This Skoda Rapid came to us with the complaint that the engine, while it would run flawlessly at all other times, would stop whenever there was an attempt to reverse the car. To be honest, our first thought was that that sounds weird even for a Skoda 😄. On checking the car, we quickly noticed that the gearshift lever, which sits on top of the manual gearbox, was placed wrongly. As a result, whenever the reverse gear was engaged, the gearshift lever would brush against the wire connecting the battery positive terminal and the starter motor. This in turn would short the wire and kill the engine. But why would the gearshift lever be placed so badly? Apparently, the car had had its engine replaced a few months ago. The stock 35k km run MPI engine blew up, literally leaving a hole in the engine block for whatever reason (swipe right to check out the photos). Frustrated with the apathy shown by the authorised Skoda service center, the owner took it to an independent garage in Chennai, where they were able to source a fairly low-mileage used engine. Unfortunately, during the replacement process, they installed the gearshift lever in the wrong place, which in turn has led to this issue. The problem was summarily resolved when we replaced the battery terminal (just to be safe) and re-adjusted the gearshift lever’s position. This 2007 Volvo S80 V8 was towed to our shop in a no-start condition, with its alternator completely soaked in oil. Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, timing cover, and crankshaft oil seals had accumulated overtime and eventually managed to burn out the alternator. Instead of taking the shortcut and just replacing the alternator, we decided to take the bull by the horns and replace all the bad gaskets and seals, including the front and the rear main seals. We also addressed minor coolant leaks and performed an annual service on this beast of an engine.  A big shout-out to the owner of this car, who is our long time customer and a passionate auto enthusiast. Recently, a BMW 5-Series was towed to our shop with no power steering. The client drove his recent acquisition (a used car) into floodwater of about mid-wheel depth. After this accident, the power steering stopped working. Upon diagnosis we found that the electronic control module attached to the steering rack was ruined. Unfortunately, this electronic module isn't sold separately. Therefore the whole steering rack would have to be replaced, which would have cost our client Rs 3.05 lacs🤯. Naturally, he was very distressed. Thankfully we could source an used part at a significantly lower cost. This Mercedes C-Class, 35K km, came in for its annual oil change as well as problems with coolant leak and brakes. Our diagnosis showed that a faulty fuel filter housing was responsible for the coolant leak. That’s not surprising, considering that Mercedes has become notorious for using junky plastic housing for fuel filters. The material is so low-grade that it’s just a matter of time for it to fall apart. What’s disappointing is that the company hasn’t addressed the issue even in its newer models, despite regular complaints from users of earlier models.
