I am sad to hear the passing of one of my favorite inspirations when it comes to illustration in children's literature. I had the opportunity to meet Jerry Pinkney at a library conference so many years ago. He was so pleasant and he signed a copy of ‘The Lion & The Mouse’. I found this copy a couple of weeks ago in my studio and was still in awe over this book. He will be deeply missed. 😞 #jerrypinkney #jerrypinkneyart #childrensbookillustration #childrenillustrator https://www.instagram.com/p/CVRKqdPF4HuIckaUW9oX6GUPYGc5l0JRZfJVKQ0/?utm_medium=tumblr

I love children’s books. I adore “Sam and the Tigers”, written by Julius Lester and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney. Jerry Pinkney is an amazing artist and hardly needs my shout out, but in my ongoing posts of honoring black artists, I would like to do just that. The story itself is a retelling of the little Black Sambo, an outdated and (so I am told) racist story (I have never read the original). This version is absolutely delightful. In a place called Sam-Sam-sa-Mara, animals and people live and work together. There lived a boy named Sam. Actually, everyone is named Sam in Sam-sam-as-mara. Sam likes colorful clothes and tigers want them. I recommend this book wholeheartedly! #bestpicturebooks #samandthetigers #honoringblackartists #jerrypinkney #juliuslester https://www.instagram.com/p/CBTDHnkh53e/?igshid=1kywva6jp7ntr

The Little Mermaid by Jerry Pinkney - this book, from the Caldecott author-illustrator, shows the Little Mermaid as a joyful, inquisitive Black girl. Instead of a prince, this Little Mermaid meets a friend, a girl her own age who becomes her fellow adventurer and best friend. Despite giving up her voice to the Sea Witch, she still finds a way to communicate through drawing - and at the end of the tale, she reclaims her voice and shouts, defeating the Sea Witch and saving her family. The illustrations are vibrant and alive throughout - as always, Jerry Pinkney's breathtaking illustrations leave you gazing at each page, taking in every shimmering detail. This is a Little Mermaid stronger and more wonderful than you’ve ever seen. #picturebooks #illustration #thelittlemermaid #fairytales #fairytaleretellings #blackgirlmagic #childrensfantasy #childrensliterature #childrensbooks #childrensbookstagram #jerrypinkney #diversekidlit #kidlit #diversechildrensliterature #diversekidsbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CLA1FaPh5re/?igshid=1h92xz6aezzna

#BooksILove : #MirandyandBrotherWind by #PatriciaCMcKissack illustrated by #JerryPinkney was an all time FAVORITE of mine! The story centers around Mirandy who's is getting ready for her very first cake walk! Authors note: "One of our family treasures is a rare picture of my grandparents dated 1906, five years before they were married. They were teenagers at the time and had just won a cakewalk. As winners, they'd been awarded an elaborately decorated cake. Frist introduced in America by slaves, the cakewalk is a dance rooted in Afro-American culture. It was performed by couples who strutted and pranced around a large square, keeping time with the fiddle and banjo music. As the dancers paraded by, doing flamboyant kicks and complicated swirls and turns, the elders judged them on appearance, grace, precision, and originality of movies. The winning couple took home a cake. It's never been difficult for me to imagine my grandparents strutting around a square with their backs arched, their toes pointed, and their heads held high....They were full of life's joy, especially Mama. Papa used to say he believed Mama captured the Wind. I believed it too." https://www.instagram.com/p/CA_apt4g2ml/?igshid=1uma6ytxhgp6i

Today is the second of the seven day celebration of Kwanzaa. This fantastic book is by Andrea Davis Pinkney, prolific children’s book author and wife of illustrator Jerry Pinkney, who was a speaker in the 2014 Kislak Center symposium *Creating Children’s Books: Collaboration and Change*. This particular book, “Seven Candles for Kwanzaa” is illustrated by their son Brian. The drawings were created using scratchboard overlaid with oil pastels. Here a family is depicted taking part in the Karamu feast. During this feast the Kikombe cha Umoja, or Unity Cup, is passed around the each participant, who takes a sip to promote family unity and honor their ancestors. This book is a part of the Atha Tehon Collection. 24 Children’s Books To Read To Your Kids In Honor Of Black History Month
24 Children’s Books to Read to Your Kids in Honor of Black History Month. And year-round, of course.
By #TaylorPittman
February marks #BlackHistoryMonth , and story-time is just one of the many occasions when you can teach your kids about the accomplishments of black pioneers and trailblazers.
Children’s books are famously bad at embracing diversity. In 2016, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that out of 3,400 kids’ books, fewer than one-quarter of them featured a main character who was black, Asian, Latino or Native American. So it’s vital that parents share the books that are available with their kids.
Luckily, there are many helpful resources putting these titles within close reach. For Black History Month, Lee & Low Books, a multicultural children’s book publisher, offers helpful book recommendations. Every day in February, The Brown Bookshelf highlights a different black author or illustrator and their work. Helping Kids Rise also participates in a #ReadingBlackout (an initiative to read books by black authors) at the encouragement of YouTuber Denise Cooper.
With suggestions from the organizations above, plus some others, we put together a list of kids’ books by black authors, about black figures or focused on black culture.
