the cool thing about this outfit is that even though I mostly just guessed based on glimpses in blurry screen caps, it still feels like a very "yennifer" outfit even without the coat

Today's project has been attaching the illusion-mesh back so that it's a little more function (that being said have I mentioned that I hate working with stretch fabrics????)
I'll definitely still need a bit of garment tape around the neckline and the tops of the gloves, but as you can see, it's much sturdier

Yennefer Coat Cosplay — Part 1: Design
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okie dokie, I have about a month to get this done, so it's fine to stop beating around the bush. I took a ton of screencaps today and mocked up some pattern-line-drawing-style images of the coat and dress. For the coat, I plan to Frankenstein together two different patterns (one from McCall, the other from Simplicity), but for the dress I'll probably just wing it (although I do have a pattern I'll probably use as a guide for the high-low shape).
Some notes:
The coat bodice fabric appears to be a textured crepe (?) in close-ups, but more important will be matching the color to the contrast panel fabric I already have
I'm 95% certain the coat skirt is constructed in 3 panels (two wide side-front panels + one narrower center back one). From what I can tell, there doesn't appear to be side seams on the coat skirt.
I had a really hard time telling whether the overlaying contrast panels are also lined in purple, but I'll probably do it anyway just 'cuz.
We never actually see the dress bodice sleeves but I'm erring on the side of not overheating (same reason why I'm considering not lining the jacket bodice)
Next step will be creating a mockup and buying fabric!

Yennefer Coat Cosplay — Part 2: Mockup
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over the past couple of days, I've managed to get my mockup mostly assembled!
For the bodice, I used S8769B as a base, modifying the princess seams in the front to be darts and bringing the hemline up to my natural waist. The sleeves are from M7641, unaltered. I drafted the cuffs myself, and I'm still fiddling around with the ideal length/width.
The skirt is just a high-low full circle skirt cut into 3 panels + added seam allowance. The skirt has an outer radius of ~25" in the front (although I think I want to go a little longer in the final version) and ~34" in the back.

As with any circle skirt, it involved a bit of math, but it really wasn't that bad once I remembered that my waist measurement was the circumference of the inner circle, not the diameter 🙈
To determine the arc length for the waist of each panel, I measured the distance between the seams I wanted it to align with on the bodice, and then used a cloth tape measure to approximate that on the circle pattern I cut out.
I was a little worried that a full circle skirt would make the panels lie awkwardly, but I tried the coat on over a maxi dress and with a full skirt (the underdress will be a full circle skirt), and it worked perfectly!
The final step in this mockup will be to add in the decorative panels:

.....I just have to figure out whether I have enough scrap fabric first 😅

it's time to start thinking about dragon con cosplay again~~~
definitely going to bring back ezra & yennifer, but I also want to take on a few new projects.
probably going to do emerie (tbb) (no wig! the electronics in her glasses will be a fun project!)
and also bc I'm reading dunmeshi right now, I think I want to do either marcille (dragon necromancy edition) or namari (no wig! summer friendly!) (or maybe chilchuck?? I feel like that'd be kinda boring costume wise tho)

bought (a lot) of fabric for yennefer today. I also added sleeves to my bodice mockup (very happy!). currently in the process of drafting/draping the jacket skirt, which has involved a LOT of math
