One of my niche interests is to render Chinese lyrics into English, but specifically in a way that can be sung to the same tune. So, ah, pseudo-translation driven by a sing-along agenda, I guess? Musical localization? Linguistic filk? If someone knows the real term for this, please tell me so that I can stop staring blankly at people when they ask what my hobbies are

Anyway, 《无谅》 is very pretty—

Maybe I should backtrack. What is 《无谅》 (wú liàng - without forgiveness)? Well, it is the theme song of the 2020 Chinese short film 《无量》 (wú liàng - boundless). I encourage anyone interested in wuxia to give it a try. You can find an excellent translation here, courtesy of @pumpkinpaix

Anyway, 《无谅》 is very pretty, and my brain has been gently flirting with it for months. The result of this slow-burn courtship is shared below, for anyone interested in obscure cross-language karaoke

We all do a little worshipping of historic brands, don't we? Maybe it's a beloved childhood toy company, a kind of candy you can't stop eating, or simply a type of hammer that isn't shit. Every single human being on earth identifies more strongly with one or more brands, than they do the other person in traffic.

Nowhere is this brand obsession more apparent than with cars. For my sins, I was raised in a "Ford family," where the idea of aligning with other products was altogether forbidden. Sure, my parents flirted with the occasional Chevy or Chryco product, but any failure on those cars, no matter how small, was a condemnation of the whole brand. Plymouth Voyager have a teeny-tiny electrical fire? Must be those lazy Mopar workers again, stealing bread right out of the mouth of FoMoCo employees. I knew I should have bought an Aerostar.

Even if you weren't firmly in the camp of a car when you bought it, the idea of having your purchase decision challenged will force you to adhere to the norms of the in-group. For instance, I once owned a half-dozen mouldering Subarus, and my attorney would like me to not finish this sentence with a comment on how I was implicated in the violent gang-swarming of a Mitsubishi Evo owner. In my defence, he was trying to buy the last flame-tipped titanium Tomei muffler.

Like in European royalty, though, brand loyalty gets real weird when you start mixing it up. My own Volare is putatively a Plymouth, sure, but virtually no part of it is original. There's no room for ideology when you have to get to work in the morning. All this desperate tinkering has installed things like Ford axles, Nissan electrical parts, and Cuban tractor engines running entirely off of waste vegetable oil and nitromethane that I occasionally spit directly into the intake.

And that's just the parts I can pronounce: Daddy AliExpress has stuffed my shitbox with hundreds of other components that I would need a Chinese-to-English dictionary and several hours on Wikipedia in order to approach a brand rivalry for. That doesn't mean you're off the hook, Changxi Heavy Industrial. I will remember your betrayal of Jinan PLK Self-Propelled Lift Corporation until my dying day.

We've talked bout the 10 Suns a lot recently, so how about we give their sisters a bit of love?

Did you not know they had sisters? Well they did. Half sisters, technically, but still related. See, the father of the 10 suns had two wives: Xihe, who gave birth to his suns/sons, and Changxi, who gave birth to 12 daughters. I've seen some sources claiming that their mother was Heng O, but considering the fact that she's often portrayed as the wife of Shen I who KILLED 9 of the 10 suns, I'm going to assume it was just local folklores getting their lunar dieties confused. Not that surprising, considering how large China is.

Anyway, while their brothers represented the 10 days of the Chinese week, the girls represented the 12 months of the year, because apparently just working the night shift wasn't enough, they also had to work 30 times longer than the boys did. And THEY never caused problems or complained about it, BOYS. THEY never caused any near apocalypses because they were completely fine with WAITING THEIR TURN. BOYS.

Eh, what am I even nagging for, 9 of them are dead anyways.

Moving on, the girls had a similar routine to their brothers, with their mother picking them up at the beginning of each night and taking them across the sky. Though, they do get special mommy-daughter bath time as a bonus.

Focusing a bit more on their parents, Changxi is described as an important early goddess that kinda got pushed aside as more popular lunar dieties like Heng O and Chang'e came around. If we get out our creative licenses again and connect this to my theoretical timeline of emperors from yesterday, this could be around the time Dijun stopped being king of the cosmos. Perhaps he felt the need to take responsibility for his sons' actions and stepped down, lowering both his wives in status as well?

Anyway, this puts the lunar population up to 15, 16 if you count the rabbit, so Chang'e isn't exactly as alone as she says she is, is she?
