Let's Build a Gundam! Tips for Getting Started
Tumblr media
Forty years ago, in April 1979, Mobile Suti Gundam first aired on TV. That means that April 2019 is the Gundam franchise’s 40th anniversary!
To commemorate the occasion, there’s no time like the present to get started building Gunpla, the plastic models you can build into accurate miniature replicas of Gundam mobile suits. In “Let’s Build A Gundam!” panelist Colin Becker shared a few tips to get you started:
Know the difference between grade and scale
Gunpla kits are labeled by grade and scale. The grade indicates the complexity and usually appears like two letters. HG, for example, means “high grade” and indicates a generally simple level of complexity. More advanced builders may pursue MG, AKA Master Grade, or others.
On the other hand, scale simply refers to the size of the finished model kit in comparison to its “real life” size. If a Gunpla says it is a 1/144 scale, that means it is 144th the size that the actual Gundam mobile suit would be if it existed in real life.
Pick a Gunpla that fits your level of experience
You’ll have the most fun if you use the grade and scale guidelines to choose a model kit according to your skill level and interest. Don’t pick an extremely complex Master Grade for your first kit—it’ll take forever and be frustratingly difficult. Instead, you might want to select a small simple SD (Super Deformed) Gunpla that takes just 30 minutes to build.
You don’t need a lot of tools
No toolkit? No problem. All you really need is a pair of nippers. They don’t need to be official Bandai nippers or even hobby nippers, but can be miniature wire cutters from a hardware store or jewelry nippers from a craft store. Use the nippers to snip the Gunpla pieces out of the sprue they come out of the box in, and use your hands to snap the pieces together from there.
Advanced techniques can elevate your Gunpla
When it comes to Gunpla building, the sky’s the limit! You can repaint every part of a Gunpla with spraypaint or even an airbrush to create a custom color scheme. You can even mix and match parts from two suits of the same grade to make a unique hybrid suit. Some modelers even create elaborate diorama settings in which to pose their finished Gunpla.
But remember, there’s no wrong way to build a Gunpla!
Even though the Gunpla Builders World Cup shows a lot of creative ways to build kits, you don’t have to do anything elaborate if you don’t want to. You can just build Gunpla out of the box with no additional tweaks, pose them and enjoy. Gunpla is for everyone and you don’t need to have a minimum level of skill or experience in order to enjoy the hobby.
This weekend, why not pick up a Gunpla kit in the dealer’s room?

I see you post a lot about Gundam. I don’t know much about the series other than there are big robots (mostly because my ex girlfriend used to build them). Your posts have gotten me interested in watching it and I was wondering where to find it and if there were multiple series/where the best place to start is. I know I could google it, but your enthusiasm for the show made me want to ask you for your opinion.
Tbh you can start anywhere!!!
I haven’t been able to watch the og series in AGES (the first time I watched some of it, it was over 10 years ago in like 144hp quality in my school’s computers). But if you really REALLY want to start with the series that started it all, you can watch the Mobile Suit Gundam The Origin OVAs which are coming out slowly and explain like the original story in chronological order (and it’s BEAUTIFULLY animated), or read the manga that should. be. somewhere *gestures vaguely towards the internet*
All the UC stuff (UC=Universal Century which is like the timeline in which the og series happens) is super interesting and has a shit ton of content that you’ll love if you can find where to watch it. But It’s like. Weird if you don’t know the context I think? I’m sorry I can’t direct you to reliable sites to watch this stuff, I myself have had to risk getting into shady places to be able to watch Gundam stuff.
Crunchyroll has many non UC series including Gundam Wing, Gundam 00 (my current fav), Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans and Gundam Seed (I bet it has more series availible wherever you are but because this is Costa Rica we get the scraps aye lmao). Each one happens in its own timeline and has its own characters, but it’s fun because it has recurring themes and references to the older series. So again-you can start wherever you want if you’re looking into non UC series I think.
There’s more lighthearted series like Gundam Build Fighters that are also on crunchyroll that I haven’t gotten into because I like suffering.
PERSONALLY I’d say start with Gundam Wing or Gundam 00. Gundam Wing is fun and action packed but you don’t have to take it that seriously because sometimes its very 90s, super Extra, like a telenovela with robots going by the rule of cool. Now if you’re looking to live the true Gundam experience and have your heart ripped out and stomped on repeatedly, go for Gundam 00 (2018 is the 10th aniversary of 00 and they also announced a lot of new stuff related to it!).
OH oh oh before I forget there’s this chanel called gundaminfo on youtube that uploads the series legally and for free to watch with subs!!! I think they have 00 and IBO and Build Fighters in there complete. Of course I can’t see it in my fucking country but if you’re not from Costa Rica you shouldn’t have any trouble with it, because fuck Costa Rica specifically amirite?
And if gunpla is your think the Gunpla Builders World Cup is happening soon and you can check out pics of the builds and dioramas and it’s jus treally cool.
UHHHHH anyway I hope this helps somehow. I’m sorry if I wasn’t too articulate I gotta turn in final projects for a final revision on friday and I am pretty burned out so I’m not making a lot of sense.
Happy Gundam watching, hope yo ucan enjoy it as much as I do!!!

Plans Launched for Gunpla 40th Anniversary Celebrations
Hot on the heels of Mobile Suit Gundam's 40th anniversary, the world of Gunpla is preparing to celebrate its 40th—with the theme of "Links."
Gunpla, or Gundam plastic models, were an inherent part of the franchise's long-lasting success. While the original Gundam series wasn't popular during its own time, Bandai bolstered the show's popularity with plastic model kits starting in 1980. Costing 300 yen and requiring paint and glue to complete, these first Gunpla created a new fan base for the series and resurrected it into the long-lasting hit we know it as today.
The anniversary project will build outward from its keyword of "Links" into five separate categories. Link the Future deals with, of course, the future of Gunpla—starting with projects that have been in the works for some time. A "Gundarium alloy" RX-78-2 kit will go on sale in July:
    Along with a self-transforming RX-0 Unicorn Gundam:
And—true to the project's theme of links—the Perfect Grade Unleashed RX-78-2. The new kit will link together all previous Gunpla Evolution concepts: Action, Transformation, Lights Emitting, Fine Build, and Extreme Detail.
The second prong, Link Fun, will feature collaboration with hobby shops around Japan to bring together family, friends, and fellow hobbyists for local events.
Link Town will go bigger: Fukuoka will host this summer's GUNDAM SCRAMBLE. Plus, Tokyo's Gundam Base is warming up to host this year's Gunpla Builders World Cup, and cities across Japan will be taking part in a campaign featuring specially designed decorative manhole covers:
Link Creators brings with it new videos and animation—including a Gunpla documentary and the second season of Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE. Plus, there are plans for Gundam Build Divers Series -Battlogue-, featuring fan requested Gunpla battles.
Finally, with Link Other Fields, Gunpla will team up with other projects and companies to create new merchandise for fans. UNIQLO will once again run custom Gunpla and apparel:
And Japan's J1 Football League will also be offering custom figures:
More information on the 40th anniversary project, including new locations for events, will be available as the year goes on.
