The Remorseful Lover
Valentine's Day, as we know it today, has a long and complex history that encompasses both ancient traditions and Christian martyr legends. The origins of this day can be traced back to ancient Rome and have evolved over the centuries.
Ancient Origins One theory about the origins of Valentine's Day refers to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, celebrated from February 13th to 15th. During this festival, various rituals were performed that were supposed to promote cleansing and fertility. Priests of Luperci, an order of Roman priests, conducted rituals where they ran through the city and struck citizens with leather thongs, which was considered a fertility rite. Although Lupercalia has clear pagan origins, the direct connection to modern Valentine's Day is disputed.
Christian Martyrs Valentine's Day on February 14th is often associated with one or more Christian martyrs named Valentinus. There are various legends about Saint Valentines linked to the day. One of the most famous stories tells of a priest named Valentine who secretly married Christian couples to spare men from conscription at a time when Christianity was prohibited in the Roman Empire. Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned, and executed.
Evolution to a Festival of Love The romantic connotation of Valentine's Day seems to be a development of the Middle Ages. In the 14th and 15th centuries, poets in Europe, like Geoffrey Chaucer, began to associate the day with romantic love. This tradition continued and led to Valentine's Day increasingly being linked with the exchange of love letters and gifts between partners.
Today, Valentine's Day is marked by commercial traditions, including the exchange of gifts like cards, flowers, and sweets. Yet, beyond its commercial aspects, Valentine's Day also carries deeper meanings of love and forgiveness, as expressed in the motif of a remorseful, returning lover. This image, symbolizing the desire for forgiveness and the hope for renewal in relationships, seamlessly integrates into the broader palette of Valentine's Day traditions. It emphasizes that true love is expressed not only through gifts but also through understanding, healing, and the willingness to reconcile.
The development of Valentine's Day from an ancient fertility festival through Christian martyr legends to a day dedicated to romantic love shows how traditions can change and adapt over time.

📖 ‘Wuthering Heights’ written by Emily Bronte under the pseudonym of Ellis Bell was written between October 1845 and June 1846, it was published in 1847. Her only novel, the story was considered controversial during its inception due to the lurid depictions of cruelty, religious hypocrisy, gender inequality, and social class, between the two chief characters of Cathy and Heathcliff, and the destructive effects of jealousy and vengefulness between them. The story highlighted the underbelly of a Victorian society which shielded itself behind strict ideals of perceived morality, while the industrial revolution created a hidden veil to mask the disease, death and deprivation which ran unchecked throughout the Victorian period. Dying a year after the book’s publication, at the age of 30, believing that the work had been a failure, her health deteriorated rapidly, due to her ongoing tuberculosis, (named consumption at the time), the harsh winter, and the contamination of water in her house through run off from the church's graveyard; which not only sickened her but also her brothers and sisters. Three of the characters in the story, Francis, Edgar, and Linton die from consumption, and the story describes their symptoms with acute medical detail, drawn from her own worsening health. Tuberculosis would also end the lives of her sister Anne, and her Brother Branwell, by 1849. Historical love sometimes provides us with stories to shift our modern pessimism and declare a stance that love, on occasion, became the driving force of history; even in an idealized form. For example politics and control in the Bronze age world, undoubtedly was a consideration for the Trojan war, but also of equal importance to its chronicler Homer, was the love story between Helen and Paris, again in Celtic mythology is the similar story of Tristan and Iseult. Therefore in these instances we have the combination of history and mythology all driven by the acclamation of love. However in contrast, history also prevents us with the opposite, where love and marital relations clash with the law. It is these on this Valentines Day, that shall be the focus of this post. Namely ‘The Rule of Thumb’, and ‘Marital Pit fighting’. In citing the skepticism of historical love, the term ‘Rule of Thumb’ applies, meaning a ‘broadly accurate guide or principle, based on experience or practice rather than theory’, the folklore of the term holds that it meaning derived from an ancient law whereby a husband could beat his wife, as long as the implement used was no thicker than his thumb. However no such law ever existed, despite it being cited during the 18th and 19th century. The term is first mentioned in 1692, and could originate with the method used by brewers to test the temperature of beer while it was being processed, by dipping their thumb into the batch to test it.
