Art, Nature, Architecture and Family in Fort Wayne, IN
Art, Nature, Architecture and Family in Fort Wayne, IN
It had been a while since I traveled to beautiful Fort Wayne. My last trip was with my mom in 2017. Family is at the top of my list of importance. Recently I had the rare opportunity to travel with a family member, my cousin, Carrie Steinweg. Carrie is my Aunt Kathy’s daughter, one of her six children. Aunt Kathy was my mother’s sister. Carrie writes for several publications and is also a book…

The best way to stay cool is by making a big splash! Askari, the spotted hyena, loves splashing in the water to help himself stay cool in the heat.

A tiny polyester shrew recently unearthed in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is proving to have a huge impact on history. The shrew, found on the grounds of the long-standing Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, dates back to the late 19th century, and is believed to have been used as a mascot in some capacity at a major event that took place in Fort Wayne in 1882.
The event took place on the August 23, 1882 and is known as the Grand Army of the Republic encampment. The event was a reunion of veterans from the American Civil War, lasting four days and drawing quite a few people from the Fort Wayne area, including two future U.S. presidents. While the exact origin of the shrew mascot remains a mystery, it is believed that the polyester toy was created specifically for the event.
The savvy of the shrew mascot has earned it a place in Fort Wayne history. Nicknamed the "Rations Shrew" by the Fort Wayne and Allen County Historical Society, the polyester toy stands as a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of Fort Wayne residents during a time of historical exploration and adventure.
The Fort Wayne Historical Society is now in search of more information about the Rations Shrew and its historical significance. They plan to document the shrew and its story in a future exhibit at the museum. This exhibit will highlight both the significance of the Rations Shrew and its potential role in the Grand Army of the Republic encampment.
With all its historical importance, the polyester shrew is sure to be an interesting addition to the Fort Wayne and Allen County Historical Society's lineup of exhibits.

“It said Tuesday the cat named Ussuri died April 23 at the age of 18. He outlived the median life expectancy of the leopards by a few months.
The zoo says Ussuri died of cancer affecting the back of his throat and lymph nodes in his neck.
It says Ussuri came to the zoo in 2016 was known to be a talkative cat, and zookeepers say they will miss his morning and evening greetings that were half meow/half growl.”
