Alhaitham who is a student at the akademiya, has exams coming up, and cannot remember where he left his keys or when he last ate so he has to make note of it somewhere every now and again. Him trying to keep a schedule over time so he doesn’t forget to take care of himself while he’s thinking of correlations and causations and the next paper he has to write. Just Alhaitham living alone without his grandma for the first time and realizing that no one else will look out for him (not necessarily in a self pitying way), so he has to build a routine schedule for himself to live a good life.

what is probably the first in a series of vignettes of older!lonashipping in Galar because self control? don’t know her :)
featuring appearances from Magnolia, Sonia, and Leon! no spoilers for SwSh
Gladion knows that Moon is relatively good friends with Galar’s Champion.
It doesn’t make it any less strange to see in person.
They decide to start their vacation in Wedgehurst, because Gladion is fascinated by the Dynamax research Professor Magnolia has done (and it’ll be his only work-related activity, he swears), and Moon is just excited to see Leon before he goes off to prepare for the battle season. Even a few days before the opening ceremony, he only has time to visit for tea on their third and final afternoon in Wedgehurst.
As Magnolia goes over her sensor’s most recent readings at various power spots, Gladion listening intently and making a few notes on his tablet, Moon sets up tea in the kitchen, brewing a pot and laying out the snacks that Sonia bought that morning. She has a small smile on her face as she hums a rhythmless tune, excitement radiating off her to the point that Gladion pauses, watching her for a minute with his own smile tugging up a corner of his lips.
“–and I’d go on but you’re a wee bit distracted.”
Gladion flinches, turning to see Professor Magnolia giving him a smirk, and he tries not to wilt sheepishly at being caught. “Sorry about that.”
“No need to apologize,” she says, waving off the very notion with a hand before she continues with a pleased hum, “It’s lovely to see. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you two were married.”
He pales, fumbling with the tablet in his hands as he tries not to drop it, clearing his throat. Magnolia’s eyes widen a fraction, and she’s quick to give his arm a pat as she shakes her head. “I don’t mean anything by it, dear. You two are still young, no need to worry yourselves over things like that.”
Too late, Gladion thinks to himself, because he knows that tucked away in his suitcase, buried under a pile of folded shirts, is a velvet ring box that he’s had for months now; he bought it the same day that Moon first brought up that she was thinking about marriage. They’ve since both agreed that they’d like to get married, and Gladion knows this, and he thinks about it constantly, and yet every time he thinks he’ll propose, he psyches himself out. He packed the ring for no real reason, considering he hasn’t exactly planned anything for a proposal during their trip, but even just a week in it has him on high alert, suddenly itching to drop to one knee despite the Butterfree still in his belly.
With a firmer grip on his tablet, and avoiding the professor’s eyes, he mumbles, “We’ve, uh, actually been talking about it. No set plans, though.”
“Well then I expect a wedding invite in the future – consider it payment for our little lessons.”
He chuckles, a faint blush on his cheeks as they go back to the readings, though it’s considerably harder for him to focus now with things like weddings, proposals, and Moon knocking around in his head.
It’s probably for the best, then, that they’re interrupted just a few minutes later by the door opening, Sonia’s Yamper yipping as he runs in, Sonia herself following behind as she declares, “Delivery for my favorite Champion.”
Leon’s figure fills the doorway, and Gladion realizes that while Moon has been around him at conferences, he’s never actually seen the Galar Champion in person. He cuts an intimidating figure, broad shoulders made all the broader by the fur on his cape, and the flame of the large Charizard still in the yard gives him a bit of a halo.
For a brief second, Gladion is impressed.
But then Leon’s face pulls into a pout, and his voice is pitched and petulant as he whines, “Aww, but Sonia...”
The young woman in question rolls her eyes, but she’s smiling all the same. “You’re a close second, if it’s any consolation.”
“You’re my second favorite Champion, too.”
Moon smirks at the two by the door, arms crossed. Leon’s grin grows as he throws open his arms, laughing, “C’mere you bully!”
She does, throwing her arms around him in a hug as the two mention how long it’s been since they’ve last spoken, how they’ve missed each other, and Gladion has to keep from snorting at the sight. Moon is 5’2” on a good day, and Leon’s got a solid foot on her, engulfing her in their hug.
Sonia goes to pull up another chair to the kitchen table, Magnolia walking over to take a seat as Gladion sets down his tablet and heads towards the pair. His footsteps draw Leon’s attention, who smiles at him as he extends a hand. “Gladion, right?”
He nods, shaking Leon’s hand as Moon steps to his side. “Nice to finally meet you.”
“Same here – you're a proper legend at Battle Royals.”
Gladion blinks, more than a little surprised that the Galar Champion has even heard of Battle Royals, much less actually seen a match. Alola doesn’t broadcast them internationally, but when he looks to Moon to share his confusion, she’s instead sheepish.
“I may have forced him to watch all the matches I had recorded on my phone.”
“It was a lot,” Leon adds somberly, eyes lost in a memory before he blinks out of it, a fire in his eyes as he smirks. “She also tells me all about what you do at Aether, but if I’m being honest mate, I can’t make heads or tails of it. Sounds impressive, though.”
Moon laughs, and when Gladion looks down at her, she gives him a shrug and smile. “I brag about you a lot at those conferences, but it’s your fault for making it easy.”
And the way she says it, so simple and earnest and warm...Arceus, should he just go get the ring from his luggage right now?
Leon snaps him out of his thoughts, though, clenching a fist as his eyes ignite. “We have to organize a Battle Royal; I’ve been thinking up some strategies and–”
Magnolia clears her throat, drawing the trio’s attention to the table where she sits next to Sonia, who’s watching them with an amused twinkle in her eye and a cookie in her mouth. As the professor finishes pouring herself a cup of tea, pausing in adding a sugar cube to chide, “If you must battle, at least wait until after I’ve had my tea. Now sit before it gets cold.”
Leon deflates, but agrees with a sigh, Moon and Gladion chuckling as they follow behind him, careful not to trip over Sonia’s Yamper as the Pokemon dashes back outside, intent on playing with the Charizard still in the yard. As they fill their plates with cookies and fall into conversation, Gladion takes another moment to watch Moon, this time as she talks with Leon.
It’s a little strange to see her like this – he's so used to her being reserved, and she still is, but she’s also playfully punching Leon in the arm, a little extra dry in her humor. He sips his tea, hiding a smile when he realizes that the “bro energy” she likes to tease Sun and Hau for supposedly having hasn’t totally escaped her, and he now has a front row seat to it.
Next to him, Sonia chews on her cheek as she leans towards him, whispering conspiratorially, “Bit odd, isn’t it?”
“Like watching an unlikely interspecies friendship,” he agrees, and the two share a snicker, drawing the other three’s attention.
Moon hums, her right hand reaching out for his under the table, interlacing their fingers as she smirks. “What’s so funny?”
Gladion gives her a lopsided smile, squeezing her hand under the table. “You are.”
“I’m downright hilarious, but how so this time?”
“You have a funny face.”
“Then why do you enjoy looking at it so often?” Moon grins as he rolls his eyes with a chuckle, but when she opens her mouth to continue, she pauses, seeming to remember they’re very much not alone and glancing at Leon out of the corner of the eye.
Who only smiles, far too confident as he asks, “So how long have you two been married, anyway?”
To which Gladion pales, Moon splutters as she pretends to find her tea incredibly interesting, and Sonia very nearly throws a napkin at the Galar Champion before steering the conversation towards the upcoming battle season.
And so they go on with their tea, Gladion and Moon’s hands remaining linked under the table as they listen to Leon retell his latest battle with Raihan, Sonia interjecting with a few cracks at him as the others laugh. As the last of the day’s sunshine filters in through the windows, a pleasant tranquility settles in the kitchen, one that not even Leon’s gesticulating can pierce.
It’s quite a surprise, then, when Sonia glances over at the clock and realizes over two hours have passed. She looks across the table at Leon, raising a brow as she says, “This has been a lovely little chin-wag, but don’t you have a dinner to get to?”
“Ah, nearly forgot,” he mumbles, his chair scraping against the floor as he stands with wide eyes, “Thanks Sonia.”
Hop and his friends are probably still preoccupied with their starters, but he did promise his mother that he’d be home in time for dinner. Still, he looks a bit crestfallen when he glances back down at Moon and Gladion, feeling like he hasn’t nearly had enough time to catch up with the Alola Champion, and he’s only scratched the surface of the Aether President’s cool exterior.
Sonia stands, mumbling something about having to lead him back or else he’d end up wandering in Slumbering Weald as her grandmother nods. Moon and Gladion follow suit, preparing their goodbyes when an idea smacks Leon across the forehead, his eyes lighting up as he looks around the table. “Say, why don’t you all join us?”
The others pause, Gladion and Moon exchanging a look before she mumbles, trying to contain her excitement, “Are you sure?”
“No doubt my mum’s gonna grill up too much food anyway, and Hop and his mates would lose their minds to meet another Champion and Battle Royal ace.” He nods, giving Magnolia and Sonia a grin as he adds, “You know you’re always welcome, too.”
Magnolia hums, standing and retrieving her cane from where it leans against the table. “Since you asked so politely.”
Sonia smiles, looping an arm around Moon and Gladion as she pokes her head between them, turning to look up at the blond as she chuckles, “What do you say, Gladion? Fancy a chance to take field notes on the interspecies friendship we discovered?”
Moon rolls her eyes, and Gladion laughs softly, shaking his head. “Can’t pass that up.”
“You’re lucky you’re cute,” Moon warns without a hint of acidity, giving their interlocked hands another squeeze as she teases him.
He smirks. “You think I’m cute?”
“Well do you think I am?”
Sonia gags. “You’re both disgustingly sweet, is what you are.” They all share a laugh as she brushes past them, clapping a hand on Leon’s shoulder as the two head out the door, leading the way up the path along with Yamper and Charizard.
As they walk towards Postwick, holding hands, Moon stops him for a moment, leaning up (and with a little help of him leaning down) to place a kiss against his cheek, whispering against his skin, “I think you’re very cute, by the way.”
And it takes every ounce of impulse control within Gladion to keep walking, and not turn around and get that ring out.

goblin!jinyoung;
Tumblr media
for the request for spirit!jinyoung!! i changed it up quite a bit as you can see, so hopefully you like the idea
this is also heavily based off goblin, the kdrama, but it doesn’t follow the same storyline, so much as it just uses its definition of the goblin and life consequences of the goblin
so, the world has all kinds of ideas about what a goblin is
some people see them as these short little demonic monsters that run around stealing people’s money, some see them as handsome middle aged men in trench coats and turtle necks i mean it’s really open for debate at this point
jinyoung… is much closer to the latter
now, there’s a difference between a european goblin and the korean equivalent, dokkaebi
biggest difference: european goblins are rude af and dokkaebi are actually pretty friendly and kind
for centuries upon centuries, dokkaebi have had their stories told, usually as playful spirits that inhabit household objects stained with human blood
some people like them, some people do not
dokkaebi can be innocently childish, but there are certain kinds that bring about misery and mayhem
most korean folklore doesn’t acknowledge the possibility of a dokkaebi taking the form of a human however, bc… it’s never actually been done before??
so it’s pretty freaking weird when jinyoung comes along
now, jinyoung has been alive since the goryeo period
he was the royal advisor to a king, and was pretty well known as one of the smartest people in the kingdom
he knew things that others could only dream of, and he was able to advise the king in such a way that the king of that time was pretty much worshipped as a god
little did many people outside of the palace know, the king was merely following jinyoung’s advice
for a long time, jinyoung was pretty happy with this setup, and since he and the king were best friends since childhood, he never had to want for anything
sometimes the king would be like “yo bro get you a girl you look sad af doing nothing all day”
but “nothing” to the king was everything to jinyoung
jinyoung was an avid reader, and would spend most of his free time out in the gardens drinking tea and reading, or listening to the royal band play, or watching the old maids knit
they’d happily just let him sit in and listen to all the shit-talking cause they trusted jinyoung and knew he wasn’t no snitch lol
he was just extremely peaceful back then, and if you had asked him how he’d feel if he was going to be killed the next day, he’d say he’d be dying the happiest man in all of korea, which was pretty true
but all of that changed when the king got a wife
the king had never met her, had seen her in paintings at most, and just knew she was a princess from somewhere and that they’d be officiating the marriage within a week
the king didn’t seem very excited about getting married, so he came to jinyoung for advice
“jinyoung… what if we don’t get along? or what if she falls for someone else in the kingdom?”
and since the king is still young, jinyoung feels super bad for him and constantly reassures him that no one could possibly be better for the new queen than the king himself, which helped put the king’s worries to rest
that was, until of course, jinyoung met her
jinyoung had went on a short trip through town in search of a birthday present for one of the old maids he was friends with, when he saw a woman in bright clothing run past him, being trailed by a group of guards shoving their way through the crowd
jinyoung throws caution to the wind and catches her, leading her through narrow alleyways and past giggling children in an attempt to lose the guards
and once they finally had, the woman had profusely thanked jinyoung for his help, and, in return, she offered to buy him a meal somewhere the guards wouldn’t find her
now at this, jinyoung was kinda skeptical cause like?? yo i know i just saved your ass out of instinct but you could actually be like a thief or something
and she just laughs and promises that if anything goes wrong, she’d put in a good word with the king
to which jinyoung laughs it off like haha yeah if anyone is gonna explain themselves to the king it’s me
but then she removes her veil and introduces her self, and jinyoung is like….
that’s the queen. she’s supposed to be getting married. to the king. arriving at the palace today
when jinyoung’s eyes widen she nods her head, seeming convinced of something and she’s like “i knew you were noble by your clothes and speech, but i can tell by the look on your face that you’re much closer to the palace then i first assumed. you must know me?”
and jinyoung just nods, kinda dumbstruck that he just helped the future queen escape her guards and fuck he has some explaining to do when he drags her ass back to the palace
he’s about to ask exactly why he just had to save her but she just. plops down on the dirt road, messing up her royal dress and lets her legs fall out like a little kid and she shrugs “i told them i wanted to travel to the palace by foot instead of this big show they’re trying to put on, and they wouldn’t listen so i bolted the first chance i got”
and while she’s looking around, playing with dogs as they pass by or starting up conversations with the young children dancing around in the field nearby, he’s just kind of looking at her
like really looking at her
and she looks so young, younger than the king and he by a few years
and maybe it’s because she just exhibits so much youth and freedom at such a young age
or maybe it’s because he knows that youth will be stolen from her the moment the king puts that ring on her finger
but something in him just vows to preserve it in whatever way he can
which, had ultimately, become his demise
jinyoung, having been close friends with the king since they were children, knew every fatal flaw of the king
from his playfully competitive side to his unclean habits, which makes jinyoung the best advisor because he knows the king inside and out, like the back of his own hand
but one thing he had never bet on fully consuming him was the king’s jealousy
he had seen it when the king was young. jinyoung hadn’t necessarily grown up noble like everyone else, but had befriended the prince despite most protests in the kingdom, and the king had elected to take jinyoung from his parents as to raise him in the safety and comfort of the palace, right beside his son, jinyoung’s inseparable best friend
sometimes the king would dote on jinyoung like a son, and since the prince had never had someone around who was on the same level as he, he had been considerably jealous at times, having to share with jinyoung things he didn’t want to
jinyoung had learned to reserve himself in places the prince would not feel threatened i.e., the library, the gardens, or his own room
jinyoung was to give advice softly, calmly, in a way that wouldn’t make him look like he was backseat ruling
and he had done well!! but something about jinyoung getting close with the future queen had turned all his efforts to naught
what was innocent companionship and friendly teasing had rubbed the king the wrong way, and suddenly the king could no longer see jinyoung as a friend, but as a threat
and even though jinyoung had only the best intentions toward the royal couple, when the king pulled him aside to question his feelings for the queen head-on…. jinyoung couldn’t lie
it had been the product of conversations over tea in the gardens and scholarly musings over the books jinyoung had collected, and it had quickly spiraled into jinyoung growing a fondness for the queen that he could not suppress for long
but he had tried, god did he try
but no matter how quickly he would leave the room when she entered, or how cold he made his demeanor toward her, she never backed down
she would reach out to him again and again, him being the only friend that she had in all the palace
and even though the king’s jealousy had made itself known to her, she wasn’t backing down without a fight
because god help any man who tried to decide her fate for her
in the end, jinyoung had committed an act of treason, and the king made very sure to over-exaggerate the details of how jinyoung felt, and made sure to shame the queen in the process
and, at the time, jinyoung had made it very clear to the queen not to say anything about their friendship that would damn her any more than necessary, as he already knew his fate
but she did not
the queen had been doing as told the entire time, hoping to god the king would just demote jinyoung or something small that wouldn’t hurt him too much
but then the king mentioned that the punishment for treason is death, and she just lost it
she was suddenly throwing herself at the king, enraging him as she made claim after claim about his behavior and she was so obviously trying to egg him on
and jinyoung made the mistake of trying to comfort her, to stop her while she still had a chance to stay out of the king’s line of anger
the moment his hands came in contact with her shoulders, the king sentenced them both to death, a death fitting for two “adulterous” lovers
he tied jinyoung to a pole in the middle of nowhere, dousing him in alcohol while the queen was forced to watch
before the king dropped a lit match at jinyoung’s feet, he ordered a sword be plunged in his wife’s chest, and the heavens practically ripped open at the scream that tore from jinyoung’s throat
the queen’s last moments were of her looking at jinyoung, her eyes losing life quick as blood gushed from her body and she fell at his feet, dead
jinyoung didn’t even have time to mourn before the same sword was being stabbed into his chest
he coughs up blood as the king laughs, mad and angry and all kinds of evil, and he swears to jinyoung that there will never be a life where he can have the queen
jinyoung can barely feel the flames that begin to lick at his body, his mind and heart focused solely on the woman he had grown to love laying nearly lifeless on the ground, gasping in the last bits of air she could get
and jinyoung’s blood trickles down in a pool, but he just manages to say a quick prayer for her soul in hopes that she’d find peace in another life, right as the burning pain envelops him whole
he should have turned to ash then, but once the flames had died out, he was still alive??
the ropes had burned off of him so he was free to stand again, and while he was covered in charred skin, he was able to pull it off like clothing, revealing fresh, untouched skin underneath
he looks around and realizes it’s been a while, as when he had been sentenced to death it had been summer, but now winter was quickly approaching
he could not find the queen either, and he wondered if the king and his men had taken her body back to the palace after she had died
and so jinyoung travels for miles, cold and confused and oh so heartbroken because the woman he had loved so much had been killed because of his foolish feelings
he travels until a mother spots him and brings him in to clothe him, asking him exactly who he was and why he was all alone in the cold
and jinyoung still doesn’t understand why he’s still alive, why he didn’t burn up with the ground and the ropes that had bound him. he only knew that he felt something heavy in his chest, like the weight of the sword he’d been killed with
and while the sword isn’t physically there, it glimmers and stands proud in the middle of his chest, his hands going through it every time he attempts to grab hold of it
he is then told by the divinity of that world that he is to live with the sword in his chest for the rest of his life, until he finds the goblin’s bride who will ultimately remove it and put him at peace, as she and she alone is the only person who can perform this task
so this goes on for centuries, jinyoung living different lives and traveling near and far to start new ones
he started off working at the restaurant of the mother who’d taken him in, and as she watched her children age and grow, she could only wonder why he would not
he saw her off when she died, and then the children too, and people started wondering if he was magic or not, so he had to run
in each life, he lives differently, but each life without a purpose or a home to go back to
he doesn’t really understand why he must continue to live and watch his loved ones die with no bride in sight, he just thinks that maybe the divinity hated him a little more than everyone else
jinyoung wanted to be bitter too, but did he really deserve such luxury? he was, after all, the man that stole his best friend’s wife
even though jinyoung hid it well, the guilt that tore him up inside everyday had started to eat at him like a disease, and all he could wish and hope for was that he’d be released from this life completely by the bride
he ends up moving back to korea after the next group of people he’s grown to love passes on, and the whispers of ghosts near and far talk a lot about the goblin’s bride
while ghosts are afraid of goblins by nature, he manages to corner a few to ask about how much they knew
and it turns out that a lot of people have been seeing a girl around, someone that could speak to spirits and could possibly be the bride
and at this!! jinyoung was ecstatic!! i mean he had been living for so long that he had started to hate the very air he breathed, and now he was that much closer to the person who could save him from this never ending misery
though, the ghosts are usually too afraid to help him in his search for the bride, and he starts to wonder if maybe it was all just rumors to send him on a wild goose chase
until
“when i wished for a boyfriend, i honestly didn’t think it’d come true so fast” you say, sitting in front of a cake, candles freshly blown out
one second, jinyoung was reading in his living room, and the next he’s sitting in a cramped car with you in the driver’s seat, a small cake in your lap no larger than the expanse of jinyoung’s hand, and your eyes blown wide
“i…. what just happened?” jinyoung asks, looking between you, the cake, and his surroundings
at least he’s still in korea lol
“are you another ghost? because if you are, i’m sorry but i’m not helping you play pranks on your friends. last time i almost got beat up in an alley-” “ghost? you see ghosts?”
and you just roll your eyes like “duh!! how else did you just appear in the passenger seat of my car unless you’re a ghost? you must have just recently died, you haven’t gotten the hang of things yet. just stay calm” you reach a hand out to touch jinyoung’s hand as if to comfort him, but when you feel that his skin is warm like yours, you shriek and yank back, looking at him like he’s the crazy one
“y-your hands should be freezing cold” you stutter, looking at him once more and really getting a good look
he’s still in his comfortable plaid pajama pants and a warm cream sweater, even adorning a pair of bunny slippers (they were a gift from a friend okay) and he looks absolutely nothing like a ghost does, because even his skin isn’t pale, and he’s not emitting a cold aura like most do
he feels almost perfectly, unbelievable alive
“i’m not a ghost, i’m a goblin. i must be the first you’ve seen”
“well yeah, but i mean… wait… did you say you’re the goblin?” suddenly you’re dropping your cake into his hands and he’s fumbling to keep the strawberry flavored icing from staining his expensive sweater, his eyes narrowing as you lean into him with a suspicious look
you’re too close for comfort and he presses himself up against the door as much as possible, about to tell you off for being so intrusive before something clicks inside of him
how had you known about ghosts and goblins so casually?
there were always kids who could see through the tricks of ghosts at young ages, and a few elderly as well, but he’d never met a girl your age who could see the supernatural like this
“i am a goblin, yes…. why do you ask 👀”
“i didn’t say a goblin, i said the goblin. as in… my husband, the goblin” you say, your lips twitching into a smile
suddenly he realizes why you’re so happy to see him, and he’s immediately shoving your cake back into your hands with fumbling fingers, pushing himself out of your parked car as he attempts to ignore the looks of those staring at his bunny slippers
he doesn’t even know why he’s running, but the fact that he’s met you so suddenly has him reeling, and he’s sprinting for the nearest door in sight, you trailing off not too far behind
as soon as he reaches the door to a phone booth, he thrusts himself inside, using his magic to transport him back home and through his front door
as soon as he steps on to the wood floors of his home, he lets out a loud sigh of relief and runs a hand through his hair to collect himself
and then something rams right into his back
“whoa, nice digs” you mumble under your breath, looking around the mansion
jinyoung has never screamed so high-pitched before
“you!!! you followed me through a portal!! that’s not possible???” he shouts, pointing at you with an accusing finger
“you might have an advantage with those long legs of yours, but you’re forgetting i’m the goblin’s bride. i can follow you anywhere” you giggle, tucking your hands behind your back as you sway from side to side
suddenly you’re bounding off across his house, poking and prodding at everything in sight with a childish gleam and he’s just like…. what in the h e l l
“you can’t honestly be the bride” jinyoung huffs, watching as you shoot him an offended look
“then how did i call you? only a goblin’s bride can do that”
“how did you call me? i’m still lost on that” jinyoung asks
“i don’t really know. i just remember lighting the candles on my birthday cake and wishing for something before blowing them out. then you appeared”
and even though that’s not really the most important thing happening at the moment, he still can’t help himself from whispering a tentative “happy birthday” under his breath, of that which you grin at
“well, what did you wish for?” he asks, wondering if maybe you had thought of him specifically
“money” you say nonchalantly, and his eyes narrow at you all the more, “and… a purpose. in life. i guess you must be my purpose after all, i was starting to think you’d never show”
and even as you look at him like he’s the answer to all your problems, like you’ve found a gold rush in his eyes, all he can think of is how you feel so familiar
carefully, he approaches you and you watch him with curious eyes, unable to hide the bubbling excitement in your chest at finally finding the reason for your being
and then he’s grabbing your arm and pulling you toward the front door and back where he’d found you, right outside the phone booth
“if you’re really the bride, call me again” and then he’s heading through the door again, making sure to shut it behind him this time so you don’t follow
he waits, and he waits, and he waits, but minutes turn into hours and it seems you can’t call him at all, so he decides that it had been some freak blip in the structure of the universe and you, in fact, weren’t his bride
he settles back into reading again, or at least tries to, but his mind is just overflowing with thoughts of you and why he found you so familiar
and no matter how hard he tries to get you out of his head, he can’t help wondering why he’d appeared to you like that if you weren’t the goblin’s bride
it’s just when he’s fresh out of the shower, a towel wrapped around his torso, that he starts noticing smoke is rising from his skin in a peculiar way
and then suddenly he’s freezing and naked and standing in the middle of a park, nothing but a towel to cover his body
and you’re there on a nearby bench, a burned out match in hand as your eyes slowly open to take him in
“should i have called another time?
he swears you had psychic abilities and called him when he was half naked on purpose
from that moment on, it’s pretty obvious that you are the bride, but for some reason jinyoung just. doesn’t want to accept it. nope. yeah he’s been searching this whole time for the bride so he can finally die but like. nope. not today
because you’re definitely Not what he was expecting when he was told of a bride
you know?? he was expecting like some ghostly lady in white to ascend from the heavens and yank out the sword or something but instead it’s this girl in her twenties who really likes twice and monsta x and can’t tell the difference between a normal fork and a salad fork
you’re so full of life and excitement and childlike wonder and he’s just. not like that lol
where you’re springtime, he’s winter’s freeze
where you’re sprinting in crowds, he’s quiet time to himself
and he can never shake the feeling that maybe god was wrong making you his bride? like why would he make jinyoung suffer all of this time just to put something like this on an innocent person?
you were far too warm and carefree to have to deal with taking the life of a powerful immortal. you should have been out, making friends and living life like other people your age
but it wasn’t like you had much of a choice to
from a young age, you had been shunned for your ability to talk to spirits among the dead, and you had never felt like you should lie about it either, which resulted in your isolation from the general public
you had lost your parents at a young age and were subjected to live with your cruel aunt and her brats of children, and your friends were few and far in between. and when they were there, they were usually ghosts
your life had been a constant replay of desperation, emptiness, and loneliness since you’d been born, and the only thing that had given you any hope for life was that you were mean to be part of something greater
you didn’t know the logistics of your role as the goblin’s bride, only that you were the key to what he’d been missing for the last thousand years
and jinyoung wouldn’t really tell you either, much to your annoyance
the most he’d said was that you’d put him at peace?? whatever that meant
you wondered how exactly it would work if you continued to age and he did not, but nevertheless, you decide not to ask about the sword sticking out from between his chest
jinyoung had explained to you that he had such a big house and endless bouts of money thanks to the divinity, so he could travel wherever whenever he needed to and he could afford to live his immortality comfortably
your aunt was more than happy to get you off her hands, and hadn’t cared at all where you ended up, which led to her dumping you on the street when bills started getting harder and harder to pay
but jinyoung had been there when you called (or rather, blew out a flame), and when he had heard of what your aunt had done, he had promptly helped you pack your things before setting off the sprinklers in your house, flooding nearly every “hard-earned” thing your aunt had and forcing her out onto the street for the night while jinyoung took you back to his home
from then on, he had somewhat assumed responsibility over you, being as kind as to transport you to and from work even though you promised you could take the bus instead, or offering that you quit your job altogether since he had money all around
you’d always smile and laugh it off with “i like having my own money, thank you very much”
even though he acts like he doesn’t care if you’re there or not, he’ll find himself lounging around like a lost puppy, waiting for you to come home
or he’ll send you texts throughout the day (you had to actually teach him how to use a phone bc he didn’t feel the need to have one before. i mean, when you can transport anywhere, what’s the point of paying a cell phone bill??) bc he can’t do anything by himself anymore apparently
hubby <3: Can you come home early.
you: why?? what’s wrong? do you need something?
hubby <3: My phone keeps saying I don’t have enough storage and I don’t know how to fix it.
you: delete some of those games off your phone!!! you have way too many lol
hubby <3: Are you insane, woman.
ghosts tend to avoid you when you’re out with him, which is a nice change bc there’s a few that like to follow you around asking about the goblin when he’s not there
but there is one in particular that goes by the name of jackson
like you’ve met angry ghosts, sad ghosts, and quiet ghosts, but you’d never met a ghost as talkative and happy as jackson
the guy is so happy to talk to someone alive that he barely ever leaves you alone
he’s even had the guts to try and show himself around you when jinyoung is there and jinyoung is always like *glare* but jackson doesn’t really mind, always sticking to your side and asking about your day
and he actually proves to be pretty helpful with like warding off other ghosts that tend to bother you so he’s not all that bad really
jinyoung gets a lil jealous when you talk to jackson more than you talk to him but it’s also??? his fault??? bc when you two are together you do most of the talking anyway?
jackson’s like “how is it that she has more fun talking to a dead person than her immortal husband?” and he gets so embarrassed and red in the face that he has to go drink his calming tea to keep from challenging jackson to a sword fight in the driveway
but jackson isn’t all bad, and jinyoung feels a little better when you go out for long periods of time knowing jackson will most likely be stuck by your side and would let jinyoung know if something bad happened to you
because what comes with being a goblin’s bride is power over the goblin
any ghost could use you as bait to trick the goblin into doing something for them, which could ultimately alter so many other lives in the process and it’s super dangerous
but god help anyone who dared lay a hand on you
like he’d smite them and be like “you tried it lmao”
and you’d think it’d be awkward living in such a big house with jinyoung all by yourselves but in fact, it’s actually pretty fun
you’ll just be admiring yourself in a mirror and he’ll be like “that’s from the joseon dynasty”
or you’ll be making tea and he’ll be like “that teapot was a gift from the queen of england”
“i teleported that dresser out of a scottish castle when i went on a sight-seeing trip once”
“everyone thinks the mona lisa getting stolen was bc of that italian dude, but really i paid him to give it to me for my villa at the time” “then why did you give it back to him?” “didn’t match the interior design”
you actually have no real proof that any of the things he says are true or not but it’s pretty entertaining to hear nonetheless
and he won’t admit it to your face but he secretly adores the way your eyes light up with wonder at his stories of the lives he’s lived
and he admires the cute way your smile gets too big and your nose wrinkles when you laugh at something particularly silly that he says
when he loosens up, it’s so easy to talk to him that it really does feel like you were meant to be together after all
with the time you two spend together, there comes a love that starts budding at the surfaces of your hearts, even though one of you is a lil more reluctant to admit than the other *cough* jinyoung *cough*
but with that comes curiosity
“do you believe in reincarnation?” you ask him one day, sprawled out on his living room couch
even though your feet are up on the arm rest like he’s told you hundreds of times not to do, he doesn’t mention it this time, too immersed in his book to care. up until you asked that question at least
“why do you ask?” he hums, glancing at you over the pages of his book
“…i don’t know, you’ve lived for hundreds of years. have you ever seen the same soul in a different person before?”
the question has him shocked into silence, his mind fighting for an acceptable answer
all he can really do is look at you, with your curious eyes and your pout
your question is so innocent that he can’t possibly hold it against you if it triggers something in him
but for a moment, just a moment short enough that he might’ve missed it, he sees those same curious eyes adorned by painted lips in a laughing smile, roses and lilies decorating the scenery behind you, a familiar sage colored hair clip nestled in your high bun
he sees those curious eyes crinkle at the edges because your laughter is far too strong to only take up part of your expression
he sees himself in this moment too, peeking from underneath a gat at you with childishly shy glances, the smile on his own face growing the longer you two laugh together
his blue wardrobe brushes the grass and your fingertips as the both of you sit in the royal gardens, under a large cherry blossom tree whose petals float down and caress your skin in soft brushes
when he comes back to himself, you’re still sitting there, your expression turning worrisome at his silence
he looks at you, like really looks at you, like he did the queen he fell for all those centuries ago
he realizes then why you had felt so familiar, and he realizes why the divinity had placed you there to take his life, and not anyone else
because no one had the queen’s soul, except you
little did jinyoung know, all those years ago when his life had been taken with the same sword that struck you, your lives had been intertwined by blood, with him living as an immortal and your soul passing from one to the next, always in search of him
it was only fitting that the one he loved be the one who took his misery away once and for all
he doesn’t realize that tears are free falling and he’s sobbing silently until he feels your warm touch on his face, your fingers brushing underneath the skin of his eyes in an attempt to stop them, but to no avail
he cries into your palms like his heart has been ripped open after years of careful stitching had proved useless, his head falling into your shoulder with a heart shattering cry
even when he calls the name of a woman you don’t know, you can’t help feeling like he’s calling you
you just hold him while he cries, his sadness tugging at your heart strings all the more until you feel yourself crying for him
“you’ve seen the sword all along, haven’t you?” he whispers into your neck as you nod slowly
he pushes you back by the shoulders, touch gentle as he squeezes
you see the hilt of the sword in his chest, glowing under a light blue flame, and when you look to jinyoung, he’s already focused on the sword too
“…you have the soul of my first love, the soul of the woman i died for in my first life. i can see it in your eyes. you’ve had many lives but that one is the most relevant.”
you watch as he carefully scoops up your hands, and suddenly you’re crying for different reasons, your hands falling around the hilt as he guides them to hold it, “i’ve made many preparations for this day. the house, the protection, everything will be yours once i go. your aunt won’t be able to get to you, and you’ll be able to live comfortably for the rest of your life, however you want to live it”
he’s smiling through the tears, albeit tentatively, “you can pull out the sword now. i’ll die, be at peace, and you can finally live the life you always wanted, not tied to some jerk goblin you met in bunny slippers”
despite yourself, you laugh through the tears, your hands closing and opening around the hilt with a shaky breath, “must you go? we still have so many things to do as a couple, you know”
he manages a smile, one of his hands coming to your face with a melancholic look in his eyes, “you’ll find someone who doesn’t force you to listen to tales about him meeting Shakespeare as date talk… he won’t be as handsome as me of course, but…”
his attempts to make you laugh are becoming futile though, as your smile starts to fade and you beg whoever might be listening to change their mind, to give you two another chance “are you sure you’re going to die? maybe the divinity meant something else, maybe being at peace had a different meaning-”
but it’s the look in jinyoung’s eyes that convinces you that being selfish and holding him there longer than he should have ever been is not your choice
your heart is beating erratically and you feel like maybe jinyoung can hear it too, he’s so close to you
it only takes the quietest whisper of “it’s okay” from him, the slight raise of his sweaty brows as he prepares himself to say goodbye
you curse every cell of the divinity when jinyoung clasps your hands down on the sword and commands you to pull, and with all your pain and anger and loneliness rising to the surface, you pull it out in one clean sweep, his agonizing yell falling short the moment the sword leaves his body and vanishes into ashes in your palms
you stand, hands suspended in air and eyes shut tight as you wait for it
you imagine his body falling to the floor with a thud, or maybe him falling to ash like his sword had done
tears are still falling from your eyes as you wait with agonizing sadness, unable to look upon the man you had grown to love being nothing more
you wait, and you wait, and you wait
you’re almost certain that he’s just vanished without a trace like the wind, until warm fingers brush your leg and you gasp, looking back
instead of a corpse or black dust you see jinyoung, traces of blue flames brushing his skin before they evaporate altogether
“j-jinyoung-” “i’m at peace” he interrupts, a slightly disbelieving smile on his face
“what do you mean? are you dead? are you a ghost that i’m seeing?” you ask, thinking that maybe the divinity wasn’t done playing cruel games on you two just yet
but then his fingers slide into the spaces between yours, and he still feels warm
“no, i’m at peace. human, alive, mortal. being at peace didn’t mean i would die… it meant that… i’d be at peace with my bride… to live the rest of my mortal days with her.”
his hand locking with yours shocks you into your own reverie, and when your eyes meet his again, you see his tight top knot, his smirk over a teacup, his head bowed with a knowing smile as you pass him by in palace halls
every memory comes back like a tidal wave that knocks you to your knees before his seated form, and his hands fly to your shoulders in concern, just before you smile and kiss him
his favorite smile, where your eyes crinkle so… familiarly
“only took us about a thousand years” you whisper
