Curtain time; a visibly stressed Ben takes the stage and collapses for reasons still unclear. But whatever goes down, whether mischance or foul play, it doesn't kill him.
Ben regains consciousness, goes from the hospital to the party, makes his rounds, gets a phone call and steps out. Then -- for reasons also still unknown, and clutching the handkerchief belonging to either a crew member or Dickie -- he either falls or jumps down the elevator shaft onto the broken elevator parked on the ground floor. His body cracks the roof of the elevator, but does not fully break through it until the podcast trio board the elevator some time later.
The biggest problem with this theory, to me, is the question of how it could ever end up being substantiated, since the Arconia evidently still doesn't have any security cameras for some reason.
From Dickie's breakdown in the penthouse, though, I wonder if he may have seen more than he's admitted to seeing. Even if all he realized is that Ben was being deeply hurt on his last day alive by that restrictive showbiz diet, there's a guilt that Dickie's holding inside that might help piece together the real story.

Buckle up people, I’m about to tell you who’s this season’s killer
It’s Donna.
Why, you might ask? Nothing up to this point actually let to her, right? Wrong!
Have you ever seen that musical, The Producers?
The Producers’ plot is really simple. There’s this guy Max Bialystock, who - with help from this other guy, Leopold Bloom - scheme a plan of how to make 2 million dollars in profit from a total and utter disaster of a play. They think of this amazing five stages of a plan, which only the first two will be useful for us.
Step One: Find the worst play ever written.
Step Two: Find the worst director in town.
So, what does it mean for us?
Death Rattle (the play) is this ridiculous murder mystery where the main suspect is a baby. It’s, it’s just ridiculous, right? Step one speaks for itself.
Okay, but what about step two?
We know that there were at least two directors signed for this play: Jerry Blau and Oliver Putnam. Now, I’m not a critic, but I do have a feeling like both of them can be seen as a disasters just waiting to happen. We’re talking about people who are either a) living in the theater cause they’re broke and too proud to go back home, b) director of Splash! The Musical (2005). Like I said, not a critic, but doesn’t seem like a money making machine for me.
Okay, but what about it? It might as well be a coincidence that it fits, right? Wrong.
There are two real life people cameos in this season - opposed to last two ones, where we got just one per each. This time, we got this silly little guy, (who’s extremely talented and funny) Matthew Broderick, and this other silly guy (who’s more famous and more accomplished than any other star cameo in the series) Mel Brooks. What do they have to do with it, you might ask?
Well, it’s time to skip to the year of our lord 2001, and the Broadway premiere of The Producers, whom were written by silly guy number two, Mel Brooks. It had an amazing cast, everyone was so talented, and later nominated for Tony’s. One of which, was this silly guy number one, Matthew Broderick, for the role of Leo Bloom. Unfortunately, he lost in his category to his co-star, our own Teddy Dimas, Nathan Lane, who’s suspiciously absent from this season (sure, he was having some other, Broadway related play gig, but hey).
And you might say, okay, they got Broderick, and what? Well, let me tell you: not every show got a chance of Mel Brooks’ cameo. I mean, come on, Broderick has an incredible filmography and stage career, why The Producers out of all of them? Why Mel Brooks?
Okay, so you might ask now, if you’re still not convinced: what was her motive? What, was it money? That doesn’t make sense! And you’d be right. I think, that her motive was something far more important to her: Cliff, her son.
Up until last Tuesday I was convinced she wanted Death Rattle to fail. I mean, that was meant to be Cliff’s debut, and if it would turned out to be a hit, he would most probably leave her - or so she thought he would, so she poisoned the cookies, and left them for show’s biggest name, knowing Ben wouldn’t resist to try them.
But now I know, or at least suspect, that that’s not the case, thanks to one scene from this week’s episode.
While in the bathroom, Donna did said to Loretta, that a mother would do everything to protect her child; now, we were meant to be focused on Loretta and her struggle, but what if there’s more to that scene? What if she wanted her son to succeed, and the show to be a hit, but sensed that Ben Glenroy was a threat to not even her, but her baby, and his Broadway debut?
This week’s episode was about mother who was able to confess to a crime she didn’t commit, just so she could protect her baby. I think that this seasons murderer is a mother, who committed said crime, just so she could protect her baby.

OMITB... My guess...
Donna did the poisoning, but she did not end up killing Ben. The killer is Cliff.
I think Ben knew he was poisoned. Since he was fasting in advance of the play, the only thing he ate was the cookie, so he knows that's the source. While it was Cliff who offered him the cookies at the door, he mentioned that his mother ordered them. Then, there is one cookie waiting for him in his dressing room.
Ben confronts Donna, maybe he even has proof that it was Donna, and Cliff comes to her defense. He pushes Ben down the elevator shaft to protect his mother from going to jail for poisoning Ben.
Or... perhaps he was just stressed out and did his "anxiety dance" and accidentally knocked Ben into the elevator shaft.
Somehow, it's a mother/son tag team.
My second guess... it was Dickie.
Relieved that O/M/C has found Dickie "innocent," Loretta recants her confession. It's proven she couldn't have poisoned Ben, and she is released. She's eager to have a mother/son reunion, only to arrive at the Arconia to see Dickie being led away in handcuffs after all. That is angst worthy of our Queen Meryl
He was driven mad because he thought he was finally rid of Ben, and then he had the audacity to "come back." That's why he told Loretta "You understand."
So those are my guesses...
@icecoffee90, what do you think?

At this point, I am so highly suspicious of Donna and Cliff. Donna's little speech to Loretta in the bathroom is the biggest reason I have for this feeling. This was Cliff's first time producing a show. I think that Donna knew that the show was gonna flop, so to spare her son the embarrassment and the blow to his career, she had to stop they show from debuting, and she did so by killing Ben.
If it wasn't her, it was Cliff himself. I am however not sure what his motive could be. Maybe he was tired of being bossed around. Maybe they had a secret affair that ended ugly. I really don't know but he feels so suspicious to me.
At this point, no one else makes sense as the culprit. Tobert is suspicious. Too suspicious. The show wants us to be suspicious of him. Which makes me believe he isn't the murderer.
It is absolutely not Loretta. That is pretty obvious. We were ment to be suspicious of her this entire time, but her confessing in order to protect Dickie exonerates her in my book.
And it is not Dickie. I just don't think he has it in him.
The rest of the cast is clear in my book too. None of them have a motive. We also haven't explored any of them at all at this point which seems unusual.
Idk, my money is on the DeMeo's. And that is the end of my rambling.

Only Murders in the Building
So we’re almost halfway through this season’s mystery and there have been some interesting suspects that were cleared but more threads to unravel. So far (to me) the 3 main suspects were Loretta, Kimber and Joy. As of episode 4 we know Kimber isn’t the killer and as they said in episode one having the killer be a woman again has been done to death lol. I don’t think it’s Loretta because having the killer be a love interest is so season 1 and even though there seems to be a dark side to her character I don’t think she would’ve killed Ben and risked the first proper job of her career. Same with Joy, Charles dating another killer would be a bit far fetched even though they set her up as a red herring with the threatening message written with her lipstick and her being one of the last people to see Ben before he collapsed on stage. Tobert as a possible love interest for Mabel is also unlikely to be the killer since he wanted to do a documentary about Ben’s murder and catch the killer himself.
I personally think the killer will be Ben’s brother Dickie. It would be a first to have a male killer this time and he was always the closest to Ben as brother and manager so he would have the opportunity to kill him at anytime. As for motive he was probably sick of babysitting his brother through all his jobs and that little dig about nepotism making him feel insecure was probably eating away at him and whatever the phone call was about that Ben got when he arrived at Oliver’s apartment and took upstairs probably sparked an argument that ended with Ben getting pushed down the elevator shaft. And Dickie moved on very quickly from Ben career wise when he got Loretta that job on a Grey’s Anatomy spin off that was filming in LA and he was going with her as her manger (fleeing the scene of the crime). Also the theory about the killer not having their Death Rattle hankie doesn’t just implicate the cast, he could’ve given one to Dickie on opening night too.
There hasn’t been a mention so far in season 3 of the argument Charles had with Ben right before he went on stage so is that retconned? Who was the “she” Charles was warning Ben to stay away from and what did Charles know that Ben did? And what happened to Charles’s stepdaughter Lucy? She was in the audience of the play at the end of season 2 but other than Charles asking Joy if she got Lucy home in episode one there’s been no mention of her, which I find weird since her presence in Charles’s life has been a big part of his character from the start of the show.

3x08 liveblog (probably objectively the best episode this season):
Visiting director? I wish I could tell if that was supposed to be someone we know… (Teddy Dimas)
Her baby boy : (
That guy (Oliver, I think) teetering on the edge of the building in the intro.
“I’ve been crashing with Theo for now.” Vibrating. I hope we get to see even 10 seconds (!!!) of that before this season’s over.
“I have a lot to figure out.” I’m so wondering if she suspects Tobert at all. I’m not sure if her trust in him feels out of character because she doesn’t actually trust him, or because we’re meant to think she’s not doing well.
The best parts of this season for me, someone who doesn’t care about theater, have been the time spent with the trio together and with minor characters we already know from previous seasons. So many shows keep trying to expand their universe when what they should really be doing is going deeper into themselves. I hope next season’s victim is an Arconia resident who makes that happen.
We could just assume Gregg was allowed to post bail, but actually I think kidnapping and attempted murder are just misdemeanors in this universe.
Great entrance from Detective Williams.
Who’s ‘they?’
I feel like Cliff and Donna, at least by themselves, are just too easy, but their reaction to the critic is pretty incriminating.
I like how the trio and Detective Williams are friends now.
Howard and his fanfic.
Usually I don’t really care about Howerd but I’m liking him this episode.
I’m fairly certain that isn’t a weighted blanket.
What will Loretta do to protect her child?
DW, probably: ‘wow, old friends really SHOULD be forgotten and never brought to mind.’
“You know killers sometimes insert themselves into investigations.” She totally suspects Tobert at least a little bit.
“Isn’t he like 50?” “Yeah, he’s a child.” That line makes me feel so many things.
Wouldn’t it be funny if it WAS Bobo and K.T.
🎶which of the Pickwick triplets did it🎵
The more episodes that pass, the more I think Ben and Co staged the poisoning/first death.
This IMovie editing is a little overwhelming to look at.
“What if none of it is true?” !!!!
Loretta’s gonna confess to protect Dickie, isn’t she?
I wish all the episodes of this season were this good.
“With Tobert’s GoPro, we recorded everything.” Yeah, what else did Tobert('s GoPro) record?
Redemption!
Donna starring into the camera is just as uncomfortable as it’s probably meant to be.
(I’m guessing Ben didn’t even drink his protein shake? ‘Fucking pig’)
That whole thing was so dramatic in the best way possible.
Not sure where I'm at with the Ben faking his own death theory after that. Need time to process.

okay, but what if loretta's not some crazy fan, but actually their mother, or a nanny from the past? we for sure know that ben's death rattle script included the lines that were useful to his story (the heartbeat monologue), so why wouldn't look for the light fit loretta?? also, that would kinda explain why did dickie switched to representing loretta so fast after his brother's death
