A GATEWAY TO POSSIBLE WORLDS Art & science-fiction Nov 05, 2022 - Apr 10, 2023 CURATED BY Alexandra Müller, research assistant and curator at Centre Pompidou-Metz The American writer Ray Bradbury said: "Science fiction is the art of the possible." Under the guise of anticipating the future, it speaks to us of the present. It is a laboratory of hypotheses that manipulate and extrapolate the repressive norms and dogmas of today's world, its ambitions, social afflictions, opportunities and perils. A Gateway To Possible Worlds exhibition brings together over 200 works from the late 1960s to the present day. Art & science fiction whisks visitors away to a 2300m² sci-fi world. It puts the spotlight on the bonds between imaginary worlds and our reality with the help of artists, authors, architects and film directors. It builds on current demands for 21st century utopias to spark debate, inspiration and a form of hope. #GordonCheung #pompidoumetz (at Centre Pompidou-Metz) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmcI7S4Iiz-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I originally worked on this poppy pattern art as part of my collaboration with artist Gordon Cheung (@gordoncheung). In our piece, we addressed the tragic murder of Vincent Chin and the historical use of anti-Asian imagery and symbols in Western culture. The poppy is a beautiful flower with many symbolic interpretations, including peace, death, sleep, and sedation. I often weave floral and decorative patterns into my art to draw the viewer in and make challenging concepts more digestible. However, decorative appeal can be used as a tool to sedate people and keep them distracted from more important social issues. Whether in entertainment, alcohol and drugs, or conspicuous consumption, I think sedation is a major cause of social and political complacency and ignorance. These Sedation In Bloom prints serve the dual purpose of a decorative escape and a reminder to stay awake and aware! -Shepard Print Details: Sedation In Bloom. 18 x 24 inches. Screenprint on thick cream Speckletone paper. Signed by Shepard Fairey. Numbered edition of 150. Limited quantities of the FULL set (all eight prints) will be sold at a discounted price of $320. $45 for a single print. Available on Thursday, December 16th @ 10 AM PDT at https://store.obeygiant.com. Max order: 1 per customer/household. International customers are responsible for import fees due upon delivery. 35 & Counting
35 & Counting: Gordon Cheung
In early February we launched ’35 & Counting’, an exhibition and online auction, marking 35 years of supporting emerging artists.
All proceeds of the online auction, launching on Thursday 16 February (5pm), will support our artist residency programme.
To showcase the 29 artworks generously donated, we have asked each of the artists to remind us about their involvement with the gallery and what a residency means to them.
Gordon Cheung
Gordon Cheung’s multi-media art captures the hallucinations between the virtual and actual realities of a globalised world oscillating between Utopia and Dystopia. Spray paint, oil, acrylic, pastels, stock listings and ink collide in his works to form epic techno-sublime vistas.
The artist graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2001, exhibits internationally and his works are in many international collections including the Hirshhorn Museum, Whitworth Museum, ASU Art Museum, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Knoxville Art Museum, Hiscox Collection, Progressive Arts Collection, UBS Collection and the Gottesman Collection.
He is represented by Alan Cristea Gallery, London, UK
His solo ‘The 1000 Yard Stare’ took place at Aspex in 2007.
What does a studio/place to work mean to you?
It means I am able to make my art. It is the place I most love to work.
How have funded residencies supported your professional development, and what impact have they had on your work?
Funded residencies have been lifelines to my career as an artist. They have provided valuable time and resources to developing and producing art due to the inspiring environment and contact with those running it. Without residencies I doubt I would have been able to sustain being a full-time artist. Crucial opportunities and new plateaus of creativity were achieved as a result of completing residencies and the network through which I became part of meant that other curators, critics and collectors are people I have maintained contact with.

Gordon Cheung does Chicago
London based @gordoncheung exhibited at the Edel Assanti booth at EXPO CHICAGO this September.
Here he is in front of one of his paintings that was exhibited at the booth. Though usually not required for the artist to attend the art fairs, it was nice to have Gordon visit us in Chicago.
The week started with a visit to NADA’s Chicago Invitational at the Chicago Athletic Association. After touring the fair/hotel, we found ourselves in the Cherry Circle Room for a lovely midday meal with friends, Dee and Giana Kerrinson.
It was so cool watching people get excited about his works and seeing them mesmerized by the paintings. Gordon is also very good at explaining his artwork to his fans.
Above is one of his smaller works that magically appeared in the booth and disappeared just as quickly.
On Saturday Sept 21, we hosted an artist talk for Gordon at the Chinatown Public Library in Chicago. Video coming soon...
After the talk, Edel Assanti and IS Creative Agency hosted a Chinese banquet for our collectors, collaborators and friends. 😋
Michael Zhou of Zhou B Art Center couldn’t let Gordon leave Chicago without some real Mexican food from Martinez Market. While scarfing down some tacos, we ran into Teresa Mah, our Illinois State Representative.
Overall, it was a fantastic and productive time having Gordon visit us in Chicago. We hope he comes back soon!
