""Western"" style dragons were definitely the origin of my love of dergs. I love when dragons wings have a good amount of attachment to their torso so you can have that suspension of disbelief of like "yes this beast can FLY." This image from a dragon website I found in fifth grade and was obsessed with is burned into my mind with regards to dragons and wings:

A sociologist (whose name I cannot recall bc I wrote the paper I cited him in closing in on two decades ago sjdjdj) once posited while speaking with the History Channel that the differing attitudes and depictions of dragons across the globe could be due in part to differing views of nature. I think that his supposition is a bit off nowadays, but in sixth grade while doing a social studies project about the differences between eastern and western depictions of dragons it blew my mind right open LOLLLL. I've always found it arresting how many overtly or stylistically draconic figures can be found around the world. There's just something that speaks to us about Big Lizard and/or Snake that is sorta magical or otherwise powerful and can Fuck You Up. I think it's part of the dragon's enduring appeal- this creature that we all 'know what it is' yet has so many different variations and ways to explore it, that can say so many things about the world it inhabits, that can be beast or scholar or god or murderer...

Speaking personally, tho, I'm always a fan of a good red dragon. Something about the live action dragon media and the animated Hobbit movie that filled my youth made me love a red dragon and want to see their interiority, especially those that are shown as just "the bad ones." Like it's just fact too that the D&D 3rd edition red dragon is the coolest and most iconic looking of ALL dragons in that dungeon. It's facts.

This is highly disorganized but I think that fits "reverse unpopular opinion" and also you apparently tapped into my inner ten year old who HAS TO TELL YOU ALL THE DRAGON FACTS AT THE SAME TIME OMFFFFGGGGGG

UHHH parting note is I was a childhood Hater of Animated Movie Smaug and mentally photoshopping him into the coolest red dragon I could imagine is probably part of what fueled my mental obsession, but now as an adult I honestly kind of love his design. It's very obviously draconic while sort of eschewing a lot of the finishing notes that make you think dragon. Big lizardy body, but then the face is almost cat like with these HUUUGE nostrils. Fuzzy ruff down his back. Fat. Able to rip your face off and kill you with his weird split tail. And there's no denying that the voice is amazing, like the actor just SELLS IT.

Uh yeah. Dragons! I like the it.

hey um! with KOSA looking more and more closer to passing, email and call your reps to prevent it from passing! especially with ~3 days (as of the 2/23/2024 update on this post) left until KOSA is decided bad internet bills is a helpful site with an easy to fill out forum that does not take long to complete stop KOSA is also another good site w/ a prefilled out message you can send (with resources for those not in the U.S. too!), and much like bad internet bills, it has an easy to fill out form that does NOT take long to complete EFF has a comprehensive analysis on the bill--and allows you to take action, helps you look up and contact your representative. your phone number is required, and this seems to be the longest of the three to fill out, but it is AS important as the rest this is very important! because this will effect ALL of us, not just usamericans! this is something that has the power to irreversibly ruin the internet as a whole
