Ellooo! Been a while huh? Well, I live.
Who wants some more Nuwa? Just kidding, you have no power here. I want to talk about Nuwa some more, so that's what we're doing.
Have I ever mentioned that Nuwa is half snake? Because she is. She and her husband/twin brother (ew) Fuxi are often depicted with snake tails instead of legs in early art. That's because many of China's oldest gods are some mix of humans and animals (sometimes without the human). It's only in later interpretations that the gods are more often shown as fully human. This likely has to do with China's evolving ideology coupled with its adoption of Buddhism. See, in the simplest terms, humanity is seen as the highest and most desirable of the 6 realms of Buddhist reincarnation. This coupled with the Chinese idea of cultivation that through various forms of training and meditation one can reach enlightenment. It's through this method that humans become immortals, as well as how animals become demons and gain human form. With that mindset in mind, it doesn't really make sense for gods, who have presumably reached the highest form of enlightenment, to be part animal. Thus, more animalistic gods became less popular and dieties that had previously been animal-human hybrids had their animal traits taken away.
But I digress, as the myth I wanted to talk about today was Nuwa creating humanity.
Nuwa was strolling along (or rather, slithering, because snake body) in the world back when it was brand new and stopped for a bit on the banks of the Yellow River. Feeling bored, I guess, she decides to take some of the wet clay and makesomething with it. She makes the top half resemble herself, but can't get the darn thing to balance on a snake tail. Seems pretty easy to me, but Nuwa was a creator goddess not an art major so I'll look past it. She solves the problem by splitting the snake tail in 2 (and making it shorter, pesumably) and turning it into a pair of legs. Delighted with her arts and crafts project, she puts it on the ground and it comes alive. This is, naturally, the first human. Then she decided to make about a million more, so the first one doesn't get lonely. Eventually she gets the burnout all artists feel from doing the same thing over and over and just starts throwing mud at the ground and letting people spring up from that. The people she sculpted with care became the nobles and other such 'high borns,' while the mud drop people became the peasants and farmers.
And that's why classism is okay!

Tumblr media
And of course there's no way for you to know this!!! The only way you would is if you stalked this six-year-old boy, and that would be a crime!!!!

No, I'm not making excuses to talk about these figures more, because I DONT NEED THEM. I don't need this cute little chonker or his doodle-bopper, this post is for academic purposes! You see, Hundun isn't just a cute little nugget, he's also a primordial creation deity.
Hundun is often seen seen as a being of primal chaos from which the rest of the universe was created. As I stated previously, 2 gods (named Shu and Hu) felt bad for him and tried to carve him a new face. Shockingly, this had rather painful results and killed our little chonker. The universe supposedly came to be from his corpse, similar to the world egg. This could lead to the interpretation that Hundun is the world egg and that Shu and Hu trying to give him a face is what caused it to crack.
Whatever the case, he doesn't seem to have stayed dead as he's often reported to be among the creatures that live on the myhtical Mt Kunlun. He runs up and headbutts good people (like a cat), and leans on bad people (also like a cat). Basically baby boi is a six-legged, four-winged, headless, tailless chubby cat.
I also said that he was part of a set of creatures along with Taotie that mirror the 4 Guardian Beasts, so let's talk about those guys while we're at it. Together they're called the Sixiong, meaning 4 Fiends or 4 Evils. As far as I can tell they don't directly correlate with specific guardians (i.e. Suzaku, Byakko, Genbu, and Seiryuu), it's more that the group as a whole mirrors the Sixiang.
Tumblr media
First up, Taotie. This guy, as previously mentioned, likes to eat so much he just full on ate himself. Yikes. He's described as looking like an ox with human hands and horns coming out of its back like a hedgehog.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, the next 2 don't have adorable minis, so we'll have to make do.
Something between a tiger and a dog with boar tusks and a human face, Taowu is one freaky looking peice of work, just like his friends. He's extremely stubborn and aggressive, willing to pick a fight with anything he comes across. Luckily, he's also very susceptible to reverse psychology as asking him to eat you will make him refuse out of spite.
Last but not least we have Qiongqi, who is supposedly descended from the Yellow Emperor. He's a huge tiger with wings and horns out the everywhere. It hates righteousness, so if it hears two people arguing it'll bite the head off the one who's right and the noses off everyone who agrees. Then he sidles up to the asshole and starts brining them his kills like a house cat. A massive, horned, man-eating house cat.
One thing I noticed is that while the Sixiong are all really monster-y, the Sixiang are a lot more normal in comparison. Suzaku is a big bird and Byakko is a big tiger. Even Seiryuu, the dragon, is part of a recognizable species. The only member who doesn't always follow this rule is Genbu, what with him being part turtle part snake, but even he is a lot less mixed up than any of the members of the 4 Fiends. It should also be noted that he just gets depicted as a big turtle a lot of the time anyways. An interesting point of contrast, I think.

MK: Like what? I know I showered this week.... *sniffs armpits*
SWK: You haven't eaten anything..... wierd recently, have you?
MK: No, not really. OH! Except for those cursed meatballs. They were SO good, but the hiccups were awful.
SWK: *does mental math, panics, throws MK over his shoulder and drags his butt over to Kuan Yin* I THINK WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!!!
Disturbing thought after reading the Spider Sisters arc of JTTW:
CW for discussions of cannibalism;
So in the book; after the Seven Spider Sisters invite Tripitaka in for some food, they try to trick him into eating human flesh as a cruel prank as they're seducing him. Not only as an insult, but as a tactic - humans who consume (willingly or not) fellow sentient beings get a massive hit to their positive Karma. Like, straight back to Hungry Ghost level. As a monk, if Tripitaka hadn't been wary (for once) of the meal offered to him, he would have not been able to enter the Buddha's domain at all.
Only in times of extreme famine is such consumption excused in the Buddha's eye. One major reason being that eating human flesh was like the super-extreme of desiring meat, and that it caused an addicition in the consumer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not just a cruel joke common to demons, it a calculated move to permanently lower their victim's Karma - likely transforming them into a fellow demon within the next life.
SO
In one of my fave episodes "To Catch A Leaf"; MK gets earthquake-causing hiccups from "cursed meatballs" he ate at a eating competition. His seller is clearly meant to be a demon/spirit who targeted him specifically - likely recognising him as the demon-fighting Monkey Kid.
Tumblr media
MK: "Oh man I so could go for more of those [meatballs] right now!"
Even the creators must have realised an issue here, as the transcript for the episode changes it to "beef balls" instead (angry mooing from DBK and Red Son).
And considering that the Spider Sisters were skillful cooks enough to make human flesh appear like gluten and tofu?
I wouldn't be surprised if the cook who targetted MK slipped something non-kosher into those meatballs.
Or maybe just pork cus his dad's a pig.
Then again it could have been another reason why Sandy decided that he had to get MK to consume a super-rare buddhist flower immediately.
Fun fact; entities who have consumed human flesh in JTTW are said to have a weird stank about them, esp in their breath. SKW notably *does not* have this stank about him (both Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing do, both being eaters of humans prior to joining Tripitaka) but he's able to recognise it in other demons. Kinda like how people who eat a lot of cheese can smell like cheese.
SWK, meets up with the gang after S2: "...MK. Why do you smell like that?"

So I was like, halfway through writing my own post about the 10 Kings when I found this post from a nerd after my own heart, which is objectively better and more informative, so instead of just doing This but Worse or This but Plagarized, I'm just gonna reblog it.
The Ten Kings of Hell: a history
Tumblr media
The main judge of the dead in many schools of Buddhism, known as Enma Daiō in Japan and Yanluo Wang in China is a well known figure, in no small part thanks to numerous popculture adaptations. However, the exact history behind Yama, a Hindu deity, transforming into a Chinese bureaucrat, as well as the identities of Enma’s subordinate kings of hell and lesser courtiers are relatively obscure. Under the cut I will discuss the development of the idea of ten kings of hell, the history of Enma himself (and why in theory you could say there’s two of him), as well as a number of associated figures. Read on if you want to find out which mythical figure the historical Buddha was purportedly disappointed with, how popular imagination turned a completely mundane government official into Yanluo’s human guise centuries after his death, and much more.
