it's understandable that the playfair cipher isn't used in gravity falls because it's a fucking stupid cipher and there are variants of it that alter which direction letters are shifted, but! I think if they did use it they could feed the audience the key grid in a few different ways, including but not limited to 1) have it just be the standard abcs, though this still leaves room for error as to which letter is excluded, 2) have a piece of text with letters highlighted/capitalized/otherwise marked that, in order, would correctly fill in the grid, or 3) if you really hate your viewers. you could do something similar to the cipher used in the shorts-

where you're given sets of two numbers (eg 1-12, 9-24, etc), with the first number corresponding to an episode number, and then second number corresponding to the placement of a letter in that episodes end cipher. you could theoretically use this method to give your viewers all the letters in the grid. i think for this you could try presenting your "coordinates" in a 5x5 grid, both to hint at the grids use in the cipher (and thus narrowing down which ciphers it could be), and to prevent confusion about what order the grid is meant to be filled in.

however, i suspect part of the reason this cipher wasn't used, on top of "idk how well known it even is" and "its a frustrating cipher that children would have difficulty with", is that it's a cipher that's REALLY fucking difficult to brute force.

the other ciphers used are Caesar cipher, a1z26 cipher, atbash, combination, a few symbol ciphers, and vigenere. all but the last one is a simple substitution cipher, and is thus easy enough to solve. the vigenere cipher is far more difficult, but even without knowing the key, you can in many cases crack it the way you do most ciphers- analyzing word length, spotting patterns, and making some educated guesses.

this strategy isn't possible (or, at least, it's really fucking inefficient) with playfair, due to its bigram swag. i havent had the opportunity to decipher one of these bad boys myself, especially not without a grid, but it would have to be super fucking difficult. you could, maybe, work off of the frequency of letter pairs, but oh my god i need to go to bed

💎 You could barely tell who he was just by looking at him. All the wrinkles in his face, all the IVs hooked under his arm, not to mention all the lengthy hair in his face. If the Lilycove City nurses didn’t know any better, they would’ve taken him for a hobo. That is, until you heard him speak. Or at the very least try to. The old man was simply too weak to utter anything, save for a few grunts and labored moans. However, during the late night shift, some of the hospital staff have heard some ominous phrases from his room...as if he were chanting.

“Xlnv slnv drgs nv, Xlnv slnv drgs nv, kovzhv xlnv slnv drgs nv...”

Some even had to leave the building due to how uncomfortable it was to listen to the speech. It was so clear, so ungodly, that when he raised his voice...it was almost as if the whole building was plauged in darkness.

The only one who could soothe the screams was his husband. That is, if he was alive. Little did anyone know that he was living between overlapping timelines that tore his feeble mind apart: timelines where N was alive, timelines where N died before him, timelines where N wasn’t his partner or husband at all. Of course, the only timeline where his chanting was quelled was when N was alive. His husband would take him by the hand and hum him a lullaby.

“Kovzhv...xlnv slnv drgs nv...” He mumbled sluggishly.

“Not yet, my love.”

“Dsvm?” He asked before falling asleep.

“When you’re ready,” N whispered as he kissed him goodnight, wondering if this’ll be his last night...

Saburo wasn’t sure when it started, but he remembered all of the puzzles he found in his locker.

“Eh?” Saburo’s classmate sat next to him. “What’s that you’re fidgeting with?”

Saubro cocked his head. “I’m not sure?” He was holding some sort of Rubik’s cube with a letter written on the center square of each side and a heart. Of course he solved it already, but the letters made no sense.

I mean, they formed a word, but Saburo couldn’t figure out why the letters R-H-U-S-C formed the word CRUSH (and there was a heart).

“I think you might have a secret admirer.” His classmate snatched the cube out of Saburo’s hands and studied it. Saburo felt the irrational desire to take it back.

“Who would admire me?” Saburo mumbled and took it back.

The classmate shrugged. “Not sure.” She smiled at him. “Maybe someone who finds you incredibly smart.”

“That narrows it down.” Saburo said sarcastically.

“And cute maybe.” She looked away, blushing slightly, but Saburo failed to notice this because he was still studying the cube.

“I’ll figure this out.” Saburo said, twisting the cube again. “She didn’t even leave a note.”

“Maybe she wants it to be a mystery?”

“I guess? But I want to find out who she is.” He looked up at his classmate then cleared his throat and then looked away.

“Hopefully.” She replied.

“This code really makes no sense whatsoever.” Saburo scratched his head. “I’ve really tried everything.”

“Letter to alphabet?” She took her seat beside his again for homeroom. Apparently, Saburo had found another puzzle in his locker.

“Yep.”

“Atbash?”

“Yep.”

“Binary?”

“There’s not enough zeroes and ones.”

“Hmm….” She sighed, a kind of resigned sigh really and she opened her book. Her eyes widened. “Shit.”

Saburo looked up at her. “What?”

She slammed her head into the book. “How long did it take you to do the homework on Caesar?”

“Caesar?” Saburo thought to last week when he finished it. “Um… three hours?”

“Perfect. I can do it in one.” She sighed and leaned back in her chair.

“Caesar…” He bit his lip and stared at the paper (which was burned and smelled like coffee, he figured his admirer was artistic as well as smart and extra), he tried something and it clicked into place. He grabbed the hand of his classmate and smiled at her. “You’re a genius!”

“Eh?”

“Caesar’s cipher!”

“Three letters back?”

“Yeah!” Saburo slapped his forehead. “It’s so simple why didn’t I think of it?”

She squeezed his hand. “Sometimes the hardest things to see are right in front of you.”

He smiled at her and looked at their hands that we’re still touching. He blushed slightly and let go. “Thank you.”

“Anytime.”

He set to work on the code, and in no time he deciphered it. It was a short poem, a haiku if you will.

You make me happy

When you smile brightly at me

Next time you’ll know me

“Next time you’ll know me?” Saburo cocked his head. “Oh my. She’ll tell me soon?”

“I guess?”

Saburo looked absolutely excited. “I hope it’s not too easy though. This is actually kind of fun.”

“I’m glad you like it.” She mumbled under her breath, softly enough so Saburo won’t hear. “Anyway.” She said louder. “Hope you find out who that is soon.”

“Me too!”

What Saburo said about it not being easy, well it definitely wasn’t.

Instead of having just one puzzle in his locker, he had a map of the school (which each location was written in morse or binary code) and he had to go to the places in a specific order (thankfully it was just a dotted line and arrows.

There was a note that told him to do it after class only, so that no one would really interrupt him.

Saburo couldn’t sit still the whole day and barely paid attention in class as he was trying to glean any hints from the map. (Of course he got none of the sort.)

“You’re not paying attention.” The girl beside him whisper-teased.

“This is… quite exciting.” He showed her the map.

“Is that binary?”

“Yeah.” He translated the locations just for the sake of it. “And morse too. It’s kind of cool how she mixed them up.”

She smiled. “Really?”

“Keeps me thinking.” He tapped his pencil to his lips.

“Mr. Yamada.” The teacher called and Saburo flinched. “If you would be so kind to answer the question on the board.”

“Busted.” She teased, which got her a small slap on the arm as retribution.

Later that day, Saburo stood in front of his locker, where the map said where he should start.

The first stop was the library, where he found a riddle (written in navy flag code) which told him to go find a book in the history section.

The Dewey Decimal code was written in binary on the paper.

He flipped through said book (which he found in the children’s section of the history section) and found a clue for the puzzle in the next location.

He brought the clue to the gym and he found five basketballs in a row. He would have to pick the right one or else he wouldn’t be able to pass. (Well logically, of course the gym doors wouldn’t be locked because that would put both him and his admirer in a stint, but it gave him thrill to imagine if it didn’t open.)

Kind of like his favourite Harry Potter moment, you know, the one with Hermione and the potions. Harry could have died if she picked the wrong one, but she really got through the riddle and solved it. He was a huge Harry Potter nerd, and he had to appreciate his admirer to making something of the sort.

He picked the third basketball from the right and it was attached to a super thin string, If he had noticed it before, it would’ve been a lot easier.

“Yes!” He shouted and his voice echoed in the empty gym. He blushed, even if no one was watching. He was behaving like a child who just got candy as a prize.

He pulled on the basketball and pulled the rope. It extended to the bleachers and at the end of it, another paper was apparently attached.

Saburo was actually enjoying this and was excited when he picked it up.

The code was written in morse again, plus the Caesar cipher. The riddle said that it was the last puzzle he had to solve.

The next location was… Saburo stopped right outside the door. His classroom? He stepped inside and found a note on the teacher’s table. It was just a sequence of numbers and arrows.

3 up, 2 left, 4 right, 7 up, 9 down, 1 left

And another note written at the bottom, Saburo sat down on the teacher’s table and translated it from Morse to numbers to letters.

Start from the back. Face the board. Opposites attract.

Saburo picked up the paper with the numbers and the arrows and moved to the back of the classroom.

“They’re steps.” He mumbled and started. It didn’t make sense though, because his classroom didn’t really fit that many- oh. Opposites. Saburo restarted and this time it made sense.

He found himself in front of the seat beside his. “What?”

There was a post-it taped to the table.

He picked it up, and written in his seat mate’s handwriting were two words.

“Found me.”

Saburo whirled around to find his classmate at the door. She entered so quietly he didn’t notice.

“Hi.” She said timidly. Her face was sporting a blush and she chewed on her lip nervously as she swayed on the spot. “Um…”

Saburo pocketed the note and slowly walked to her. “You?”

“Me.”

He put his hands in his pockets nervously. “I… uh… you’re…” He scratched the back of his head. “Fun?”

She blushed. “Sorry. I’m not good with words. This was how I talk to you. We bond over puzzles and math and…” She turned redder. “I guess I started liking you because we had a lot in common…. And that you’re really smart and cuteandfunnyandreallyishouldstoptalkingohmygodimnotshuttingup-“

Saburo’s hands were shaking but he grabbed her hand with one of his. “No it’s okay.” He smiled a little. “Eh… uhmmm….” He stayed quiet for what seemed like forever. “I like you too.”

Her head snapped up. “Really?”

He nodded. “I really like the riddles. They were really fun and smart…” He looked away from her, he hoped his hands weren’t shaking that bad. “Um… c-can I….” He swallowed. “Can I…. ki-“ He inhaled sharply. “Take you out?” He mentally smacked himself.

“Now?” She blushed and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I… um sure.”

Saburo smiled nervously and opened the classroom door.

This one is a brief mention, but... when someone asks what Bill is up to:

A COUPLE THINGS.

FORD STILL HASN’T FIGURED EVERYTHING OUT ALL THE FUNCTIONS TO THIS, BUT LET’S JUST SAY I TOOK A PAGE OUT OF SOMEONE’S BOOK.

The italics on “a page” is the hint that Bill made a page on the blog. There’s the mun page (which I made) then the MUSE page which is Bill’s.

This page has actually been up for a long time, prior to the post. Bill previously created the page, and updated it a couple times. However, the only way someone could have found it beforehand is if they had seen the /mun page and knowing the mun/muse mirror terminology from rp blogs (where mun is who is writing, while muse is the character being written) had then tried checking the /muse page.

During this event though, Bill did a couple things.

Made the link to the Muse page available on the sidebar

Changed the icon to a close up picture of his eye

Changed the color scheme to yellow

Was a 3-sided jerk that left taunts behind for Ford.

When Ford returned to the blog, he changed the icon and color scheme back. However, he cannot access the pages and does not know about them.

vigenere key is (Bill) and the code comes out to

typical 3 back caesar for the code (It’s all in your head) for a vigenere key of the original message for:

In the tags there’s one that when you do a 3 back is (fiddleford) which is the vigenere key for the coded message.

He was my friend… my only one, I realize now. He did wipe memories from my mind without my own consent. However, comparatively speaking that's far from the worst thing that has been done to my mind now. Either way, it will be infinitely easier to think about if I get through all of this.

Theory for that weird ass octo countdown blog

On days that are a multiple of 10 they post something really weird/in code and on days that end in 9 they post a hint to decipher said code. Day 80 was written in Atbash cipher and day 79 was asking if people knew someone named Atbash.

Hi peep! Sorry for the late reply. But I have two layers of ciphers on this thing. Try decoding it with bill’s cipher and then try either ceaser or atbash (I’m actually not sure if I used both- it’s been a while), but if you can’t figure it out, I can tell you what it says.

Well... it all began with that she once had asked me if I want to talk about stuff with her. I had answered positively tho I had never chatted with anyone in last 3 years at that moment. We fastly became friends and she was the first person I ever trusted on the internet since 3 years.I honestly really loved her personality. She always was so kind,understanding and sweet with me.She cheered me up when I felt bad and helped me with my personal problems. In the July I started to feel strong feeling towards her but I was really afraid to tell her that because I thought that she won’t return the feelings back + I had asked one my family member(I won’t say who tho,I don’t want you to say words about them) what if I fell in love with my friend who happens to be a girl and they said that every non-straight people are sick,cringy motherfuckers and they do not worth to be with someone they love and it made me more afraid to tell ANYONE about my feeling towards her. Sometimes I tried to hint her that I like her (like once when I had used atbash cipher to hide my name behind it when she asked who we ship her with,f.e.) but it didn’t help. In the August I felt like she starts to understand that I have a crush on her so I asked people on Twitter for help cuz I was afraid to lost my best friend. But then I decided to finally say her that I love her...

And it happened that she loves me too. And then we started datin’. It honestly was the best thing that happened to me in the last few years.

hi!! sorry to bother, but i'm new to the gf fandom (got into it after the show ended) and im so lost on how to learn the ciphers. do you know of any guides or helpful posts i can use to figure them out? i want to be able to have the thrill of deciphering the journal 3 codes on my own like everyone else got to do with the show. love your blog!!

No bother at all! There’s plenty of codebreaking resources for Gravity Falls, from ones that will basically do everything for you to ones that’ll just give you little hints.

Journal 3 has a few different ciphers, but nearly all of them fall into one of three categories:

Caesar Ciphers: Also known as “shift ciphers” because the letters of the alphabet are “shifted.” The clue for the Caesar cipher used in most Gravity Falls related stuff is “three letters back.”

Symbol Substitution Ciphers: There’s three of these in Journal 3, where each letter of the alphabet is replaced with a weird symbol. There are guides to solving these ciphers hidden throughout various pieces of Gravity Falls content. A guide to cracking Ford’s first cipher can be found on a page of the journal that is seen in the TV show. A guide to cracking his second cipher can be found in Journal 3 itself. A guide to cracking Bill’s cipher can be found in Dipper and Mabel’s Guide To Mystery And Nonstop Fun.

If you want to brute force your way through them without using the guides, the wikipedia article on Frequency Analysis is a good place to start. Also look out for words that are one letter long--these are almost always “I” or “A.”

Vigenere Ciphers: These are made and decoded using a vigenere square. A keyword is used to encode and decode them. Vigenere ciphers are notoriously difficult to figure out without the key, because the letter substitution keeps changing. In the television show, the key was always hidden in the background somewhere. There is one Vigenere cipher in the standard journal and two more in the blacklight edition. In all three cases, the key is found on the same page as the cipher and should be fairly easy to guess.

The Mystery Of Gravity Falls as a very handy decoder/encoder. It allows you to type plaintext or ciphertext in and run it through the “three letters back” cipher, atbash, binary, vigenere ciphers, polybus squares, a number substitution cipher, basically all the codes that Gravity Falls has used that don’t involve symbols.

And if you get frustrated, the Gravity Falls wiki has a list of all the cryptograms and almost all the hidden messages.
