a/n: plot is set during the euro qualifier game against luxembourg in march where he did that celebration with his arms crossed (ifykyk). joão is barça player bc it's perfect for this plot and y/n is barça femeni player. again, perfect for the plot. "papá nos estamos mirando. devuélvenos el saludo." gio begins talking, but you were in your football la-la-land.

i could've done a bicycle kick yesterday, you thought. it could've been my match.

don't you just love it? being in your own thoughts for the 500th time today. sense the sarcasm? "y/n," gio catches your attention, snapping you out of your head. "joão te busca, cariño." [dad is looking for us, wave back. joão is looking for you, sweetheart.]

your eyes run all over the pitch before landing on the squad, joão the second to last guy in the line-up. he sends you a wave, grinning to himself when he sees you facing him. he'd never know if you were making eye contact or not; he was just happy you were there. you wave back at him, not even bothering to hide your smile from your stepmother.

"estoy feliz de que estés feliz. y tienes suerte porque es un chico lindo," gio winks before you both share a laugh; something you missed sharing with georgina. because of your tight schedule and the fact that you play football in spain and don't live in riyadh with your parents and siblings, you'd missed out every single important thing that's happened in the ronaldo house. eva and mateo's sixth birthday, alana's first day of school, bella's first steps, junior joining the al-nassr academy. everything. "¿sabes lo que significa? bebés lindos." [i'm happy you're happy. and you're lucky because he's a cute boy. and you know what that means? cute babies.]

"mamá!" you try to stop gio from going any further. because babies? aren't you too young to be thinking about children right now? your career at barcelona had only begun to skyrocket, and joão had only recently began his season stint at the club. children and settling down should be the last thing on both your minds. although every now and then, you can't help but think about it. would you and joão last long enough for children of your own in the future? "i'm only 22." you mutter under your breath, soft enough for gio to completely miss it.

the referee's whistle snaps you out of your own thoughts — a place you'd often find yourself in when you're out of the pitch. you were worried about the fact that joão barely got to feel the ball. especially after he promised you he'd give you a strike tonight.

"no, i promise," his voice lingers around you from hours ago. "i'll make sure i get the ball, and it's yours, querida. eu prometo." [i promise]

well, he promised — and promises stick with you like gorilla glue. even at the ripe old age of 22, you still believe in pinky promises the way georgina still believes in romance movies. that's besides the point.

it was up till the point after your dad was awarded a penalty. he took it, it went in, your dad is a worldwide legend, blah blah blah. you knew it was bound to happen everytime portugal play. the game was inching up to 14 minutes as your legs begin to bounce nervously. what made it worse was that mateo was on your lap when it happened.

"querida, why are your legs shaking?" mateo's neck cranes to look at you. all you could give him was a weak smile.

"nothing, 'zinho. just nervous for papai like all of us, né?" you answer, hoping mateo will take it and leave it alone.

"you're nervous for joão." if there's one thing you could curse about mateo, it's how close he is to you, even though you no longer live with your family. on his day, mateo would feel lonely — even though he's a twin — and ask gio to facetime you. most of the time, he'd catch you at the right time; driving back home from training, going out for lunch with joão on an off day. and sometimes you wouldn't pick up, occupied with training for the upcoming game that week.

mateo would never fail to call you at least twice a month, understanding how tight your schedule is and that he has to leave you alone sometimes, afraid you'd be exhausted after a long day of training. sometimes you'd give him a call too, missing your queridinho on your day.

"não somos todos?" you nervously chuckle, your hands were resting on mateo's lap, its fingers slowly picking at your cuticles. [aren't we all?]

"si, but you're stressed," mateo pouts. "joão told me you made him promise to score tonight. and you know what, y/n? i hope he scores too." he gives you his typical mateo smile; the absolute sweetest thing you could ever see.

not even a mere few seconds later, a cross from bernardo comes in. you try to anticipate which portugal boy it'd reach. you released a breath you didn't realise you were holding when you see the ball making immediate contact with joão's head, as he nicks the ball in past the luxembourg goalkeeper.

the crowd was anticlimactic, though, you'd have to say. there is a totally valid reason for it. is joão offside or not? the referee blows his whistle, giving the goal to portugal as they now lead the game 2-0. you carefully picked mateo up as you stand, the boy's arms in the air as he celebrates the allowed goal from his hermano. you watch as joão turns to the grandstand your family is situated at.

you can only assume he's looking at you at that point, but gio turns to face you and mateo to state the obvious. "el te esta mirando!" gio screams in a whispery manner. you'd only assumed that, but you were wearing the white portugal away kit, allowing joão to identify you clear as day from the pitch compared to the rest of your family who were clad in black winter coats. you agree, the weather is a bit nippy in luxembourg.

joão looks you dead in the eye — or you assume — and crosses his arms. you immediately realise what it meant, smiling to yourself as your dad, bruno and bernardo begin to crowd him and give him words of congratulations on the smooth yet second nature goal of his.

you wait till after the game, where they defeat luxembourg 6-0 to regroup with joão and cristiano. cris, before anything, would engulf gio and bella first, giving joão full leeway to reach for you first. "did you see?!" the taste of excitement is still sweet and prominent on joão's tongue when he speaks.

"i saw! my celebration at barça. thief." you joke, pushing a fist into his bicep playfully.

"amo-te, linda. obrigado por estar aqui." joão smiles, not hesitating to squish your face into his chest. [i love you beautiful, thank you for being here]

"eu vim buscar o papai, mas tudo bem." you shrug jokingly before finding yourself in your papai's arms and listening to him thank you for coming to a portugal game — an away game, no less. [i came for dad, but okay]

David Manners, 1900-1998

Manners, born in Halifax, Nova Scotia as Rauff Acklom, was the only son of British parents. In 1907 the family relocated to the United States where his father had acquired a job as literary adviser for E.P. Dutton. At 19, young Acklom returned to Canada to study forestry at the University of Toronto and began appearing in school plays. Falling in love with the theater, and against his father’s wishes, Acklom ultimately decided life as an actor was preferable to publishing, and returned to New York to pursue his career. He joined Eva Le Gallienne’s Civic Repertory Company, and received some training (Le Gallienne once told him he was “a very bad actor”), and appeared in several Broadway productions. By 1927 Acklom had relocated to Hollywood and made the acquaintance of director James Whale, at a party, who helped boost his career under the name David Manners (his mother’s maiden name was Manners). Manners appeared in “Kismet,” 1930, and in Katherine Hepburn’s film debut, “A Bill of Divorcement,” 1932, but is perhaps best remembered today for his role as Jonathan Harker in Bella Lugosi’s “Dracula,” released in 1931. Despite achieving leading man status, Manners grew bored and disenchanted with Hollywood, making his last film in 1936, but continued to appear in plays until the early-fifties, then retired from acting altogether. Manner’s first novel, “Convenient Season,” was published in 1941, with another, “Under Running Laughter” following in 1943. Manners subsequently authored several books on philosophy, a particular interest in his later years, along with writing and painting. Manners was briefly married, 1929-1932, but his enduring romantic relationship was with playwright Frederic William Mercer, from their meeting in 1948, until Mercer’s death in 1978.

David Manners died in a retirement center in Santa Barbara, California in 1998.

My memory is poor. As for the purposes of updating, I will add new postings to the top of the list. Albeit not alphabetized in this manner, it is easier to maintain. I started the list so I would have all of the artists I love, places I've been, websites I like, all at a glance whenever I work on projects. Then I decided to share it. I mean, why not! Bio: She’s the daughter of Tallest Red and Eva. The eldest of her littermates. Even for her young age, Bella is an intelligent girl and a wide thinker. Ready to grasp new knowledge and tackle every obstacle in her way. She and her brothers and sister have been kept in their mother’s nest while she worries herself on what to do with them. Little Bella was the first to leave her mother’s side to go play. Then came Nixy, Jovian and last, Orieon, who was a bit of a clinger a while longer before he joined them. Over the days of being out and about. The four smeets enjoyed their free time, wondering around the house, touching things and getting familiar with all the different scents they’ve came in contact with. Over the years, Bella began developing intelligence. Some that no normal vortian could grasp in under a short time. Eva figured that their Irken side is in effect and their brains are working like a pal brain, but without the pap to download everything to advance their knowledge. Bella wanted to be a scientist when she grows up. Eva got to work on getting her in as one of the apprentice at the neutralien school of science. That is also where her brothers and sister went too. Over the times of her study, Bella has grown an interest in genetic engineering and the advancement of new technology. It’s an eye opener once she realizes that planet Neutra has many natural resources that can be used for many methods for building new things. Bella wants to be someone that can be remembered for generations to come.

Bella’s not one to play dumb for others. She knows who her real friends and allies are. She hears the rumors and whispers that some people around her say about her when Eva’s not paying attention. The young hybrid had dealt with the headache of keeping her littermates from going at each other’s throats. There were many occasions where Bella had caught one or two of them sneaking out of the house to do, who knows what? She only informed her mother about it, if the situation is a safety risk to the family. Bella saw a family of neutraliens and a thought came to mind. Who was her father? Where is he now and why hasn’t her mother spoke of him? She decided to ask but Eva didn’t give her the answers she had hoped for. So the other option was to go snooping. Bella dug into her mother’s tablet and found some interesting and disturbing entries. Some regarding her time on an Irken warship. This is where her father was introduced. Bella was shocked at how things were for her mother back then and it almost made her resent her father for making Eva go through all that. But after meeting Tallest Red, she had some changed options about him. Especially after watching how close he was getting with Eva. Tallest Red had a soft spot for bellatrix in a similar way as her mother. There’s a lot that Bella has to learn, and adapt to. Though she was the first to adapt using her customized pak that her mother made for her and the others. Now she’s focused on understanding the the use of of it. Digging into the Irken history and learning about what made them decide to use it.

Likes: Cooking with her mother,learning about her vortian heritage, getting tops scored in her test, researching, sweets, cleanliness, watching television and documentaries, designing, crafting,music, singing, knowing more about other alien species, art.

Dislikes: Seeing her younger siblings fighting, high pitch sounds, flashing lights, bland food, being treated like an outcast, racist comments about her being a half-breed, getting her cloths dirty, blobs.

Personalities: Caring, loving, fair, loyal, stern, Calm and collected, understanding, patient, reliable, witty.

*RELATIONSHIPS*

Eva: Some people thought she was Eva at first. Others thought Bella’s her twin. That all ended when they found out that she’s Eva’s daughter. The relationship between these two are the same as some mothers with their daughters have. Bellatrix shares her mother’s habit of taking notes and documenting everything of great value to her. She even takes after Eva’s horn grooming process. Bella looks after her younger siblings just as her mother does. Making sure all the chores are done. Keeping her troubled brothers in check. Bella also learned how to creole from Eva, learning all the vortian recipes. Just like her littermates, Bella was wonder about her father’s identity. The stories told to them when they were little seems almost too good to be true, so she went digging into her mother’s stuff and found her table, which had the Irken symbol on it. Opened it up and read her journal entries. Some were off topic while others describe Eva’s experience with an Irken. Bella only gotten through most of it before asking about it to her mother. She never imagined that her father is the leader of the Irken race. It surprised her even more that they are the ones concurring planets and wiping out species. When the day finally came for her and the others to meet tallest Red. It was nerve wracking and it gave Bella mixed emotions. One sided is resentment because of what he made Eva go through. On the other hand, she want to get to know her father the same way her mother did. What made these two click? Eva watched her kids grow and find their own interest. She helped each of them get the proper training, planet Neutra haves to offer. Bella got involved in science. It’s surprising that the neutralien’s allowed such young kids take these kinds of things. Bella being ten, with a mind of a late teenager, has passed the basic learning process in her class. Eva is most proud of her daughter. To all her children and will continue to guide and watch over them as they take their first step into society on this new planet.

Tallest Red: Her father took one look at her and immediately thought she was Eva. That was until he noticed the antennas between her horns. Bella felt awkward since he was brought to the house to meet he and his other children. One weird thing that he did was using his antennas to scent them. At lease Bella, Jovian and Orieon, since they are the ones with antennas. Tallest Red was obviously knew to the whole family thing. And from what Eva told them, the Irkens of today are all born from cloning. Though back then they were able to repopulate the natural way. Bella can see why Jovian out of all of them was very interested in getting closer to their father. Even after just meeting him. From what was told to her, shorter irkens look up to their tallest and are ready to to do anything to earn their respect, approval and trust. Her brother is instinctively acting in this manner and it looked kind of pathetic, really. Tallest Red obviously kept a lot of secrets because she found out that he made her mother work for him and tricked her into staying on the massive longer than expected. That and how he he wasn’t there to ensure her safety after being attacked more than once and almost got sexually assaulted in her own room. This came after Bella was eavesdropping on their conversation in her mother’s room. She has mix feelings about her father since then. One is that he’s a Irken leader, dead set on galactic conquest like the rest of his kind. And on the other hand, Tallest Red is being gentle with Eva. It’s kind of hard to place a hate on him when he’s not of any threat to her. Bella still wants to at least get to know her father before any judgment is done. Red has given his daughter similar treatment and the acknowledgement.

Jovian: She loves her brother but he can be a real pain in the ass. Always trying to prove himself better than everyone else. He’s loud and demanding. Doesn’t consider the consequences of his own actions. Bella had to remind him that SHE’S the oldest, not him. She can’t count how many times she had to heal him up after a hard self training session. Or that she had to yell at him and Orieon to stop with the petty arguments. Jovieon does listen to her though. One reason is because she looks like their mother and that she is the oldest and he has to remain respectful of that. Eva explain this is something vortians do, and is impressed that this mannerism from her culture is starting to show in her children. Bella confronts Jovian on many occasions. One regarding him sneaking out at night to go to the neutralien’s control base, just next to the ship’s storage units. Bella caught him taking equipments and parts from broken down machines in one of the empty rooms. Scolding him seems like a daily job at this point and it only took one particular argument to get him to stop being so reckless and disobedient. Jovian means well but he’s never got a firm talk with anyone other than his mother and his siblings. Since their father came into their lives out of nowhere, he’s been trying to get his attention. Being the big sister that she is. Bella took care of him and reminded Jovian that he doesn’t have to win their father’s approval because he’s got that with his siblings and their mother. Besides, tallest Red is still a stranger to them and there’s no reason to be comfortable with him right away. Jovian behavior over time began to settle and is now less of a reckless mess than before.

Nixy: Bellatrix finds her sister as her equal. They both had similar interest in things they want to enroll in. Nixy is a hard working girl, even at a young age. The two are often seen together. Working on a experiment or just talking to each other. Bella is aware that she and her sister are hybrids with a more vortian appearance and are treated it as bad as their brothers that look Irken. She never let it bother her that some aliens are distrustful of her family because they do not know who fathered them but assumed it was an Irken of great importance. Nixy is a genius. Using the knowledge of her Irken side to set codings and encryptions to their power system. Bella made the cover up to make sure that the neutraliens don’t dig too deep into their personal lives out of suspicion. These two are the core of their family while their brothers are the backbone in the front line defenses.

Orieon: No matter how old or tall he gets. Bella will always see him as her little brother. There is a good relation between the two and it is shown throughout their smeethood. Bella knows he’s a good kid and wouldn’t do anything to damage himself in any way. Orieon has already been coddled and spoiled by their mother, but it was Bella who help get him out of that phase. It’s not shocking that he was t to make friends with everyone on the planet, despite having some who look at him and only see a tyrant Irken. Both Bella and Jovian had to give their little brother a reality check about plans for his own future. Orieon is will listen to his older sister and take her advice more seriously than their other two siblings. Just as he is defensive with Of Eva, he also does the same for her.

Dib: Just like her brothers and sister, Bella has never met a human before. Their mom showed them images of aliens she has ever encountered and with details of their species on her tablet, but nothing on Dib’s species. It’s still weird to her that this human is wearing an Irken pak like it’s the best fashion style to have. Only to find out the real reason for it from Zim. Bella, Jovian, Nixy and Orieon surrounded Dib like a sworm and starts touching him, poking at his most ticklish spots. Tugging at his hair, think it was an antenna. She snatched his glasses while the other three pretty much dog piled the boy to the ground. Bella can’t sense anything dangerous from this guy. Not like the feeling she gets from Zim, after the way he introduced himself. From what her mother told her, Dib assist in the escape from the massive while there was a battle going on between the armada and a rebellious group of aliens, lead by a vortian. Bella would like to one day meet this person.

Zim: She didn’t get a good first impression with him. He was all over the place with his attitude. Zim’s behavior reminds Bella of her brother, Jovian. Especially if he doesn’t get what he wants. When he and Dib stayed over at Eva’s place for a while, Bella took note of them. Ever so curious, she got some answers out of that Zim. Answers that her mother held back for her sake. The Irken passed along the message that the the tallest has escaped captivity and there’s a possible chance one in particular will be coming after Eva. It’s news like this that made Bella form a security system to their house. Zim gave her, Jovian and Orieon their own Irken tablet before he and Dib left planet Neutra. Bella caught the coding tracker for Zim’s voot cruiser, just in case they need it for later use. Zim has no idea this happened.

“Are you assuming that I’m preparing you for a battle that you’re not ready to experience?”

“But that’s just it! We’re NOT like them. We may wear their paks but that doesn’t mean we have to follow their rules. Our paks are not encoded with any manipulative forces, Jovian! Mother made an exact copy from the old blueprints she downloaded into her tablet system. We walk freely. Not march around like mindless drones in the Irken empire!”

“Not only did he abandoned his duties but now he’s got the whole planet of irk coming for him. What was my father thinking landing here like this?”

“Nixy, The only differences between us and those two is that we have a brain and we use it well.”

“My antennas are itchy! Someone must be talking about me behind my back. Now who is it?”

“Mom, have you ever considered finding yourself a decent male vortian? What about that blue guy from the techno shop in town? He seems to like you.”

“That’s not what i meant. We’re ten year old kids but our mentalities are much older. This is dues to sharing both irken minds and Vortians. Remember what dad said to us before he left. We are more ready to take on the world on our on now.”

“I wonder if dad will come back to visit us.? Mom said she’s not sure. He’s a wanted man and the neutralien authorities are looking for him.”

“Wow! So that’s what planet irk is like, Zim? Why did you gave that up and stayed with human Dib? You said you two used to be enemies. Are you together?”

“Stop screeching at me! You’re hurting my antennas. You’re not the only one who read through our mother’s journal entries, and I am just as angry. Don’t lecture me about how I should deal with this, Orieon. She lied to us and I know you want to confront her about it but keep a level head, please!”

They’re in the Department of Mysteries. Bellatrix is cackling because lightning strikes are in the air, and the thrill of death chases her every step.

Then, everything stops.

It’s just her and the girl. It’s her and the girl who looks just like her mother. Her hair is long and blonde and tangled. Her eyes are bright and brilliant and blue.

Bellatrix swears she’s seen a ghost.

“I believe I was meant to find you,” the girl says and shows her a picture from an ancient time. When Bellatrix was young and beautiful and loved. A picture of Her.

She stuns the girl and leaves her there, but the girl’s image follows her. It follows her home, to the bath, to the bed. Until the girl is all Bellatrix can think about, and she knows she must see her again.

“You foolish girl,” Bellatrix hisses, “I will hurt you just as easily as I would hurt anyone else.”

She backs the girl up against the edge of the astronomy tower. It’s a long way down, but Bellatrix is not afraid to fall. She has already fallen.

“No, you won’t. I know you won’t,” replies the girl — naively, stupidly. Because Bellatrix has killed more people than this girl can possibly fathom. She has bathed in rivers of blood, cracked the skulls of her enemies then hung them above her mantle.

But the girl continues to hold her so gently, look at her so fondly, that an idea begins to form.

The girl is still a student, still so pure, still so impressionable.

Bellatrix visits her every day the summer before her Sixth Year. She talks with her in the garden, caresses her sun-kissed skin, and bestows seventeen deliberately laid kisses on the girl’s birthday.

Every day the nights grow longer, the web spins tighter.

The girl looks just like Her, smells like Her, sounds like Her. If Bellatrix imagines, she’s twenty years in the past with a head full of nargles and eyes full of stars.

“Bella,” the girl calls her one day, just like Her, and Bellatrix’s breath catches.

She cannot live without the girl any longer. She knows the girl cannot live without her either.

Bellatrix books a room above the Three Broomsticks on Valentine’s Day.

She is careful not to mark the girl’s porcelain skin. She is gentle as she works her fingers inside. She is worshipful as she traces the swell of the girl’s breasts, as she nips at the ridges of her collarbone. She coaxes musical moans from her throat. 

She does not allow the girl to touch her.

“I want you to gasp my name,” the girl blurts out, and Bellatrix falters.

The girl is in her bed, in her arms, but it’s Her who is in her mind, her memories. When she brings the girl to orgasm, Her name lingers on her lips. She does not allow it to spill out.

oi cib, salvadora dos autores de fanfic e roleplayers desse brasil, tudo bem? eu estou escrevendo uma história interativa que se passa na era vitoriana, você poderia me dar algumas sugestões de atores e atrizes que fizeram filmes/séries de época, mais ou menos da segunda metade do século 19? a fanfic se passa em 1888 especificamente, mas se tiverem qualquer material entre 1850-1900 funciona. eu já tenho alguns fcs em mente para os meus personagens, mas eu queria deixar uma listinha para leitores que estiverem sem ideias. obrigado desde já, amo seu trabalho.

The Sims:

Dina Caliente-Goth, Xenobia Goth

The story so far: After she had been thrown out by her mother because of her affair with Don Lothario. Dina dealt with Bella in a sauna. Shortly after she started an affair with Mortimer, who married her when she fell pregnant. He had been left with Bellas triplets Benjamin, Theresa and Steff. Dina however knew they were not his and had them brought to their uncle Mercutio. Dinas and Mortimers daughter Xenobia was born shortly after. While Mortimer was alive she had very caring parents and continued to be the best daughter she could be. Always the social climber Nina treid to arrange a marriage between Xenobia and Juliette Capps oldest son Orlando. Xenobia was not to enthusiastic about that idea as she had a girlfriened in Eva. Sadly they broke up over that. Still Xenobia would like to break it of.

To apease her mother she went to prom with Orlando, platonicly and told him about her oppinion on the enagement.

To help with the bills they started a rose garden and got a money tree.

Dina got along with the bees rather well.

They do have two dogs named Bruno and Spatula

Mold apparently can effect dogs too. Dina likes to go jogging with them.

To celebrate Xenobias Young Adult birthday Dina made a healthy cake.

Notes:

Money tree: I don't like to get it, but in houses that I don`t want to have money troubles I do allow them to get one.

A Hit, A Miss, and the In-Betweens

So if you read a book that’s not necessarily your favorite, does that annoy you or does it make you that much more appreciative for the ones that are really, really good?  In my case:  BOTH.  Although if I read too many that aren’t so great in a row, I get crabby---seriously.  Life is too short for just “so-so” books, right?  But on the other hand, how do you know when a lousy book is going to make some incredible shifts and turn out to be one of the best things you’ve ever read??  I don’t really think that happens very often, to tell the truth…but that doesn’t stop me from plowing through with hope, because you just never know!

Last Known Location by Eva Mackenzie

Gwen’s been having issues with her ex-boyfriend; he wants to play mind games and since she was in too deep, it’s hard for her to break free and move on.  When she goes on a quick hiking trip in her area, she meets a very nice, VERY good-looking man, but he’s left the campsite when she wakes up the next day so that’s that.  Until a few days later when Gwen is on her shift as a nurse at the hospital and this stranger is brought in---bloody and without a memory.  The story takes off from there, and while Gwen is trying not to get too involved with this stranger (who might be dangerous), it’s not until she realizes she’s being stalked that she knows for certain that something is up.  I think this story had a pretty good premise, although Gwen comes across as a bit naïve at times.  The problem was I didn’t find her very likeable, and then I found areas where the leaps of logic were just too great.  I wanted to like this one more, but in the end, it was just okay for me.

One day in 1975, Jane Larkin goes out to run some errands and never comes home, leaving her husband and three young children in an constant state of wondering what happened to her.  As the children grow up, the younger two (and investigators) begin to believe their father is responsible, and that their mother is likely dead.  Since there’s no proof and no body to be found, Jane’s husband is never charged with a crime…and even after her remains are found some 20-yrs later, there still aren’t any suspects.  This is the same author who wrote Defending Jacob, and just like with that book, I found myself completely immersed in the story.  The characters are so real, the descriptions so good, that I could practically see this all play out in my head like my own little movie.  Highly recommend!

Not That Kind Of Ever After by Luci Adams

Bella is an almost-30yr old singleton, living in London, dreaming about the perfect “happily ever after” she always read about as a girl and now mourns the fact that she simply cannot find it for herself.  After a particularly awful “date” (the term is being used very loosely here) and a very frank conversation with her best friend’s brother, Bella writes up her fairytale evening turned nightmare…and it goes viral.  So even though Bella was having a hard time before, now she has a full blown following, all waiting to see what comes next, and she’s  more than happy to oblige—at least until it all starts to spiral out of control.  Cute book, kind of predictable and a bit unrealistic, but a nice “chick lit” type of book to pass the time.

The Book Woman’s Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson

As a follow-up to The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, it’s now the early 1950s.  Although some progress has been made in favor of females and the “blue folk,” it’s really not to the point where 16yr-old Honey Lovett, the adopted daughter of Jackson Lovett and Cussie Mary (“Bluet”), can be truly free.  During a period of time when her parents can’t care for her, Honey needs to use her smarts and the kindness of her friends from Troublesome to gain independence---although, just like with her mother, this is easier said than done.  Even though both of these books can be emotionally distressing at times, given the fact that these women have to live during very hard times in places where the law is not in their favor, they are also incredibly rewarding.  Richardson is a brilliant writer, and I found myself falling in love with her characters---hoping she finds a way to give us more.

Not A Happy Family by Shari Lapena

It’s Easter Sunday, and the Merton family is gathering together at their parent’s home in upstate NY, the estate where each of the children were raised.  During the course of the dinner, Fred Merton (the father and patriarch of the family) manages to insult each of his three children, lording his extreme wealth and success over them until they reach a breaking point and all leave.   Two days later, the housekeeper finds Fred and his wife brutally murdered, and with millions of dollars as a motive, a father who is downright cruel and a mother who sits silently by, it’s only natural that the police look to the adult children as possible suspects.  Like her other works, this is a fast paced, hang by the edge of your seat mystery that I could not put down.  Without spoiling the ending, I’ll just say that all the the characters were a bit unlikeable, so I don’t think the “who dunnit” really mattered all that much!

When In Doubt, Add Butter by Beth Harbison

Gemma works as a personal chef, which doesn’t leave her much time for her own personal life.  But on a unexpected evening out with a friend, she meets a guy that she can’t seem to get over.  Unfortunately, with her work life going haywire, the last thing she has time to worry about is her love life.  At least, that’s the case until something comes up that makes her realize she’s going to have to make time---and soon.  Great story with fun, descriptive characters.  I love all of Beth Harbison’s books, especially when I need something a little lighter---would make a perfect vacation book!
