Goku and Sailor Moon as a romantic couple, an analysis
"Two people from different worlds have more in common than what meets the eye".
In this Analysis, I will explain why I see Goku and Sailor moon as the perfect pairing and OTP material.
Important note before beginning: This analysis refers to when they have an age gap of 1 year (teenage years) or three or five (When they are young adults or full-grown adults). since I only ship them in those conditions.
Ok, with that out of the way, let's begin!
First, we need to explain their character separately and break them down their sides.
I will right away note that I will be explaining most of Dragon ball til the GT timeline, I will not talk about the super Goku at all.
Son Goku (The Earthling)
Goku was raised by his grandfather Son Gohan since he found him as a little kid, Goku was taught by him martial arts in a place far from society in the mountains.
He was a bad child with Son Gohan until he hit his head hard, making him had a change in his personality.
Goku since then was a child known for his innocence, friendliness, and pure heart. Making him an ignorant about a lot of social norms and appearance's after his grandfather's early passing since he didn't have someone to teach him more about those things until he met Bulma.
With their adventures, he began to gain a teacher and a deep friendship thanks to his kindness and support. Of course, he also wanted to fight and get strong but the bond he formed in his pre-teen and teenager days will follow him in his future years on adulthood.
Even though he has a tail as a kid he knows he is an earthling.
Kakarot (His saiyan side)
Later in the story, there will be a revelation that Goku is actually a Saiyan, a person of a different race that was sent from another planet to conquer earth.
There will also reveal his real name, Kakarot.
Which Goku at first ignores, not wanting to have something in common with his own brother (Raditz) and Vegeta.
It doesn't matter if he is indifferent about it first because blood is blood and it only took him time to finally show that he was a Saiyan after he lost his tail.
His super Saiyan transformation.
He is a Saiyan because of his pure origins race, no matter what.
Goku (The Saiyan earthing)
It took time for Goku to acknowledge that he was a Saiyan verbally since he still is an earthling since he was raised on earth. Nevertheless, he now accepts his roots and is proud of being a part of both sides.
This becomes more apparent in GT when he conquers the big ape form and transforms in the purest and rawest version of himself.
SSJ4 Goku:
Becoming more savage and brutal while retaining his human side and empathy.
Serena/Usagi Tsukino
I will for now on refer to Usagi as Serena since I saw it with the Mexican dub and I mostly refer to her as Serena. (And this is a personal preference so yeah)
Serena Tsukino is a girl who loves to eat, fall in love, read manga, play video games, and lazy around. She has bad grades and doesn't like to study, she also is friendly and makes friends easily because of how expressive, friendly and open she is to new people.
She is ready to help her friend by being a listener and being there to cheer someone up.
She is far from perfect since she is also a crybaby and doesn't like when things don't go her way.
Sailor Moon
Sailor Moon is a guardian who fights evil by the name of the moon, she is the protector of earth and even though her beginnings are rough since she didn't want to fight, she slowly began to fill her role as a guardian to protect the people she loves.
It didn't matter that she was scared and still gets scared at some point later in her story, but the thing that makes her a worthy warrior is that she still fights and becomes better as time goes on as a person who defends earth. because she wants to protect the people she cares about
Princess Serenity
Serena's past life, the princess of the fallen Moon Kingdom is a part of herself. The royalty personality she once had as a princess is gone but her presence in the story is as powerful since is a part of her now.
Princess Serenity is a part of her heritage, the only survivor of her race. She is Serena's future as Neo Queen Serenity but she is also her present. The silver crystal is what connects Serena with her tragic past and only when she uses it is when her royalty blood appears again in the form of her dress and the moon sign on her forehead.
She is the past, present, and future of Serena/Sailor Moon, her moon race that is shown in important times just to remind her that she is the reincarnation of a royal princess and the power she heritage with. If Sailor Moon is defined by her bravery, it can be said that princess Serenity Is the maturity of her as a person. Accepting her past with a mix of her present, since the original princess Serenity never fought.
Why do they work?
First for a couple to work they need to have things in common or similarities in their narrative.
So I will explain first the most basic similarities.
Goku and Serena both are from different race. Serena's past life was as a Moon citizen who was a royal and Goku was from planet Vegeta, however, they both got raised on earth.
Both of them don't admit at first what they are, but in the later narrative, they accept themselves as who they are.
They both are protectors of the earth, being the most powerful in each of their universes as their story progresses.
Now in characterization, they both have things in common. Their love for eating.
They have goofy sides and are both innocent.
Lastly and a funny one, both of them don't like needles.
If we see put their differences together, they can teach each other one positive things.
Sailor Moon would teach him more about social norms and more about having a great time without training all the time meanwhile Goku can help her in getting better at defending herself in battle and attacking.
Narratives in common
As many similarities as these two characters have they also share two important ones in their respective storyline.
Time travel
It's interesting how both of them have time travelers and how both they are people they will get to know in the future ( With Serena is her own future daughter Rini or Chibiusa meanwhile with Goku is Trunks, the son of his first friend Bulma and his self-called rival and fellow Saiyan, Vegeta).
Both manage to change the future in some way when it were in the direst situation and managed to become more powerful to defeat early a future threat in the Cell saga (Dragon Ball Z) and Black moon saga (Sailor Moon R).
Different Universes
This is an important part of the narrative that is also essential in both of their universes.
With Sailor Moon we know thanks to the manga "Parallel Moon" that they do exist alternate universes in this universe as we see a different version of Serena and her friends being married and having all daughters (In Serena's case she has another daughter who is younger than Rini)
And with Dragon Ball is an entire plotline of its own, where there is a section called "Time Patrollers" who are guided by the Kai of Time to protect the timelines and different universes. The universes form from single actions or moments that change history and become a separate and own narrative on their own. Goku in this universe is a Time Patroller who tries to keep everything in check.
It was even considered that GT is an alternate universe of Dragon Ball Z after Dragon Ball Super began with a new storyline. Making both stories canon but in different realities.
Canon storylines and bases of the source material make it work
As mentioned before, they have a lot of things in the common narrative, so it doesn't make it a stretch or impossibility for them to actually meet.
In a different universe or thanks to time travel they could meet and it doesn't destroy the source material and canon storylines. It isn't out of character for them to cross paths because their narratives give the sources and material that nod that it could actually happen.
It helps that their storylines have things that the other storyline also have. They both fight humans, roots of evil, and aliens, making them work together quite easily and having them understand most of the time right away their situations and help out.
It doesn't matter if they are in the past, present, or future. They can both fight for the same reason and are the most powerful beings in each part of their stories in any of the mentioned times.
An alliance makes perfect sense when fighting a stronger opponent.
That's interesting but how and why would Goku fall in love with Sailor Moon and still be in character for him?
The moon has been a part of his character since the beginning of Dragon ball's story, being the catharsis to make him transform into a great ape when he sees the moon at the time he had his tail and being the thing that makes him connect the dots of the similarity between him and the first Saiyans he meets.
We can see that the Saiyans have a strong connection to the moon because it gives them tremendous power. So, it makes sense for Goku to be interested in her at first thanks to her moon vibes, aside from her warrior side she has something that his Saiyan blood has a reaction to.
Counting all the things they had in common and how easily they make friends, is no surprise how they right away may form a strong friendship that as time goes on can become into a strong romantic relationship thanks to their partnership in fighting evil.
They could interact a lot as partners in battle and have relaxing times when there isn't a fight.
They both could have an equal relationship in battle, believing in each other strength and saving the other when the situation calls it.
This bond could get only stronger. Making Goku experience for the first time a deep romantic bond, since Saiyan men are attracted to strong women, and what better moment for him to fall in love than interacting with her in his ambient? Were his strongest bonds formed, in a fight or battle.
Why are they more interesting together than being with their canon partners?
One word: Equality
The faults of Serena and Darien/ Usagi and Mamoru.
Serena is the strongest of the two of them, making most of their situation swapped from the lady in distress to the gentleman in distress.
In both, the manga and the 90's anime Mamoru is used to have a positive or negative development on Serena.
In the manga, Sailor Moon repeats her last life mistake and kills her lover and herself after seeing that he went full evil. At some point with the power of her friends who died giving her strength she only cares about her lover.
She, later on, becomes jealous of her own daughter, who is stealing her boyfriend's attention when her friends were literally getting abducted.
In most of the arcs of the manga, Darien is abducted, cursed, and even killed so they can make Sailor Moon move forward. He's her incentive, she needs to protect him and save him.
The relationship is more mature in the manga and deeper. However, Darien is still used as a way to move Sailor Moon so she can develop without caring about his strength as a character. Of course, he also develops but he would never be on equal footing as Serena in power or as an ally, he's the tool to make her grow.
He saved her at first of course as Tuxedo mask, but as she grew he began to feel more at the sides. No matter his new powers or crystal, he is still used as a tool.
In the 90's anime, they at first hate each other but after knowing their identity and past selves they fall in love, but they lack communication here. We can talk about Serena and Darien's break-up arc or how most of the time Darien and Serena didn't have things in common besides their past lives.
The forgotten bond between Goku and Milk/ Chichi
First of all, they both got to know each other as preteens. Where Milk was the first one to fall in love with Goku.
Later, Milk asks him if they will get married in the future, and Goku, being ignorant about what marriage means, mistakes it for free food.
They meet again years later as teens in the martial tournament. When she gets angry after he didn't recognize her and was sad when she noticed that he forgot about their promise, even Goku admitted after that he trough it was something about food.
However, Goku promised that he would marry her so he does even if he doesn't feel anything for her yet.
Their relationship is different and not as strong as Vegeta and Bulma. Even if he has two kids with her he hasn't shown any hard romantic attraction to her.
Don't get me wrong, Goku learned to care for her with time and he likes her but it's clear that hard romantic love isn't a thing with him at least. They are shown to argue a lot and there isn't chemistry most of the time.
Are Milk/Chichi and Darien/Mamoru bad characters then?
Of course not! Both of them are amazing characters that grow in their series. That's why the way they are treated by their authors is unfair, both of them as individuals are smart and strong. The authors could have made them as equal to their loved ones but one was forgotten most of the time from the battlefield and the other was just used like a puppet for the other one to grow.
Conclusion
Goku and Sailor Moon's interaction and development are the most interesting part of them. They can relate to many things and they can work together quite well. They both can make the other grow as a person and become more powerful.
The romance between them would take time and would be quite different and exciting depending on the context they meet. Making more room in knowing each other and interacting more before true romantic feelings even begin to appear on one of the sides because one thing can be true, at least both of them would feel curiosity or attraction to each other when they first meet.
Also, the situations they can be in are endless, in both works, there is time travels and different universes so they can meet each other in one of those universes.
Afterwords:
You can ship whatever you want! This analysis was made so I could explain why I ship Gokusere so much and why I can't see them with their canon partners anymore. If you like the canon pairings better that's fine too! We are here to share not to judge.
