A series of phone calls as Stede and Ed go from childhood friends, to adults who can't connect, to something more.
“What are we going to do?” Stede asks.
Ed doesn’t need him to clarify. The real question: how are they going to stay friends?
Ed racks his brain for anything that might cheer him up. “I guess we’ll do what we always do. You can call if you miss me.”
It’s quiet for so long Ed wonders if he didn’t say the right thing, but then, “I’m gonna call you all the time.” There’s a grin in his voice that Ed can’t help but match. Smiling at the stars like some kind of fool. “You might get annoyed.” A laugh escapes before Ed can catch it which only encourages Stede. “I mean it! You’re going to wake up to messages from me and get calls in the middle of the night. You might even grow to hate me.”
He can’t get the smile out of his voice when he says, “doubt that.”
It’s quiet again, comfortable. A silence Ed has spent more time in than anything else. Stede gives an unsteady sigh. “I should get back before my father comes looking for me.”
Ed swallows. “’Night, Stede.”
“Goodnight.”
The line clicks dead. It’s tempting to stay out here and freeze himself to the moment, basking in the glow of Stede’s voice, in the promise of a future.
Before he can really decide one way or another, before the line has even been dead for a few seconds, the phone in his hand starts screaming.
“Um,” he answers, “didn’t we just say goodbye?”
And even though Stede is somewhere else entirely, through a long and winding series of telephone wires, Ed can hear the smile in his voice as he answers like it’s the most obvious thing in the world:
“I missed you.”
