We had the great pleasure of working with the phenomenal, illustrator/visual artist Jerry Pinkney. We worked on developing a musical performance entitled, The Sound Of Progress: Songs For John Henry which was inspired by Pinkney's powerful illustrations for the book, John Henry. We also were fortunate to work with Jerry Pinkney again on our book, Philadelphia Jazz Stories Illustrated: Volume One. He graced us with a beautiful, time-spanning, mixed-media painting of legendary saxophonist, Benny Golson. Jerry Pinkney was an internationally known artist who was also a humble man, who loved and was proud of his Philly roots. His work represents a treasure of beautiful, thought-provoking and informative explorations of the global Black experience. We have lost a kind, compassionate, mentor and friend. We loved him madly. Ironically, instead of sharing a story about his rise to fame, or his brain aneurysm and memory loss, or his heroic return as a world class guitarist, Martino graced us with a wonderful and true, tale of facilitating a guitar lesson with the gigantic, Philadelphia basketball icon, Wilt Chamberlain.
